not one of those years! For portions of 2020, we felt as if the clock had stopped and time was literally standing still. Every minute of the lockdown felt like an hour and it was easy to forget the day of the week, as a Tuesday was no different from a Saturday. Supporting local restaurants and purchasing takeout was often the highlight of our week. Some days were very very dark. 2020 is a year that will forever define our world as we know it. We now all use terms like “flatten the curve” and “social distancing.” A year ago the idea of virtual school seemed not only impossible, but ridiculous, and now it’s become the norm for many of our children. 2020 is a line in the sand and moments in time will be marked as BC (Before COVID) and AC (After COVID). SCVTHS STUDENTS TAKE PART IN ANNUAL ANTI-HIB EVENT The Linkages Department at Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTHS) hosted an event for students and staff to add to the school’s Wall of Peace. The wall was started in 2008 and grew from a global movement where art is used as a way to recognize the need for world peace. The statement on the wall reads, "Those who have designed a brick are committed to making a difference by promoting a learning environment of unity, respect, kindness, and peace." The wall grows each year and there are currently 450 painted bricks making up the display.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIER ONE VENTURES LLC EATING HEALTHIER IS A COMMON NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION, BUT IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE INTIMIDATING OR IMPOSSIBLE TO ACCOMPLISH. Nadia Quarishi, a Holistic Nutritionist, helps people adopt healthier eating habits by emphasizing that big differences can be achieved through small, sustainable changes. Through her business, Nourished by Nadia, she helps clients move toward a diet consisting of more plant-based foods and fewer processed ingredients. “Start small! Pick one habit you want to improve upon. Whether it’s adding a daily side salad, eating a bowl of fruit, or exercising,” advises Nadia. Holistic nutrition encompasses the whole self. In addition to diet, Nadia helps her clients evaluate many factors such as sleep habits, stress levels and fitness routines, and analyzes how they all contribute to their overall health. Nourished by Nadia offers nutrition consultations, meal delivery service and personalized plans to help clients increase energy levels, lose weight and feel better in general. Helping others achieve healthier lifestyles is a personal passion for Nadia. After ten years in the field of corporate finance, she likes to say that her career path pivoted in 2016 from managing wealth to managing health. “We’re living in a society of convenience and junk food,” says Nadia. “Sadly, fast food tends to be more accessible than healthy food. We have to make an extra effort to eat healthily.” Nourished by Nadia offers organic, plant-based, prepared meals, delivered every Sunday throughout Central New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania. Their varied menu changes weekly, featuring seasonal items, vegan options, and immune-boosting products. “It’s been amazing to see families enjoying my meals each week,” says Nadia. If change seems overwhelming, Nadia’s advice is to keep it simple and focus on one meal at a time. “Any small change will help improve your health,” she says. Here are three healthy recipes that Nadia recommends to keep you in the zone all day long. For more information on Nadia’s meal delivery service visit nourishedbynadia.com.

is, ‘Wow, every class and every instructor is unique. It always feels like a different workout!’” The studios are following all mandated guidelines to keep their staff and members safe. “Everyone has their own station with their own individual equipment that is at least six feet from the next station,” says Karen. “When members are done with their classes, they all sanitize their stations with sanitizing wipes, and we steam clean all the mats. When the new class arrives, those members come in one by one and we do temperature checks. Then, everyone goes to their station and cleans them again with soap and water. Masks are worn at all times.” They also have a germicidal UV-C light system, which they lovingly call Medusa, because she turns on in the middle of the night and you can’t look at her lights. In addition, they use a disinfection fogger system and have changed all the air filters to follow

Growing up, Laura was a member of the Staten Island JCC. As a teen, she met her future husband, Brett, at a JCC sleep-away camp. While she was pregnant with her second child, Laura longed to move closer to her family. Hearing about a new JCC being launched in Bridgewater, she applied and was hired as program director, becoming one of the founding staff members in 1999. Over the years, she steadily moved up the ranks. “I am fortunate to have worked 30 years in the JCC world and to have my children, Jonah and Samara, grow up here,” she says. Laura stresses that the JCC is a social service agency. Its mission is to help peo-

ple—whether that means providing childcare for working parents, building a vibrant community for seniors or giving children and adults with special needs an opportunity to pursue their interests. In addition to numerous programs, it operates the JCC Bridgewater Rising Tide Special Olympics Swim Team, hosts an annual prom for adults with special needs, and recently opened an ADA compliant splash pad that is accessible to people with physical disabilities. Since its founding, the JCC has awarded over $6 million in scholarships and financial aid. The JCC works with Safe+Sound Somerset, providing free summer camp tuition to families that have suffered from domestic violence, and with the Interfaith Hospitality Network in Somerville to provide free preschool and camp to children who are homeless.

LOCAL’S CHOICE (CONTINUED) “We welcome individuals and families of all race, religion, culture, national origin, sex, gender identity (including gender expression), sexual orientation, economic status, mental or physical disability, and backgrounds to be part of our JCC Family,” Laura says. “We are a community center first. I remind the staff that they impact people in ways they can’t even imagine. Maybe they say ‘hello’ to someone who lives alone, give them a smile, and truly care about what they’re saying to them. I am proud of our staff: From the receptionist who knows everyone’s name to the security guard who makes a game out of taking the kids’ temperatures during the pandemic.” WHAT SHUT DOWN? “Shutting down the JCC last March when the pandemic hit devastated us. So much was unknown: How could we still be there for our families?” Laura says. “We spent a few days mourning what was lost, but then we mobilized. By the end of the week, we had a virtual JCC.” We offered online morning programming for children and daily fitness classes. The swim team began training virtually. The special needs programs thrived. The JCC partnered with local food banks, filling their freezers and using the gymnasium for non-perishables. Staff delivered groceries from the food bank to people unable to travel. “Since we knew the isolation would be toughest on seniors, we became a resource, calling them regularly to say hello, shopping for them, and bringing them meals,” Laura says. The JCC also launched dynamic virtual cultural programming such as an exhibition presented by the Holocaust Memorial and Education Center, Zoom coffee chats for seniors, film festivals, and the “In Your Living Room Virtual Speaker Series,” featuring speakers such as Deepak Chopra, Michael J. Fox, Cameron Douglas and Joan Lunden.

“When the JCC shut its doors we truly got a sense of what we mean to our community." 30

SPREADING KINDNESS WITH KINDLI THE NEW DIGITAL PLATFORM THAT’S REVOLUTIONIZING SOCIAL MEDIA

ARTICLE MICHELLE GLICKSMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY TRACY ANN BATTAGLIA/FULLY ALIVE PHOTOGRAPHY 34

Bridgewater Lifestyle | January 2021

IT WAS 2017, AND MARTIN DIAMOND WAS BRAINSTORMING. The founder and CEO of VURIA, LLC, a digital media firm, he has managed the design and development of thousands of web and mobile projects, marketing initiatives, and media productions for companies around the world. Matt was wellversed in the digital space, which is where the father of three saw something he realized he wanted to change. “My problem was looking at social media and seeing what I thought were so many things wrong with it, which I [then] sought to fix, to give it a purpose and make it better,” he explains. Two months ago, what began as an idea launched as an app, website, and social movement. Kindli, as it’s called, is a platform with a purpose—and it’s ready to change the world. Kindli was built to focus on the positive and eliminate the negative. Yes, that means that there’s no bullying or hateful language, and there are no depressing conversations about news or politics. Instead, the narrative is on kindness and positivity. The revolutionary idea was created to propel a sustainable movement that impacts positive global change. Even in just its development stage, the idea of spreading kindness had a big draw. In that time, it attracted such founding members as professional baseball and football star Tim Tebow, three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings, and WWE star Thaddeus Ballard (also known as Titus O’Neil). Darleen Santore (also known as Coach Dar) who reached acclaim for her work with professional athletes, signed on as the CKO—Chief Kindness Officer. “I have served as the U.S. Ambassador for Global Pay It Forward Day since 2015, and as a board-certified occupational therapist and mental conditioning coach, helping the well-being of others and creating positive global change has always been my personal mission. When I was asked to partner with Kindli as Chief Kindness Officer, I knew this would be an incredible opportunity to make an impact, spread kindness, and help boost the mental well-being of people who use social media daily. I believe the world needs Kindli and is ready to create a positive and tangible shift in humanity,” Darleen says. So, what exactly is Kindli? While in some respects it looks similar to the social media apps that most people are already familiar with in that they can post, like, and comment, Kindli is distinctly different. Everything on the site is positive, and kind acts are celebrated. It is designed to be a safe space for people to connect, and where they can be inspired or inspire others.

“I HOPE THAT THIS PLATFORM HELPS THE WELL-BEING OF PEOPLE—THEIR MENTAL HEALTH—AND IT LIFTS UP THEIR SPIRITS AND INSPIRES THEM TO SERVE.” —DARLEEN SANTORE

KINDLI CARDS In addition to the platform, Kindli provides a home for the “Pay It Forward” movement with real-world Kindli Cards™, a proprietary, patent-pending method of tracking kind acts worldwide. Martin explains them by using the well-known Starbucks drive-thru “pay it forward” experience. Except, in this scenario, a Kindli user would leave a Kindli Card with the barista, and ask them to give it to the car behind them when they tell them their order was paid for. The card—which has no details on it that would personally identify the card’s giver—has a QR code. If the person who was on the receiving end wanted to say thank you, they could scan the card with their phone and send an anonymous thank you message, photo, or video to the Kindli member. That member could then share that message to their Kindli profile to inspire others to perform their own acts of kindness. Those involved do have the option to reveal their identity and connect on the platform if they want. Not only were the cards created to inspire kindness, but to track the number of kind acts they inspired, as well. Kindli founders have a mission of inspiring one billion acts of kindness around the world. MAKING IT A POSITIVE PLACE Anyone can create an account on Kindli and browse for free, but there are safeguards built in to ensure that it remains a safe and positive place. In order to comment or post content—the first time only—members are required to make a one-time, one dollar payment, which Kindli then donates 100% of to one of its charity partners, which include organizations such as United Way Worldwide, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, ASPCA, GLAAD, Special Olympics, Disabled Veterans, Susan G. Komen, Tim Tebow Foundation, and Bullard Family Foundation. This feature is designed to not only eliminate fake accounts, but since the purchase will be linked to an in-app purchase, it also enforces accountabilMartin Diamond and Kindli cards

ity and strict content guidelines. The proceeds help with another of Kindli’s goals—to donate one billion dollars to nonprofit organizations.

36

Bridgewater Lifestyle | January 2021

Martin agrees that inspiring one billion acts of kindness across the globe and donating one billion dollars to charity are big goals, but says confidently, “Yes, they are lofty goals, but I think with this platform we can reach them.” “The basic premise [of Kindli] was to create a positive alternative for social media where people can interact and walk away feeling good about the time they spent on the platform, and maybe feel a little more positive about the world and life in general, rather than what I saw was just a downward spiral of negativity and a very hostile, very unfriendly environment that was being fostered and just increasing in ‘traditional’ social media,” he explains. “It really just was trying to figure out a path to fix what I saw were the major flaws in those platforms that were allowing them to be abused and taken over by hate, and, essentially, allowing them to become a very, very toxic environment.” REDEFINING THE INFLUENCER Kindli also aims to change the current perception of what it means to be an influencer on social media. Currently, influencers are generally popular and are often endorsing products. Kindli hopes to alter that definition to someone who changes others’ behavior and inspires them to do good things, and truly makes a positive impact on those around them. “On Kindli, rather than putting the focus on just likes and popularity, our emphasis is more on what have you done to make a difference, and how much of an impact are you making?” Everyone from companies to celebrities to individuals will be able to show the world how much they are an influencer by the number of Kindli cards they’ve given out, based on the number that will be linked to their profile. SPOT THE BUS Kindli also now has a dedicated bus, which goes around with what they call their “Street Team,” and often a celebrity, making random stops to do random acts of kindness. This was recently on display when Tebow and the Street Team took the bus around Phoenix, Arizona, and stopped at a gas station, where they surprised customers by paying for their gas, and Tebow actually pumped their gas and cleaned their windshields. They also stopped by a teen football practice, where Tebow gave the team an inspiring speech, as well as a grocery store where they paid for customers’ groceries, and more. Kindli will also feature Daily Kindness content, a stream of feelgood stories, videos, and news. “I hope that this platform helps the well-being of people—their mental health—and it lifts up their spirits and inspires them to serve. I hope this is the platform they turn to, to be uplifted and inspired. [After being on the site], I want people to leave it better than they started their day. This is going to change the word for better,” says Darleen. Find Kindli at Kindli.org, or download the mobile app in the App Darleen Santore

HER ANXIETY BY HELPING OTHERS, SHE EMBRACED THE IDEA. She designed a logo and launched “The Kindness Fairy” on YouTube to document how she spreads kindness in the community. She posted her first video in March, just as New Jersey was shutting down due to the pandemic. Undaunted, Sophia, now 12 and in sixth grade at Eisenhower Intermediate School in Bridgewater, decided to focus on cheering people up during this stressful time. In her first video, she used her allowance to buy five $10 Starbucks gift cards, which she gave to random people at the mall. In other videos, she participated in a drive-by birthday celebration for a 6-year-old she learned about on Facebook, donated a dog

bed and bleach to the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter and made “thank you” signs for healthcare workers at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, the Green Knoll Fire Department, the Bridgewater Police and ShopRite workers. Sophia also produced a three-part series on teacher appreciation: hanging a “thank you” poster on her fifth-grade teacher’s window as she was cleaning out her classroom; delivering a sign, balloons and a plant to her third-grade teacher on her birthday; and giving another teacher a gift basket and serenading her with “You’ve Got a Friend.” Sophia’s work inspires her friends to perform acts of kindness as well. She encourages people to follow her lead and send her photos and videos of how they are spreading kindness to her social media accounts or email to be used in her new series “The Kindness Champions of the World.” Her goal now is to attract sponsors to fund her efforts to help people in need, such as buying groceries for
