Bring it On!

JANUARY 2016

O

h, January! The holiday rush is nearly over and it’s time to focus on all things new, including the New Year! Traditionally it’s a time for us to make plans, set life-changing goals, and get our closets organized. It can also be a time where some choose to create new and dedicated strategies to work on their fitness and other health related issues.

I gave up traditional resolutions a long time ago! Instead, in the interest of continuing education, I tend to pick a subject to delve into for a year-long independent study project, with the goal of expanding my knowledge about a topic that interests me. Talk about needing dedication! I’m also devoted to taking care of my overall health - with the goal of being a healthy older person someday - and therefore my fitness. Daily walks have long provided an opportunity to get out, get fresh air, and a sometimes even a new perspective on whatever may be weighing on my mind. When life becomes hectic and busy, or my creativity feels sluggish, heading outdoors to breathe some fresh air with a long trek up one of Boise’s wonderful Ridge to Rivers trails is often just the answer. This past year I experienced a hot yoga class for the first time, and it’s quickly become my newest passion - or obsession - depending on who you ask. Either way, I’m finding it to be a fantastic challenge. I hope you find inspiration in our January issue! And whatever your plans are for the coming year, I wish you luck! I know you can do it! Happy Trails,

Bogus Basin

IT’S TIME TO GET YOUR SKI ON!

1754 BOGUS BASIN RD 83631 / (208) 332.5100 Bogus Basin Ski Resort is known as the “locals resort” with a mere 16 mile road trip North of Boise. The draw is “let’s get out of town quick for some fun”! This time of year, the resort creates a winter wonderland for skiers, snowboarders, and tubers. An aggressive fall cleanup plan was completed which prepared the mountain for winter. All the named runs were mowed to remove summer grasses and shrubs. An off-run brush cutting plan opened new terrain on the Superior and Pine Creeks lifts. While enjoying the day on the mountain, dining on the mountain is part of the experience. Bogus Basin has always featured two restaurants, one in each of the two mountain lodges, making the perfect place to meet up with family and friends after a couple of exhilarating runs. Come enjoy a meal at the Simplot Lodge which is located at the base area or the Pioneer Lodge, situated higher at mid-mountain, which offers incredible views of the ski trails and the Valley. This year, for the first time, skiers will be able to enjoy a brand new restaurant on the third floor of the Simplot Lodge, which will give guests some new and exciting menu options. The new restaurant, Frontside Pie, will feature thin crust pizzas and also serve hearty nachos, beef & chicken tacos, and a variety of healthy salads, delicious soups, and soft drinks, beer and wine. Guests can truly relax and enjoy a great day on the mountain with live music on the weekends. But the fun doesn’t stop for the winter. Larger music events and ale festivals are being planned. This coming year, Bogus Basin will become a year-round destination to relish. Summer 2016 will see an expansion of summer recreation that will reward those who come up for cool mountain weather, fresh air, and amazing views of the Boise National Forest and Treasure Valley. Bogus Basin will provide a range of activities all summer including mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, disc golf, weddings, and festivals with music breezing through the air. f you’re not taking care of your oral health, you could be jeopardizing a lot more than your pearly whites. So say

researchers who link gum disease with a host of other health problems. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, up to 80 percent of American adults have some form of periodontal (gum) disease. The disease is caused by the natural buildup of bacteria, mucus, and other particles on the teeth as plaque. If plaque is not properly cleaned away, it can infect the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. Many people have mild cases of gum disease, called gingivitis, which is characterized by swollen, red and bleeding gums. If left untreated, gingivitis can become a more serious form of gum disease known as periodontitis, which affects about 12 percent of Americans. Periodontitis occurs when gums pull away from the teeth, causing pockets to become infected. This, in turn, triggers the body’s immune system as it fights the bacteria spreading below the gums. Researchers believe that periodontal disease may cause additional health problems by circulating bacteria from the mouth through the bloodstream, causing new infections and possibly, inflammation in other parts of the body — not to mention, an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

Delta Dental of Idaho is the leading dental benefits carrier in the state, providing quality, affordable dental plans for both companies and individuals. We’re a not-for-profit organization working to improve the dental health of all Idahoans through our community outreach programs. Nationally, Delta Dental member companies provide coverage to more than 60 million Americans. For more information, visit our website at DeltaDentalID.com.

RISK FACTORS FOR GUM DISEASE

• Smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco • Having diabetes • Having an autoimmune disorder • Being pregnant • Having relatives with gum disease People with diabetes are particularly prone to problems because high glucose levels in saliva may help bacteria thrive. For pregnant women, periodontal disease increases the chance of delivering a premature baby. Thankfully gingivitis can be prevented and even reversed with good oral hygiene. Do your health a favor and take care of your gums by following the steps below: • Brush your teeth gently, at least twice a day, using a fluoride toothpaste and pay special attention to the gum line. To maximize your toothbrush’s effectiveness, replace it every three or four months or sooner if the bristles begin to fray. • Floss at least once a day. Many people consider flossing optional. But flossing is the only reliable way to clean out harmful bacteria between teeth and under the gum line, where a toothbrush can’t reach. Your teeth aren’t truly clean until they’re brushed and flossed. • Eat a nutritious diet. Avoid sugary snacks and beverages. • Don’t smoke or use tobacco products. Studies show that smoking actually lowers the success of certain gum disease treatments. • See your dentist for routine check-ups and professional cleanings. Your dentist will check for gum disease and, if you do have it, will recommend a treatment plan to follow at home. Visiting the dentist regularly is one of the best ways to prevent gum disease and the time, expense, and discomfort involved in treating it. Before your dental visit, you may want to take a quick oral health assessment to learn more about the risk factors associated with gum disease and tooth decay. Delta Dental of Idaho offers a free online self-assessment tool at DeltaDental.com/MyDentalScore.

amily ties can be powerful things. Witness Casey Dillabaugh. After spending every summer since he was 12 years old scraping floors at job sites and working in his father’s warehouse at Dillabaugh’s Floor Covering and Design in Nampa, he left for college in San Diego saying he was never coming back, the flooring business was not for him. Casey was just starting to crawl when his father, Cal, and his grandfather, Wilson, started the family business in 1982, and even then he seemed to be trying to leave the nest. Stories of the youngster continually crawling out the front door and heading down the street are family lore. Business was good, and over the years, Cal’s hard work and diligence paid off. It wasn’t long before they had to move to a larger Nampa location, and as the Treasure Valley continued to grow, they added two more stores in Boise and a fourth in Payette. “He also diversified the business quite a bit,” says Casey. “We’re not just flooring any more, and in addition to our retail stores we do a lot of work with new home developers. We create countertops in our own granite fabrication plant, offer custom cabinetry and window treatments.”

In 1990, Cal joined a national buying group called Carpet Max. By 2001, it had been bought by Flooring America, a division of CCA Global, the largest floor covering cooperative in the world. All of its 400-plus members own their own stores and use their joint buying power to get better pricing from manufacturers. “We go to the mills and say we’re all going to take on the same products and market them the same way,” Casey explains. “And the power of the group allows us to pass those savings on to our customers.” CONTINUED >

In case it isn’t obvious, Casey did return. Despite spending four years after college in a dream job as Charity Programs Coordinator for the Century Club of San Diego, whose sole function is putting on the Buick Invitational PGA Tournament each year, those family ties just wouldn’t let go. So, in 2008, he and his wife returned to Idaho and the family business. “It was the worst possible time to move into a construction-related business,” Casey says with a smile. “But it was just time to come home.” By 2011, the company had started to come out of the doldrums, along with the rest of the construction business, and Casey had worked his way up to vice president of retail operations. Then, in January of this year, Cal decided to retire, and happily sold the business to his son. Beyond continuing the family ties, Casey truly feels he has found his place in life. “I tell the staff all the time, we are blessed beyond measure,” Casey says. “This has been the busiest year in our 34 years of existence and, honestly, we still have room for growth.” And with growth in the Treasure Valley showing no sign of slowing down any time soon, it seems safe to say that the Dillabaugh family will be making homes more comfortable and stylish for at least another generation.

ORANGETHEORY FITNESS MERIDIAN

“Fitness is a passion of mine,” says Aundrea McCarroll, Studio Manager of Orangetheory Fitness Meridian. “Until now there has never been a proven scientific way to guarantee results. Once I tried Orangetheory Fitness I was hooked and knew I had found the new revolution of fitness.” “People want more engagement and accountability in their workouts,” explains McCarroll. “We provide both with a smaller, more personalized experience, with each member’s workout being tracked through a heart-rate monitor and directed by a personal trainer. Both member and trainer can determine if the member is achieving the optimal heart rate performance. After the workout, the member receives an electronic scorecard that displays his/her calorie ‘burn,’ as well as duration of time spent in each of the heart rate zones.” Ranked as one of the best workouts today by Men’s Journal, Orangetheory Fitness (OrangeTheoryFitness. com/Meridian) was called by The New York Times “The best one-hour workout in the country.” Orangetheory Fitness is a one-of-a-kind, heart-ratebased, group personal training workout broken into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training, otherwise known as HIIT (high intensity interval training). Backed by the science of excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), Orangetheory Fitness is designed to stimulate your metabolism and increase energy. Classes are led by skilled instructors. Using a variety of equipment including rowing machines, treadmills, TRX straps and free weights, participants burn an average of 500 to 1000 calories per class. The result is the Orange Effect--more energy, improvement in endurance, weight loss, visible toning, and an extra calorie burn for up to 36 hours post-workout (the Orangetheory Fitness after-burn). Launched in 2010, Orangetheory Fitness has quickly become one of the world’s top fitness franchises, with more than 300 studios in 35 states, and more than 600 franchise licenses awarded in the United States, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Columbia and the United Kingdom. “It’s incredible that in just five years we’ve been able to muscle our way into the highly competitive fitness industry and become a leader,” says Orangetheory Fitness CEO Dave Long. McCarroll is looking forward to opening the new studio in January 2016, in time to help those who are establishing fitness goals in the new year. She encourages

AN OLD KITCHEN COMES TO LIFE ARTICLE DOUG COPSEY | PHOTOGRAPHY TREASURE VALLEY IMAGE

hen Joey Hayden Mazarelli decided to remodel the kitchen in his modest, 1950s brick home on the bluff overlooking Protest Avenue in Boise, just off

Federal Way, he first consulted one of the big design houses in town. They told him he would have to triple his $30,000 budget to do what he wanted, so he started looking for other avenues and came across a brochure for JDI Custom Remodeling. In business since 2001, the company began as JDI Custom Carpentry, but by 2006 they were starting to focus more on complete remodels, so owner Justin Wild-

man decided to update the company name a bit. They moved into their current location at Fairview and Milwaukee a little over four years ago. Joey did his homework, and liked what he saw, so he gave Justin a call, figuring the sticker shock couldn’t be any worse. “After we did an initial consultation I told him that the big design house was right about one thing,” says Justin. “But $30,000 was not going to cut it for this project. He was more in the $60,000 range.” It was still a case of sticker shock, but Joey was impressed with JDI’s open book system, which shows clients the actual costs for the project, as well as JDI’s markup, and their management and administrative fees. Justin also told him they could make changes as they went along if necessary. Joey took the plunge, and with a contract for just over $63,000 in place, the JDI team went to work in October 2014. “The original kitchen was really compartmentalized, and clear off to one side of the house,” Justin explains. “You had these two big living and dining areas, and then there was this little, 30-inch doorway that led into the kitchen, so whoever was in there was completely isolated from the rest of the house.” There was a big fireplace in the partition wall separating the kitchen from the living and dining areas. Once that was knocked out, along with the brick chimney, Justin put trusses in place over the kitchen, allowing them to vault the ceiling up. Everything was going smoothly; cabinets and appliances were chosen, floors were in, and the project was on schedule for Joey’s hoped for Christmas 24

completion. Then, with the granite set to be installed the second week of December, they hit one of those unforeseen bumps in the road. Four guys on the installer’s crew came down with the flu, all in that same week, and everything ground to a halt. “The demand in this valley is vertical right now,” Justin says. “All it takes is one guy getting behind and all of a sudden everybody’s behind.” They discussed going with another fabricator, but that would take time to set up, and the change could bring other problems with it. Justin advised it would be smarter just to wait it out, and Joey reluctantly agreed. “It was disappointing for the client,” says Justin. "But we did our best to keep managing the project. Eventually, we pushed through and got it all done by the end of January. In the end the client was extremely happy. Now you can see who’s in the kitchen from three-quarters of the way across the house. It’s a night and day transition.”
