their gifts that they were born with to give away. The craft these women pursue daily, and the work they produce plays a tremendous part in their livelihood. So for our women's photo shoot this year, we wanted to capture the true essence of each individual naturally in Downtown Boulder. In these pages, you will hear from world-renowned Pilates instructor Pat Guyton and the legacy she has on our city, your bucket list music festivals, the insider on where to stay and what to do when you spend a weekend in Nashville, and more... Cheers to all of the courageous women in our lives, may we continue to walk forward in strength and dignity, and know that with grace, anything is possible.

RIO REOPENS COMPLETELY RENOVATED BOULDER LOCATION Colorado’s beloved Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant announces the reopening of its Boulder restaurant at 1101 Walnut Street in early April, after a complete renovation that took four months. During the process, the Rio served its Boulder guests from a temporary location at 1701 Pearl Street. COLORADO AUTHOR, WIFE AND MOTHER OF THREE, JOJO WATTS, ANSWERS OUR QUESTIONS ABOUT HER CREATIVE JOURNEY AND LIFE AS A WRITER. BOULDER LIFESTYLE: YOU ATTENDED THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF DRAMATIC ARTS IN NEW YORK CITY. WHAT WERE SOME STEPS THAT LEAD TO THIS ACCOMPLISHMENT? JOJO WATTS: My experiences as a high school drama student and Thespian member sharpened my skills and qualified me for an audition to attend the Academy. Then during my senior high school trip to New York City, I realized my dream to move to NYC to pursue a creative and artistic career. However, long before receiving my bachelor's degree from The New School for Social Research and attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, my grandmother was a huge influence in my life, constantly instilling in me to follow my dreams… I always remembered that. BL: YOUR NOVEL, IMAGINE THAT, TELLS THE STORY OF A YOUNG WOMAN’S JOURNEY OF SELF-DISCOVERY AFTER SHE MOVES TO NEW YORK CITY WITH THE DREAM OF BECOMING AN ACTRESS. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO WRITE THIS STORY AS A NOVEL RATHER THAN A MEMOIR? JW: I’d been wanting to write this story for quite some time, and the moment I decided to write Imagine That I knew I wanted to tell the story with honesty and truth. By doing so, I wanted to give the characters anonymity, which is why it is a novel and not a memoir. BL: WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU LOVE ABOUT LIVING IN COLORADO? JW: Moving to Colorado was a lifestyle change for our family. We didn't know what to expect, but the move unified our family and grounded us away from the hustle and bustle of the East Coast. There are so many amazing things I love about Colorado. Besides the weather, I love the healthy lifestyle that many of us are striving to achieve. Whether it's making healthy choices about food; getting outside to enjoy the many trails, skiing, and hiking; or just a simple walk in nature—not many states have that.

At its Core HOW PAT GUYTON BRINGS SCIENCE AND SUBTLETY INTO THE PILATES STUDIO
ARTICLE LISA VAN HORNE PHOTOGRAPHY POPPY & CO.
WORLD-RENOWNED PILATES INSTRUCTOR PAT GUYTON HAS BEEN BRINGING A DEEP EXPLORATION INTO PILATES—WITH AN EMPHASIS ON FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT—TO HER INSTRUCTION AND PRACTICE FOR DECADES. She opened Boulder’s first Pilates studio in 1986 and, along with business partner and fellow instructor Heather Carey, today Pat continues to foster Boulder’s vibrant Pilates community through a style that is empathetic, rejuvenating and enriching down to its most elemental level. LISA: WHAT HAS YOUR PERSONAL JOURNEY WITH PILATES BEEN? PAT: I’ve always been active and moving. I’ve also always been interested in science, and Pilates captured my attention because I found it to be a comprehensive education in movement that is beneficial for all people. For many years I worked with injured patients at an osteopathic clinic in a small studio and, throughout this time, I continued to study with multiple students of Joe Pilates, the practice’s founder. I opened our current studio in 2015. HEATHER: I’d given up on participating in team sports because of persistent knee injuries during my youth soccer career. I began practicing Pilates to rehabilitate my body and found it helpful in many ways. I had never felt a deep connection within my body until doing Pilates. I became committed to digging deeper into Pilates and was referred to Pat, who I insistently trained with until she agreed to mentor me!

LISA: WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT TEACHING PILATES IN BOULDER SPECIFICALLY? PAT: When Pilates was introduced here, everyone practiced it because it was new. But once they experienced it they understood it wasn’t just a fun fitness fad—it’s a solid foundation for life. Pilates is for everybody, and I have clients who have been practicing here in Boulder for over 25 years. LISA: WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS OF PRACTICING PILATES? HEATHER: Flexibility, strength, balance, mobility and articulation of the spine with concentration and awareness. These are things I didn’t realize I didn’t know and couldn’t apply before practicing Pilates with Pat. PAT: Pilates results in better organization of the bones, muscles and organs, and is a tool for attaining a body that can reach a higher level of achievement. Pilates movement can be educative, rehabilitative and increase athletic performance. LISA: WHAT DO YOU FOCUS ON IN YOUR PILATES INSTRUCTION? HEATHER: Joe Pilates used to say, “You’re only as young as your spine is flexible!” That’s the mantra at our studio. We include all ranges of motion in our sessions and focus on cues that are anatomically equivalent to foster CONTINUED >

Music Spotlight: Maestro Devin Patrick Hughes THE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. Classical instruments. Mozart. Beethoven. Haydn. These are things we are familiar with but may not have any personal contact with. During the past ten years, the Boulder Symphony, led by Devin Patrick Hughes, has been breaking boundaries between the general public and classical music. Focusing on community outreach, the Boulder Symphony allows those that are unfamiliar with classical music and those that may have been apprehensive about attending the symphony a chance to reconnect with the music and experience it for themselves. Linking up with modern and local composers while still honoring the classics, Maestro Hughes brings the symphony orchestra to all residents of Boulder. Here’s a bit about the conductor directing this movement forward. BOULDER LIFESTYLE: WHAT HAS YOUR JOURNEY TO BECOME A CONDUCTOR LOOKED LIKE? DEVIN PATRICK HUGHES: I went to Grinnell College, I wanted to be a doctor. I was a music and pre-med double major. In college, I discovered the music of Brahms and Rachmaninoff and decided I wanted to be a conductor. Having had enough of organic chemistry I studied violin, piano, and I was able to get into composition and counterpoint as well. I continued to study music history and music theory, and, of course, conducting. I put together an orchestra, and we played Beethoven Symphony 7. I would imagine Beethoven would have some things to say about my first performance (laughs). From there, I was bitten by the conducting bug, and it became a lifelong dream and passion of mine. BL: DO YOU GET TO COLLABORATE WITH ANY COLORADO COMPOSERS? DPH: The Boulder Symphony works with a lot of living composers. That’s been one of our raisons d'être from the beginning, about 10 years ago. Composers from Colorado that come to mind include whom we’ve worked with: Daniel Kellogg, Gregory T.S. Walker, Austin Wintory and Conrad Kehn among others. BL: TELL ME WHY THE BOULDER SYMPHONY HAS THE NICKNAME “BAD NEWS BEARS”? DPH: This is news to me! Like the Bad News Bears, I think all of us at the Boulder Symphony are risk takers! We push limits of what an orchestra can or should be. CONTINUED >

For Jimena Peck, photography allows her to connect with real people and share their stories. Originally from Argentina, she and her husband moved here four years ago from Amsterdam, with the requirement that their new home has “sun + mountains.” Growing up in a developing country exposed Jimena to diverse environments, instilling a sense of empathy that

influences her work and her passion for shooting food, as well as makers, doers, travelers, cooks, farmers and anything that moves. “The camera allows me to connect with people of all ages, colors, shapes and beliefs,” Jimena explains. “It lets us be our own storytellers without words.” She knows there is not one path to success as an entrepreneur, but there’s a value to committing to what you are and to continually be on the move. “This is a great time in history where women must be authentic, get engaged and show the world how we see things without forgetting about the ones who are still not being heard,” she says.

and of itself. Yet this year marks the 46th Annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival, a gathering of artists and music lovers steeped in history, tradition and progressive musical talent unique to the bluegrass scene. With a line-up that blends Grammy-winning talent, local legends and up-and-coming artists, this year’s festival promises to be a celebratory homage to all its most inimitable elements. From returning artists on the Telluride House Band who have thrilled festival-goers for decades to younger generations of acoustic musicians already making a name for themselves as bluegrass legends, this is a cornerstone festival that’s not to be missed.

STURTZ & COPELAND CELEBRATES 90 YEARS IN BLOOM
Rhoda Hubbard built five greenhouses alongside the quiet dirt avenue of Arapahoe Road and opened Fawcett Floral. In August of 1928, Lloyd and Gladys Sturtz bought out the Hubbards, and Sturtz & Copeland officially entered its name into Boulder’s history in 1929, when Gladys’ father, Albert W. Copeland, joined his daughter and son-in-law in business. Fast forward 90 years and Sturtz & Copeland has become a trusted fixture of the Boulder Valley, beautifying our homes and gardens with a stunning selection of annuals and perennials, professional floral arrangements, and a year-round greenhouse filled with indoor plants. Since its start on 1500 Arapahoe Road, Sturtz & Copeland has grown dramatically, making a move to Valmont Road in 1981 under the then new ownership of Carol Riggs, who bought the business in 1976 after having worked at the greenhouse since the late 1960s. In the years since, the shop has flourished under Riggs’ green thumb, thanks in part to General Manager Connie Smith and her team, who personally visit local brokers to hand-select houseplants, outdoor plants and fresh-cut flowers—piecing together a wide variety of traditional, exotic and trending plants. That’s not to say the road to Sturtz & Copeland’s continued success has been without obstacles: this generation’s obsession with instant gratification led the greenhouse to begin stocking different types of plants, including more mature plants and quick-blooming flowers, as opposed to the fall-to-spring bulbs-think daffodils or tulips-it used to sell by the thousands. Perhaps the big-

internet boom, and the introduction of online orders. This new realm of business forced Sturtz & Copeland to adapt and change the way it had done business for years, but it the onslaught of competition from big-box stores and grocery stores selling fresh-cut flowers and plants. As Smith relates, each new challenge has simply motivated Sturtz & Copeland to work ever harder to maintain the stellar reputation it has built in the community. And maintain it has. As Boulder has grown, changed and flourished over the decades, Sturtz & Copeland has remained a steadfast staple of its landscape; a shining example of just how much hard work, customer loyalty and an unwavering dedication to excellence can achieve.
