WHAT A DIFFERENCE I EXPERIENCED IN GIVING BACK TO MY COMMUNITY LIVING NINE YEARS EACH IN LOS ANGELES, WASHINGTON DC AND NOW BOULDER. In Los Angeles, working for a national magazine, I attended many charity events - all with Hollywood names attached. Attendees got all dolled up, sipped champagne and ate caviar. This indulgence didn’t exactly feel like giving back, but lots of money was raised which was certainly a good thing. Amongst Washingtonians the social conversation began with “Where did you go to college?” and “Where do your kids go to school?” The priority here was academics. Once I found the “right school” for my kids, (truly more stressful than my high schoolers applying to colleges), I was in with a group of kind, inclusive people passionately giving back in the form of cash donations, black tie galas, all styles of fundraisers and plain old, roll up your sleeves volunteering. It was part of the fabric of this community.

CLASSIC. Modern. Sophisticated. Casual. Daring. Timeless. Achieving an ideal harmony between all of these elements was a unique challenge in one recent West Boulder home renovation. But through the joint efforts of the teams at Cottonwood Custom Builders, Sopher Sparn Architects and Red Pepper Kitchen + Bath, it’s a feat that resulted in a stunning abode that at once honors its historic character and locale while functioning as a contemporary living and design marvel. Completed in the fall of 2019, this 1910 home renovation involved undertaking design endeavors large and small—from room overhauls, reorganizations and additions to the preservation of the home’s historic elements. The extremely complex project involved not just incorporating a modern, steel-framed addition into the existing 110-year-old building, but also preserving as much of the historic exterior as possible. “The big idea for the design was to remain true to the historic charm in the front renovation and then progressively evolve to a more contemporary architectural style as we went south to the rear of the building,” says Stephen Sparn, principal at Sopher Sparn Architects. It’s a progression that imbues an enticingly unpredictable, yet immensely comforting feel to the home in which exciting design details, modern features and playful pops of color abound around every corner. While original front window details bring even further character to the charming front façade, colorful modern tiling and a luxe modern palette give the home a bright, bold energy. The kitchen in particular is a sterling instance of reworking one of the home’s original spaces—both in function and design—to make it immeasurably more practical and enjoyable. A geometric Popham tile floor featuring eight different colors marks the space formerly occupied by the kitchen, while the new kitchen area—connected to the family room and full of abundant natural light—features a pristine marble backsplash from Waterworks, quartz countertops from Cambria and custom Plato Woodwork cabinetry in a lovely yellow hue. “The homeowner loves color and is adventurous, so that needed to be reflected in her home,” says Margie McCulloch, owner of Red Pepper Kitchen + Bath, longtime collaborator with the homeowner and designer responsible for all of the home’s interior finishes. “I look to nature for inspiration, as I find that natural colors are more enduring. cabinets might be considered an unusual color, it is an easy color to live with and we took a lot of time to get it exactly right.” A more prominent connection with nature was likewise a goal of the home renovation project given its ideal location at the base of the foothills. “The previous design really didn’t take advantage of the home’s amazing view,” says Kimberly Neill, project manager and estimator at Cottonwood Custom Builders. “We wanted to not just maximize its space, but also make it much more open to the outdoors.” The south façade is a master class in allowing glorious natural views to permeate throughout the home. At the ground level is the connected kitchen and family room area seamlessly integrated with the outdoor patios with options for outdoor dining or private relaxation. Above, the master suite and its dedicated balcony open to gorgeous Flatirons sights. Vaulted ceilings further the space’s welcoming loft-like feel, and it at once feels like a cozy personal retreat and a stunning mountain oasis. “More than any single element, I love how it feels to be in the home,” McCulloch says. With an inimitable sense of place, character and comfort, it’s a unique property that marks a true achievement in blending ample historic charm and peak contemporary elegance.

The fashion scene in Colorado has changed significantly over the years, and Martinez sees his role in the transformation as one of an educator and supporter of quality brands. “Colorado has always been about the casual, functional dress, intermixed with whatever’s trending at the time. I’ve always seen my stores as an opportunity to educate women on the long-term benefits of buying high quality, timeless clothing. I have clients who wear dresses and they still look amazing. Mindfulness of how and where products are made has become a top priority in recent years. Doing what we can to support the industry in the U.S. and encourage sustainable practices in fashion is very important to me,” Martinez says. The style icon has always mixed his love of fashion with his deep devotion to the community and giving back to causes close to his heart. He began his philanthropy work because of a promise made to his late mother and has used his extensive network of generous clients to help raise much needed financial support for several charities and organizations. “I learned from my mother the importance of serving others. I promised her as she lay on her deathbed that I

IT’S PROBABLY PRETTY OBVIOUS THAT ROSS JAMES IS REALLY INTO MUSIC. If you’ve heard him perform with Phil Lesh and the Terrapin Family Band, then you most definitely already know this. What’s a little less obvious is that Ross James is also really into restaurants, and so when the pandemic shut down his two most beloved industries, the self-proclaimed foodie and professional guitarist got to work, calling on friends Ben Baruch and Dave DiCianni of the 11E1even Group for help. “I had this idea to take my two favorite things, food and music, and bring them together in a unique, safe, and responsible way during all of this,” James says. The result is Dine From Out There, a culinary and live music event series that benefits independent restaurants and local musicians. Think: an elevated tasting menu with beverage pairings on Corrida’s rooftop while Widespread Panic’s JoJo Hermann performs. Or James, Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon), Keith Moseley (The String Cheese Incident) and Mark Levy (Circles Around the Sun) jamming throughout a four-course menu at Linger. All done as safely as possible for this COVID era. “Social distancing is a huge part of what we’re doing,” James says. “If people don’t have a safe way to get music right now, they’ll figure out unsafe ways to do it and that’ll set us all back. It’s hugely important for us to do this in a responsible way.” Come winter, they’ll move the show indoors, whether that means setting up shop in a heated tent, or hosting events inside restaurants. (Still socially distanced, of course.) Besides giving diners a much-needed fun night out, the concerts/dinners help restaurants and musicians—two of the hardest-hit groups during all of this. Proceeds benefit Save Our Stages and the Independent Restaurant Coalition, groups representing independent concert venues and restaurants. The Dine From Out There events on the Front Range have been so popular that they’re expanding to the mountains—look for Vail to host some dinners and shows in upcoming months— and beyond—New York City and Austin will host similar events of their own. And even post-pandemic, James says he’d like to keep this music and food pairing going. “We’re going to continue to try to grow, and even when we’re through this bizarre moment in time, this is something I’d love to continue—this marriage of food and music.”

ALEXANDRA LITTLEJOHN IS A CONNECTOR. When she saw a need in the community for easier and safer access to healthy food during the pandemic, she rallied her resources to create the non-profit LittleJohn Produce Box Project (LittleJohnProduce.com). The idea sprouted while social distancing became mandated and she was seeking a contactless way to get her healthy basics. So, she got to work. By partnering with Fresh Guys Produce, who was already delivering food locally, she was able to organize deliveries that would serve even more of the community. The program is key in encouraging balanced eating during this era of Covid and also directly supports local farmers and fine produce purveyors. Diverse food options include their Organic boxes, Fruit and Avocado, or their best-selling Single Lady box for smaller households. LittleJohn’s subscription plans can be made at a range of frequencies as well as one-time purchases. And to make those grocery store runs a thing of the past, they now have boxes filled with locally-sourced cheeses, breads, and farm-fresh eggs. For easier meal-prep and planning, peep their Instagram to know what delicious food is available that week. Social equity is at the core of what drives LittleJohn to grow the program. With the help of 25 volunteers, they are ensuring that under-served members of the community have equal access to their produce. “We want to keep prices low so the barrier to entry for healthy eating isn't a monetary one,” LittleJohn shares. Their “No Questions Asked” donation request form on their website allows anyone to receive a box for free. She has also gained support from the company Oatley who donates 15 boxes a week towards the project, as well as the city of Thornton whose $25,000 grant is helping to feed 170 families each week, including undocumented families who aren’t receiving any federal help at this time. Even during a pandemic, LittleJohn is proving that consuming healthier food while supporting our neighbors is a key part of this healing process.
