Editor’s Letter

The art around us. O

ne does not have to be an art connoisseur to know that the definition of the word has endless meanings. Art is all around us…from the walls of a prestigious gallery, to the walls of my 3-year-old's room after hijacking the magic markers.

Boulder has long been a breeding ground of many diverse artists. In the same regard, the mystique of the Flatirons has drawn in accomplished artisans from all over the world. Many of these transplants now permanently call Boulder home. In this issue, we take a closer look at a variety of talented artists. From Will Day, New York City investment banker turned abstract painter, to ceramic artists, Liz Quan. If you are totally lost in the art world, please go straight to page 54. We also get a preview of the talent culminated at the Boulder International Film Festival this March. When it comes to art, it’s about making it your own. It’s not about being right or wrong or following a certain path or formula. I learn this lesson best from my kids’ spontaneity and care free spirits. As Pablo Picasso very truly stated, “It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.”

NEW SPACE TELESCOPE CONCEPT COULD IMAGE OBJECTS AT FAR HIGHER RESOLUTION THAN HUBBLE University of Colorado Boulder researchers will update NASA officials next week on a revolutionary space telescope concept selected by the agency for study last June that could provide images up to 1,000 times sharper than the Hubble Space Telescope. CU-Boulder Professor Webster Cash says the instrument package would consist of an orbiting space telescope and an opaque disk in front of it that could be up to a half mile across. According to Cash, diffracted light waves from a target star or other space object would bend around the edges of the disk and converge in a central point. That light would then be fed into the orbiting telescope to provide high-resolution images. The new telescope concept could allow scientists to image space objects like black hole “event horizons” and plasma swaps between stars, says Cash. The novel telescope system also could point toward Earth and image objects as small as a rabbit, giving it the ability to hunt for lost campers in the mountains.

TRAIL REPAIRS WILL LEAD TO THE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF SANITAS VALLEY TRAIL The City of Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) Department has begun repairs to the Sanitas Valley Trail, which sustained significant damage from the 2013 floods. OSMP has closed the Sanitas Valley Trail, except for two small segments that connect with other trails, as the department re-grades and resurfaces the flood-damaged trail, and completes drainage repairs. The Mount Sanitas, East Ridge, Goat and Dakota Ridge trails will remain open during the trail repairs. Heavy equipment will be used in some of the areas that remain open, and visitors should exercise caution while accessing those areas. OSMP will reopen the Sanitas Valley Trail when the repair efforts are completed, which is expected to occur in May.

BOULDER COUNTY AWARDS FUNDING FOR ZERO WASTE PROGRAMS The Board of County Commissioners awarded $50,000 to eight waste-reduction programs as part of the Resource Conservation Division’s zero waste funding programs for 2015. Zero Waste Funding initiatives provide an opportunity for businesses, organizations and individuals within the community to contribute to Boulder County’s long-term vision of moving toward Zero Waste. Boulder County is encouraging the development of programs with an emphasis on demonstrated resource diversion (new tons diverted from disposal) for businesses, residents and governmental buildings. This funding, established in 1997, has awarded a total of more than $989,000 to more than 191 entities representing the whole of Boulder County and Broomfield. This year’s awards should push the 24-year total over $1 million awarded to nearly 200 recipients.

BOULDER’S SUPPORT REACHES NATIONAL HEIGHTS ARTICLE JORDAN LEBOWITZ | PHOTOGRAPHY BRAD TORCHIA

A

rtist Will Day never expected his journey in life to lead him all the way to now. Day describes “now” being the realization of his passion and joy through the awakening of his creative spirit. Day first discovered painting as what he illustrates to be his “expression of inner thoughts that let my heart and soul talk to the world,” at age 13 while working on a watercolor project for Ms. K’s class. Ever since, Day says he had searched to get back to that moment of truth, authenticity and love for something, which is so rare to experience. “Becoming an artist was my version of a mid-life crisis, I suppose,” Day says lightheartedly. “My wife didn’t marry an artist!” Day knows of course that his decades of patience, searching, and support WILL DAY ART AT THE STUDIO (BOULDER) are what allowed 3550 Frontier Ave, Unit A2 him to finally be Boulder immersed in what 917.622.2071 makes him feel WillDayArt.com most alive. 26

Boulder Lifestyle | March 2015

Day “grew up” and had a lot of different jobs but always struggled to connect to people and the world in a way that resonated in his soul. Twenty years after his watercolor experience, his soul awoke again during a tour with the Peace Corps in Tunisia. The language barrier during his trip brought painting and photography to the forefront of a means to communicate. Having worked on Wall Street at Bloomberg Financial Markets for some time and still feeling the void left by the lack of having a creative outlet, Day made the decision to get his master’s degree in architecture, hoping to reconnect with his soul in a more profound way. Little did Day know that a career in architecture wouldn’t be able to quench his undying thirst to realize what he experienced so long ago. However, architecture did provide him with what he calls “the best formal training an artist can have.” Craving to be creative, Day started going behind his garage and painting with oils--something he had never done. Now a nationally recognized Contemporary Abstract Expressionist, Day has a studio in L.A. and a gallery in Greenwich, Connecticut. He can pinpoint the moment he felt comfortable declaring, “I’m an artist.” It was at the July 2009 Downtown Boulder ArtsFair when Day first sold a few pieces. Boulder not only made Day a professional, he credits the tangible support for artists and entrepreneurs

“I had searched to get back to that moment of truth, authenticity and love for something, which is so rare to experience,” says Day.

that oozes from Boulderites, as a big motivator, influencer and support in finding his way to “let the creative spirit flow through him.” The support of Day’s wife, Aimee, has allowed him to change professions multiple times, move across the country and make a myriad of other difficult decisions. Patience, perseverance and love has allowed Day and his family to reach their “now,” which is full of joy and true expression. Now that Day is able to spend his time doing what makes him feel most alive, he wants to return the favor Boulder afforded him when he was still struggling to find his place within the community. His studio is open and bright, as Day invites his clients to be interactive and engaging during the painting process. Day’s invitation is not meant to sell you art, but to allow him to be a part of the community--the community that helped inspire him to reach his passions as real life goals. MOVIE BUFFS TAKE ON BIFF 2015 ARTICLE ERICA BONIFACE

I

f you’re walking along Pearl Street the first week of March and happen to see a guy who may look like Oscar-winning actor, Alan Arkin, no need for a double-take. Chances are it will be Alan Arkin. The Little Miss Sunshine star will be in town for the 2015 Boulder International Film Festival. Arkin will join nearly 25,000 other film enthusiasts, movie lovers and film industry folks for the four-day festival running March 5 to 8. This year’s BIFF has a full docket of must-see flicks, new releases, documentaries, animations, short films—OK, you name the genre, they have it. In fact, there will be a total of 51 films over the course of the festival, with 35 features and 16 shorts. Three of the films are Academy Award nominees—Song Of The Sea (animated feature film), Our Curse (documentary) and Boogaloo And Graham (live action short film). We’re going to be straight with you: Since we thought Super Bad was a fine selection of cinematic gold, we figured it’s best to

talk to an expert or two and get the low-down on the program. We spoke to BIFF’s executive director Robin Beeck and director Kathy Beeck, to hear which films they’re most excited about and to discuss the hot happenings surrounding this year’s festivities. “We want to set the bar higher every single year for BIFF. We feel like we’ve done that for this year’s festival. It’s going to be the best year ever,” raves Robin. If you’re more of a serious film viewer who enjoys watching documentaries, then you have to catch the screening of Academy Award winner, Louie Psihoyos’ latest film, Racing Extinction, which was just shown at the Sundance Film Festival. The documentary is witness to a global problem—mankind’s role in precipitating mass extinction which potentially results in the loss of half of the world’s species. “Racing Extinction is our closing night film. ry will allow us to take attendees out of the theater and into the streets of Boulder. I can’t say any more than that!” says Robin. If you have kids and babysitters are hard to come by over the weekend, have no fear. There are a couple family-friendly flicks to meet your parental needs. “We’re excited to be showing Home and Song Of The Sea for families with kids ages 7 and up. Home is a great 3D film and 20th Century Fox is even bringing the car from the movie and people in costumes to make it a fun experience for attendees. It’s directed by Tim Johnson who also executive produced 2010’s hit film, How To Train Your Dragon. We’re happy to say Tim will also be at the festival this year,” says Kathy. “I also loved Song Of The Sea. It’s not just for kids. I saw it at the Toronto Film Festival and it’s such a perfect film to bring to families.”

After seeing the list of movies for BIFF 2015, we’d say the only thing missing from the festival this year is Ryan Gosling. You can never have enough Ryan Gosling. Ehhhh, maybe next year, BIFF? So mark it on your calendars or just put a Post-It on your bathroom mirror and get ready for BIFF 2015 from March 5 to 8. To purchase tickets, view the full program and attend one of the official parties, discussion panels or special events, visit their website at BIFF1.com. Oh, and if you do happen to see Arkin on Pearl Street, you’ll be able to tell him you’ve got tickets for his big night when he receives a “Career Achievement Award” at the BIFF on March 7.

Renaissance Man A LIFE-SPECIFIC APPROACH TO HEALTH, FITNESS AND HAPPINESS ARTICLE JORDAN LEBOWITZ | PHOTOGRAPHY COLLEEN KELLY

I

t’s difficult to assign a title or term to the professional position Sky Van Horn has created for himself. What do you call an expert that integrates more than 15 years of experience in Thai medicine, Chinese medicine, massage, yoga, martial arts and functional fitness? You could call him an excellent opportunity to reach new personal heights. As owner/operator of Element 6, a holistic health and fitness company, Sky acts as a specialist of sorts. Not as a teacher in one particular discipline, but rather he is a holistic teacher in the true sense of the word. The combination of each tool in Van Horn’s repertoire, used with discretion towards an individual’s needs, crafts an immeasurable learning experience through his truly unique knowledge base.

ELEMENT 6

“Can we improve upon our perfection? I think we all can!” Element 6 – which refers to the six essential elements of the human body - doesn’t just offer fitness regiments, acupuncture and massage sessions. Van Horn’s approach is really about incorporating all aspects of life into your conscious decision making and choosing a more advantageous way of going about each facet. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY - ASKING THE TOUGH QUESTIONS

Van Horn believes, “We are where we are because of the choices we’ve made.” Every client is asked to answer a few questions at the beginning of their program. Most questions revolve around goal setting in regards to mind, body and spirit. The question that truly scares people is the same question that has the potential to garner the greatest results.

That question is: “Where are you hiding in your life? Where are you not fully present? If you put energy there, could you achieve your goals?” Van Horn says, “These are questions people don’t ask a lot…I really don’t care!” FUNCTIONAL FITNESS

“Putting your foot behind your head isn’t functional in any way.” Van Horn develops fitness routines that are both sport and life specific. Sport specific routines revolve around enhancing what an athlete is already doing and focuses on the range of motion and muscle groups that are most prevalent in that activity. Beyond that, creating more space in the body to allow greater flexibility is key and applies to any sport and any life. Life specific fitness is designed to enable us to live our life as we want to rather than have decisions be dictated by injuries or poor range of motion. Life specific training is what allows the dad with a bad back to play catch with his son. TO EACH THEIR OWN

“Each person pulls what they need from me,” says Van Horn. Authenticity can be hard to find. Everywhere we go people have pre-set statements, sales pitches, processes and procedures. Finding a practice that makes no preconceived judgments about what you need and why you need it is special. Van Horn’s only goal for his clients is to, “upgrade and uplift to get fit, be healthy, and live a life you love!”

Elke Bergeron | Maker of Leather Bags and Accessories ByElke.com PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSH BERGERON

When Elke Bergeron first started leatherwork, she used scraps to perfect her craft. “I didn’t even know how to sew,” says Elke. Those beginning days are long gone, and Bergeron now designs and makes her one-of-a-kind bags through her business, By Elke. Bergeron finds inspiration in vintage fabrics and their story, particularly Second World War pieces. She gives old fire hoses and horse brindles a new purpose, which makes each bag incredibly unique. It’s part of the appeal for her customers who appreciate antiquity and fashionable designs. Bergeron used to design for big brands in New York City, but prefers creating her own work in beautiful downtown Boulder, where there are no guidelines or limitations. CONTINUED >

Day-to-day objects such as cups and bowls sparked Liz Quan’s curiosity about how to make hand-crafted objects herself. Quan was drawn to clay because the flexible material can be formed into any sculpture with endless opportunities, and it all starts with a lump of clay. Quan used to work in New York City as an art director. In 2007, she moved to Colorado to pursue a post baccalaureate in ceramics at the University of Colorado. She decided to pursue life as an artist because of her greater satisfaction with working 3-dimensionally and her enjoyment of the creative process.

“I’ve been building things my whole life,” says Collin Schaafsma, owner of Matter Cycles in Boulder. “I started building my designs for myself, and before I knew it, I was making bikes for other people,” says Schaafsma. The bike designing process is very hands on and goes well beyond just measuring someone. Schaafsma’s designs purposely focus on important aspects, like the type of rider and what sort of terrain each customer enjoys. Once he is armed with as much information as possible, he designs and builds a bike exclusive to each customer, physically and aesthetically. Schaafsma’s customers and riding are his chief influences on all of his designs.

“Matter Cycles is about building bikes that matter to me and my customers. The thing that matters most in my bikes is the fun factor.”

“I like my recipes to be accessible to the average person. Baking is 50% following instructions and 50% bothering to do it,” says Wolff.

Lizzy Wolff | Pastry Artist SugarPlusButter.com PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA CARIDAD

By day, Lizzy Wolff is a professional baker at Happy Cakes Bakery in Longmont. By night, she is a dessert food blogger, preaching that anyone can make a cake from scratch. In order to escape the stresses of graduate school life, Wolff got in touch with her more creative side and started baking. “The first recipe I ever tried was rainbow cupcakes. They were such a wild success that I kept baking and haven’t stopped since,” says Wolff. Wolff finds inspiration simply from cravings. For example, during a quick grocery trip, she glanced at an orange chocolate bar and thought, “why buy this candy bar when I can create a cupcake based off of its flavors?” Consequently, the Chocolate Cupcakes with Ganache frosting were born.

Chocolate Cupcakes with Ganache Frosting and Candied Oranges CUPCAKES:

• • • • • • • • • • •

1/2 cup (42g) unsweetened natural cocoa powder* 3/4-cup (95g) all-purpose flour (spoon & leveled) 1/2-teaspoon baking soda 3/4-teaspoon baking powder 1/4-teaspoon salt 2 large eggs, at room temperature 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar 1/2-cup (100g) light brown sugar 1/3-cup (80ml) vegetable oil (melted coconut oil works too) 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2-cup (120ml) buttermilk

FROSTING:

• 1-cup heavy whipping cream • 1lb (16 ounces) semisweet chocolate (chips or coarsely chopped) CANDIED ORANGES

• 3 oranges • 4 1/2 cups sugar • 1 1/2 cups water DIRECTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 350F degrees. Line a 12-cup muffin pan with cupcake liners. Line a second pan with 2 liners this recipe makes about 14 cupcakes. Set aside. Cupcakes: In a large bowl, whisk the cocoa powder, flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together until thoroughly combined. Set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs, sugar, brown sugar, oil, and vanilla together until completely smooth. Pour half of the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Then half of the buttermilk. Gently stir - about 5 stirs. Repeat with the remaining wet ingredients and buttermilk. Stir until *just* combined; do not over mix. The batter won’t be very thick. Pour/scoop the batter into the liners - fill only halfway to avoid spilling over the sides. Bake in batches for 18-19 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool completely before frosting. Mini cupcakes will take about 10 minutes, same oven temperature. Frosting: Heat up the heavy whipping cream in a saucepan over medium heat until it just starts to boil. Pour the cream over chopped chocolate/chips and let sit for a minute. Whisk until it comes together in a smooth ganache. Once combined, use a stand mixer or hand mixer until ganache is light and fluffy. Candied oranges: Boil the 1/4” sliced oranges in water until the rinds for about 20 minutes. Drain them. Whisk together sugar and water in a medium saucepan. Heat until boiling (do not stir after you start heating it). Place your oranges in the sugar water and boil for 12-14 minutes. Remove the oranges from the pot and drain on a cookie rack until it’s cool and dry. CONTINUED >

Gregory Alan Isakov | Singer/Songwriter GregoryAlanIsakov.com PHOTOGRAPHY BRAD TORCHIA Gregory Alan Isakov is a talented indie folk singer-songwriter who now calls Boulder home. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, he started traveling at a young age and has continued to travel all of his life. Experiencing so many different places has impacted his songwriting. “My songs have nothing to do with me; they have a life of their own. A lot of the time I won’t know what a song is about when I’m writing it. It just has a certain feeling about it.” With his new album, The Weatherman, Isakov continues to adventure to new places, touring at venues with an ever-growing audience. “To me, the idea of a weatherman is really powerful. There’s a guy on television or on the radio telling us the future and nobody cares. It’s this daily mundane miracle, and I think the songs I chose are about noticing the beauty in normal, everyday life,” says Isakov.

“For me, music has been as deeply necessary and I guess as plain, for that matter, as something like eating dinner. It's just part of my life. Part of my day. I feel weak and hungry without it. I need it. I doubt I would make art if I felt any other way.”

Curating Local Artists CSART COLORADO ARTICLE EMILY O’BRIEN | PHOTOGRAPHY CORNELIA PETERSON

A

collaboration between Denver Botanic Gardens and Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Community Supported Art Colorado (CSArt Colorado) is one remarkable collective that’s modeled closely on the buy-direct, buy-local spirit of Community Supported Agriculture. “It’s a way to get a curated group of artworks; the cream of the crop is already picked for you,” says Rachel Brand who is one of the CSArt Colorado managers. “It’s good way to support the community in general.” In a nutshell, CSArt Colorado offers art lovers the opportunity to own a specially curated group of artworks from local and regional artists. HOW IT WORKS

Two groups of artworks are available for the 2015 season - Crop shares and Harvest shares. You select either share, each of which has different artists, but beyond that, you cannot pick and choose specific artists or artworks. CSArt Shareholders can subscribe to either receive one share (10 pieces) or two shares (20 pieces). Shareholders then collect the pieces at a lively distribution event, held twice a year, where everyone enjoys cocktails and food. One of the best parts is that artists and shareholders get 46

Boulder Lifestyle | March 2015

the chance to intermingle. That’s right, the buyers hang out with the artists, giving them the opportunity to ask questions, learn about the artist’s process and form a connection. It’s much more interactive than purchasing something from a gallery. The next distribution event will be held on May 28th at the Denver Botanical Gardens. “It’s when the buyers unwrap the works for the first time,” says Brand. The collection of artists and materials is vast. Past artworks have included wooden sculpture, encaustic, letterpress, paintings, poetry books, music, photographic prints and sterling silver spoons, to name a few. All the work is original, although some may be serialized, signed and numbered editions. CSArt Colorado is more than just a curation process. There’s a unique spirit behind the organization with a soul for community and connection. It’s not just about getting a great grab bag of work at the end of the season; it’s much more than that. Being a shareholder shows ample support for Colorado’s creative community, and it’s also a fantastic way to build upon your own personal home collection. Shares of the 2015 crop are available through its website, and all proceeds from the program go directly to fund artists, program supplies, distribution parties and promotion.

sk most people if they have a hobby, and they’ll humbly tell you they dabble, tinker or fiddle around with something. But when you prod further, you learn that many of us crave something more. We want to learn something new that maybe we didn’t even realize we were missing. That’s where Soulcrafting comes in. It works as a concierge of sorts to connect people with creative geniuses who want to teach their skill. The idea of Soulcrafting was envisioned during a chaotic time. Founder Bryan Muir says that the impetus behind Soulcrafting was his experience in the aftermath of the flooding in Boulder. “I didn’t know what to do,” says Muir, who suffered damage to his newly purchased home.

SOULCRAFTING (CONTINUED)

Muir wanted to not only fix the damage to his home, but he also wanted to learn how to care for it. He set out on a search for craftsmen who had the desire to help teach their trade. “This gave me the opportunity to work and learn alongside them,” says Muir. The process reminded him of how he shadowed his father and grandfather. Soulcrafting is useful in the practical sense, but it also is designed to help resonate with people. Here you can learn how to brew your own kombucha, create a hand-sculpted art piece finished in tadelakt, or even master how to do your own repair work on your scooter, motorcycle or ATV.

Let’s take home repair for instance. You could simply hire someone to come in and do the work. Maybe you stick around or maybe you don’t, but the repairman is only there to do the job; it’s a very transactional process. With Soulcrafting you can actually design the product and, in a sense, the experience, to tailor it to exactly what you want. In addition, you’ll learn the craftsmanship and artistry along with it. Regardless of what you choose, you’ll be making something creative with your own two hands to keep or to give away as a present. Either way you’ll learn a new skill and get an amazing experience along with it.

Here are some questions to ask yourself…. 2D OR 3D? FLAT (2D) A SCULPTURE (3D) SCULPTORS

Sculptor, JERRY WINGREN Minimal Incorporates elements of his northwest and Scandinavian heritage with Japanese aesthetics. Wingren’s style is remarkably flexible. From industrially fabricated and painted metal to the ancient art of marble carving.

Sculptor, JOSH PASS Visual Narratives People, perception and dynamics would best describe the subject matter of Joss Pass’ work. He creates sculptures through visual narratives. “Through these visual stories I try to help the viewer feel and notice the balance or imbalance of people’s relations to one another and the environment.” FLAT (2D) DO YOU LIKE ABSTRACT ART? ABSTRACT ART

Abstract Art Painter, CARLENE FRANCES Yin/Yang Describes her art as a natural process of rust, stains and weathering. She creates harmony and balance in all her work, blurring the line between drawing and painting. “In my paintings I use the symbol ENSO, Chinese for circle. It is considered all-powerful and encompassing.”

Abstract Art Painter, MARK VILLARREAL Joyful And Playful Mark is continuing to explore non-objective abstraction with the use of symbols and markmaking. The use of a lyrical line can be consistently traced throughout the paintings, creating negative space and organic shapes.
”I have been painting and exhibiting work for over three decades building up a collection of shapes, along with an ever-evolving sophisticated palette.”

Abstract Art Painter, LISA KOWALSKI Bold, Minimal, Creative, Visual Explorations Lisa describes her methods of line and stroke as “ deliberate, intuitively unidentified.” These explorations evoke sensation in the viewer that are not bounded by the literal, but can be broadly identified as physical, spiritual or psychological. “I am in love with the eloquence of sparseness and everything to do with the act of painting: the smell, the lushness of oil paint, color.” 56

Boulder Lifestyle | March 2015

Abstract Art Painter, ROBERT STRIFFOLINO Inspired by Nature He finds joy and inspiration in the more subtle details in nature, such as wildflowers and grasses. Most of his work falls into three series, waterscapes, tree-forms and garden. “Painting for me, as simply and succinctly as I can say it, is a journey,” says Striffolino. DO YOU LIKE TEXTURE? IS THERE SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT IT THAT YOU CAN TOUCH?

Potter, NANCY UTTERBACK

As an artist and teacher, Nancy recently established the Pottery Lab, as an independent facility apart from the city of Boulder. When it comes to slinging clay herself, she is a self-taught genius, whose originality is equally matched with her humility. “My current work is thrown, altered, slip-decorated, salt or wood fired, and rooted in function. It incorporates every aspect of my daily life.”

ilona Gallery has been a dream for oil painter, Cheri Vilona, and her husband, James Vilona, who has been creating art for over 25 years. Together they designed the interior of the gallery as a reflection of their love of artistic materials, metals, woods and reclaimed steel, bringing a touch of natural warmth to its space. Located at 18th and Pearl Street, the idea behind Vilona Gallery is to create a welcoming space for artwork that includes sculpture, mineral and fossil arts, functional artwork, painting, photography, mixed media and more that resonates with its philosophy of bringing contemporary art with a historical or traditional component. This may be in the form of a subject, selection of materials or artistic process, or a combination. “What we’re currently presenting is functional art with this component of vastly unique artifacts,” says Director Cheri Vilona. Art goers often comment on the uniqueness of the premiere group show in which fossils, minerals and functional artwork are seen intermingled with bronze sculptures, mixed media, painting and photography. Currently there is an emphasis on three-dimensional work. A Mobius bench, James Vilona’s signature piece, always catches people’s attention partly because of its beauty, but also because it’s a piece you can actually touch and sit on. Cheri says, “We are passionate in representing diverse artwork that, through

here is nothing new about Boulder’s most iconic scenery drawing people in. A home near or with a clear view of the Flatirons has always been desirable, even if the home itself is, well, old. But the bones of a well-made home on a good piece of land can live several lives, as demonstrated in the newest breathtaking iteration of the home at 707 8th Street in Boulder. Originally built as a brick ranch home in 1924, it is sometimes called the Phinney House, because Olympic medalist and cycling great, Davis Phinney, and his family are among the former owners. Its current owners were hiking during a visit to Boulder in 2012 and fell in love with the home—already with a second story after at least one major remodel in its history—for the location and views. They purchased it and hired Louisville-based Summit Studio Architects to draw up remodeling plans and Ellis Construction as the general contractor for the project. The home was stripped to its original foundation and frame, and the second level and roof were removed and rebuilt in a refined mountain rustic style using stucco and stone for the exterior with dramatic southern exposure to take advantage of the views. The new kitchen was upgraded to commercial-quality appliances including a Sub Zero under-counter wine refrigerator. The centerpiece of the family room is a dramatic floor-to-ceiling buff flagstone fireplace. Exposed wood and glass appear throughout the home with custom cabinetry in a variety of materials, including beetle kill pine CONTINUED >

The living room and master bedroom ceilings feature stunning tongue and groove, clear vertical grain fir with exposed LVL beams. Floors are five-inch rift and quartered white oak. David Ellis of Ellis Construction says about five feet of the original stone foundation still show on the front elevation of the home and contrast nicely with the beautiful new stucco and glass representing the complete transformation this house has undergone. “I really enjoyed this project,” says Ellis. “It was great to be able to put new life into this older home in such a beautiful area of town.” Ellis—a former CU Buffaloes football player—began his construction career working for national production homebuilders where he honed his project management, customer service and budgeting skills. His appreciation for fine architecture and craftsmanship led him toward smaller, custom homebuilders and eventually to start his own company in 2002.
