Editor’s Letter
T
he fall on Cape Ann gives us another taste of the glorious changes that take place from season to season in our corner of the world. The days get shorter. The air gets crisper. The trees burst with the fiery glow of fall foliage. Nearby events like the Topsfield Fair and Salem’s Haunted Happenings are annual rites of passage. All citizens of Cape Ann have their own definition of what fall means to them. For me, fall is all about football season. Association football, that is…soccer. Fall signals the return of coaching club and high school soccer. Another season of juggling full-time and parttime professional responsibilities so I can run around from pitch to pitch, running practice sessions and games almost every day.
Anyone who gets into coaching a sport has a competitive streak. Coaches want to win. Most people never get to play or coach for a professional championship at the highest level of sport. There is a thrill in chasing league and tournament championships. But coaching has the potential to bring rewards that outshine any high school or club championship. As my fall seasons progress, many of the boys and girls I have coached and mentored will suit up for their college teams. They play for all levels of NCAA and NAIA institutions. Some have become collegiate captains and all-stars. Maybe one of my players could earn a paycheck playing as a professional someday, but all will emerge from college with the education and experience they need to pursue their occupational and personal dreams. For me, coaching is about the opportunity to teach and mentor young people. It is a chance to help them avoid the mistakes that many of us make as we mature. It is a chance to use the game to teach more than skills and tactics. Whether your teaching duties this fall are in a classroom, on a sports field, or in the most daunting and rewarding environment of them all – the home as a parent – I salute all of my fellow Cape Ann citizens who take the time to help our young people acquire the knowledge they need to live better lives and make our world a better place.

PET PROTECTION Earlier this year, the Massachusetts House and Senate enacted Senate Bill 2345, An Act Protecting Animal Welfare and Safety. It included many of the provisions of the original PAWS Act filed by Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr (R-Gloucester) in October 2013. The legislation stiffens penalties for animal abuse and requires veterinarians to report suspected mistreatment. “Animal abuse in our Commonwealth is simply unacceptable, and legislation to confront it has been a major priority in this session,” says Senator Tarr. “Now we have acted to increase penalties to send a clear and immediate message, and to create a task force that will build a foundation for further action.”
Open Again After undergoing lengthy renovations, Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester reopened toward the end of summer. Featuring enhanced galleries and new installations, the museum also opened with two special exhibitions on display. Those exhibitions were “A Chosen Place: Walker Hancock & Friends” and “The Importance of Place: A Sketchbook of Drawings by Stuart Davis.” “A Chosen Place” included work from Hancock and contemporaries including Paul Manship, George Demetrios and James McClellan. As for “The Importance of Place,” it showcased a small sampling of Davis’ drawings, which were demonstrative of his development as an artist. Cape Ann Museum was founded in 1873 as the Cape Ann Scientific and Literary Association. It now includes galleries, an auditorium, library/archives, a children’s activity center, two sculpture gardens and two historic homes.

GLOUCESTER PUBLIC SCHOOLS MAKE IT CHANGE Global Messaging Solutions provider IceWarp announced that its proprietary migration tool recently helped Gloucester Public Schools migrate more than 700 users to IceWarp Messaging Server. The school system needed a new email platform because it felt the password and group management features of its old email solution had become obsolete. The migration took less than 24 hours and no emails were lost using IMAP. Once IceWarp was installed, the District was very pleased with its long-term ease of administration. “While the state and local budget situation is gradually improving, school districts have not yet fully recovered from budget shortages,” says Cliff Novellino, director of North American Sales at IceWarp. “Having an efficient and reliable IT infrastructure is one of the best ways schools can make their budgets stretch far. We are proud that Gloucester selected IceWarp to achieve this goal.” “We needed a more modern solution that included groupware capabilities and better password management,” explains Tylor Marquis, Information Technology Systems manager at Gloucester Public Schools.

Change Your Latitude The combination of great food and a unique environment make Latitude 43 special Article Samantha Porter | Photography Provided
G
loucester’s Latitude 43 is a restaurant bursting with creative architecture, jaw-dropping artwork and outstanding food. With a 16foot octopus suspended in the center of the restaurant, floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the working harbor, and an oversized deck, Latitude 43 allows guests to dine on seafood favorites literally over the ocean. Latitude 43’s coastal cuisine highlights fresh, local seafood with creative flair. Start with the Latitude mussels with leeks, garlic, fennel, white wine and butter or the calamari, which can be made “Asian style” with orange, cilantro, toasted sesame seeds and a spicy glaze. Entrée favorites include seared scallops with truffle mushroom cream, fingerling potatoes, Brussels

sprouts and a red wine glaze; and apple glazed salmon with cranberry and apple chutney, sweet potatoes and rainbow Swiss chard. If you’re looking for something a little more traditional, the baked haddock and fried clams are not to be missed. The focal point of the restaurant is definitely the sushi pit that occupies the middle of the dining room, where sushi chefs turn out award-winning sushi on a nightly basis. The contemporary style sushi changes regularly, with options like the B.L.T. spicy yellowtail topped with basil, preserved lemon and tuna; and the hot rock with Kobe beef, salmon and yellowtail with sweet chili sauce, sesame ginger and spicy mayo. The restaurant boasts a cocktail program that utilizes fresh, seasonal ingredients to make refreshing drinks that are worth the trip alone. The aptly named list includes standouts like
the Good Harbor Beach Bum that is made with gold tequila and coconut rum, tumbled with pineapple, orange and cranberry juices; and the Mediterranean Mule with vodka, fresh lime juice and rosemary syrup topped with ginger beer. There is also an impressive wine list, sake and several beers on draft. In the winter, you can eat fireside in the intimate lounge that occupies the front of the restaurant. The fireplace itself is made out of Gloucester granite, which was mined right on Cape Ann and is just one of the ecofriendly materials found in the green-focused dining room. Other touches include salvaged materials like a rescue boat hull that was restored and now hangs above the restaurant’s open kitchen. Right down the hall is Minglewood Tavern - THE spot for live music in Gloucester. On any given weekend you can catch some great music from the area’s favorite bands like Soul Rebel Project and The Runaround. With more than 20 beers on tap, its own cocktail list and menu of tavern favorites like the Nacho Pile, delicious Tater Skins and BBQ Chicken Pizza, Minglewood has a personality all its own. The combination of Latitude 43 and Minglewood Tavern creates an evening out all under one roof, something completely unique on Cape Ann and perfect for those cooler October nights when you don’t want to bundle up between dinner and your next stop. Going Green The Green Cocoon offers sustainable insulation options Article Nicholas Pierce | Photography Provided
M
ore than seven years ago, Jim Materkowski and Peter Strattner formed The Green Cocoon. At the time, ecofriendly building was coming to the forefront. The two friends flew out west to train and learn about spray foam products. Upon returning, they began the company from scratch in the town where they grew up. They wanted to keep close to home and get their start in the residential communities in Salisbury and the North Shore. Strattner was the one who came up with The Green Cocoon name, and it was a stroke of genius. Insulation is the “cocoon” that wraps everyone’s home in order to retain heat and energy. The company’s mission is to be a leader in the industry and raise awareness about green living. Thus, The Green Cocoon brand was born. 14
Cape Ann Lifestyle | October 2014
The company’s first job was right down the street from its current office on Ring’s Island in Salisbury. Now, the company offers a variety of insulation products including soy spray foam, cellulose and denim insulation, and it does both residential and commercial projects. Over the years, The Green Cocoon added these different products because of customer requests on different jobs. When a customer asked for cellulose insulation, the team obtained the necessary machinery and trained on the product so they could fulfill the customer’s request. The company typically works on residential buildings. These projects can last from a day to a full month, depending on the scope of work. And since most of the work is from referrals, business is definitely growing. You can see the company’s big blue truck everywhere. In July of 2014, the company completed more than 40 different jobs. As a small local company, The Green Cocoon is all about customer service. Each person is heavily invested in the success of their organization and seeing the big picture. The company’s people are committed to treating each and every house as if they were working on their own mother’s home. That commitment really shows in how they go about their work every single day. Some of the more memorable projects The Green Cocoon has completed have been spraying the insulation for two Certified Passive Houses. A Certified Passive House is a design process that involves extremely energy efficient standards and results in a building that requires very little energy for heating or cooling. As they say at The Green Cocoon, “You could heat this house by lighting a match.” The company’s commitment to being green has also lead to a breakthrough with commercial jobs. It is currently work-

ing a large project in Portsmouth, N.H., the 233 Vaughan project, a large, mixed, high-performance building with geothermal heating and cooling. The push towards energy efficiency is greater than ever, so The Green Cocoon has ample opportunity in front of it. As energy codes continue to be updated, customers and contractors are turning to spray foam more and more frequently in an effort to be more sustainable. Ideally, the company would like to expand and open a second site, but without sacrificing standards for quality. In spite of all the focus on eco-friendly living, it can be difficult for individual people to “go green.” Many do not understand that it’s an investment in a certain lifestyle. The Green Cocoon helps prepare their customers for this as it takes on every job. Very often, people will get sticker shock when they see the cost of spray foam insulation. But the company tells people to think big picture and to calculate how much they will save on energy and utilities every month. By using the products that The Green Cocoon offers, customers can effectively cut a home’s utility expenses by up to 50 percent. That’s a whole lot of green.

Cleaning Up Hiring a “Maid” is no longer a luxury. Resources and tips for helping keep your home in ship shape. Article Nicholas Pierce
K
eeping a home clean and spruced up can be a big job. When it comes to cleaning up and enlisting some help, trust and quality are important factors. One company to consider is The Maids. Matt Donnelly has owned and operated The Maids North Shore and Greater Boston since 1995. The Maids is a local, family-owned company, offering its residential cleaning services throughout the Cape Ann, North Shore and Boston area. Plus, the company is a five-time “Best of Boston” winner from Boston Magazine. Q: How did you get started with The Maids? A: We wanted to start a service-oriented business where we could work with a diverse group of customers. We looked around at different business opportunities, and then met with The Maids. Their goals matched our goals for the North Shore. So we signed on. We started in 1995 with no employees and no customers. We’re coming up on our 20th anniversary, and we now have more than 100 employees and more than 1,000 recurring customers. Business has been great.
16
Cape Ann Lifestyle | October 2014
Q: What are some of the most gratifying aspects of serving your customers in Cape Ann? A: Over the last few years, we’ve really strived to become a more of an integral part of the community. We partnered with the Cleaning for a Reason Foundation to offer free cleaning services for individuals undergoing cancer treatments. We also became a supporter of Making Strides Against Cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and we are an official sponsor for the walks in Boston. In fact, we have a raffle starting right now. If an individual raises $300 or more in the Making Strides walk, they can be entered in the raffle. The winner will receive free cleaning services for a year. Q: What is the typical type of client you work with? A: We work with such a wide variety of people, from young families to older families. And they all have different lifestyles. Some are working, some have kids with a lot of activities, and some people are very involved in the community. Cleaning services have traditionally been seen as a luxury and it’s really not. Everyone today is just so busy. We’re there to take something off our clients’ plates and give them some time back.
Q: What services do you offer? A: We have our core recurring cleaning services, which is very popular. We also provide move-in/move-out cleanings, for families moving in or out of a new home. One of the pieces of our business that is growing right now is the pre-market cleaning, that’s becoming very popular. We offer a deep clean as people prepare to put their house on the market. Many people and real estate agents in Cape Ann and elsewhere have taken advantage of this service as it can make a big difference for open houses. Q: How frequently do you recommend clients have their homes cleaned? A: It really depends on the size and budget. Most use our recurring cleaning service every two weeks. But some people choose to have cleaning services every week, some once a month. It depends on the traffic in the home, if people entertain guests frequently, have pets, travel. A lot of people will increase their service around the holidays. In Cape Ann, most people will increase their service during the summer because they have more guests coming to stay. It’s interesting to see how different neighborhoods will peak at different times.
Q: What recommendations do you make to your customers as they prepare for fall and winter? A: My pet peeve is any build-up on chrome fixtures especially in the bathroom or kitchen. Use a small brush to get into the nooks and crannies; it can lengthen the life of those fixtures. Otherwise the build up of deposits will deteriorate the chrome. It may sound cosmetic but makes a big difference. Q: Tell me about your team. A: It’s absolutely critical to have continuity in our workforce. They know our customers; they know what needs to be done in the homes. We owe our success to the maturity of our team. Over half of our team in the field has been with us for more than five years. In fact, one of our managers in Cape Ann just celebrated her 15-year anniversary. Q: Any other cleaning tips & tricks? A: Yes. Hire The Maids. For more information, visit TheMaidsMa.com and MakingStridesWalk.org/BostonMa.

Ruth Hamill’s paintings strive to capture the feeling of the natural world. Article Eric Slack | Photography provided
A
t her studio in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Ruth Hamill loves to make a mess. Painting in oils and encaustic, Hamill says creating her art can get dirty, and even be a little dangerous. But Hamill’s work brings landscapes and seascapes to life in a way that has allowed her experimental approach to dazzle collectors and critics alike. “I have been painting and showing out of my studio for almost a decade, and I’ve lived in Manchester a little longer then that,” Hamill says. “In the past year, I’ve seen some additional success and gotten into some galleries in other parts of country.” Hamill’s work has been part of group shows juried by curators of the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) Boston, the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, Jersey City Museum, and the Nassau County Museum of Art in New Jersey. She has been featured in group shows from New York to Washington state. 18

Her work is represented at Charleston, S.C.’s Atrium Gallery; Chicago Art Source Gallery; Stowe, Vt.’s Green Mountain Gallery; and Tiverton, R.I.’s Gallery 4. Hamill was also a guest artist at The Woodstock Gallery, Woodstock, Vt. in 2014, and she was recently accepted into a national show at Cortile gallery in Provincetown. In the recent past, Hamill has received a VSC Artist Grant to the Vermont Studio Center and was accepted into residency twice at the Tin Shop in Breckenridge, Colo. She is also a winner of the local Crane Estate Art Show’s People’s Choice Award. Hamill is comfortable working in a number of mediums. One technique she has used involves pouring diluted oil paints onto an unprimed canvas. This allowed her to bring the horizon over the sea to life, as well as to capture mountain
peaks outside during her residency in Breckenridge, Colo. Hamill also uses the encaustic, or hot wax, medium to allow waves to explode from her canvas. At times, she combines traditional oils, encaustic and experimental oil painting. “Encaustic is a medium that lends itself to landscape interpretations throughout the seasons,” Hamill says. “My main focus is on the emotions that you get being at the shore. It can be messy and cumbersome, but I like it because it is very dynamic and has great depth and translucency.” Because the medium works so well for depictions of the sea, Hamill has spent many hours working on her At the Shore collection. It is a series of seascape paintings, full of rolling waves, spraying foam and the various blues, greens, whites and reds that are so familiar to anyone who has gazed out into the ocean. “I’ve spent years studying the waves,
“The key for me is figuring out what can I do with the materials to take it to the next level and bring out the emotions of being at the water’s edge,” Hamill says. “I have to let go and let nature help me create the painting.”
“The key for me is figuring out what can I do with the materials to take it to the next level and bring out the emotions of being at the water’s edge,” Hamill says. “I have to let go and let nature help me create the painting. The work of the local artist’s who have come before me inspires me, and I am really excited about the work I am doing and want to keep pushing myself.”
and the work is reflective of happy days at Singing Beach and beaches in Gloucester and Rockport,” Hamill says. “Getting out to the beach is important so I can work intuitively and expressively when I am back in the studio.” Having a professional background in journalism, graphic design and public relations helps Hamill to navigate the business of being an artist. But her passion lies in creating work that provides something special through painting that goes beyond what you get in a photograph.

Reviving a Classic Bringing new life to the picturesque Summer Hill coastal retreat in Manchester Article Bethany Tomich | Photography Michael Lee & Andrew Swaine

long the shore in Manchester, next to Coolidge Reservation and nestled along the Cape Ann coast, is a small hamlet of newly constructed homes. The classically deigned Summer Hill homes combine expert craftsmanship and sustainable living. Entering the Summer Hill community is breathtaking; each home is unique with manicured grounds lush with plants and trees. Reminiscent of Cape Ann’s resort-retreat history, Summer Hill marries New England charm with modern sensibility. On the former property of one of the Coolidge Family estates, Summer Hill is built on three acres and surrounded by 11 acres of conservation land.

The homes, six of which are completed with another six still under construction, are positioned around a rolling center green and are situated to provide privacy and access to the surrounding woodlands and a private, deeded path to Magnolia Beach. “It is important for us to build homes with attention to detail,” says Windover Construction President Lee Dellicker. “One or two of these details seem small, but put together, they create an incredible impact.” Each home is state-of-the-art from insulation to amenities. The exterior of each home features painted white cedar shingles and clapboards. The homes’ roofs feature copper, galvanized or painted aluminum designed to coordinate with the exterior palette of each home. Carriage-style garage doors complement the style and lead into a two-car garage and mudroom. The open-concept three- and four-bedroom homes range in size from 2,700 square feet to more than 4,000 square feet. Each home features fourinch white oak hardwood floors, traditional New England-style interior trim including crown moulding throughout. “All of the houses are state-of-the-art,” Dellicker says. “We built extremely energy efficient homes. The building envelope is so tight that we customized the mechanical systems to provide humidification through the winter and infuse fresh air throughout. We used energy saving technologies throughout the homes. You can feel the quality of the homes as you walk through them. By marrying each detail, we’ve been able to create not only energy efficient homes, but a sustainable community.”
The first-floor master suites are spacious with customized walkin closets and generous master baths with heated floors. The dining and living areas feature four-inch white oak hardwood floors. The gas fireplace is flanked by a custom wood mantel and stone fireplace surround. Doors from the living area open to a beautiful three-season porch that adjoins a spacious mahogany deck perfect for entertaining throughout the year. The kitchens of each home are carefully considered and equipped with custom maple cabinetry and professional grade appliances including a 36-inch cooktop, 42-inch stainless steel hood, a dishwasher and separate dish drawer, a beverage and wine refrigerator, Undertone stainless steel kitchen sink, pot filler and pull down faucet by Kohler. One floor below, large
family rooms with plenty of space for children to run and play, an office and an expertly designed man-cave offer plenty of space. The second floor guest rooms are designed for comfortable living with spacious closets, hardwood floors and beautiful moulding
and trim. The double-vanity baths include tiled floors and tub surrounds along with radiant heated floors. The attention to detail throughout each home, from construction to design, makes Summer Hill a very desirable community. Two of the homes have been staged by Timeless Interiors & Gifts of South Hamilton. Incorporating unique art and furnishings, the homes come to life. The addition of Ruth Hamill’s stunning encaustics works add dimension to the homes. Timeless Interiors attention to design-detail compliments the homes. By combining modern design, rustic beach decor, and comfortable elements, the designers’ commitment to style is evident in everything from the inviting porch, comfortable living room to the modern dining space. “The first floor of each home has a lot of functional space and large foot print, which means the second floor and basement both have ample living and storage space,” Dellicker says. “We made sure that the high-end finishes on the first floor were carried throughout the second floor and basement. Several of the homes have daylight basements with access to the backyards extending the living space.” Designed by Thad Siemasko from Siemasko & Verbridge of Beverly and constructed by the team at Windsor Construction, the 14-acre site is a stunning marriage of architecture and conservation. Summer Hill was built preserving century-old trees and unique wetlands and each home is built to be energy efficient and meet Low Impact Development Standards. The community was created through a cluster-zoning ordinance to encourage the permanent preservation of open space. Celebration Time Audi A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI competition: 25 years of Audi TDI technology Article and Photography Provided
A
udi is celebrating the 25th anniversary of TDI technology with a dynamic special edition model. The Audi A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI competition makes its potential clear. It delivers 326 horsepower, combined with a powerful 479.4 lb-ft of torque, and accelerates from zero to 62.1 mph in 5.1 seconds. With the boost function active, it can take advantage of an additional 20 horsepower, thereby briefly achieving an output of 346 horsepower. In keeping with its dynamic character, the Audi A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI competition comes with the S line sport package, which also includes lowering the body by 0.8 inches. The wheels, with their five-spoke W design, have black painted sides. At 20 inches in diameter, they look very impressive; the tire dimension is 265/35. Red brake calipers and discs in 17-inch format on the front and rear axles underscore this special edition model’s sporty character. The S line exterior package and black gloss package lend the body a dynamic elegance; there are also V6 T emblems on the 24

fenders, black exterior mirror housings and high-gloss black tailpipe trims. The special edition model is offered in Daytona Gray, Misano Red, Nardo Gray and Sepang Blue. In the style of the S line sport package, the interior of the Audi A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI competition is designed in black. The sport seats are upholstered in fine Valcona leather in black or lunar silver and decorated with S line embossing. As an option, Audi offers the S sport seat with contrasting stitching in Misano Red or Agate Gray; in this case, the armrests are also upholstered in leather with contrast stitching. The inlays consist of aluminum and Beaufort wood in black – an especially high-grade metal/wood combination. The doorsill trims feature “quattro” logos. The shift paddles behind the multifunction sport steering wheel can be used to control the eight-speed tiptronic manually. It was 25 years ago that the company first unveiled the TDI engine, which has since gone on to become the most successful
efficiency technology on both road and racetrack. Since that time, Audi has achieved worldwide sales of around 7.5 million automobiles with a TDI engine, and at the Le Mans 24 Hours a TDI-powered model with the four rings has been first over the finishing line on eight occasions since 2006. With the present-day TDI clean diesel, Audi has reduced pollutant emissions by 98 percent over the past 25 years. Over the same period, the diesel engine’s power and torque
have doubled relative to its displacement. Since 2000 alone, Audi has cut the average fuel consumption of the TDI fleet by around one-third. Audi has reached another milestone of efficiency with the new generation of the 3.0 TDI, the bestseller in the large model lines. It will be making its debut in the updated A7 Sportback, which will go on sale in its first markets this fall. With an increased output of 272 horsepower, the new 3.0 TDI is even cleaner and achieves in the A7 Sportback 13 percent better fuel efficiency than its predecessor. This special edition model comes packed with all the features that have already gone into the revised A7 model series. They include LED headlights as standard as well as turn signals with dynamic display. As an option, Audi can supply the Matrix LED headlights, the even more powerful MMI Navigation plus and further developed driver assistance systems such as night vision assist.

Beautiful Inside & Out How showing an old home some new love created a stunning new view. article and photography provided
D
id you know that windows are the only home improvement product that can aesthetically influence both the inside and the outside of your home? And that it is fully possible to upgrade the appearance of your home by adding new windows while preserving the historic beauty of your home? Well, it’s true! Just ask the owners of this stunning home in Newton, Mass. When they purchased this slate blue historical 1900s Philadelphia style home as a fixer upper, one of the first things they noticed was that the windows were drafty, rotted, misaligned and very difficult to open and close. Obviously, this had to be fixed—and due to the home’s status in the Preservation Trust— it had to be fixed the right way. But where do they start? They were on a tight deadline to get the house move-in ready, so they needed to find a professional window installation company that would not only repair the structure of the home and improve its energy efficiency, but also preserve the historic aesthetic of the home. That sounds like a big challenge, but thanks to Coastal Windows & Exteriors, these new homeowners were able to install new windows that surpassed all of their expectations and deadlines.

And that’s also the hottest place in the summer? Coastal’s Triple Pane windows with extraordinarily dense Krypton gas are so energy efficient that they eliminate hot and cold spots and drafts in your home. Every room in your home will be noticeably more comfortable. Replacing new windows also allows for a quieter, more relaxing home.

What’s Cooking foods. But keep in mind, offering more nutritious food does not mean you can eat endless quantities.” Tips for your tailgate menu
The rules of thumb on better-for-you tailgate side dishes are that baked is always better than deep-fried, and homemade recipes allow you to control the ingredients. Paolillo offers these tips to help consumers pick tailgate foods that not only fill up hungry sports fans, but also add nutrition to the fun: • Choose lean grilling options such as skinless chicken breast (NuVal 57) or hamburgers made with 95 percent lean ground beef (NuVal 57). Skip calorie-rich condiments and boost the flavor of your burger with toppings which earn high NuVal scores like: NuVal 100 - mushrooms, grilled onions, fresh pineapple, jalapenos, and roasted red peppers; or NuVal 88 - avocado.
Tailgate Tips That Add Flavor, Nutrition S
oon, parking lots of colleges, high schools and professional stadiums across the nation will be filled with fans gearing up for another sporting season - and the tailgating celebrations that go hand-in-hand. Die-hard tailgaters have come to revel in the culinary pride of putting together the best and most creative barbecue and tailgate grub. While traditional menus feature staples such as hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans and cold salads, tailgate “chefs” are now only limited by their imaginations. However, traditional tailgating fare hasn’t been high on the nutrition scale, and this pre-game celebrating is a classic example of food-centric entertainment in which people unintentionally become less conscious of the calories they consume. Score big with better-for-you options
Approaching your tailgating food shopping and preparation with slight changes can make a big nutritional impact, allowing you to enjoy both the game and the good food that goes with it. One tool to simplify your tailgating prep is the NuVal(r) Nutritional Scoring System. Many grocery retailers are now providing scores (on a scale of 1 to 100) on the price tag to help guide shoppers of all ages toward more nutritious food choices - the higher the score, the higher the nutritional quality of the food or beverage. “Contrary to what many people think, celebrating before the big game doesn’t have to mean ditching sensible eating. Food can be fun, flavorful and better for you - even the snacks,” said Marisa Paolillo, a NuVal nutritionist. “It begins with smarter choices at the grocery store, and simple swaps for some of your favorite 28

• Ditch pre-packaged marinades for endless homemade and fresh options. Combine herbs such as basil, rosemary or dill with citrus fruits, spices, onion and garlic with a little olive oil. • Grilled corn on the cob is the perfect grill buddy, and it’s easy. With a NuVal Score of 100, fresh corn on the cob can be cooked on the grill either wrapped in its own husks (more dramatic) or in aluminum foil. Add flavor with herbs and spices before roasting. • Use whole wheat pasta for macaroni salad, and add plenty of veggies and a meat or bean as a protein source to boost the nutritional value. Replace heavy pre-packaged creamy dressings, which often contain hidden sugar and sodium, with homemade vinaigrettes to control the ingredients. • Black beans and corn, with NuVal 100 scores, add nutrients and a Southwest flair to guacamole and salsa, and they’re great for dipping tortilla chips and bite-sized vegetables. • Shrimp or chicken skewers, with NuVal scores averaging 57, are a great protein alternative to traditional hamburgers and hotdogs, especially when prepared with chunks of onions, peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, zucchini, squash, and sweet peppers (all scoring NuVal 100). • Add water to the cooler to keep tailgaters hydrated. Fresh lemon and lime add a citrus flair. Need more tips? Find a participating store near you at nuval.com/location.

Parting Thoughts
Fall on Cape Ann Words Mary Alice Cookson
I
n the early 1990s, my husband and I moved from Los Angeles back to the East Coast. We rented the upstairs of a grand old house in Rockport’s Pigeon Cove. I spent a year in that house where nearly every window revealed the expansive panoramic backdrop of the sea. Each day I took in its sights, sounds and smells. Being pregnant with my first child heightened my senses. The sea was my backyard, and the rhythm of the waves matched the tumbling life inside my expanding belly. The setting could not have been more perfect for a new life. But then it was…Then it became fall on Cape Ann. Fall showed its colors shyly at first then progressively became bolder like a spectacular sunset. Pious white steeples were surrounded in yellows, golds, oranges and reds. Evergreens lent balance to an ever-changing scene reminding me that life’s only constant is that life changes. Crispness came to the air. The beach-going crowds of Rockport and Gloucester began to thin out. The area returned to its off-season quiet, even as schools and activities resumed. The locals ventured back into town. I got to know my neighbors through friendly chats about my impending motherhood, with all its uncertainties, as well as talk of garden clean-outs, end-of-season boutique bargains and where to go for the best seafood or to see the prettiest autumn vistas. Upon the advice of a friend, I visited Halibut Point State Park. There, after emerging from a wooded path, I had my first glimpse of a quarry. Its impressive depth and glass-like stillness – and the spectacular color above and below – challenged

me to put my fears aside and rest upon its granite ledges, which I did in awe and reverence. Cape Ann’s hidden quarries, charming lighthouses and the warmth of the townspeople filled me with an expectation that all the seasons of my life were going to pass as they should, just as Cape Ann had weathered storms for hundreds of years and grown stronger in character. As temperatures cooled, I traded shorts and t-shirts for jeans and sweaters and began taking evening strolls, often with a walking buddy. We crunched through leaves from Pigeon Cove into the heart of Rockport and back many nights. Eventually we switched to fleece jackets topped with windbreakers and then reluctantly to ski jackets. Earthy smells of fall and an occasional fire from a chimney summoned up autumns of my childhood, making me feel young and vulnerable. At other times, I seemed to be at one with the wind and sea and drew upon their strength. Twenty-one falls have passed since the year I lived in Pigeon Cove. My daughter, all grown, has Cape Ann in her blood just as surely as any native. She and I enjoy clam chowder, browsing through the shops on Bearskin Neck, taking walks at Good Harbor Beach, bike rides and drives around Rocky Neck, whale watching and skipping from rock to rock at Halibut Point. Just like the many artists who have taken out easels and pallets to try and do justice to the famous Motif No. 1, I’m drawn to Cape Ann; but capturing its beauty in mere words is not 100-percent possible. You really have to see it for yourself. When you do, like me, you will probably want to return again and again, like waves returning to shore.
