LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Women’s Issue Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. Regardless of age and background, these leaders embody boldness, creativity, generosity – all while being compassionate and kind. Working with all of them on this issue was inspiring to our whole team! In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life. This month is also Mother’s Day, and a special one for me as it’s my first Mother’s Day after giving birth to my baby girl. But having celebrated Mother’s Day in years prior, I know the day is not just about being a biological mother –there are mothers who have adopted children, grandmothers, stepmothers, aunties, dog moms, and more. We hope this month you take time celebrate the women in your life!

THESE LEADERS INSPIRE A SENSE OF SHARED RESPONSIBILITY TO MEET NEEDS WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY. ARTICLE BY HEIJA NUNN AND BREE O'BRIEN | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE INTERVIEWEES

Camp Kindness Counts provides children, youth, parents and caregivers with resources to help them thrive and service experiences that help better the health and happiness of both individuals and the community. What do you find most challenging and/or rewarding about the work you do? The most challenging part of my work is convincing people about the power of kindness. Kindness involves the curiosity to wonder what you can do to make a difference, the empathy to understand a different perspective or feeling, the compassion towards ourselves in challenging times, and so much more. Witnessing a child feel a sense of purpose and joy from a kind action they performed is the most rewarding feeling in the world. How do you connect the Bellevue community to your mission? We have provided enrichment to Bellevue School District students, and camps for all community members, for more than 8 years. Our programs and resources include character development and service learning components; Family Service Projects, free parenting workshops on character development and free virtual workshops sharing ways to support the community as a Kindness Ambassador. As a parenting partner of UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, we have developed the Kind World Explorers character development curriculum. What are you most excited about right now? Honestly, right now, I am most excited about creating sustainable ways to nurture and spread kindness! We are involving and teaching interested role models and gifting community members with free guides and resources to help them get started.

Chezik Tsunoda

Founder and Film Director, No More Under

No More Under (NMU), a non-profit organization focused on water safety and drowning prevention. The documentary film Chezik produced and directed, Drowning in Silence, is about her journey of grief, channeled into purpose, after her son drowned. She traveled the country interviewing thought leaders, doctors, and families who have faced a similar tragedy as well as sharing an intimate look into her journey of healing. What do you find most challenging and/or rewarding about the work you do? The most challenging part of my work is that it’s based in grief. I talk about swimming and drowning daily. Somehow, that is also the most rewarding part of this work as it’s based on my son Yori’s story and his legacy. How do you connect the Bellevue community to your mission? We were able to work with the City of Bellevue last year to organize temporary life jacket

loaner stations at our beaches. This initiative was so successful that we are partnering with them again this year, as well as local architecture nonprofit, The Loft Project, to make loaner stations permanent. We also partner with pediatricians to disperse water safety information and have a teen ambassador program. What are you most excited about right now? I’m most excited about Drowning in Silence and NMU’s Learn to Swim program. The film is on the festival circuit right now and it’s been an incredible experience. No More Under is partnering with Waterbabies, the YMCA, and Bellwether Housing for our Learn to Swim program, which provides children with free swimming lessons and resources, such as swimsuits. Dr. Catherine Cushinberry CEO of HopeLink

A Memphis native, Dr. Cushinberry has called the Pacific Northwest home since she was named CEO of HopeLink in the spring of 2021. She has 25 years of experience in the non-profit sector. How did you first become involved in non-profit management? While I was in college, an acquaintance working in my home church wanted to start a summer camp program for inner city youth and tapped me to manage it. What inspires you to do this kind of work? Growing up, my family and I benefitted from non-profit programs like HopeLink until my mother became the first in our family to graduate from college. I strive to be a competitive leader, leading from a place of passion. How does HopeLink serve its clients? We work with hundreds of organizations across the North End and the Eastside on issues like providing food and transportation options to those in need, stabilizing families and helping them exit poverty, energy and rental assistance, and education. Across all of our programming, what matters most is serving our clients with dignity and seeing their humanity. What changed for HopeLink over the course of the pandemic? Need increased, particularly with regard to food insecurity, and assistance with energy and rent. Pre-boxed food was put together at our facility in Kirkland and shipped out to other locations to meet the need. We saw government support increase as well as support from the community, which was heartening.

“Across all of our programming, what matters most is serving our clients with dignity and seeing their humanity.”

Senior Site Director, Mary’s Place Family Center shelter in Bellevue.

Supporting families in shelter to find the stability and resources they need to move back into permanent housing. What do you find most challenging and/or rewarding about the work you do? Our greatest challenge is knowing that our brand-new family center is already full, and that there are still families and children outside in cars and tents. When we see a family achieve their dream of home, we all celebrate and do a happy dance! It’s incredibly rewarding and why we do this work. How do you connect the community to your mission? We invite our neighbors in to meet our families! Come in and help serve a meal, clean & organize, support a family’s housing search, or just say hello – you can change a life with your gift of time! What are you most excited about right now? Collaborating with partner organizations on the Eastside to provide shelter and services for families here.

“Slow down a little. Take time to reflect and plan. Take risks that may lead to mistakes, and then learn from those

Dear Younger Self: First of all, this is a thank you letter: thank you for being you, the person who has become me! Along the way I’ve learned many things that I wish I knew when I was your age — too many to count. So the first thing I want to tell you is: slow down a little. Take time to reflect and plan. Take risks that may lead to mistakes, and then learn from those mistakes. One mistake I always used to make was comparing myself with people: beautiful women in magazines, people who seemed successful and perfect… It took me a long time to learn that those people are more than the image that they show you. They struggle, too. You don’t need to be like the person you think they are — you need to be you. And when you’re you, the truest you, then you are able to tell your story. There’s an authentic story in your heart, and even though only you can tell it, it will resonate with other hearts, and help them grow. That’s what people want: underneath all of the beauty and money and social status, people want their hearts to resonate with others, and to grow. That’s why your story is the key to your success. Love, Lee

Lee Rhodes is the founder of Glassybaby, the colorful hand-blown glass cups that often are purchased not only for decoration, but to commemorate life events: births, deaths, struggles, separations and triumphs. Pearl Leung

Pearl Leung’s position as Amazon’s Head of Community Affairs for Bellevue, feels like a full circle moment to her at times. She moved to Seattle to pursue a degree in Architecture at the University of Washington, but felt so intimidated by her first Professor that she never took another class toward that degree. Instead, she chased her growing interest in American Ethnic Studies, her curiosity about the connection between nonprofits and business, and her passion for equity. Along the way she interned for Governor Locke and managed a City Council campaign for Velma Veloria. Recognizing how real estate and equity through land use are central to the American Dream, and pivotal towards empowering and building community foundations and infrastructure, she returned to the UW for a Masters in Urban Planning and Real Estate Development—a different, but no less impactful, kind of architecture. At 24, Pearl became one of the youngest employees at Vulcan Real Estate and recalls a critical learning moment in the early days of growth and redevelopment in South Lake Union, “The Cascade Neighborhood Council had a socio-economically diverse membership from condo residents to people recovering from homelessness. There were members with different viewpoints including those who were not supportive of the redevelopment in the neighborhood. It was early in my career, and I remember being nervous about attending this meeting since I represented a developer. Not only was I welcomed by members of the council, but I learned so much from participating in these meetings; how to be inclusive, how they saw me as an individual versus the organization I represented, and how to have healthy, respectful civic disagreements and dialogue towards a common goal. That really shaped how I show up today and how I work in the community.”

Leung applies lessons learned from early Amazon growth in Seattle to Bellevue such as early engagement and advocacy. “In Bellevue, we can look around corners, help and add, join conversations with Bellevue leaders. If we know the growth is coming, we ask how we can collaborate with the city, neighbors and stakeholders to keep Bellevue beautiful and livable. We can anticipate pain points such as affordable housing and transportation needs.” For Pearl, thinking holistically about how Amazon can be a proactive, good neighbor starts with listening. She enrolled in the City of Bellevue Essentials Program, a 10-week introduction to civic engagement highlighting the structure and daily operations of Bellevue city government. A day in the life of this Head of Community Affairs can include conversations with arts and culture groups to find ways to support equity efforts such as cultural mapping with Easthub, to distributing lattes and snacks to show appreciation for neighbors during construction on new Amazon buildings. And don’t be surprised if she is in line ahead of you at her fave haunt Fogrose Atelier. Leung recognizes the challenge of change—and Bellevue is changing. She also knows the power of connecting people and organizations. It’s often so much more than just a donation, we like to leverage other unique assets at Amazon and roll up our sleeves to bring in volunteers, make connections, be a thought partner, leverage our technology and logistics expertise. “That level of collaboration and creativity is what gets me excited. I love the Eastside!” she says. “My favorite part of my job is that I get to dream with organizations. We are dreaming together and then actually doing it!”

Emma “Emy” Morris knew she wanted to be a nurse since she was five years old. During World War II, she completed nurse’s training at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Montana. In 1962, Emy began working for Overlake Hospital, where she enjoyed a 46-year career. As the most tenured nurse at Overlake, Emy recorded over one million hours serving patients. She has enjoyed every aspect of nursing, including bedside, but her favorite has been working as an operating room nurse and has done nearly every kind of surgery. When Emy started as an operating room nurse, Overlake was still the little wooden hospital sitting between a pig and dairy farm. Staff could look out the window in the surgery area and see cows grazing. Throughout her tenure, Emy has seen five expansions that have transformed the hospital into a 337-bed facility. Spirituality has always been at the center of her life. Now in her retirement, Emy enjoys being involved with The Bellettini’s weekly church services organized and led by residents.

Dr. Rooz Khosravi and patient

the smile journey is a self- care journey

Life is busy for moms, but not too busy for you. Orthodontic care is more than just a cosmetic treatment for straighter teeth; it’s a commitment to your overall health and a commitment to you. The confidence that comes from an improved smile is also part of a self-care journey. Most of us live very full lives as we strive to balance work and family responsibilities with our own personal needs. At PORTH, we’ve optimized every facet of the orthodontic treatment process to compliment your busy life, not take from it.

Finding time to make orthodontic appointments work in anyone's schedule can be difficult… And it’s clear that moms especially feel that pinch, so PORTH’s appointment times are optimized accordingly. Patients can schedule in the afternoons, evenings, and Saturdays when it makes sense in their lives. We also offer remote appointment options so that patients can reduce their trips to the clinic.

A quick Google search will reveal dozens of orthodontists near you that offer cosmetic options, but when it comes down to it, most orthodontic providers offer limited adult treatment options. And often, adults rarely prioritize their orthodontic needs. If that’s you, maybe it’s time to give your smile the care it deserves. PORTH Orthodontics offers more than the standard menu that places an emphasis on patient experience.

Cosmetic orthodontics are everything right now. There is an abundance of new technology impacting the orthodontic world to deliver precision treatment planning and outcomes - like did you know we don’t take plaster mold impressions anymore!? But what’s most important for you are the aesthetic options out there. Clear aligners are a great option for some patients, but ultimately more trouble than they’re worth for others. At PORTH, our absolute favorite cosmetic option is lingual braces. They are truly invisible because they are small brackets placed behind your teeth. Only a limited number of orthodontists offer this option, given the specific set of technical skills the provider and team have to master. They’re truly the best of both worlds - invisible treatment that’s hands-off for the patient. At PORTH, it’s all about our patients from top to bottom, start to finish. Dr. Rooz Khosravi established PORTH Personalized Orthodontics in 2017 to offer a personalized approach to orthodontic treatment. He offers individually tailored solutions aimed at creating precision outcomes to deliver beautiful, confident smiles to each of his patients.
