Clearly beautiful. Inside and out.
“Our architect knew that I’m French and wanted to integrate my roots in the design of the house, with lots of wonderful windows and shutters. In France your shutters are not just an aesthetic element; you use them to take the heat or cold to protect your house. Maurer understood this, and that’s why they did such a good job with this project. All of our windows, shutters and doors needed re-painting and re-staining. The last time we had this done, the painters took the shutters apart but didn’t keep track of what went where, and it was a disaster! Each shutter is custom made, you see. They look the same, but no two are alike, and many of them did not function afterward! This time it went beautifully. The Maurer crew was great, and very sweet. My husband said, ‘I love these people.’ I don’t think the windows ever looked so great even when the house was brand new.”
LAURE AND MATT MCCONNELL
Don’t say goodbye to your past, just your old bathroom.
As Valentine’s Day gets closer, Hallmark fills the radio waves; rose petals and tasting menus fill our minds, but when you take that all away, what is the most important? How we love each other.
When I was a little girl, I loved Valentine’s Day! Not because of a crush at school or collecting candy, but because, starting off my Valentine’s Day, my parents always had a Valentine’s card waiting by my lunch box, feeling like an extra big hug. And school that day was filled with classmates who were so open and willing to show each other that they care and love one another, not to select individuals, but to all. As an empathetic little kid (carried over into an empathetic big kid these days), this was the dream!
The spirit of loving all, not just a significant other, has carried on throughout the years for me, largely boosted by Parks and Recreation’s spreading the good word and creating the Galentine’s Day celebration phenomenon (Thank you, Leslie Knope!) and this year is no different. Now more than ever, I want to send hugs all around to my loved ones and tell them how much they mean to me because when you strip it all down, that’s what matters most.

For adventurers Bryce Jones and Alex Page, the backcountry has always been a source of challenge and inspiration. As climbers and explorers, they frequently encountered a fundamental problem: staying connected in remote and rugged environments. In 2017, a climb on Castleton Tower in Utah brought the issue into sharp focus.
“That day, there was a guy above us who was attempting to repel the route we were climbing on, but his rope wasn't long enough,” recalls Jones. “He was dangling at the bottom of his rope, trying to yell up to his partner to let him know he was stuck, but his partner was too far away and couldn't hear him. Alex and I witnessed this communication breakdown on the wall and it kicked off a long conversation for us that day. We were like, why aren't walkie-talkies more common for climbing?”
Jones and Page had brought radios that day, but they had failed to hold up, running out of battery before they reached the summit. This frustrating experience planted the seeds for what would become Rocky Talkie. By late 2019, Jones and Page launched the company in Denver with a clear goal: to create a reliable, durable, and easyto-use radio for adventurers.
Building the perfect radio was no easy task—especially for two founders without prior experience in radio technology. But Alex and Bryce approached the challenge with the same passion and determination they bring to their outdoor adventures. Alex’s PhD in Physics provided the scientific expertise, while Bryce’s MBA offered a strong foundation in business strategy. Together, their complementary skill sets proved to be the perfect combination for tackling the challenge head-on.
“Since day one, our process has been to prototype, test, and then iterate,” Jones explains. One key challenge was designing the push-to-talk button. “We knew we wanted our push-to-talk button on the radio to be large and easy to press while wearing winter gloves. But we also wanted it well protected, so it couldn't be damaged in the outdoors or pressed accidentally.”
The result of this process was the Mountain Radio, a device tailored explicitly for climbing, skiing, hiking, and other outdoor pursuits. Lightweight, rugged, and efficient, it quickly earned a loyal following among backcountry enthusiasts.
As Rocky Talkie gained popularity, customers began requesting features that would suit other types of adventures. “We would frequently get messages those first couple of years for people who loved the radio but wanted a fully waterproof radio for water sports and a GMRS radio for higher power output,” says Jones.
ARTICLE BY TONY FIRESTINE
These requests inspired the development of the 5 Watt Radio. This model boasts an IP67 waterproof rating, making it fully submersible, and its increased power output allows for greater range and clarity. Whether used on a rafting expedition or a remote hunting trip, the 5 Watt Radio represents a significant leap in functionality. “We're super proud to have a great option for nearly any adventure and anyone looking for better communication on the water or in the backcountry,” Jones adds.
Rocky Talkie’s commitment to adventurers goes beyond providing reliable communication tools. Since its inception, the company has pledged to donate $2 from every radio sold to search-and-rescue (SAR) teams across the United States, culminating in over $200,000 of direct support.
“We admire that group of individuals so much,” says Jones. “I don't think most people realize that rescue teams are nearly entirely volunteer-based, and most are quite underfunded and reliant on donations. Yet there's more and more people going into the backcountry each year. That means there's more and more lives that volunteer search and rescue teams are saving.”
Looking ahead, Rocky Talkie is focused on scaling production of the 5 Watt Radio, which has been so popular that it temporarily sold out in 2024. The team is also developing a range of new accessories, including headsets and mounts, to enhance the functionality of both their Mountain and 5 Watt radios.
“HE WAS DANGLING AT THE BOTTOM OF HIS ROPE, TRYING TO YELL UP TO HIS PARTNER TO LET HIM KNOW HE WAS STUCK, BUT HIS PARTNER WAS TOO FAR AWAY AND COULDN’T HEAR HIM.
ALEX AND I WITNESSED THIS COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN ON THE WALL AND IT KICKED OFF A LONG CONVERSATION FOR US THAT DAY. WE WERE LIKE, WHY AREN’T WALKIE-TALKIES MORE COMMON FOR CLIMBING?”
by
As Rocky Talkie continues to innovate, its mission remains clear: to give adventurers the confidence to push their limits in the backcountry through improved communication. Through thoughtful design, rigorous testing, and a dedication to providing a portion of sales to SAR teams that keep people safe, Rocky Talkie empowers adventurers to explore boldly and responsibly. REKINDLE YOUR LOVE FOR COOKING THIS VALENTINE'S AT CARBON KNIFE CO
Years ago, when Tina Chon and Craig Field crossed paths in the heat of a professional kitchen, they had no idea their shared obsession with sharp tools would carve the path to a love story.
“In a kitchen full of busy chefs, we bonded over our preference of using Japanese knives,” Craig recalls fondly. “We both took sharpening seriously and somehow, that turned into an ongoing competition to see whose blades were sharpest!”
What started as a rivalry over precision quickly forged into a bond stronger than tempered steel, and the relentless “ding” of the kitchen’s call bell soon gave way to a chorus of wedding bells. As newlyweds, they dreamed of opening a restaurant together, envisioning a Korean tasting menu that would showcase their creativity. But in the early 2010s, Denver’s dining scene wasn’t quite ready to embrace their bold concept.
Undeterred, they turned back to what had brought them together in the first place: their shared passion for knives— especially the art of Japanese cutlery. That love became the spark for Carbon Knife Co, their thriving culinary haven nestled in the heart of the RiNo neighborhood.
Step into their storefront at 3151 Larimer Street, and the seemingly endless wall of handcrafted blades makes an undeniably sharp first impression. Look closer, though, and you’ll discover the real brilliance—a meticulously curated playground designed for chefs and culinary enthusiasts alike.
Lose yourself in their unrivaled collection of cookbooks, then wander into a pasta lover’s paradise, complete with all the tools, ingredients, and accoutrements you could dream of. Just around the corner, you’ll find cocktail essentials begging you to elevate your bar game and a pantry section stocked with gourmet dry goods that will have your mouth watering on the spot!
But the real showstoppers—undoubtedly—are the knives.
The store showcases some of the finest kitchen knives in the world, with over 90% of its collection originating from Japan. Featuring the craftsmanship of 40-50 renowned makers, Tina and Craig have made it their mission to personally connect with as many of the blacksmiths and artisans as possible. “That was a big thing for us—especially when we started—was having a bit of backbone and only selling things that we ourselves, as chefs, would rely on and use,” Craig shares. “That meant going straight to the source: knocking on doors, shaking hands, and meeting these incredible makers in Japan.”
While their collection is vast—with intricate blades of all shapes and sizes—Craig’s advice for chefs of all skill levels is to simplify their knife assortment. “People usually have a big block of 18 knives sitting on their countertop and only end up using two or three of them mainly,” he explains. “So our goal here is to minimalize; people really only need three to five knives max. Anything else, you’re just having fun.”
Whether you’re new to cooking or a seasoned professional, a visit to Carbon Knife Co is bound to spark your imagination and set your taste buds dancing. As Denver's go-to spot for top-tier cooking tools, you might even find yourself rubbing elbows with a local celebrity chef on the hunt for their next blade. Time your visit just right, and you could meet one of the knife makers in person. With sharpening classes, meet-and-greets, and knife-making events, there's always something cooking at Carbon Knife Co!
Regardless of your relationship status this Valentine’s season, it’s never a bad idea (or too late) to fall in love with cooking. And if Tina and Craig’s love story teaches us anything, it’s this: stay sharp, and you might end up with a chef’s kiss.

The Transformative Nature of Walking with Vulnerability Despite Past Experiences/ Judgements. A Testament to the Irrelevance of ‘When’ in the Face of ‘Doing'
ARTICLE BY COLIN GBOLIE PHOTOGRAPHY BY POPPY & CO. BY KELSEY HUFFER
Some spaces and practices, for the majority of us, become seemingly lost to our youth. Imagine the limitless landscape of a canvas with all the paints you could desire in a room with tables, chairs, and walls seasoned with the rainbow of passive splotches and swipes of projects gone by. Such rooms tell the story of the creativity and possibility they embody, but only insofar that a person had made it so. Through her journey in this life, despite the sharp turns and stops, Betsy Cole has done what fleets many and is the goal of most: spending our time doing exactly what it is that gives us purpose in this world.
Betsy had known, as many of us do, that she had a calling, an itch not scratched by the path she walked in life. A very successful run as an interior designer for over 35 years had been the focus of her creative energy. Impressive, to say the least. In this time, she often mused about painting and what it would be like to spend her days putting color to canvas. Ever willing to take a stab at her dreams, she attended an art class to get some time in with the subject of her daydreams. In fact, she attended multiple classes designed for beginner artists or whoever was willing to try their hand at painting. You’d assume this to be the blossoming point of
her now prolific art practice, where daily, she creates new pieces based on the resonance of emotion experienced through her life and meditative practice. But in actuality, it was a point of calcification that kept her from exploring her passions and taking the path that led to her dreams. “I’ve lived with perfection my whole life,” says Betsy. To have teachers who were supposed to be guiding lights for her stop her in the midst of her creative process was quite stifling. “For so long, I had this fear, and I felt so vulnerable,” says Betsy in relation to her artist journey for most of her life. Then, one day, after being convinced by her daughter to take a trip to Bali, a moment of serendipity befell Betsy.
As she sat on the plane, she noticed a tiny ad in her guidebook about an abstract painting class. Upon arrival, she felt a feeling of calm and release she had been missing in her day-to-day, and she attended a private class with her teacher, Wayan Karja. The welcoming nature and space to create outside of the bounds of what one “should” paint left Betsy in the first truly open space for her artistry to flourish. “You Westerners think everything needs to be perfect. It’s about play,” is a message from her teacher that stuck with her as she explored what it would be like to “paint from the
heart,” the practice emblematic of her painting since. Recounting the open nature of learning to paint in Bali, she referenced her teacher's advice, “If you get stuck, just walk in the rice fields.” This openness and ability to put paint to canvas, reflecting her emotions and striving for nothing else, has given Betsy a boundless space wherein her artistry can flourish.
Now, as she continues to explore her creativity, it’s not without fear. However, the continual willingness to come back to the canvas and allow herself to live her life embodying the artistry she’s known herself to have for years has Betsy embracing the calling she’s longed for.
“I either live my life and never get to do this, or do it now.”
The Boulder Contemporary Group in made up of some of Boulder’s most established artists who have exhibited their work both nationally and internationally.
This group has come together to welcome designers, collectors decorators and art lovers to their studios for a personal visit.
Connect here: bouldercontemporarygroup.com
Working through her paintings as a reflection of her emotions can be both dark or light for Betsy, but it all reflects some inner truth she’d been feeling at the time. It’s this capturing of emotion that has led her to leave her pieces unnamed, as she finds it more valuable for the viewer to experience the piece for themselves rather than being led in a certain direction by a title. This embodiment of abstraction is a principle she’s seen appreciated by most everyone who has participated in her open studio.
Betsy is a testament to following the inner voice, the urge toward a calling that may be nagging at the back of your thoughts. She finds herself channeling herself as she connects oil paints to canvas via pallet knife, and if the myriad of works donning her space is any indication, there’s no slowing down. Let Betsy’s story be a calling to your own. Sure, there is fear and vulnerability. But, a certainty in this life is that stepping forward and embracing our callings allow hope, catharsis, and belonging to couple some of the more intimidating emotions as we walk our chosen paths. The Elegance and Essence of Cafe Fritz
What makes a meal unforgettable? At Cafe Fritz, we believe every detail matters. From the wine glasses to the flour in our baked goods to the music being played, we meticulously curate each element to create a memorable dining experience.
Lily, our creative force, and I, her partner, ensure every detail is flawlessly executed. Our contrasting styles—her enthusiastic "yes" and my cautious "no"—are a testament to our shared commitment to excellence. This is also why we have taken the time to introduce full-service breakfast and lunch.
We understand good things take time and that building something real cannot be rushed. It's this dedication that makes a meal at Cafe Fritz more than just a meal—it's a memory. And we strive to create an experience that resonates with guests long after they've left.
After moving to Boulder mid-pandemic as two young women, we felt a gap in the restaurant scene —one that we were excited to fill. We asked ourselves, “Why do we have to go to dinner to have a memorable experience?” Can daytime eating not hold the same elegance and sense of celebration
as dining at night? The answer for us is yes. We are not trying to reinvent the world of dining; rather, we are creating a restaurant we would like to visit ourselves.
But attempting to put Cafe Fritz into a written form doesn’t do it justice. It’s about the experience. In my opinion, our location lends to an ideal experience. The building sits on the corner of Hygiene Road and 75th Street at a three-way intersection. Traveling in from any direction, farms surround you with mountain views that create a sense of nostalgia. And then there is Cafe Fritz, with a white stuccoed exterior, grapevine-covered walkways, and a Dutch door from which you can order a slice of olive oil cake and a glass of fizzy orange pet-nat.
Cyclists are constantly riding by and stopping in for a mid-day espresso, families sit outside while their children run among our garden beds, and Pella Crossing is steps away for the perfect afternoon stroll. We feel daytime eating is usually rushed or generally forgotten. Our goal is to have you feeling nourished and recharged for the day ahead, not to be weighed down by overly large portions or processed ingredients. The cleanness of Lily's cooking is not about having the dishes be strictly vegan or gluten-free but rather using fresh, whole ingredients. Because, yes, there will be butter.
A turning point in Lily’s culinary career was working in northern California, where food, farming, and wine were the way of life. Here, she worked in the larder at James Beard award-winning SHED in Healdsburg, CA. This is where her passion for food bloomed. Lily yearned for more experience in the culinary world and to be able to immerse herself in a culture. She enrolled at ALMA culinary school outside of Parma, Italy. While the formal
education was enlightening, it was living amongst Italians in a small village where tourism wasn’t apparent. Food ruled the town. Experiencing culinary phenomenons first-hand, such as truffle hunting in Italian forests or enjoying aperitivo in town, brings a certain charisma to Lily’s cooking. That, along with the amount of care and love she cooks with.
We plan to reintroduce classics in a contemporary way through small seasonal menus with locally sourced ingredients. You can expect menu items such as duck cassoulet, French omelets, parmesan broth with borlotti beans, and grilled peaches with stracciatella and jambon.
Our seasonal menu serves as a reminder that food is tied to the earth's cycles. Guests learn firsthand about the importance of seasonality when they inquire about a beloved dish like the polenta plum torte, only available in the summer months when the plums are at their best. This simple interaction sparks a conversation about food sustainability and responsible consumption, creating a meaningful dining experience.
We’re also on the way to building an exceptional bar program rooted in quality and discovery. My time at Trick Dog, a “World’s 50 Best Bars” nominee, instilled in me a deep appreciation for the art of the cocktail. I'm applying that knowledge to build a bar program that’s both sophisticated and approachable.
We champion small-batch producers and unique ingredients; our smoked sunchoke honey liqueur cocktail, a delightful blend of smoky, sweet, and tart, is a perfect example. Sharing these unexpected flavors—and introducing guests to ingredients like the surprisingly delicious sunchoke—is what makes it special.
For us, it’s all about connection. Our doors opened less than a year ago, and the future holds so many possibilities of what Cafe Fritz can become. It’s thrilling to have first-time guests walk through our doors and just as exciting to have our returning regulars. We have plans to open a larder in the space connected to the cafe. Here, we will offer a curated selection, such as niche olive oil, tin fish, biodynamic wine, fresh farm eggs, and whole rotisserie chicken.
At the end of the day, we want to create a space where anyone can walk through the door and feel taken care of. Hygiene Rd. itself has a comfort and simplicity about it. When reimagining the cafe, we wanted to create a space that helped you to slow down. Whether sharing a meal with a friend, taking a moment for yourself, or stopping in to grab your morning coffee, we hope to give our guests a refreshing sense of ease and elegance. We hope that when you dine with us, you can be in the moment by smelling the aromatics of the kitchen, gazing at the surrounding scenery, and appreciating what you are eating. We hope to be your place.

A SMITHSONIAN EXHIBIT AT THE BOULDER JCC
ARTICLE BY MEREDITH ROWE
The Boulder Jewish Community Center isn’t one thing or even one building. Built in 2016, the Boulder JCC, or the J as it’s affectionately called, is home to a 2-acre farm that donates 5,000 pounds of food annually and a cafe that partners with Boulder Bridge House/Community Table Kitchen. There are pickleball courts, a forest school, and a preschool that began 40 years ago with just five kids. There’s also extensive, low- and no-cost programming, including adult art classes and workshops, built to foster community and embody the spirit of what Jewish life can be, not what it is or was.
“We’re not a religious center,” says Jonathan Lev, executive director of the Boulder JCC. “We are a cultural and educational center, and we provide space for the community at large.”
On the front door of the 52,000-square-foot campus, there’s a sign that says, “You Are Welcome Here.” They show that commitment to the Boulder community by opening their doors to all kinds of nonprofits, government agencies, local businesses, and charitable organizations, playing host to board meetings, galas, fundraisers, conferences, ceremonies, and events for local families. They also partner with Minister Glenda Robinson and the NAACP to host an annual MLK Day Celebration.
“Around 40,000 people come into our building a year,” says Lev. “Over $5 Million was raised [here] last year. Not for the JCC, but for other nonprofit organizations who had events here.”
This year, the Boulder JCC will also be the first and only Jewish Community Center in the country to host The Smithsonian’s The Bias Inside Us. This groundbreaking traveling exhibition and community-engagement project is grounded in scientific research and teaches viewers that bias is inside everyone. It sets aside shame and shows that bias is an inherent part of being human, encouraging viewers to be more aware.
Joy Alice Eisenhauer, director of arts, culture & education at the Boulder JCC, spearheaded bringing the exhibit to Boulder and sees it as an extension of their commitment to lifelong learning and fostering a truly inclusive environment. Over 20 community partners are also helping to bring the exhibit to life, including the Rotary Club and other volunteers acting as “Docents.”
The exhibit will be on view at the JCC from February 22, 2025 - March 23, 2025, and will be completely free and open to the public whenever the JCC is open. There will be sign-ups on their website, and Eisenhauer encourages school groups, community
organizations, businesses, book clubs, friends, and families to come explore and reflect. It’s appropriate for those middle school-aged and up (though all are welcome), and Lev thinks everyone who comes will find a way to relate to it.
“It connects to who we are as humans,” said Lev. “It’s impactful, striking, and informative, and it provides a new way to understand bias.”
One of the goals as the project travels the country is to support communities in having meaningful dialogue to create positive change and increase empathy and inclusivity, and there will be several events running alongside the exhibit to encourage these connections and conversations.
There will be an opening reception on February 22 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., and Laura Zelle, the guest project manager for The Bias Inside Us, will be there to further contextualize the exhibit.
On March 3, there will be a screening and panel discussion around For the Living, a film that centers on the explicit biases that have led to genocides around the world, like the Holocaust.
On March 6, there will be a Cultural Arts Summit with the Boulder City Office of Arts and Culture, featuring a panel discussing how to bring more awareness to internal and implicit bias. There will also be a new gallery show called The Triumphant Spirit kicking off with an interview with the Director of the Golda Meir House Museum.
On March 9, Jewish Disability Advocates will host a panel discussion on bias and ableism.
The exhibit is a solo experience, but ultimately the team at the JCC is excited for what it can mean for the collective community. They hope people walk out of the building with curiosity—and maybe a new friend.

A Cozy Watering Hole Offering Hearty Meals, Premier Stouts, and a Friendly Atmosphere Perfect for February
“Expect good service, friendly employees, and an overall relaxed atmosphere. Oh, and good beer!”
“Stout month has become one of the busiest months of the year for Mountain Sun,” says GM Pat when regaling me on the virtues of the coming tradition of Stout Month in February. This tradition is a great way to keep the energy high during the cold months through house-brewed stouts from their Denver location that consolidated right before COVID. Additional guest beers and their tried and true pub fare are still in full effect for Stout Month (The burgers and fries are INCREDIBLE btw).
Last Stout Month, they did a bingo card where you cross off different squares by going through different beers, culminating in a grand prize at the end of the month. Look forward to similar games and happenings this February across their locations. Despite the general economic downturn the restaurant industry has seen, Mountain Sun continues to offer excellent value and experience to any and all patrons. The new happy hour two-pint pitcher for six bucks, burger and fries for ten bucks, and much more create a great incentive for a post-work/weekend reprieve.
Don’t drink? They have non-alcoholic beers canned and ready to enjoy as well! To those who haven’t been yet, Pat says, “Expect good service, friendly employees, and an overall relaxed atmosphere. Oh, and good beer!”
Owner Kevin says, “We’re really looking forward to Stout Month.” A staple at Mountain Sun started by Jack Harris, their first brewer, the year they opened 31 years ago. After having seen the industry unfold decades into the craft, Kevin has seen Stout Month become a phenomenon in the area. Mountain Sun was one of the first brewpubs to have 21 beers on tap and keep driving the craft forward. Stout Month sees the vast majority of their taps turn to various stouts, ensuring a favorite is found by all who participate. The team is really looking forward to Stout Month, a time of celebration and livening the cold months. With the reopened Vine Street Pub and Brewery, this year marks the first Stout Month on Vine Street since the pandemic. With people flying in from across the county and local fans ready to partake, it’s sure to be a festive celebration you don’t want to miss! Grab a stout at one of their locations this February and enjoy! To learn more, visit MountainSunPub.com
How Community, Performance, and Exploration
Combine in the Boulder-Based HIMALI Brand
ARTICLE BY LISA VAN HORNE
The spark that fueled the creation of HIMALI was struck when co-founders Dave Schaeffer and Tendi Sherpa met at base camp while climbing Mount Aconcagua in Argentina. But the brand's true beginnings stretch back much farther and are rooted in the kindred spirits and aspirations of these two friends and business partners.
Dave’s climbing journey began at the local recreation center as a youth growing up in Colorado—a positive outlet that quickly grew into part of his identity. Tendi grew up in the remote village of Khembalung in eastern Nepal, where he pursued a career in mountaineering, summiting Mount Everest seventeen times and guiding climbers from across the globe.
Throughout his experiences, Tendi noticed a gap in the market for high-performance gear that both met climbers' functional needs and reflected the spirit of the mountains. His desire to create efficient, high-quality mountaineering gear melded with
Dave's entrepreneurial nature and interest in pursuing business opportunities in the outdoor gear space.
"When I met Tendi, we bonded over a lot of things," says Dave. "One of them being quality climbing apparel that was made for mountaineers and gave back to the community."
"From the start, we've been committed to honoring the mountains and the people who call them home," says Tendi.
Officially founded in 2014, HIMALI began with a selection of tee shirts and one down jacket. Dave and Tendi initially used Kickstarter to gain momentum and organically grow their business, always maintaining their emphasis on authenticity, community, and creating ethically made products. Today, the brand offers a full suite of climbing apparel for a diverse range of treks, all inspired by the spirit of the world's highest peaks and the intrepid adventurers who set out to explore them.
“The community here shares our passion for exploration and sustainability, and Pearl Street provides a vibrant space where we can connect with people who love the outdoors as much as we do. Being in Boulder allows us to foster relationships with climbers, hikers, and dreamers who inspire us to keep pushing boundaries.”
"The fourteen 8,000-meter peaks have always served as a guiding light for our product design and brand ethos," says Dave. "It stands for wanting to do something seemingly larger than life, for having big goals and working hard to achieve them. If you love the outdoors and want to be the best version of yourself, you have a place in this community."
"What sets HIMALI apart is our deep connection to the mountains and the authenticity behind our brand," says Tendi. "Every product is designed and tested by people who live and breathe the challenges of high-altitude climbing."
This principle of community permeates every aspect of HIMALI. Born from friendship and fostered by relationships amongst an international community of mountain athletes, the brand has also been embraced by the city where Dave and Tendi chose to found HIMALI's first storefront.
"The community here shares our passion for exploration and sustainability, and Pearl Street provides a vibrant space where we
can connect with people who love the outdoors as much as we do," says Tendi. "Being in Boulder allows us to foster relationships with climbers, hikers, and dreamers who inspire us to keep pushing boundaries."
As the HIMALI brand continues to grow, Dave and Tendi look forward to seeing their gear equip more and more adventurers as they work to achieve their goals. They are also proud to continue giving back to the communities close to their hearts, including supporting Himalayan locales and raising awareness of the region's culture and the challenges it faces. Their goals remain rooted in both their own ideals and the essence of climbing itself.
"Climbing teaches me humility and perseverance—it’s not just a physical challenge, but a spiritual journey," says Tendi. "HIMALI represents that same journey, combining purpose with passion to create something meaningful."

ARTICLE BY SARA BERCHOLZ
Travel will always change the landscape of our minds, but what happens when we push beyond our comfort zones and explore from a different perspective?
When my dear friends, Peggy Markel (culinary travel doyenne) and Ashely Wick (transformational coach with superpowers), put their forces together for a collaborative sailing trip, everything in me was a YES. It was the Italian vacation of my dreams, enhanced to the max by going deep with contemplative and transformational work. I imagined the sun, salt, and wind; the picturesque coast; the bright food and wine; a group of adventurous spirits; introspection; and spending time out of time at sea. And let me tell you, reader, this is exactly what I got.
In the timeless classic "Sailing Alone Around the World", Joshua Slocum writes, “The sea has a way of stripping away all pretenses and revealing our true selves.” This could not be more true of my experience exploring the Pontine and Phlegraean islands off the coast of Napoli. After a night in Rome at a charming boutique hotel, an easy train ride to Napoli, and a quick ferry to Procida, we convened aboard our handsome 68-foot sailboat. There were ten of us aboard, including our two bronzed, affable Italian capitani. Aside from them, this trip was for women, and what an incredible smattering of accomplished, creative, gorgeous souls it was. We were shown our cabins where colorful little
welcome gifts awaited us on our bunks, and then aperitivo on deck! Prosecco dotted with Amareno cherries, fat slices of juicy watermelon, plump green olives, and salty potato crisps. That first evening, we dined al fresco on the island at the edge of the water—perfect fried anchovies, a famous lemon salad, pasta with clams, swoon After dinner, we strolled to a tiny gelateria where, as everywhere we went, the proprietor knew Peggy by name. I went to strachiatella heaven.
Days stretched long and languorous. Mornings were loose, spent nibbling from a breakfast spread laid atop a cheerful floral tablecloth in the galley, sitting meditation or reading on the deck sipping espresso, or a vigorous island walk followed by pastries and shakerato (a delicious shaken iced espresso drink) in an impossibly charming piazza hung with bougainvillea. Then we were on the move, maybe to the far side of an island where we paddle boarded to a secret grotto in the cliffside or sailing off to the next rugged island. Lunch was onboard, fresh and bright, eaten in bathing suits at our leisure, peppered with brisk swims to work up more appetite.
One day, as we headed out to sea, a maestrale blew in, and the water was just stormy enough for those of us with less experienced sea legs to get seasick!
Dear reader, while seasickness is not pretty, I must tell you that the hours we spent on the rough Tyrrhenian Sea were some of the most magical of the trip. Did some of us get a little seasick? Yes! But we took tender care of each other, stared vigilantly out at the entrancing horizon, and had a sense of true adventure! Miraculously, when we came into calm water and dropped anchor, any sign of sickness vanished along with the clouds. We swam in the clear blue water, ate a luscious lunch, and sipped the most refreshingly crisp white wine produced on the island we were now looking upon. The cheer was high; the group knit together by the shared experience and plenty of gratitude for our remarkable good fortune on this trip and in life.
Each day, Ashley worked her magic, leading us through exercises designed to uncover our unique genius. Sessions included contemplations, discussions, journaling, even watercoloring. What emerged for each of us through Ashely’s masterful guidance was a clear sense of how we shine and a path for manifesting that forward in our lives.
Peggy (or Peggy Peggy as Antonio, our Capitano calls her), is a dionysian Aphrodite. She offered each juicy peach, paper-thin slice of prosciutto, and tangle of silky al dente pasta like jewels with grace, warmth, and beauty.
Peggy’s relationship to Italy and its bounty runs deep. She knows each island like the back of her hand: where to procure the best capers, anchovies, or limoncello; the beach with the clearest water and cafe for aperitivo; the shop for an easy, chic sundress. Her invitation to awaken
our senses, to taste the earth and the sea and its myriad of expressions, was a gift unto itself.
On the last night, we all put on our best dresses for dinner at a mystery location. A water taxi motored us over ink-dark water to a long dock leading to a staircase, leading to a restaurant perched above the sea. Peggy and Antonio were welcomed like old friends by the host and cooks. We were served all the pasta, all the fish, all the wine! A true feast. Ashley invited us to share visions of our future selves based on the work we had done with her, and the pictures painted by each woman were heartbreakingly inspiring. We laughed, we cried, we clinked glasses again and again. And afterward, full to the brim with food and love, we went to get one last gelato, naturalmente.
Peggy and Ashley have their next trip sailing out on the Italian seas planned for June 21 – 27, 2025.

COVER ARTWORK BY SARAH PLONK OF SKP INK
Ever walked away from a date or a partner, not knowing whether to feel baffled or amused by something that was said? Emily O’Brien knows exactly what that feels like—so she decided to turn it into a book.
Things I Heard While
Dating is a collection of over 100 hilarious, awkward, and downright bizarre one-liners from real-life dating experiences. From cringe-worthy pickup attempts to jaw-dropping moments in relationships, this book showcases the funny and outlandish things people say when they’re trying—and sometimes failing—to make a connection.
I recently caught up with Emily, the Raleigh-based writer behind the book, to learn more about how this quirky project came to life.
“It all began as more of an art project than a book,” she shares. For years, Emily’s been a self-proclaimed "compilation lover,"
someone who gravitates toward groups of things, lists, and quirky collections. It was this love of compilations and a memorable one-liner from an ex that sparked the idea for Things I Heard While Dating. The line stuck with her, and she figured others must have similar stories.
It wasn’t until Emily was on a road trip from Boulder to Raleigh with her husband and daughter that everything clicked. As they drove, she realized: this needs to be a book . After settling in Raleigh, Emily launched a website where people could share their most outrageous dating lines. Thanks to her involvement with CreativeMornings, a non-profit spotlighting perspective art that month, her site gained traffic, and as submissions poured in, Emily knew she had a book on her hands.
For Emily, the entire process felt more fun than work. “I spent my ‘off-hours,’ weekends, and holidays just marinating in the project,” she says. What started as a hobby became something much bigger, and Emily enjoyed reading through the submissions. The toughest part? Narrowing down to just the right ones.
Emily explains that the book is meant to be lighthearted, like “a piece of candy.” It’s not about bashing others but about sharing a laugh and connecting over our universal experiences. “I want people to escape for a bit,” she says. “My goal is the book helps you laugh and feel good, whether you're reading it alone, with friends, or at a dinner party.”
Despite the absurdity of some stories, Emily’s perspective on dating hasn’t changed much from her experiences 20 years ago. “Things are different now, but dating is still about testing the waters,” she says.
Looking for a laugh or a Galentine’s Day gift? Things I Heard While Dating is the perfect read. If you’ve got a wild dating story of your own, Emily invites you to share your piece at ThingsIHeardWhileDating.com
