Makers

FEBRUARY 2017 PUBLISHER

D

uring our monthly planning meeting (dubbed ‘Deadlines & Donuts’) we collectively had a million ideas for the theme, Arts & Culture. As much as we would love to feature so many of the talented artists, all using different mediums, we narrowed it down to a few makers for this month. They are creative forces that are unstoppable, and they invited us into their homes and studios to pick their brains (Say Hello To, pg. 56).

There’s also now art behind every street corner (literally), which is why we featured And Art Space, founded by the talented Leah Brenner, who is introducing local talent to businesses who want to beautify the urban landscape (Street Art, pg. 74). And as you know, art can’t be defined. Who says food is not art? What about music? We got a taste of the local food culture with prominent local chefs who shared their favorite eats around town (Where Chefs Eat, pg. 36). Even Yonder Mountain took time out of their busy schedule, due to their new album release, to sit down with us for a more personal look into the lives of two neighborhood band members (Front Range Roots, pg. 52).

Justin set his sights on a career in the culinary arts early on while working at La Chaumiere in his hometown of Pinewood Springs, Colorado. After attending the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, he honed his craft at the famous Flagstaff House in Boulder and the Mashomack Fish and Game Reserve in Duchess County, New York. He came back home once and for all to join the Big Red F family, first at Jax Fish House and then at Zolo Grill. As a Chef, Justin blends his decade plus of culinary experience into seasonal menus full of creative, flavorful Southwestern dishes. BLUES MUSIC VISIONARY OTIS TAYLOR REFLECTS ON THE AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE IN A TIMELY RELEASE ON THE TRANCE BLUES FESTIVAL LABEL, OUT FEBRUARY 17TH Following his 2015 psychedelic masterpiece Hey Joe Opus/Red Meat, the new album from visionary roots-music songwriter and bandleader Otis Taylor, Fantasizing About Being Black, is a stark and poetic lesson on the historical trauma of the African American experience, from the voyages of slave ships to the Mississippi Delta. Taylor simultaneously travels back in time while moving forward as a musical artist. Blending his unique songwriting and the compelling musical approach

Taylor’s Trance Blues Festival label — inspires with stories of the enduring human spirit, lyrics, tell a story of continuing struggle. Street date is February 17, 2017. The artist explains that his 15th album is about “the different levels of racism in the African American experience that are unfortunately still with us today. The history of African Americans is the history of America,” Taylor says. “After 15 albums, I’ve taken all of my thoughts about the history of racial injustice and created a musical interpretation for modern times. When I started recording in 2015, I had no idea the topics would become even more relevant,” Taylor says. Musically, Taylor produces a unique sound that draws on African American culture but is innovative in the instrumentation and arrangement. CONTINUED >

Artist Profile

WYETH SHAWN LAWTON TALMON SEE HOW YOUNG ARTIST WYETH SHAWN LAWTON TALMON LETS HIS IMAGINATION DRIVE HIS CREATIVE PROCESS. ARTICLE EMILY O'BRIEN | PHOTOGRAPHY KELSEY HUFFER 30

Boulder Lifestyle | February 2017

When it comes to art, you're never too old—or too young—to start. We sat down with a young creative mind to hear about his artistic process. Meet Wyeth Shawn Lawton Talmon. (He happens to be named after Andrew Wyeth, one of his mother's favorite artists.) HOW DID YOU START CREATING YOUR CHARACTERS?

I started creating my characters when I was in my art class at school. We had free time drawing. I started sketching the wolf first because wolves are one of my favorite animals. Then more creatures started to emerge from there like a cat, a panda, an owl, a penguin and a new creature called a Randler from the show GMM (Good Mythical Morning). The other characters come from some of my friends and my other favorite animals and activities like my love for skateboarding. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK?

My work is a culmination of my quirky, funny, whimsical personality and my love of quality and detailed characteristics of the subject matter I am drawing. HOW WOULD YOU SAY YOUR ARTISTIC PROCESS EVOLVED?

I started drawing when I was around four years old. Most of what I drew then were cars, trucks, and anything with wheels, basically boxes with wheels. As I grew up and learned more about art from my mom, grandmother, and school, art became more detailed, and I found that I truly loved drawing almost anything. My process usually involves being in a quiet space or listening to my favorite music. I like to sit at my desk or in a comfy chair to draw my inspirations. I use a Sketchbook and my iPad sometimes. Artist’s Palette

(CON TI N U ED)

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE AND USE OF COLOR?

My style comes from my imagination and my love of sketching with quality pencils and pens. My favorite drawing pencil is a Blackwing Pearl or Lamy Scribble. My style of drawing comes from my attention to detail whether it is on a vehicle or my animals characteristics. My use of color comes from my love of the colors gray and blue. I tend to use those colors first before adding in any other colors. WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS WHEN STARTING A NEW PROJECT?

I sketch my ideas out with pencil before I add any pen and ink. Once my sketch is where I want it to be, I add pen for the outline and a gray brush marker to fill in the spaces. WHERE DO YOU CURRENTLY DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION?

My interest in vintage and new cars, my quirky dog, woodland and sea animals, things I experience every day, and my friends and our favorite activities. I also gather inspiration from Instagram. I like to see what inspires others and their projects. ANY 2017 ARTISTIC GOALS?

One of my artistic goals at Manhattan Middle School is to finish my silk screen design for my T-shirt project. WyethTalmon.com

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL DATE NIGHT SPOT?

B

SISTER JILL: We unanimously agree our favorite date night spot is Amu by

the owner of Sushi Zanmai. They do country-style Japanese cuisine. It's fresh, unique, and all small plates, making it perfect for sharing and experimenting, leading to fun food conversations. They make a great saki-tini too! DO YOU HAVE A GO-TO DISH TO ORDER THERE? CHEF JESSICA: Their sake-marinated black cod literally melts in your

mouth. The lotus root stuffed with crab with sea salt for dipping is another favorite, and we always go for the daily specials. HOW ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL HOT SPOT? SISTER JILL: Bramble and Hare is fun because they make fabulous

cocktails and their kitchen is open late for us restaurant folk. They use beautiful ingredients from owners Eric and Jill Skokan's farm. There’s always an eclectic bunch hanging around, and it's an intimate setting, so a great place to strike up conversations. DO YOU HAVE FAVORITE ITEMS TO ORDER HERE TOO? a family man. Living in the mountains, I often choose to be at home cooking dinner for my wife and little boy. However, when date night is possible, I usually take my wife to Jax Fish House. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE DISH TO ORDER THERE? CHEF JUSTIN: We generally start with a dozen Kumamoto or Shigoku

oysters. Jax has always been on point with fresh fish and seafood, not only with quality, but they really nail flavor profiles as well. DO YOU HAVE OTHER FAVORITE LOCAL HOT SPOTS? CHEF JUSTIN: When we go out as a family, we go to West End Tavern.

We love the burnt ends, and you can never have enough W.E.T. Frisbees, which the kid’s meals are served on every time!

BRADFORD HEAP, OWNER AND CULINARY DIRECTOR FOR WILD STANDARD, SALT, AND COLTERRA FOOD AND WINE

For Bradford Heap, owner and culinary director for Wild Standard, Salt, and Colterra Food and Wine, a great dining experience is about both the flavor and quality of the food as well as how it came to be on your plate.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE BOULDER FOOD SCENE? BRADFORD: Boulder’s culture has constantly been progressive and

embraced restaurants that make a statement around sourcing, the providence of food, and supporting local farmers and ranchers. That’s very important for all of us, and I feel thankful to be supported by the Boulder community in my efforts to make these goals a reality. WHAT ARE TWO OF YOUR TOP FAVORITE DATE NIGHT SPOTS TO EAT AT AROUND TOWN? BRADFORD: Whenever I have time for a date night, I always like to

go to Blackbelly or Black Cat. I like the way they both source their food, and their philosophies align with mine. At Blackbelly specifically, they’re doing an incredible job with their meat program. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR TO GO TO THESE RESTAURANTS? BRADFORD: I like to dine at either of these restaurants during any

season. They’re like my children, and I love them all! Each one comes with amazing ingredients and preparations of food that are wonderful and suiting. Listening to seasonality brings me so much excitement.

R

iver & Woods restaurant, the relatively new occupant of the iconic John’s cottage on East Pearl, should come with a warning:

you will not want to leave. Not that this is a bad thing, but this is a neighborhood eatery that does just about everything right – the food, the drinks, the service, and the cozy atmosphere that John’s Restaurant nurtured over their 40-year tenure. To be honest, I thought that the ghost of John’s – such a longtime Boulder favorite – would prove too much for the building’s next resident to overcome, but R&W doesn’t so much overcome that legacy as pick off where John’s left off. This makes sense given that R&W was hand-chosen by the Bizzarro family to be their successors. They were set on an independent, family-owned restaurant taking over the space. The Bizzarro kids grew up in that kitchen, and now the children of owners Kate and Josh Dinar and chef Daniel Asher (formerly of Root Down and Linger) will do the same. Keeping with that family theme, R&W’s prices are accessible: entrees top out at $28, but the majority of plates are in the $13-$16 range. Cocktails are $9, and single-digit glasses of wine are plentiful. “We wanted a neighborhood restaurant worthy of a destination,” Josh says about keeping prices reasonable and quality high. Asher has been a longtime favorite on the Denver restaurant scene, and now Boulder residents get to see why. His menu is dubbed as Colorado comfort cuisine, or refined takes on American classics. His Montreal Duck Wings ($14) are a meatier, more garlicky version of traditional hot wings, while Aunt Penny’s Mac & Cheese ($14) coats orecchiette pasta and Hazel Dell mushrooms with cult favorite Cougar Gold cheddar. (And the Boulder jalapeño and cheddar potato chip crunch on top is kind of genius.) A note on that mac – it’s a community inspired recipe, which means that it came from a restaurant guest and was then polished by Asher. R&W invites diners to donate their favorite family recipes and winners make it onto the menu (or appear as specials). Other favorites include the “In the Moment” Caprese Salad ($14) thanks to its amazing hand-pulled-to-order mozzarella and – shhh – the short rib-topped Poutine off the ‘secret’ menu. The salty/spicy/creamy flavors of the poutine definitely warrant permanent menu status, but until it makes its way into print, be sure to beg your server for some. The cocktail menu reads very floral and fruity, with hibiscus featured in the tap cocktail Watership Down, elderflower liqueur in the Debonair, and cherry bitters in the Sloe Hare. They’re well-balanced and generous with the liquor for the price tag. By now you’re probably stuffed, but as I mentioned earlier, you just don’t want to leave quite yet. So, of course, you’re going to order dessert, and you should probably make it the Tableside S’mores ($8). Not only is it fun to roast your own ginormous vanilla bean marshmallow, but the house-made cinnamon black pepper graham crackers are good enough to eat on their own. At some point you will either completely exhaust the menu – secret and otherwise – or, more likely, you won’t have any more room in your stomach for Asher’s awesome food. When this occurs, you’re going to have to go home. But don’t worry, like John’s before it, we think River & Woods will stick around for many return trips.

in. Maybe it was a perpetually cozy igloo, a sand castle where the waves never breached the walls, or perhaps a super-secret fort (made out of only the finest, softest of throw pillows and blankets, of course). Boulderbased Rodwin Architecture recently took one such fantastical idea and, through innovative design and sustainability-driven creativity, rooted it in reality in the Boulder residential home they call the “Treehouse.” Firm believers in transparent and exceptionally high-quality service for their clients, Rodwin Architecture is unique in the fully integrated, architect-led design/build process to which it adheres. “Over the last 18 years, we’ve found that the design/build process delivers tremendous value to our clients,” says Scott Rodwin, AIA, LEED AP, Principal at Rodwin Architecture. “These clients presented us with a very challenging site, and their first question was, ‘Is it buildable?’ The ability to bring a construction perspective into the conceptual design solution was essential.” With an additional focus on the incorporation of meaningful sustainability into the design, Rodwin Architecture and their building arm, Skycastle Construction, worked together to find a creative solution to keep the design cost-effective while maintaining a high level of quality and craftsmanship.

According to Rodwin, the conceptual design of Treehouse was determined and driven by the steep geography of the property. This mountainous landscape led to themes of ascension and openness in the home. Greeting you at the main entrance on the base level, the home features a sculptural hickory staircase that graciously takes you up and into the bright, spacious Great Room, capitalizing on the breathtaking views and natural light. The home gives the feeling of floating above the terrain, a feature enhanced when enjoying a balmy summer night on the expansive front deck. “Every part of the house contains an amazing architectural moment,” says Brandon David, Vice President of Design/Build at Rodwin & Skycastle. With an overall warm modern feel, the home is livable, practical, and precisely customized to fit the owners’ taste and lifestyle. From the details of the rich, natural materials including granite, wood, stucco, and stone, to the airiness of the open floor plan, the home is clean, contemporary, and stunning, while also blending seamlessly with its natural surroundings. According to the homeowners, their personal Treehouse home makes them feel like they’re on vacation every day. Through the quality of workmanship, ingenuity, and spectacular design, Rodwin Architecture has, with the Treehouse project, created a quintessentially modern mountain home to envy. BRIAN FOUHY CREATOR, ART DIRECTOR AND AUTHOR OF COLLECTING WORDS — VERY (SHORT) VISUAL (STORIES)

BRIANFOUHY.COM | COLLECTINGWORDS.COM/BOOK | @FOUHY

While in grad school five years ago at Boulder Digital Works, Brian Fouhy joined Instagram, a visually creative online platform, and began following different people he found inspiring. One of which was @josecabaco who photographs a lot of words, which influenced me to begin noticing the words that are all around us and #collectingwords was born,” says Fouhy. Fouhy began capturing photographs of those words he came across as he wandered through life, on street signs, graffitied walls, etc. “I had amassed a fairly large collection of words and had always had this thought for a book in the back of my mind. However rather than just feature the words individually, I had the thought to arrange what I had found into stories, in a refrigerator magnet style, where the words in the images came together to tell a bigger story and also allow the images and words to be interpreted in new ways. In all, there are 43 original visual short stories, some fun, some romantic, ultimately showcasing how poetic the world around us can be,” explains Fouhy. He adds that his strongest source of inspiration often comes from just drifting through streets. “Some of the best words I have found, I have found by not trying to find them but by wandering and being aware of what surrounds me.”

62

Boulder Lifestyle | February 2017

“I like to think my work is personal, not only for me but of whoever views it. I feel like anyone can look at one of my photos and relate it back to their own life and a memory they have that the word or photo evokes.”

AT YOUR SERVICE (CON TI N U ED)

FRASCA IS HANDS-DOWN ONE OF THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN COLORADO, but when people sing its praises, the food isn’t usually the first thing they mention. It’s the hospitality. (Although the food isn’t so shabby itself…) Clearly, we’re starving for an eatery that makes us feel welcome and cared for, and when Frasca opened its doors in 2004, it set the bar so high for hospitality that none of the slew of new restaurants that have opened in the decade-plus since has reached it. The man behind the curtain at Frasca isn’t behind the curtain at all – he’s Bobby Stuckey, and he’s right there, front and center on the floor just about every night. He’s the reason that Frasca is so often mentioned in the same sentence as Thomas Keller’s The French Laundry and Danny Meyer’s Gramercy Tavern, two of the best for hospitality. “Great hospitality is built on trust, and that begins with all guests feeling like they’ve entered your own home,” Stuckey says. “Service is something you do to someone; hospitality is how you make them feel. There’s been such a wonderful explosion of restaurants, but sometimes there are not enough senior members who can teach both the fundamentals of service and the empathy of hospitality to the newer staff.” A master sommelier (in 2013 Frasca won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Wine Service and in 2015 Wine Enthusiast named Stuckey the best sommelier in the country), he works the dining room nightly, sharing his enthusiasm – and knowledge – with his diners. The food is most certainly first rate, but it’s Stuckey that many of the regulars keep coming back for. Stuckey got his first taste of the restaurant business back in 1985 when he bussed tables at Demitra’s Kitchen in Tucson, Arizona. Eventually, he made his way west to The French Laundry, where he worked under the famed Keller and met his eventual business partner, chef Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson. Keller is known for his strong emphasis on service and hospitality, and Stuckey says that the greatest lesson he took from his years with Keller was the mantra, ‘Treat it as your own, and one day it will be.’ 68

He took that advice to heart and made his own with the opening of Frasca. “I was going to spend the rest of my career with Thomas Keller or do my own project,” Stuckey says. “Each choice would have been great, but I’ve very much enjoyed having my own restaurant.” They chose Boulder because it’s close to his wife’s father and family, not to mention it’s a pretty stellar place to live. This spring, the Frasca family will grow with the addition of Tavernetta by Frasca, which will serve Italian classics in the new Union Station development. Stuckey has already tapped a French Laundry alum to lead the front of house, so we know the hospitality will be just as outstanding. As for Stuckey’s role at Tavernetta, it’s exactly as we’d expect: “Bussing tables and helping educate the staff on hospitality.” 70

Street Art And Art Space: Beautifying Boulder’s urban landscape, one mural at a time.

N

owadays, it’s common to see murals dotting buildings, storefronts and

underpasses throughout city centers and small towns. “The sentiment that murals are vandalism or not real art is becoming all but non-existent. The legitimacy of the work speaks for itself,” explains Leah Brenner, the Boulder-based founder of And Art Space, an organization connecting local artists with Denver and Boulder-area companies and spaces looking to incorporate mural artwork into their aesthetic. Art has always driven Brenner. She’s kept an art blog, runs a Denver gallery and she started Boulder’s first rotating mural wall in Boulder at madelife. “That’s when I realized that this was something that needed a much bigger canvas than just one wall in Boulder,” explains Brenner. Thus, And Art Space was born. “Experiencing

CALL OF THE WILD ARTICLE DANA LAPINEL PHOTOGRAPHY MICHAEL RAINERO

86

Boulder Lifestyle | February 2017

M

y ideas about dog sledding came from Jack London’s famous novels Call of the Wild and White Fang; Disney

also threw in a bone with their not-so-famous 2006 movie Eight Below. All in all, it seemed like an amazing experience. So when we had the assignment to do a dog sledding feature, I was all in. The primary motivation behind this dog sledding feature was pure curiosity. As I sat looking at my two dogs (a pug and wannabe pug that’s a lab), I was interested to see a dog at work. I typically get pulled by my dogs on leashes, but for pulling to be a dog’s actual duty was fascinating. Alpine Adventures Dog Sledding, known for their unique,

hands-on dog sledding tours, caught my attention because of the rave reviews and long reputation, a total of fifteen seasons. I sent an email, owner Loren Priem confirmed, and we were off to the races. As photographer Michael Rainero and I took off Sunday morning on 1-70 West, dressed in ski clothing and plenty of wool, I envisioned playing with big, fluffy Siberian Huskies. A few hours later (thanks, mountain traffic) we finally made it and were in for a surprise. After meeting Dana, our guide and the alpha of her 12-dog team, we walked over for the rest of the introductions. What first caught my attention were all the colors, shapes and sizes of the dogs. Although purebred Siberian Huskies can be used in dog sledding, Alaskan Huskies, we learned, dominate in both racing and touring. “Alaskans are a crossbreed created and bred for long-distance running. Siberians are a pure breed, but could never run the miles that Alaskans do. So you see them bred with running breeds,” says Loren. And during this peak season, there’s a lot of running. “Only during the very busiest time of our peak holiday season does a team run four tours a day. In theory, a team could run a total of 22 miles in a full day,” says Loren. “But that is broken up over four tours throughout the entire day. A 5-6 mile run for these athletes is barely stretching their legs.” CONTINUED >

Dana’s team would be on their second tour of the day with us in tow. Becca (2) and Scout (4) were the leading ladies and the smallest out of the team. “We have the muscle in the back, speed and intelligence in front,” explained Dana. We opted for the one-hour "tagsled" tour in which two dog sleds are attached, and the guide takes the first sled to help guide. Both Michael and I got the opportunity to help drive, ride and control the team. I started out as the driver and let out an enthusiastic “mush,” and the packs pent-up excitement was let out in one cooperative pull. The ride was serene and the perfect way to spend a Sunday. There was an impending snowstorm set to hit the following day, so the view of typically blue skies and Mt. Elbert (the tallest 14-er in Colorado) was blocked. We didn’t mind since it felt like a true tundra, alpine adventure. When we got back, we helped bring each dog back to his or her station, and then it was feeding time. As soon as they were done eating, you could see through their soft grunts, barks and occasional howls their excitement to get back to the ride. We saw families with children of all ages, couples old and young, and groups of friends. Most of Alpine’s business comes from out-of-staters visiting the slopes looking for a unique snow experience outside of skiing. “Everyone knows about snowmobiling, which I love to do as well, but dog sledding is one of those bucket-list activities for tourists,” says Loren. “We hear it every day, all day long, that we are the highlight of everyone’s winter vacation, and we take pride in that.” I may not be a tourist, but it was the highlight of my winter and a definite conversation starter. If you’re near Breck, Vail, Copper Mountain or Keystone, visit Alpine to cross 'dog sledding' off your bucket list.
