• a backyard (for our two dogs) • lots of natural lighting (we previously lived in a Denver dungeon) • two bedrooms (we love friends and family visiting) • a social kitchen (it's where we hang out the most) We thought the pre-home process was complicated: Two years cautiously watching our credit and saving, finding a loan, going to hundreds of open houses, contracts getting rejected, and all of the stress, hiccups and tears that go along with the home buying process. After finally finding our dream home, we signed the papers and received the keys to an empty house. Months later, it's still mostly empty rooms. That's the part we didn't take into consideration. Decorating and how hard (and expensive) it is! The first time homebuyer saga continues as we struggle to fill bare walls and spaces throughout our abode. There's a dire need for interior designers in this world. Regardless of the million pinned ideas on Pinterest, it won't be the same as a pro walking throughout the space and turning concepts into reality. Fortunately, after this issue, I met Emily Tucker Design, Inc. A Boulder interior stylist who let us snoop around her beautiful home for home inspiration (*hint: it's all about style & durability), and it's best to mix thrift store finds with sentimental hand-medowns and even new, modern picks. We also got a design history lesson from Denver-based interior stylist, Anna Smith, who shared a formal introduction to Eero Saarinen's Tulip Tables & Chairs. Perfect timing with spring's imminent arrival. Speaking of spring, we couldn't let Pantone's spring 2017 line of colors slip through the cracks without a curated feature. Thanks to Nancy Gandrud with A Bit Lovely, Hannah Howard with Ink + Root and talented photographer Kylie Fitts, we collected interior design and fashion items that fall within these color trends. The number one color for 2017 being Greenery, a perfect match for a month like March. Good luck with making your house a happy home and spring cleaning!

The efficiency is intended to reflect the school's commitment to the environment, CBW says. The project’s difficult circumstances, however, was CBW’s greatest challenge. Not only were they working to deliver a project that was done in an extremely short period of time, with 15 weeks of design and prefabrication and just four weeks of on-site construction, they were met with a remote location that required all materials to be small enough to put in the back of a pick-up truck and light enough to be carried. Sommerfeld recalls that on the last day, the senior guide, who got to pick which cabin he was going to live in, turned to the students and said, “No matter which cabin I pick, it will be the nicest place I’ve ever lived in my life.” He added, “I think that was a proud moment because they realized how much the client appreciated what they’d done and how much their hard work had paid off. It was an honor to know we did right by them.”

mily Tucker starts her day with a fresh cup of coffee, in the comfort of her home, where she has cherry-picked each item filling her space to fit her aesthetic. Surrounded by items that meet her specifications, everything is easy to clean and would stand the test of time, in style as well as durability. Less practical things have simply struck her as beautiful, and whether they’re child-friendly or not, if she loves the way it looks, it makes the cut. She describes her personal style as modern with a traditional twist, including a touch of humor, always keeping comfort in mind. “I love a modern sofa, with a vintage rug,” says Tucker. “Or mixing a beautiful, important photograph with a five dollar painting you get at a flea market.” Tucker’s husband has never objected to anything she has chosen to design their home’s interior spaces, and she considers him a saint for it. When it comes to her 9-month-old Jack, she’s reassured that he can’t yet talk, and has therefore decided to pretend that he loves everything she’s selected. Although when his mom was a teenager, Tucker wasn’t quite so silent about her own mother’s design choices, which lead her to feel the calling for her future career.

“Not my proudest moment, but when I was about 14, my mom redid the curtains in my room and didn’t tell me,” says Tucker. “I came home to curtains that were the same color as the walls, and I threw a fit! Like a hysterical tantrum because I was so disturbed by those curtains.” Now running her own business Emily Tucker Design, Inc., Tucker gets to call the shots, at least as much as she can while blending her personal and professional lives while running a business from her home. With her morning coffee, she tackles feeding Jack and the dog, as well as answering emails. Tucker may spend a chunk of the day ordering fabrics, writing orders for custom pieces, finding vintage lighting, pulling samples from stone and tile stores or for curtain fabrics. By 4:30 she’s hoping to wrap up the work day by cleaning up her desk and preparing for the next day before returning to mom-mode.

in the middle of a cold winter. They are comforting, filling, warm, and depending on how you serve them, they are relatively healthy. Colorado Lamb is considered the best lamb in the world. In that vein, we suggest serving this delicious entree when the nights are long, and the temperature is low. 82

Below is my recipe for braised lamb shank. It can be served many ways, with a vast array of side dishes, or just on its own with some nice crusty bread. I often serve with white beans, fennel, and tomato or over a roasted vegetable risotto. Other popular accompaniments include soft polenta, mashed potatoes, or rice. They all taste great! BRAISED LAMB SHANKS

(serves 4) • 4 fresh lamb shanks (1 - 1.5 lb each) • kosher salt and fresh cracked black pepper • 1/2 Cup canola oil • 4 large carrots, peeled and chopped • 1 large yellow onion, peeled and chopped • 4 stalks celery, chopped • 1 head garlic, cloves peeled • 1 Tbsp whole black peppercorns • 2 Tbsp tomato paste • 2 Qts red wine • 4 Qts meat stock (lamb is ideal, but chicken or beef works fine) • 2oz Fresh Thyme • 2oz Fresh Rosemary • 4 bay leaves 1. Pat dry lamb shanks and season all sides very liberally with salt and pepper. 2. In wide bottomed pot, heat canola oil over high heat. Place shanks in the pot and sear each side until browned - about 2 minutes per side. Remove from pan and set on resting plate. 3. Add carrots, onion, and celery to pan and continue to cook on high heat. Stir every few minutes to ensure even browning of vegetables. This takes about 10 minutes. 4. Add garlic, peppercorns, and tomato paste and cook on high heat for one minute, stirring constantly. 5. Add 1 cup red wine and stir. Allow red wine to reduce until almost dry. Repeat with 1 cup of wine at a time, allowing the liquid to reduce to a thick paste before adding more until all red wine has been used up. Using a whisk, stir often to remove any dark, stuck bits from the bottom of the pot. This step develops the deep flavor of the sauce. 6. Once all the red wine has been incorporated, add the stock and bring to a boil. Place the shanks back in the pot and turn down to a simmer. The liquid should just cover the meat. If the pot is too big or small to cover the lamb, transfer all ingredients to a baking pan or casserole dish, so it fits perfectly. 7. Add the thyme, rosemary, bay leaves, and a generous sprinkle of salt. March 2017 | Boulder Lifestyle

n honor of Spring’s imminent arrival, this week’s icon of design is…Eero Saarinen’s Tulip tables and chairs! Crazy name, crazy furniture. This guy is a little confusing, as his daddy-o, Eliel

Saarinen was also a famous designer and director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where Saarinen eventually taught as well (I know you must be getting sick of hearing about that place, but I swear–it’s a good name to know!). But I do know you’ve seen his tulip tables, and you probably recognize his chairs as well! So, what’s the story behind these Mod pedestal pieces? Saarinen was born and raised in Finland and emigrated to America with his parents when he was just 13. After studying sculpture as a young man in Paris, he trained as an architect at Yale. Fun fact alert: Saarinen’s buildings and monuments are all around us! Not only did he design the St. Louis Golden Arch, but the TWA terminal at JFK and Dulles International Airport.

Saarinen is credited, along with Eames (and Bertoia–the poor guy always seems to get neglected) with launching and popularizing organic sculptural furniture forms. The Anna Smith, interior stylist Annabode + Co. AnnaBode.com @annabode

tulip chair and tables, first released by Knoll in 1958 just three years before his untimely death from a brain tumor, are easily his most famous design. Said to have been inspired by a street sign, they were formed from an aluminum base and fiberglass shell. Although Saarinen wanted the pieces to be manufactured from a single material, plastic hadn’t yet been developed in 1958 that was strong enough for the design. Plastics had become incredibly popular in furniture design of the 1960s, serving as an antidote to the hard, cold surfaces of Bauhaus modernism. Rather obviously, plastic also lent itself much more easily to organic sculptural forms than, say, tubular steel. And it was cheap. Win, win. Saarinen liked to say that his tulip tables and chairs cleaned up “the slum of legs” that supported basically all tables and chairs. I’d have to say I agree with him–his tulip tables are lovely in their simplicity and clean lines, don’t you think?

The Chicken Coop

Every chicken coop is comprised of two main compo-

nents: an enclosed space used for sleeping and laying eggs, and the “chicken run,” an open air space so the chickens can spend time outside during the day. The enclosed space should be elevated at least a couple of feet above the run to allow for droppings to collect under the shelter. As far as the size of both of these components, the general rule is to allow 2-3 square feet per chicken inside the coop, and 4-5 square feet per chicken in the run. Like people, chickens don’t usually enjoy being out in the Colorado sun in the heat of a summer’s day! Locating your coop near the shade of a tree is the best option - it allows the birds to stay cool in the summer and, in the winter once the leaves are gone, the hens can stay in the sun all day. If you don’t have access to a shady tree, add a layer of shade cloth to the chicken wire on the top of the run. 90

e had the pleasure of talking to Jack TerHar of SillTerHar Motors about wine. TerHar has been collect-

ing wine for about 40 years. With four separate wine cellars in his collection (in addition to owning Vail Fine Wines in downtown Vail!), we figured TerHar would be the perfect person to talk to about different wine storage options for those just starting out. There are three main factors that need to be considered when storing wine: • light • humidity • temperature

Wine ages best when unexposed to sunlight as UV rays can adversely affect the composition of wines. Many wine bottles are tinted green to help protect the wine, but storing wine in a place where sunlight is not a factor helps to ensure that the wine will not be impacted by the unwanted sun. HUMIDITY

Humidity is also essential in wine storage, mainly because the corks will eventually crack if stored in too dry of an environment. A cracked cork exposes the wine to the atmosphere, allowing the wine to oxidize and spoil. TEMPERATURE

The last and arguably the most important factor to keep in mind with wine storage is temperature. According to TerHar, wine should be stored somewhere between 48 and 62 degrees Fahrenheit. The cooler the wine is kept, the longer it will take to develop and age. Not all wine is meant to be aged, so if you are just starting a collection, it’s best to find a store to buy from with educated staff who can tell you how to best store your wine. So now that we’ve covered the basics… what next? There are many different elements to consider when crafting a cellar, but TerHar says to remember that it all boils down to one equation: The Amount of Money Spent = Showiness + Capacity. Once you’ve figured out how much money you have to spend and have decided whether aesthetic appeal or storage capacity is most important, you can begin planning. Wine Cellar Innovations and Wine Enthusiast are two companies that sell pre-made cellars and cooling systems, but even if you are planning to do everything yourself browsing these websites is a great place to begin accumulating ideas. If aesthetics are the priority, Wine Enthusiast offers some gorgeous “furniture” cellars that are all ready to be installed. The main advantage of building something yourself is that it can be much less expensive. TerHar says that a recent trend has been to build cellars in the dead space under staircases and that one could build an under-the-staircase cellar that holds up to 450 bottles of wine for under $4000. With so many variables to consider, the idea of crafting a wine cellar can seem daunting. Like everything, though, the key is to start small. Collect wine within your budget, start with a small cellar, and remember that the less fancy something looks, the less expensive it will be. Enjoy!
