Tying the knot...

MAY 2015

In the midst of this issue’s magnificent photo shoot, someone asked if this was really how things went down at my wedding. It was hard not to laugh out loud. Yes, my wedding day was the best day of my life, but there were definitely some stressful moments.

The whirlwind and sometimes chaotic nature of wedding planning just comes with the territory. How many times in our life do we get to have all of our favorite people in our life with us for a full day, or weekend? Leaving the heavy lifting and details to a professional is certainly one way to avoid some of the unforeseen speed bumps that come with the territory. Before our wedding, I thought the concept of “wedding crashers” was just the theme of a funny Owen Wilson movie. When 500 people showed up to our wedding, (which 450 had RSVP’d), it made for one heck of a party. Here in Boulder County, we are fortunate to have amazing natural backdrops, venues, and some of the most talented professionals in the business. I had the fortune of working with some of these vendors during a recent shoot at the Highland City Club. I was blown away by the individual talent that came together. They helped us put together inspirations, love stories and wonderful details to ensure you enjoy each page. Another aspect of this season that cannot be overlooked is Mother’s Day. Two months after our wedding, all it took was one trip to Santa Barbara, an awesome Led Zeppelin cover band, and we had our first child on the way. Six years into our marriage, we are thrilled to have our fourth child on the way in the fall. Being a mother of three children, each day is an adventure. For every treacherous diaper, yogurt slung on the wall, and melt down, there is the joy of a child’s hug, unfiltered questions about life, and “Mommy, I love you”. Cheers to all the moms out there for all the sacrifice and love you pour into your children.

FRASCA’S BOBBY STUCKEY NAMED SOMMELIER OF THE YEAR According to Wine Enthusiast, Bobby Stuckey of Frasca Food and Wine is the deserving recipient of the title “best sommelier in the country.” This award does not come as a surprise to anyone familiar with the restaurant located on Pearl Street in Boulder. Stuckey’s passion for wine is evident as he still floats through the dining room nightly to offer genuine and impassioned recommendations to his guests. This authentic eagerness to provide guests with the best experience possible is a major reason why the restaurant was nominated for the James Beard Award for Outstanding Wine Service from 2010-2012, and won the prestigious prize in 2013. On January 26, 2015, Bobby Stuckey was honored at the Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards Gala in New York City. Huge Congratulations to Boulder’s own!

Voss Art and Home ARTICLE EMILY O'BRIEN | PHOTOGRAPHY LISA DOANE

O

nly a few months after opening its doors, Voss Art + Home already has a distinct, unique style. The focus is on art, home, jewelry and baby items. In the heart of Boulder, this lifestyle store has something special for everyone, from exclusive art to custom furniture to home décor accessories imported from over seas. During the afternoon when I stopped in to meet with co-owner and artist Sondra Voss, the space was in the middle of an art installation. Sizable, gorgeous paintings were being carried in and moved about. Sondra commented the store is also in a continual state of renewal; the front windows and door space transform every two weeks or so and the inventory changes often. Between the cozy chairs, handmade jewelry and one-of-a-kind art, one could spend quite a bit of time wandering, searching and combing through this life-sized treasure chest. As an artist who also does interior design work, Sondra Voss and her husband, Greg, pooled together all of their talents to launch the store. Sondra’s paintings can be found at The Ritz Carlton, senators’ offices, hospitals, on the showroom floor and more. She keeps a painting studio in the back to help to help maximize time and space. Greg handles the finances. They travel around the world to collect goods at antique stores and auctions to bring back; items in the store are a collection of vintage, fair trade and often from other vendors not already found in the Boulder area. All artwork is created by Colorado artists. “We have items starting at $2 up to $12,000,” states Sondra. POP UP SHOP The Pop Up Shop, which is essentially a store within a store, rotates vendors every two weeks. The artisans in the showroom are selected to briefly offer a line that is not otherwise available at VOSS. The Pop Up Shop compliments the curated collection, but with a twist. “It’s always fresh, always changing and is compatible in nature to what the store already sells.” says Voss. “It really exposes our clients to artists that maybe wouldn’t normally be in the store.” HOME INSTALLATION Voss provides the complimentary use of an art installer so clients can have pieces delivered and installed to ensure it’s a good fit before a full commitment. It also offers free local delivery on all furniture and art in Boulder. VOSS Art + Home may very well be a lifestyle store, but it’s also an experience. A boutique with curated goods with stories behind them of where they came from and how they were crafted. I must admit, I left wanting one of everything. sneak off to sedona arizona ARTICLE ANDY MANZ

P

erched a few thousand feet above the Arizona desert lies one of the most beautiful and unique towns in our great country: Sedona. Majestic red rock formations and canyon walls frame the city boundaries. Aside from the sheer picturesque beauty of Sedona are the multitude of tourism attractions. Boutique hotels, spas, golf courses and art galleries all make their presence known, but in a way that respects the landscape of the area. My wife and I recently had the pleasure of spending a romantic anniversary weekend here. After having three kids in five years, we were certainly excited to celebrate a few nights together in the midst of this wondrous setting. There are many worthy lodging options in Sedona. L’auberge de Sedona initially stood out to us because of the private cabins scat36

tered along the river. Once we arrived, we soon realized that L’auberge was more than just a pretty face. The unassuming driveway that led to the inn meandered along the river until a dead end in a circle drive. From there, we were promptly greeted by the valet and in an instant, there was a team of resort staff handling our every need. The creekside cabins come in several different floor plans, depending on the size of your group. Our one bedroom suite with sitting area, outdoor cedar shower, and south facing deck was exactly what the doctor ordered. The wood burning fireplace in our room made the drizzly, cool day a welcomed change from the above average Phoenix heat we had recently experienced. The spa at L’auberge lived up to the hype as well. Regarded as one of the top resort

spas in the country, the services include both traditional and European treatments as well as healing techniques such as Reiki. If you prefer to have your spa experience creekside or in the privacy of your Cottage, just say the word. The deep tissue massage was a welcomed treat after a three-hour plane ride. My wife enjoyed a lighter Swedish massage, as well as a 90-minute facial. The therapist even came with a Russian accent. When the sun dipped down below the iconic rock formations, we were more than excited for our dinner at the acclaimed L’auberge Restaurant on Oak Creek. Offering both indoor and outdoor seating options, the cuisine is rooted in French sophistication, with a modern American twist. The knowledgeable wait staff guided us through four impressive courses, complete with wine

while in sedona… WHERE TO EAT:

L’auberge Restaurant at Oak Creek French + Modern American fine dining Oaxaca Restaurant For casual, Southwestern fare. Outdoor balcony overlooking Sedona red rock landscape make this a perfect spot for lunch and an afternoon margarita. Heartline Cafe Nestled below “Thunder Mountain” in West Sedona lies a cozy European style building with a secret garden. With an eclectic menu of gourmet foods blended perfectly with seasonal (local and organic when available). WHERE TO DRINK:

Oak Creek Brewery is located conveniently in the Talquepaque arts and crafts village just off the main drag in town. If hops interest you more than shops, this is your place to escape with a fresh craft brew. The brewery is open seven days a week, and also features live music Friday - Sunday. Vino Di Sedona is West Sedona's newest wine bar and beer garden that features some of the best local musical talent in Sedona. WHAT TO DO:

and signature cocktails. Speaking of vino, the restaurant is known for one of the most expansive wine programs in the entire southwest region of the country. When we arrived back at our cabin after dinner, a staff member personally delivered our desert to our room as we were too full to enjoy it after dining. Pine and cedar burn fast, so of course the wood supply on our porch was replenished, along with a new fire ready to be lit in the fireplace. The next morning, we enjoyed breakfast on our porch as couples and families quietly strolled the banks of the creek. Our stay at L’auberge certainly ranks up there as one of our all time favorites. The wide range of activities and scenic exploration Sedona has to offer is certainly a reason for us to become repeat guests at this world-class resort.

what to bring:

Pink Jeep Tours has become the unforgettable, you-gotta-do-it thrill of any Sedona visit. This is a great way to get out into the red rocks and learn about Sedona history. Barlow Jeep Rentals For the more adventurous out there, you can rent a jeep and drive your own tour. Mapped out tours including scenic drives to see the Indian ruins or great picnic spots. HIKING

Local Favorite trails include Doe Mountain, Devil’s Bridge, Soldiers Pass and Cathedral Rock. You can’t go wrong with any. SHOPPING

Tlaquepaque is one of the most famous shopping districts in Sedona. Filled with art galleries, shops and dining, this is one place not to pass up. Ninox weekender bag

Love Your Skin GET SUMMER-READY AT VASU SKIN SOLUTIONS

ARTICLE ERICA BONIFACE | PHOTOGRAPHY LISA DOANE

S

ummer is right around the corner. Vacations are being booked. Bikinis are being purchased. All that’s left on the checklist of fun in the sun is a visit to one of our favorite Boulder spots, Vasu Skin Solutions. After all, you don’t want to get stuck poolside with unwanted hair. Unless, of course, you’re into that sort of thing. Jennifer Fisher (owner/founder/esthetician/laser technician rock star) and the entire team at Vasu Skin Solutions can get your skin ready for the sunny months ahead with the best in laser skin care and laser hair removal. The medical spa offers a state-of-the-art laser, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), chemical peels, dermafile and dermaplaning, laser hair reduction and laser skin care—all in a relaxing, dreamy atmosphere. The only thing missing? Well, Ryan Gosling feeding you grapes would be nice. "All of our services are custom fit for each client’s skin type, lifestyle, goals and budget," Fisher says. Now let’s talk about the ridiculously cool laser hair removal treatment. Vasu uses a laser light to attract melanin in the hair follicles—which then destroys the follicle without harming surrounding tissue. Once it’s destroyed, it won’t produce hair. You’ll need multiple treatments depending on the body part. But, hey, if it means no more shavers and razor burns, we’ll take it. “We stand behind our work and do our absolute best to make everyone feel unique and special. We do not skimp on ingredients

or steps—and we use the highest quality products for sanitization, treatments and equipment,” explains Fisher. Colorado is truly the best state to live in, but let’s admit it right now: the dry climate can be harsh on the skin. So before you march outside in your new flip-flops and maxi dress, Fisher says it's important to stay on top of your beauty routine if you want to keep that summer glow. “Sunscreen should be your best friend. Believe it or not, high-quality products make a world of difference," Fisher says. Vasu offers a series of SilkPeel treatments to help battle the dry Colorado climes. They are state-of-the-art exfoliation treatments that a deliver client-specific serums. You don’t have to be Kim Kardashian to receive the best skin treatment and hair removal around. Visit Vasu Skin Solution’s website and set up a complimentary consultation today at VasuSkinSolutions.com.

Real Weddings: Leigh + Paul A MAPLETON HILL BACKYARD WEDDING ARTICLE DANA LAPINEL

L

eigh Romano and Paul DiBona first crossed paths in Boston while working at Whole Foods. They had an instant connection, but life milestones would soon get in the way. Paul was on his way to Chicago for work, and Leigh just graduated from college and was en route to the Big Apple. Despite the distance, the two stayed in touch. “Three years later when I moved back to Boulder I convinced him to come visit. Six months later he moved here,” says Romano. When it came to the proposal things were a little less unexpected. Romano’s father excitedly called her one day and blurted, “Congratulations…I mean how’s the barn?” “I knew then and there it was going to happen, but it was a matter of when,” says Romano. While on a trip to the west coast, the couple enjoyed vineyards, breweries, a Giants game and a marriage proposal. “Two of my best friends were with us, and halfway across the Golden Gate Bridge we stopped to take a picture…he got down on one knee and proposed,” says Romano. When they started planning their big day, there was no question where their wedding would be.

Boulder Lifestyle | May 2015

“My parent’s home on Mapleton Hill is beautiful. Since the time I could imagine having a wedding I always knew I wanted to have it there,” says Romano. Romano’s mother, who is gifted with a green thumb, and Susan McCausland, owner of Beyond Gardens, helped execute their wedding theme vision of traditional garden. Roses, hydrangeas and dahlias were lighted with lanterns, and bistro lights streamed across the yard. To make the theme complete, Sarah Cioni of Painted Primrose created floral arches and flower décor. “I think we added just the right amount of floral to an already full garden,” says Romano. Romano had a personal connection with many of the individuals that helped with the event. Leah Colby of La Dolce Events CONTINUED >

was her wedding planner, and also a longtime childhood friend. “She worked with us for countless hours transforming our yard into a wedding venue. She had a solution for everything, especially when I had my little freakouts,” says Romano. Romano’s Maid of Honor, Catherine Icaza, owns The Monogrammed Home in Pasadena, California, and supplied many of the wedding details such as unique paper products. One of Romano’s most memorable moments were the handwritten vows the couple shared. “I think that was one of the most special part of the wedding because nothing was generic, and we vowed things we truly meant. Even if it included getting Paul to become a Broncos fan, and to always drink good beer together,” says Romano. After the big event, the couple spent three days in Aspen, one of their favorite places to unwind.

WHIMSICAL SOPHISTICATION

Inspired by a blend of town and country living, and of course charmed love, the shoot setting was in the elegant Historic Highland City Club in downtown Boulder. This venue has a relaxed atmosphere, yet the mixture of soft and rich colors inspired by the color of the year Marsala, helps define the classic romantic imagery. Of course the Historic Highland Building’s natural old world charm greatly contributed to setting an intimate mood. Take inspiration by embracing old world vintage, with fashionable new trends. It’s traditional with a twist. The textured crop top wedding gown from Anna Bé, and the plaid suit jacket from Weekends Boulder, is a great example of how to mix new chic and trendy looks that blend effortlessly amongst the timeless surroundings. Captured by Rebecca Caridad Manzanita, enjoy the warm, vibrant tones that will melt your heart, and inspire your big day. CONTINUED > 50

WESTERN LOVE AFFAIR

When it comes to planning your wedding, draw inspiration from your surroundings. And with backdrops such as Windy Creek Ranch, there is really no shortage of inspiration. We invite you to fall in love with countryside living and its definitive down-to-earth feel. Leather accents, natural flower foliage and free-flowing wedding gowns (that you can literally ride a horse in) are all the perfect style cues from nature to play up your wedding. Sometimes simplicity is key, and when relying on the natural beauty of the great Wild West, there is little to no chance that it won’t be a breathtaking event. Textures of the landscape are your decorations. And simple modern esthetic with subtle pops of color can create a memorable impression that doesn’t overshadow the natural beauty of the great outdoors. CONTINUED >

8 PICNIC SPOTS NOT TO MISS OUT ON THIS SPRING

Springtime in Boulder comes with an abundance of outdoor fun. Kick off that winter garb, grab a blanket and return to the earth for this spring's best picnicking spots. 1. CHAUTAUQUA PARK

Picnic on the park lawn while enjoying live music from the historical Chautauqua Auditorium. 2. BETASSO PRESERVE

Located just a short drive up Boulder Canyon. Adorned with private areas perfect for an outdoor meal.

Picnic spot picks by Will and Coral Frischkorn, of Cured. 1. WONDERLAND. This is one of our top picnic locations. Head to the West side of Wonderland lake, and about 15 minutes straight up the hill behind it. When the trial crests a false summit, walk out to the edge, spread a blanket under the lone tree, and look down on the world below. 2. THE TWO WHEELED PICNIC. Load up your bicycle basket with provisions and hit the Boulder Creek Path. Each time we go we find a new spot to stop, so as you cruise along, look for the tucked away bench or quiet cove by the creek and stake your claim.

3. WHIMSY FARM

After picking fresh fruit off the vine, enjoy a picnic on the provided tables or scope out a spot of your own on this sprawling property. 4. BOULDER RESERVOIR

Views of kayakers, paddle boarders and summer sun bathers accompany your private picnic on one of Boulder's largest water areas. 5. GROSS RESERVOIR

In addition to picnicking, this slightly more rustic area boasts fishing, hiking and camping opportunities.

3. LOVERS LANE. Don’t be dissuaded by the cheesy name, this is

one of Downtown’s best kept secrets. It’s an intimate, tucked away retreat just minutes from the bustle of Pearl street. And the best part is, if you run out of wine or cheese, you can just walk on down to the shop and restock. Walk up 22nd St until it crosses Bluff, head up the stairs and voilà. CONTINUED >

ARTICLE EMILY O'BRIEN

I love travel. In some ways, it gives me time to think. In others, it allows me to give myself permission to do things I normally wouldn’t do. "Live a little!" as my grandmother would always say. Whether you like to travel luxuriously, rustic or B&B style, near or far, we’ve got you covered.

GET OUT OF TOWN

LUXURIOUS // GATEWAY CANYONS RESORT & SPA (GATEWAY, CO)

Recently ranked the No. 1 Best Resort in Colorado and No. 12 Best Resort in the World by Condé Nast Traveler’s 2014 Readers’ Choice Awards, Gateway Canyon is simply spectacular. Book the new Jurassic Experience package and experience luxury accommodations, a round-trip private helicopter tour to the Museum of Western Colorado, a gourmet picnic lunch for two and a keepsake book to boot…and that’s just the beginning. Activities on the grounds include an adventure center, stables, auto museum, Driven Experiences, spa, air tours and more. GatewayCanyons.com

RUSTIC // BED & BREAKFAST // PURPLE MOUNTAIN LODGE (CRESTED BUTTE, CO)

This Crested Butte chic boutique is where you want to go to get away from it all. This traditional bed and breakfast features only six lavish rooms. The owners customize each guest’s stay by recommending and even scheduling activities that are right for them. Do use their knowledge on all things Crested Butte and get the low down on the best places to fly fish, bike, hike and golf this summer season. You’ll love that it’s within walking distance to Elk Avenue—the area’s National Historic District, too. PurpleMountainLodge.com

RUSTIC // RED CLIFFS LODGE (MOAB, UT)

For those of you who want to build in some adventure, Red Cliffs Lodge is the ideal springboard for a journey. Every room at Red Cliff Lodge is a mini suite complete with patios that face either the Colorado River or Castle Creek (which runs through the property), making your stay both scenic and private. Between the solid log wood furniture and knotty pine accents inside the rooms and the rustic and magnificent views outside, it’s easy to feel the spirit of the West run deep. Twenty-foot, vaulted ceilings with windows nearly to match make it hard to rush off after a meal. On-site is a complimentary movie museum jam-packed with classic film memorabilia, props and set pieces from Westerns and even a few showcases of modern-day flicks–all filmed in the area. Voyage seekers can saddle up and ride gentle cowboy-trained quarter horses on a trail or experience open range style riding. There’s also tennis courts and hiking trails, and the hotel will help arrange ATV or mountain bike rentals, river rafting, canyoneering or jet boat tours allowing you to truly choose your own adventure. Top off the day with a tasting at Castle Creek Winery, located on the grounds. RedCliffsLodge.com May 2015 | Boulder Lifestyle

Use 2-3 different types of flowers and keep low to the edge of the vase for a clean and professional look.” -lara debroux

STEP 1 The first step to any gorgeous floral arrangement is to prepare your flowers. Make sure you clean off any foliage that will fall

Spring offers such an incredible bounty of beautiful flowers that we couldn’t resist the opportunity to gather together some of our favorites to create a lush spring centerpiece perfect for the many gatherings that happen at this time of year: showers, graduation parties, bridal teas and other special occasions.

below the water line. Leaves in the water will encourage the growth of bacteria, which will shorten the life of your arrangement. STEP 2 Next, prepare your container. Bend your chicken wire to fit snugly inside the container. The chicken wire acts as a grid to hold your flowers where you want them, giving your design the shape you want.

STEP 4 Turn your vessel around in slow circles as you design, continuing to place your larger, fluffier flowers a little lower, with your line flowers slightly taller. Begin to fill in with your foliages. STEP 5 We finished our arrangement with blooming apple branches and clematis. The viney clematis is the perfect finishing touch. We let ours peek out above our other flowers to give the piece a very wild look.

STEP 3 Begin by gathering and placing some of your large, fluffy flowers in a group–here, peonies and spray roses. It gives the arrangement a beautiful focal point. Next, add in some of your longer-line flowers (in our piece we used the lilac and tulips). Use the long-line flowers to create a wild, garden-esque shape. Movement is key–let the flowers reach and swoop–it will give your piece so much life. May 2015 | Boulder Lifestyle

Open House

rock solid landscape HOT REAL ESTATE MARKET AND RISING TEMPERATURES MAKE IT THE PERFECT TIME TO ENHANCE YOUR OUTDOOR LIVING AREA ARTICLE ERICA BONIFACE

T

he Boulder housing market is hot right now -- we mean like hotter than '90s Will Smith here, folks. The average listing price of a four-bedroom, two-bath house was tops in the state last year at more than $835,000. But, if you're not looking to sell right now, you can still take advantage of the extra home equity and jump on that new redesign project you've been daydreaming about. With summer soon approaching, adding livable outdoor space is the perfect way to get jiggy with it. "Colorado is a state where you can enjoy all nature has to offer 365 days a year," says John Herron, general manager at RSL Outdoor Living Solutions. "With our designs this can be possible." He's not kidding, either. Picture, if you will, a bubbling water feature towering 8- to 10feet tall in your own backyard. Or how about that new stone fireplace you’ve secretly fantasized about? Extra square footage with a new flagstone patio? Or how about enjoying some of our 300 days of sun a year in a spectacular modern pool? Whatever your ideal backyard looks like, RSL Outdoor Living will make you feel like a straight-up fresh prince as they focus in on your needs. “We enjoy working with each and every client to create what they truly want,” Herron says. They've been delivering projects that exceed expectations in Boulder and parts beyond since 2001. (The Muhammad Ali biopic “Ali” was in theaters back then, for reference.) Herron says the company has grown organically since then, through referrals and recommendations based on their professionalism, creativity and quality of work. “We specialize in providing the best there is in regards to the design and construction of outdoor living areas and landscapes,” Herron 86

Boulder Lifestyle | May 2015

says, “beyond that which a typical landscape company might offer.” Go big, or go home. Am I right? So, flex that home equity power. A built-in backyard grill and entertainment area are calling your name. Add in some custom lighting, stone benches and soften it with lush plantings. Imagine it -- you could be roasting s’mores with the family around your brand new fire pit by Independence Day. “We have seen our designs and installations provide countless hours of family and friend time that they might have been missing before,” Herron says. “The new landscapes we create allow our clients to truly enjoy their outdoor spaces.”

5 EASY TIPS TO A BETTER SUMMER YARD FROM RSL OUTDOOR LIVING

1. Aerate 2. Clean out all the winter debris and leaves in the beds 3. Ramp up your sprinklers (maybe ask for a professional to assist if necessary) 4. Trim shrubs so they keep their shape into the season 5. Install an outdoor living area - you will get more use and enjoyment out of this than another trip to the beach.

“We enjoy working with each and every client to create what they truly want,” Herron says.

9 a.m.-3 p.m. Ages 3-9 Spring has sprung and the buds and flowers are blooming with color. There is nothing like the inspiration we get from natural beauty. In our May camps, we will be looking at the art of flowers, from drawing and painting flowers, to looking at flowers as art themselves. We will be working with the fundamentals of ikebana, Japanese flower arranging to influence our work, and children will have the opportunity to make their own ikebana arrangements. LocHeartArts.com
