Growing up as a Boulder native, I sometimes forget how exceptional this town is. But when I work with people to buy and sell their homes, I’m reminded how blessed I am to live and work here. I reside in the foothills a few miles above Boulder with my lovely wife Pam, daughter Robyn, and son Bronsyn. We are proud to be part of such a forwardthinking community and to raise our family here!

Bolder Insurance was instrumental in enabling me to insure my home guitar business and seamlessly move to a brick and mortar store. While everything can be insured for a price, the coverage I have was unique for musical instruments and very affordable.

When it comes to Gutierrez’s work, trying to put words to the essence of his paintings almost takes away the magic. Each piece goes beyond description, beautifully integrating soul and heart into every aspect of the creation process. Throughout our conversation, he emphasized the feeling of his paintings versus the actual technique that creates them. “I do not take responsibility for making the painting. I take responsibility for being the brush,” he says, “I am not painting, I am the brush. It comes through me. I don’t have a style; I have a feeling. People don’t recognize my work. They recognize the feeling”. His work must be seen beyond the confines of a computer screen or magazine page. It must be felt—inhaled, exhaled, and sensed in all its familiar and unfamiliar dimensions. A rather unconventional journey to becoming an artist, Gutierrez was a hair colorist and owned a hair salon for 35 years. His life’s plot twist would happen on New Year’s Day in ’94 during a visit to Monument Valley with his wife. It was 3 o’clock in the afternoon as a shadow cast from Thunderbird Mesa when he would experience what he calls the epiphany that awakened him to become the artist he was destined to be. “I wasn’t, and then I was an artist," he shares as he remembers spontaneously exclaiming to his wife, “I’ve got to start painting!” while feeling moved by the desert, his most loved environment. This pivotal moment in his life changed everything that was to be. When he got back home to Phoenix, he couldn’t afford the more expensive paints and instead chose acrylics, a medium he is still drawn to paint with today. For two years, he learned to control the paint, finding painters and ideas that would influence him as he continued to follow the artistic call. He never accepted failure as an option. Gutierrez listened to the “failures,” but they didn’t mean that he had failed; it just showed that the painting wasn’t headed the direction he needed to go. “That’s why I can do ten paintings, and only one sells and forget the rest. I don’t take it personally,” Gutierrez reveals. Gifted with a combination of artistic vitality and truthfulness, Gutierrez has transformed countless blank canvases. Each piece captures an unexplainably deep feeling, transmutes an essence, and awakens a sensation within the viewer. His pieces are more than what can be seen on the canvas and are always titled accordingly to emanate further that which he’s trying to communicate through his work. He says, “The title is as important to me as the painting” and that a nuanced connection can be illuminated within the title, the painting and beholders relationship through the lens of their life experiences. In other words, meaning can be made that expands, and potentially enhances, one’s identification to his art. “Paintings and titles are moving through my head right now,” he adds as he unravels the frequency to which art is continuously existing in his life. It’s clear as day how passionately involved yet humbly attuned to his gift this magnificent artist is. A body of work that must be experienced in person, Gutierrez’s art can be found at SmithKlein Gallery and is constantly inviting its audience to feel life’s greatest mysteries—life itself.

Worth the Drive DENVER DATE NIGHT DONE RIGHT ARTICLE BEN WIESE

CITY SCENE

EVERYONE DESERVES A LITTLE VACATION— EVEN IF IT’S JUST A QUICK WEEKEND GETAWAY DOWN US-36. While Boulder and Denver share many things in common such as great food, coffee, beer and kind people, they are very distinct cities with very different histories, both equally worth exploring.

I If coming from Boulder, it’s possible that Denver has what feels like an endless list of things to do if visiting for a weekend: drinks in RiNo, food off of Federal, shows on South Broadway, a stroll through the Santa Fe Arts District, or whatever might be happening in the professional sports world. These are well worth the time, but perhaps consider the following: Friday night dinner, drinks and dessert at Uchi Denver, followed by a night at the Crawford Hotel in the famed Union Station. Uchi Denver, the new location from the award-winning contemporary Japanese restaurant based in Austin, can offer just about any sort of evening to customers. People can choose from daily specials and happy hour deals from 3-6 p.m., single pieces of sushi or rolls, ask a chef for a recommendation, or just sneak peeks at what others are having and go off of that. Though it would be difficult to find something that wasn’t exceptionally delectable, menu highlights include Japanese pumpkin tempura, Norwegian mackerel, sweet chili Brussels sprouts, freshwater eel, shrimp ceviche, Salmon belly and a layered jasmine cream dessert, with cilantro granita, honey crumbles, and topped with pineapple. Uchi also has a robust offering of house cocktails, sake, beer, wine and liquor options, including a selection of Japanese whiskey worth exploring. While it may be difficult for a first timer to know what would best pair with snow crab, servers are quick to offer valuable input if need be. Word of advice: If available, snag a seat at the chef’s table.

Pullman-Style Room at The Crawford

After filling up on Uchi, head to Union Station. But before turning in for the night, be sure to get a little adventurous and take a look around. Denver’s Union Station is equal parts a snapshot of the Denver that once was and the Denver that is today. In the late 1800s, it was the central hub for all travelers heading to and from the city. After a period of deterioration and decline, in July 2014, it opened once again, revitalized and re-imagined as a central hub for Denver travel and culture. Notice the original train ticket booth has been tastefully transformed into Terminal Bar, try to spot the Colorado state flower hiding along the walls, admire the architecture, and perhaps head upstairs to the cozy Cooper Lounge for a nightcap and a gorgeous view of the city. When ready, check into The Crawford Hotel and let all the little details of the place sink in.

Opened in 2014, The Crawford is Denver history in the form of a luxury hotel. The hallway walls are lined with quirky old photos of cowboys, the second-floor “Pullman-style” rooms cleverly evoke train travel from a past life, and gorgeous third-floor lofts feature original wood timbers and vaulted ceilings. A stay at The Crawford Hotel is truly unlike a stay anywhere else in the city. After waking up with a cup of coffee from Mercantile Dining & Provisions or a mimosa and pancakes at Snooze Eatery, end the trip on a high note: Make a pitstop at The Oxford Club for a workout or spa treatment, and if it’s a Saturday morning between April and November, take a stroll through the pet-friendly Union Station Plaza farmers market, featuring local vendors and live music.

“It’s a modern, yet eclectic, space that is very much suited to Michael and Nancy’s personal tastes and needs,” says Jeff Hindman, owner and president at Cottonwood Custom Builders. “The geometry of the home strikes me really as a sculpture in and of itself. It’s very unique from its overall design down to its mix of materials throughout.”

Perhaps the feature most representative of the stunning blend of purpose and beauty exemplified in the home is the “River of Light” that serves as a striking, yet subtle welcome to the structure. Fed by a sculptural rain chain, the river is made up of blue glass pieces, steel and blue resin that is illuminated from below as it flows into the house. “The river of light is part of a narrative arc that all guests traverse as they enter our home,” says Nancy. “It really represents the energy flow into the house that we were looking to achieve. It is both a symbol of this energy and a beautiful visual art element, inside and out, that enriches the visceral experience of the home.”

ROAD TRIP

A Ranch Within Reach AUTHENTICITY, HOSPITALITY, AND NATURE: A NEW FAMILY TRADITION

GROWING UP IN TEXAS, I’M RELATIVELY FAMILIAR WITH THE ALLURE OF DUDE RANCHES. I fondly remember riding my first horse as a young girl, experiencing the quintessential Texan atmosphere, and purchasing my only-to-be-worn-once cowboy hat. It was all for the experience, of course, and added a particular flavor of “fitting in” that I coveted as a British-born trying-so-hard-to-be-Texan cowgirl. Put simply, Dude Ranches are vacation destinations that provide guests with an experience of the Western lifestyle; 4UR Ranch added a depth to this seemingly simple portrayal with a dynamic experience we won’t soon forget.

relaxed after the weekend that we’d just weathered camping in Moab. I couldn't think of a more perfect way to end the day. Refreshed and ready, we rose in the early morning to traverse the stunning terrain on horseback. My partner, Jeff, had never been riding before, but with an approachable lesson from Head Wrangler, Damon Gibbons, he was quickly on his way to being the new sheriff in town. The journey itself was sensational, reviving childhood memories with reins in hand, wind in my hair, and sun gracing me from my Western-hat-wearing head down to my borrowed cowboy boots. After some enlightening conversation, a few film photos, and an introduction to trotting, our trusty steeds carried us safely home to the stables. A quick swing of the leg gracefully landed my feet to the ground, and I was back to the normal vantage point of my 5’3” stature. Looking up to my horse Rein’s gorgeous caramel-tinted mane, I thanked her for gifting me an intimate new perspective of the surrounding lands. The story of this ranch would not be complete without understanding its relationship to the local community of Creede. If at any point you’re looking to expand your horizons, unique happenings abound—the renowned Creede Repertory Theatre, the innovative small houses of Creede America, and the vibrant Stephen Quiller Gallery to name a few— in this charming old miners town. Despite its size, this tiny town sure does pack a loving punch and compliments 4UR Ranch’s experience in a big way. Across the board, 4UR Ranch shines as a glowing example of what is possible through dedication to authenticity and providing only the best. Arriving as curious strangers, Jeff and I left in touch with a palpable sense of feeling like family. If you’ve been looking to introduce a new family tradition, this is certainly the place.

Vince takes events and conversation from his day and incorporates them into the show later night. During the show that evening, Vince began relating some of the stories we had been talking about earlier in the day and adjusting the setlist to reflect those stories he was telling. I was sitting with John, and he leaned over and said, "This is what we need to do for the release of the book, a seated acoustic tour with the band telling different stories from the book." In that instant, John pretty much devised the whole idea they would use for the Living Room tour. As far as the tour itself, I thought the shows were pretty amazing. To be able to see a band in the kind of intimate venues they played on the tour and to have them telling stories in such a relaxed fashion, was incredible. I think it is another aspect of Salmon that makes them so special, their willingness and ability to put themselves out boxes of stuff he had kept which provided some amazing finds. I

HORSE RACING AND BOURBON DRINKING, WHAT ELSE? A PEEK AT THE STORY OF PINHOOK BOURBON

ARTICLE KELLY ERNST | PHOTOGRAPHY POPPY + CO.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU MIX A WINE SOMMELIER, DESIGNER AND…PINHOOK? Pinhook straight Kentucky bourbon is what you get. For founders Sean Josephs, Jay Peterson and Charles Fulford, of Pinhook Bourbon, combining spirits and horses was obvious. The three knew they wanted to use their diverse expertise. The consideration of creating a company that aged bourbon was a frankly-not-so-far-off and highly promising twinkle in the friend's eye. If horse racing and bourbon drinking are in your blood, then you can stop reading and find yourself some Pinhook bourbon. Otherwise, here is a little bit of background. "To pinhook," is the professional term used to describe the act (and business) of buying young, high potential race horses, and then reselling the horses when they are ready to be raced. If you’re good, the horses could make it to the Kentucky Derby. Sean and his team connected the dots and saw that the bourbon business isn’t all that different. Much like a successful pinhook, bourbon experts buy young barrels of distilled bourbon and rye whiskey and mature it them themselves. As each small batch of Pinhook is released it’s named for an up-and-coming thoroughbred horse raised at Bourbon Lane Stables in Kentucky. The flavor profile of every batch is vastly different and exceptionally curated, just as every young horse is. As you collect the bourbon, you can watch its namesake progress through its career. The brand is redefining experiential relationship building for their consumers, and I wanted in on the action. I was graciously guided through a tasting of Bourbon n’ Rye by Sean. He explained that bourbon whiskey has to be distilled with a majority corn and rye whiskey a majority rye grain. When you’re tasting, recall the difference between cornbread and rye bread; the flavor profiles are vastly different, so why shouldn’t the spirits be? Sean suggested using a straw to drop small dots of water into the whiskey. This will lessen the proof to bring out the most complicated flavors. I enjoyed using my new skills as I worked through my glass of bourbon and Alex Jump’s cocktail. What did I taste? Well, I’d recommend you pick up some Pinhook bourbon to find out. Oh, and pro tip: Don’t wait till your horse makes it to the Derby before you crack open your bottle. This is too good to miss out. CONTINUED >

While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).
