Editor’s Letter
Happy New Year, BuckHaven.
I
am writing this note from the back seat of the car, as my family travels home to Atlanta from Michigan after a holiday visit with with uncles and grandma. When I tell old friends up north that I live in Atlanta, most sigh jealously, thinking I eat barbecue and grits every day, walk around in shorts year around and rub shoulders with hip hop stars and famous housewives. It’s when I set them straight that they really grow more envious. I DO get to eat inventive and farm-fresh food from talented chefs in gorgeous restaurants all over Buckhaven. I rub shoulders with some of Atlanta’s most generous, brave and inspiring people like Jeff Wigbels (see page 16) and energetic and engaging ladies like Kim Schaper (see page 28). I get the inside scoop on rising recording artists like the young talent we feature in our Music Right Here story on page 22. Atlanta has so much to call its own and we are thrilled to bring you just a taste in this month’s pages. Enjoy and make 2015 your own!

ur publisher, Jim Newman, lost his dear dad in October. Everyone at Lifestyle Publications knows how much Papa Jack meant to Jim and his kids, Lauren and Daniel. Jack A. Newman, age 95, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2014, surrounded by his family. Together with Marjorie “Jean” Newman, his wife of 67 years, Jack was the father of 8 children, and was blessed with 30 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren. Jack was known for his great dedication to God, expressed through loving devotion to his wife, his family and the Catholic Church. He was an inspiring leader; he was faithful in prayer; and he brought his own unique brand of humor to every family gathering. He was not only an exceptional family man, he was also an Army veteran, athlete, and had a distinguished 50-year career in financial services. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and excelled in sports that included tennis, boxing and golf. As a young man, he won a city-wide tennis tournament, and in retirement, he was proud of a “hole in one” at Brookridge Country Club. He served in sales management with the investment management division of American Express, rising to the position of Regional Manager.

VAN MICHAEL GIVES Van Michael Salon’s seven Atlanta-based locations are proud to announce the results of their October partnership with local breast cancer support organization, the Pink Heals Foundation, for the fourth year. In addition to their monetary donation, Van Michael’s newly opened Midtown salon provided hair and make up for the models at the hugely successful W ThinksPINK ‘Cure on the Catwalk’ event, again benefiting Pink Heals. The following month, Van Michael’s newest location in Alpharetta’s Avalon shopping destination launched its own philanthropic partnership with The Drake House, an organization that provides support to local homeless mothers and their children, with a commitment
to donate a portion of the proceeds from its first month of sales in November, which totaled $10,000. Van Michael Salon’s Midtown salon, located at the Shops at the Metropolis, and Alpharetta’s salon at Avalon are now open.

HEART FELT Having kicked off its Trauma Kit Program to help protect front-line Atlanta Police, the Buckhead Coalition has now released the initial list of contributors. Initial commitments have been made by Buckhead Hotel Council, Central Atlanta Progress, the Coalition, Louis Cohen Law Office, Joseph W. Evans, Attorney Joe Fried, Councilman C.T. Martin, and Midtown Alliance, for donations totaling more than $18,000. The Kits (which sell for $50 each) are available for purchase by citizens and organizations, in any quantity. The Coalition initiated the idea of such life-saving equipment for police officers (and others hurt as well, to stop loss of blood). Research has determined this to be the cause of death in two out of three police wounded by gunfire. Those wanting to donate one or more Kits can do so by making (tax deductible) Sam Massell with Trauma Plate Packs
payment to Atlanta Police Foundation (for Trauma Kit Program account) and mailing it to State Bank & Trust Co., at Suite 1900 of Buckhead Tower at Lenox, 3399 Peachtree, 30326.
IN MEMORIAM HEATHER GREEN LEVINE Lifestyle Publications lost a friend and collaborator when Heather Green Levine passed away in November. Heather was the creator and owner of Beauty Bar of Buckhead, celebrating the one year anniversary of the business before she passed from an extended illness. Born in Waco, Texas, she launched a real estate business and served the community there on a handful of boards and was a strong advocate for supporting victims of domestic and sex abuse, veterans, mental health, cancer, diabetes and LGBT rights. Having a knack for creativity, Heather left the world of real estate in pursuit of her greater love, the beauty industry. Heather honed her craft for beauty while working with top brands in the industry selling cosmetics, and launching her own line. Heather is the creator of the concept, Stop Light Makeup, conceived for a woman on the go. As a gifted make-up artist, Heather also worked as a salon manager for one of the top five salons in the United States. At Beauty Bar of Buckhead, she created the Blow and Glow World for women like herself and men who enjoy pampering. Inspired by the trendsetting styles of timeless brands like Chanel and Dior, Heather stopped at nothing in her custom design and Italian custom architecture creating her own house of beauty. She is survived by her husband Abe Levine of Sandy Springs, her parents and step-children.

Buckhead Resident ‘Takes Aim at Cancer’ By Supporting Targeted Treatment Efforts Article Andrea Janise | Photography Addison Hill
I
n 2006, Morgan Stanley Sr. Vice President and Financial Advisor Jeff Wigbels was a talented marathon runner fitting the picture of perfect health. He was living in Buckhead, married to his beautiful wife Tiffany, and they had a sweet daughter, Ava, with a second baby on the way. Life was great. That was, until later that year, when Jeff did not do so well running in his latest race. He performed slower than usual and could not understand why. He immediately went to his doctor to see if he could find out what was going on. In October, a full body scan was completed and it was determined that he had pneumonia which resulted in a referral from his doctor to a pulmonary oncologist. His appointment was scheduled on October 10th, the day before his son, Jack, was going to be born. 16
BuckHavenLifestyle.com | January 2015
Not thinking too much of it, Jeff went to the follow-up visit where he received some very devastating news: It wasn’t pneumonia. It was stage IV lung cancer found at a very late stage. The x-rays showed a 7.9 cm area of cancer that had spread from his lung to his neck, abdomen and attached to his heart. Jeff had no use of one of his lungs and had difficulty breathing, but this news absolutely took his breath away. “All I could think about was my son was being born the next day and how do I tell my wife.” Jeff recalls. “The local oncologist told me to come back in on Monday for chemo and Tuesday for radiation—the usual ‘Standard of Care.’ It was about a 5-minute conversation.” Realizing that this doctor had no specific lung experience, Jeff decided to take the ad-
vice of a friend and meet with a lung cancer specialist at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center for a second opinion. “I met with the head of radiation, and he spent two-and-a-half hours explaining to me what cancer is and what it is not,” Jeff says. He then dialed Dr. Roy S. Herbst, the head of lung cancer in the division, which had 97 lung cancer specialists. “I made my selection. It was him. I wanted to be as close as I could be to research.” Jeff worked with the team at MD Anderson looking at his specific cancer using targeted therapy based on the latest research and clinical trials. “The goal was to hold back cancer,” Jeff explains. Targeted treatment aims to get rid of the cancer by using pharmaceutical treatments designed to attack only the cancer cells and eliminate them, as opposed to a one-size-fits-all chemotherapy and radiation combination. “All of the clinical drugs have been phenomenal; I’ve tried things before people knew that they existed. The beauty is that all three drugs that I tested have been FDA approved. I am now completely cancer free,” Jeff exclaims. After the diagnosis, Jeff has made it his mission to spread the word about targeted treatment for patients instead of the usual Standard of Care. Targeted treatment helps pinpoint the cancer area and work specifically on the needs of each patient. To further solidify his cause, he founded the website TakeAimAtCancer.org to raise funding for cancer research and help advise patients in making the best decisions about their care. “Understand that you have to do the research, and you have to trust someone,” says Jeff. While we hope that no one hears the three dreaded words, “you have cancer,” if you do find yourself or someone you know facing this obstacle, Jeff provides this advice: • Stop and don’t panic • Call a friend • Get as close to the cancer research centers as possible

Locally Owned loved ones in my home. Diving in to my resolution head-on, I questioned Siraj about current trends in framing and what is on ALL our minds: What makes for a custom framing job that we’ll love for years to come? Q: What are current trends in framing? A: Currently distressed finished and hardwood frames are in and our customers love that ‘beachy’ look. In the last year, our moulding vendors have come in with lacquer finished frames which are simply gorgeous. Something that is not in vogue in the USA yet, but is big in Europe and many other countries is metal frames. We carry a lovely line! Somehow we Americans think of metal frames as cheap which is incorrect. Q: What are the most common items you frame? A: We often frame family and vacation pictures along with sports jerseys/ memorabilia and concert posters. Atlanta also loves to frame their children’s artwork.
New Year’s Resolution:
Frame Those Photos!
Q: Why is framing a wonderful idea for gift giving, including birthday and wedding gifts? A: Framing makes the ideal gift because when you frame a picture or a memento, it preserves a memory. We frame wedding dresses and on a couple of occasions we have framed all together a picture of the bride and groom, the wedding invite, the Champagne bottle and engraved champagne glasses. We have customers who like to frame the wedding invite, which becomes a lovely gift for the newlyweds. At Christmas time, framed family photos make great gifts. We carry a line of ROMA picture frames made in Canada with Italian woods, and they make amazing gifts. We carry something that very few framers have, gold and silver leafed ‘Closed Corner’ frames. These are out of this world, 22 carat gold leafed and real silver hand leafed frames. These frames take your breath away.

riving through Chastain Park, it’s easy to see the impeccable taste of Buckhead’s residents. Gorgeous homes greet the New Year with freshly manicured lawns while framed boxwood topiaries adorn front doors. Peek inside these homes, and you’ll see beautifully framed artwork and family photographs, courtesy of Tuxedo Frame Gallery. Tuxedo Frame Gallery, a locally-owned framing business in Buckhead, has serviced the needs of a loyal fan base for over 24 years by providing impeccable workmanship and unique designs. Siraj, the owner since 1990, emphasizes excellent customer service. Customers seem to agree. “Several of our customers bring in their art and leave it at our discretion, totally relying on us to frame it. This trust in our services is a testament to our business,” notes Siraj. One of my New Year’s resolutions is to actually print some of the many photos stored on my laptop and update the pictures of 18

Q: As an artist and a specialist in the field, is there any unusual or significant framing job you can share with us? A: We do unusual projects all the time. One I remember as being really unique was this huge American flag, about 10 feet tall. Sports fans will remember SKIP CARAY, the famous sports commentator. When he passed away in 2008, this US platoon in the Middle East presented Skip’s wife with a flag that flew at their base. That flag was about 6 feet wide and 10 feet long, accompanied by a letter and certificate to honor his memory. His daughter, who is a wonderful designer, brought it to us to frame. That was a challenge because of the size. Getting it smoothly sewed on to the mat was tricky. Once complete the frame was so huge it would not fit through our shop door. That was a beautiful frame, and gift, no doubt. TuxedoFrameGallery.com 3800 Roswell Rd

When Soulful Dining Article Sue G. Collins | Photography Provided

wo years ago Maureen Goldman sat in her Buckhead backyard day dreaming, charting a course for her future. She had carefully bid adieu to careers in advertising and education and raised two children with her husband of 26 years. Instead of considering what 9-to-5 jobs would best suit her, she smartly asked herself a deeper question: What makes me happy and what is important to me? Because, after all, if we are lucky enough to recognize our passions and share them, success is sure to follow. Her new business, Catherine’s Table, grew from an interest in comforting people and a desire to somehow fashion that feeling into an enterprise. “We began with the whole house, calling the concept ‘Comfort Goods,’” Maureen says. “We ended up at the table. Many of the most meaningful conversations with our children, Matt and Emma, take place at our table, punctuated by pottery. When I think about comfort, soul, expressing love through craft, I think about the table. It is absolutely the place for us to be.” Catherine’s Table is an online shopping boutique all about soulful dining expressed through handcrafted tableware and stories about the artists who make them. “Our business was inspired by my incredible Aunt Kay, the namesake for Catherine’s Table,” says Maureen. “She taught me how to sew, iron, shuck corn, slice a tomato and churn butter. By example, she showed me how to be a gracious hostess. She set a

light-hearted and artful table. Her love and enthusiasm lifted everyone and indelibly bound us to her.” Maureen has sourced a group of more than 30 less-commercial artisans, living across America, who handcraft unique tableware and accessories. These are artists who represent many of the country’s most treasured craft traditions, men and woman who make tabletop goods with clay, glass, slate, metal, cloth and lots of love. Everything from Catherine’s Table is meant to be used every day and cared for with everyday methods—microwave, dishwasher, clothes washer, dryer. Maureen says she lives with nearly every piece, getting to know how it works best at the table.

She makes each piece with stoneware, which is an excellent choice for tableware—very sturdy. “I love the whimsy in her pieces with hand drawn animals and farm scenes. She also makes mug sets and napkin rings for us, featuring soulful words like gratitude, kindness and joy,” says Maureen. (Tania’s work is featured on our cover and left.) Matt Janke of Janke Studios received a master’s in glass blowing at Kent State and has taught at Georgia State. Virtually all of Atlanta’s glass artists have honed their craft at Janke Studios in Old Fourth Ward, apprenticing under Matt. He makes hand blown glass tumblers for Catherine’s Table (above) in several colors. Matt is a joy to work with, a great collaborator. I love visiting his studio and watching him in action, blowing glass and the blazing ovens. We call one of the glasses he makes The Naked Tumbler because it is clear. It is our best-selling tumbler. They are my everyday glasses at home, too. Devanie Schillip has an MFA in ceramics and has been a potter for nearly 20 years. Her pottery is really elegant. Maureen’s favorite piece is the scalloped pie plate that she uses for all kinds of baking.

Making Music

ustin Beiber. Janelle Monae. Outkast. These are all familiar names commonly attributed as products of the prosperous Atlanta music scene, which has consistently maintained a steady presence, if not omnipresence, on American pop radio in spite of well-documented changes in music trends, sales and sounds. Atlanta’s ability to produce promising artists doesn’t seem to be changing anytime in this new year, given our recent discovery of these local acts on the brink of becoming Georgia-grown music greats. Hannah Zale Toland, now known simply as Zale, was once a nanny. Today she’s a fiery combination of soul, grit and Jack Daniels Honey. You may have heard her playing at Steve’s Life Music in Sandy Springs or at Park Bench in Buckhead during the last year. “I love the music scene in Georgia. There are many opportunities for singers 22

and song writers to showcase their original material, as opposed to some places that only want to hear covers.” Zale’s mix is best displayed than described, particularly on “Maze,” the singer-songwriter’s guitar-led melodic, melancholy ballad that showcases Zale’s sharp vocal. “I wrote ‘Maze’ about dealing with the aftermath of an addiction. I wrote it for my brother who struggles with an addiction problem. It’s about picking up the pieces of your life and making it whole again.” The University of Georgia alumni will release her debut album Fortress this spring, her first effort as a solo act following the breakup of Boomfox, her college band of five years. “Fortress is an eclectic mix of soulful ballads and 60s-inspired, cheeky rock and roll. I think there’s a song for everyone on the album. It took me my whole life to write it and only two weeks to record it. It’s a rock-
er-vibe with some Americana in there, too. It’s got a little bit of weirdness in there. Just like me, “ says the Warner Robins-native. “It’s called Fortress because there’s a lyric in the first song on the record that says ‘I am a fortress, a gated desert island. It tells my audience that not only have I built a fortress around myself in the past year making this record but I’ve built myself into a fortress made up of different genres of music and into this structure that no one can break.” Zale is currently on a promotional tour in advance of the record’s release and may be found performing around the Southeast over the winter. “I just want to be able to get my music out to people that want to listen. That’s the goal--to play my music every single night to people that care to listen to it while making money doing it. And to empower other women out there and tell their stories,” Zale says.

Zale
“I grew up as a teenager playing music in Athens and the rock scene and community there really helped make me who I am today as a musician. I really feel like some of the messages in my music empower young women to be strong and be who they are. I hope to show them [women] that you don’t have to look like everyone else or sound like everyone else to make it.” For more information on Zale, visit HannahZaleMusic.com. Revel in Romance has the type of credentials few are afforded at this early stage of a career. They are currently ranked as the number one rock band on ReverbNation and have opened for talents as major as Josh Groban and The Band Perry. Their recently-released EP, Stripped, features production from Jan “Mama J” Smith, who holds names such as Usher and Matchbox 20 on her extensive roster of clients.

It helps that that the group has talent to match such a lofty resume as evidenced songs like “Things We Don’t Forget,” a climatic clash of somber and splendor with a lead vocal possessing the ability to scale as big or small as needed throughout the four minutes of gloom and grandeur. For more on Revel in Romance, visit RevelInRomance.com Recently billed as “the little rapper with the big heart” following a self-produced music video that tributes his younger sister living with Down syndrome that went viral, Atlanta-born Mathew David Morris, or MattyB, certainly carries a buzz larger than his 11-year-old frame. To add to this, the YouTube sensation has more than 1 billion views, nearly 3 million subscribers and has graced the stages of The Today Show, EXTRA, The Queen Latifah Show and Wendy. Visit MattyBRaps.com for more information on the fifth-grade singer/rapper.
Lexi Noel seeks to see her name mentioned among the likes of Madonna, Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga in talks of pop divas. She already has the dance floor anthems (see her trance-dance single “Boys”), the colorful costumes, larger-than-life music videos, and apparently, production budget of a female pop superstar. For more information, visit LexiMusic411.com. Having a Wikipedia page may very well be the 2015 definition of success. If so, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the four sisters (Kathryn, Annika, Fiona and Petra) that make up alternative folk band von Grey pictured alongside. Next to this achievement, von Grey boasts crystal-clear harmonies that lead against a folksy backdrop of violins, banjos and cellos. For more on von Grey, visit VonGreyMusic.com.

Coworking
Atlanta Tech Village

ork from home, telecommute, freelance, start-up…if any of these describe your current professional status or work arrangement, then add “coworking” to your vocabulary. The concept of holing up outside a traditional office, with your laptop, phone and earbuds to get your work done in a common space is relatively new. Think coffee shop meets Mad Men where productivity, creativity and self motivation are the name of the game. There are a handful of these cowork spaces in Atlanta, from Decatur to West Midtown and right here in Buckhead. Housed in a 103,000-square-foot building, Atlanta Tech Village is designed for technology and technology-related companies that have a unique set of needs. Located in the heart of the Atlanta financial district in Buckhead and right in the middle of the Tech Corridor, ATV is a campus aimed at supporting and inspiring entrepreneurs in order to achieve success through a community that promotes faster connections between talent, ideas and capital. It has easy access to 400 and sits on the corner of Lenox and Piedmont Road, just walking distance to MARTA and over a dozen restaurants. As a central hub, there are always events going on in the space and talented people collaborating on the next big thing in engineering, entrepreneurship, sales and other industries. Companies pay membership dues and fees from $300 upwards to join and use the space but ATV does not take equity in mem24

bers as it is a commercial office building designed for companies with 1-30 employees. Changing the way commercial real estate works, ATV offers space per person, per month with a hybrid of public and private areas rich in amenities, instead of longterm leases based on square footage. Shared common areas cover about 50 percent of the Village so that Villagers, as tenants are referred to, have access to a plethora of conference rooms, game rooms, lounge spaces and workspaces. Monthly membership pricing is all-inclusive and includes office space, furniture, conference rooms, fast internet access, kitchens stocked with snacks and coffee. Other perks of being a member there include game rooms, lounges, free lunch Fridays, office hours with industry experts, social gatherings and networking events. Basically, the feel of an office space without being in a traditional corporate atmosphere. Don’t know if this is for you? Simply sign on for one of their tours and survey the real estate. Day passes are also available and non-members can rent out meeting rooms too. Recent renovations completed in November 2014 have included larger event spaces, training labs, shared conference rooms, indoor/outdoor co-working space, coffee shop and gym space. More than 200 startups and 700 people use the facilities in the building. ATV offers scholarships to assist with reduced pricing for new companies and also organizes several
programs for members and non-members to connect and collaborate. A member directory is readily available to view which cool companies are working here and a job board as well as a mentor listing is available on their website. Founder and CEO David Cummings, a native of Tallahassee, Fla., and now a proud Atlantan, shares the ATV vision. “At the Atlanta Tech Village, we tapped into the desire for more community and collaboration among entrepreneurs and startups,” he says. “Atlanta has a thriving startup scene, but without much density, wasn’t able to reach its potential. The Atlanta Tech Village creates tremendous density amongst the entrepreneurs. Some of the hottest startups in the Atlanta Tech Village include Yik Yak, SalesLoft and Rigor. We already have a number of strong success stories.” This hive of entrepreneurial activity goes beyond the traditional workspace in building a culture and community to address the new way of working that steadily rising technology companies R.S. Five for ’15 Article Rhiannon Bankes

he Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta’s Book Festival began 23 years ago and fea-tured three authors in three days. This year the festival spanned 19 days, featured more than 40 of the year’s most talked about authors, celebrities and influencers, and welcomed more than 10,000 visitors. The festival featured engaging speaker programs, author meet-and-greets, panel discussions and book signings, and has become one of the community’s most anticipated cultural events. Here are five books from the festival we highly suggest you should put on your 2015 reading list: Still Life With Bread Crumbs by Anna Quindlen: Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, opinion columnist, and New York Times bestselling author Anna Quindlen returns with a deeply moving and often very funny story of unexpected love and the changing dimensions of a woman’s life.
The Andy Cohen Diaries by Andy Cohen: Host of Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live, and executive producer of “The Housewives ” franchise, Andy Cohen has a front row seat to an exciting world not many get to see. In this dishy, detailed diary of one year in his life, Andy goes out on the town, drops names, hosts a ton of shows, becomes codependent with Real Housewives, makes trouble, calls his mom, drops some more names, and, while searching for love, finds it with a rescue dog. This funny book is a one-of-a-kind account of the whos and whats of pop culture in the 21st century. 10% Happier by Dan Harris: Co-anchor of Nightline, Abc News and the weekend edition of Good Morning America, Dan Harris had always believed the restless, relentless, impossible-to-satisfy voice in his head was one of his greatest assets. For a while, his strategy worked. Harris anchored national broadcasts; he covered wars. Then he made a series of poor decisions in his personal life that culminated in a televised panic attack in front of an audience of millions. What happened next was completely unforeseen. Through a bizarre series of events, Harris discovered something that helped him tame the voice in his head: meditation. 26

Truth Be Told by Hank Phillippi Ryan: Former on-air reporter for Atlanta’s WSB-TV and award-winning author, Hank Phillippi Ryan is back with another installment in the bestselling Jane Ryland and Jake Brogan series, this one be-ginning with a middle-class family evicted from their suburban home. In digging up the facts on this heartbreaking story—and on other foreclosures— reporter Ryland soon learns the truth be-hind a big-bucks scheme and the surprising players who will stop at nothing, including murder, to keep their goal a secret. Turns out, there’s more than one way to rob a bank. How About Never, Is Never Good For You? by Bob Mankoff: People tell Bob Mankoff that as the cartoon editor of The New Yorker, he has the best job in the world. With the help of his funniest, most beloved cartoons, he traces his love of the craft, allowing us into the hallowed halls of The New Yorker to show us the soup-to-nuts process of cartoon creation, giving us a detailed look not only at his own work, but that of the other tal-ented cartoonists. Throughout the book, we see his commitment to the motto, “Anything worth saying is worth saying funny.” photo by davina pardo

Several upcoming book talks and signings are planned for the beginning of 2015 at the center, including Anita Diamant, Scott Stossel and Laura Lippman. For more information about any of these events, please visit AtlantaJCC.org/BookFestival

Happy New Year: Wine + Exercise = Healthy Heart Article Kaci Kelly | Photography Drew Reggie

reat news for people who love wine: The In Vino Veritas (IVV) study presented at European Society of Cardiology Congress in September by Professor Milos Taborsky of the Czech Republic found that the combination of moderate wine drinking and regular exercise protects you against cardiovascular disease. That is one glass for women and two glasses for men per night, of either red or white wine, and at least two workouts per week to get the heart benefits. LET’S GET MOVING Brookhaven-based fitness and nutrition trainer Kim Schaper offers a fun and healthy pairing of wine and workouts in and around the neighborhood. “Did you know that outdoor exercise has a 50 percent greater positive effect on your mental health than going to the gym? Weather-permitting, get outside,” says Schaper. “My favorite run is on Club Drive around

Capital City Club and its 18-hole golf course. An after-run, after-shower glass of Turnbull Cabernet at Haven restaurant is a great choice. Of course, always hydrate with water first. Make sure and try the roasted local beets and say hello to Chef Stephen Herman. Town Brookhaven is my go-to destination for groceries and the cute boutiques, but it’s also a great place to workout. I think of it as a fitness trail, where the benches in front of CineBistro become my equipment for dips, step-ups and lunges. There are lots of bike racks for cyclists and plenty of biking space. I also like to walk and run my dog around the Town and end up at Lucky’s Burger & Brew on the (heated) patio with my pup and a nice glass of buttery Rodney Strong Chardonnay. Brookhaven manager Pete Hussey is always good for a funny story and warm welcome. You may get lucky enough to run into the restaurant’s Golden Retriever namesake while you’re there.
A game of tennis at Ashford Park is a fun cardio workout paired with a Chilean Santa Ema Sauvignon Blanc at Kaleidoscope. I regularly grab a quick bite at Verde Taqueria in between clients and on weekends. I love the casual vibe and fresh food. Take in the spirit of the season with a holiday walk of lights around the neighborhoods off of Peachtree Dunwoody Road. I like to grab a few friends, bundle up and trek the winding terrain of homes that have decked the halls. It’s great to warm up afterwards with a hot toddy or an Argentinean Zolo, Mendoza Malbec at Terra Terroir.” About Kim: Kim Schaper has been a fitness instructor since 2005 and specializes in the mental, nutritional and physical aspects of fitness. She overcame obesity and an eating disorder through training and now helps those who struggle with weight, body image issues and low self-esteem. KimSchaper.com

Parting Thoughts
Going Forward, I’m Going Local Words Lisa Harrison
I
have a new found appreciation for buying local. I apologize if I’m late to the proverbial party, but those who know me well know this is not unusual. For quite some time, this publication has been spotlighting small, locally owned businesses in our community as well as area restaurateurs who focus on buying local, but still, the concept had not fully sunk in for me. Then I heard some statistics that stuck with me. Maybe I’m more of a numbers girl than my former math teachers were willing to admit! I learned recently that for every $100 spent at a big box or national chain store, roughly $13 remained in the community. But when the same amount was spent at a locally owned establishment, closer to $45 remained in the community. Shopping online keeps zero dollars in the local economy. Sorry Amazon. It was nice knowing
How can (i) explore new ideas and build on the ideas of others?
you, but the few dollars I save will make an important difference when they are invested back into this community that I love. It should come as no surprise then that the vast majority of the advertisers in the magazine you are now enjoying run locally owned, independent businesses as well. Without their support, there would be no Buckhaven Lifestyle magazine. These are the same business owners who have supported us since we launched Buckhaven Lifestyle in 2012. All in all, I have more reasons than I need to put my shopping dollars into locally owned businesses as often as I am able going forward. I hope you’ll join me Lisa Harrison is the national editor of Lifestyle Publications, and editor of three Lifestyle Publications magazines.
