Before everything gets crazy and we start shopping for all the people on our gift list, we want to take this time to pause and reflect. This year has been a wonderful journey with all of you, and we are grateful that we were able to launch this magazine and connect with you and your family every month. Thank you for sharing your stories and for reading ours. Thank you for supporting the local businesses in our community, as without them, this magazine would not be possible. Many of us found comfort in our pets this year. My border collie rescues, Cooper and Peyton, are a constant source of companionship, amusement, and unconditional love for our family. This month we are proud to highlight four local animal rescue organizations and the dedicated volunteers that just might be caring for the next member of your family. DONNY LUCAS IS A CHAMPION BODYBUILDER AND PERSONAL TRAINER WITH DECADES OF EXPERIENCE IN THE FITNESS INDUSTRY. At his “Underground Fitness” gym in North Canton, Lucas trains anyone from professional athletes to those simply interested in a healthier lifestyle. Here are his tips for navigating the Thanksgiving dinner table with your health in mind. Start your holiday festivities early and plan to enjoy several smaller meals throughout the day. Prioritize greens at each meal so you’re filling up on nutritious food first. Lucas says it’s not tryptophan in turkey that makes you sleepy, but the blood sugar spike from eating too many carbs is the real culprit. Avoid that scenario by loading up on lean turkey, and perhaps go easy on the sweet potato casserole. Finally, try the three free-weight exercises on the next page to help keep yourself in shape throughout the holiday season. Visit donnylucastraining.com to learn more, or call 330.933.4708 to schedule a class.

+ BASIL ASIAN BISTRO

ROAD TRIP (CONTINUED)

There are plenty of delicious dinner options in downtown Canton, but Basil Asian Bistro is one of the best. The upscale Asian fusion restaurant, housed in a brick building next door to the Canton Palace Theatre, has an expansive menu inspired by Pacific and Southeastern Asian cuisine. Owner Tony Ly has crafted a menu with 23 stir-fry options, specialty sushi, fried rice, Thai curry dishes, noodles and more. If you feel overwhelmed by all the delicious choices, you can stick to Basil’s house favorite, the coconut spaghetti, which is Mandarin egg noodles tossed in a mild and sweet coconut sauce with shrimp, pork and vegetables. The service at Basil is always on point. Friendly and efficient, they know the menu and are quick to make recommendations that match your tastes. The restaurant, which opened in 2014, is located at 585 Market Ave, North. See the full menu at basilasianrestaurant.com.

After dinner drinks? Walk across the street to 410 Lounge, where the bar’s mixologists can make just about anything you’re looking for. 410 Lounge has been under new ownership since early June. Its decor now has a “nostalgic theme” focused on Hollywood entertainers from the 1940s,

remind patrons of “wonderful childhood memories.” As for drinks, the most popular on the menu are margaritas, martinis and the old fashioned. “Our chocolate and dessert martinis have a slight edge over the rest,” Payandeh said. If you’re really feeling adventurous, opt for the Sazerac, America’s oldest-known cocktail. This close cousin to the old-fashioned is simultaneously soft and bold, smooth and brash, and so unmistakably New Orleans, the city where is was invented. Payandeh soon hopes to be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily to offer a lunchtime menu of flatbreads, happy hour cocktails, and after-dinner dessert drinks. 410 Lounge is located at 410 Market Ave. North. + SAFE TRAVELS

Although parking is plentiful in Downtown Canton, there is a convenience factor of being dropped at the doorstep of your destination. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft coordinate an ample supply of vetted drivers in the area. Â Since its introduction to Stark County in 2014, popularity of the service continues to grow. Statistics show more than one third of adults have called for a ride using this technology. With a just a few taps on your smartphone, you can summon a private driver like royalty. Even on a busy Friday night, you should expect to see your car in 15 minutes or less. And while the cost will vary depending on your origination, expect to pay less than $20 for safe, reliable transportation to and from. So, enjoy one last cocktail and begin planning your next night out on the town!

Finding Fall Homes For Furry Friends ARTICLE CHRIS WATSON | PHOTOGRAPHY TERRY FRAVEL

Canton Lifestyle | November 2020

IT’S CERTAINLY SAD TO THINK THAT A FURRY FRIEND COULD EVER FIND THEMSELVES WITHOUT A HOME. However, it’s positively heartwarming to remember that our community is filled with kind, dedicated people who donate their time and resources to rescuing and relocating castaway companions. These shelters and rescue organizations aren’t simply havens for neglected pets and origins for new life-

long friendships, however. They also serve an important role in society. They reduce the number of stray and unwanted animals roaming the streets, improve the overall health of our pet population with veterinary connections, and educate the public on the importance of responsible pet ownership. These are four such local organizations that are committed to providing a safe space for outcast animals.

Friends of Stark Pound Friends of Stark Pound works with the Stark County Dog Warden Department to reduce the population of homeless dogs by funding spay/ neuter procedures and veterinary care. They also educate the public on the importance of adoption and responsible pet ownership. Dog Warden volunteer Margie Serri and facility employee Mike Evans unofficially started the organization by transporting dogs and puppies from Stark County to states with a higher rescue dog demand. Volunteers flocked to the cause, adoption numbers increased, and in 2008 Friends of Stark Pound became a tax-exempt charity. In 2013 the organization was able to fund an in-shelter veterinary clinic, ensuring that all dogs were vaccinated, heartworm tested and spayed/neutered before joining their new families. Recently their March “Mutt Madness” fundraiser raised over $20,000 to help stock the clinic. Their efforts have transformed the “high-kill” Stark County Dog Pound of the past into a statistical no-kill shelter. Their board members say, “this clinic and the resulting increase in adoptions have been a dream come true for Friends of Stark Pound.” Those interested in getting involved can email friendsofstarkpound@gmail.com.

Stark County Humane Society The Stark County Humane Society is on a mission to protect unwanted animals from cruelty and neglect. These animals are provided with attention and shelter while they look forward to a permanent and caring home. Every animal that is taken in is given a booster vaccine, heartworm or Felv/Fiv test, microchip, dewormer, and a one-year rabies vaccine before being offered for adoption. They work in conjunction with the Dog Warden and cover all of Stark County, where they’ve maintained a presence for over a century. In 2020 alone, the Humane Society has taken in almost 2,400 animals and successfully adopted out 1,841. Learn more about the organization or how to become a volunteer by visiting starkhumane.org

Second Chance for Animals Second Chance for Animals is devoted to rescuing homeless, neglected and abandoned animals. They provide veterinary care, spay/neuter animals, and find them responsible and loving homes. In the rare case that an animal cannot be adopted it will never be euthanized, but instead stay in foster care indefinitely. The organization has been performing this service since it was established in 1991. They primarily help local pets, but also have rescued many from surrounding states. Second Chance for Animals is currently composed of twelve volunteers working around their own full-time jobs. They rely on volunteer foster homes for their animals, so anyone wanting to volunteer or fill out a pre-adoption questionnaire can contact them at secondchance4animalsohio@gmail.com.

weddin g soup papa g y ros st yle ITALIAN SOUP WITH MEDITERRANEAN FLARE! ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TERRY FRAVEL

26

Canton Lifestyle | November 2020

wedd i n g soup PAPA GYROS PRESIDENT, LAMBROS PAXOS SHARES THEIR FAMILY RECIPE FOR HEARTY WEDDING SOUP WITH A LITTLE INFLUENCE FROM MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE. This tasty soup has a rich, flavorful broth loaded with tasty proteins and greens. Papa Gyros style utilizes rice for the starch, but feel free to substitute for your favorite pasta!

i n g re d ient s + 4 cups chicken broth + 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil + 1 cup fresh or frozen chopped spinach + 2 tablespoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice + 1 cup pre-cooked homemade or frozen mini meatballs + 8 oz. fresh boneless, skinless chicken breast + 1/2 cup extra long-grain rice or substitute your favorite pasta + salt and pepper to taste

d i rec t ion s 1. In a large pot, bring your chicken broth to a rolling boil. 2. Add spinach, meatballs and rice. Turn heat down to a medium simmer. 3. While your soup is getting married, cut chicken breast into cubes, pat dry with a paper towel and set aside. Next, heat up a medium frying pan and add the extra virgin olive oil to a very low smoke. Add chicken breast. Lightly season with salt and pepper to taste. 4. Once your chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165˚ remove from the frying pan and add into the soup pot. 5. The rice will need approximately 25 minutes from the point you added it into the soup to finish cooking. If you substituted pasta, the cooking time varies, but 6-10 minutes is the normal cooking time for the pasta to be al dente. If substituting pasta, you’ll want a total cook time of at least 25 minutes to ensure all ingredients are cooked thoroughly. 6. Lastly, turn off the heat and add your fresh squeezed lemon juice. If you add this during the cooking process, it will cook the flavor out, so we suggest adding at the very end with no heat to retain optimum flavor. 7. Enjoy! CityLifestyle.com/Canton

front door area with potted mums, coleus, kale, ivy and sweet potato vine dotted with pumpkins to act as a natural transition between the spaces. Here are some of Josette’s favorite things to add a sumptuous fall feel to your space.

1:

FABULOUS FAUX FURS. Richly hued faux furs can add a dash of texture and glamour to a space. 2:

CANDLES. Josette loves Voluspa® candles for their maximum scent and beautifully designed glassware. Choose colors and scents to match the season.

PILLOWS. Simple and sophisticated is the way to go. Favorite brands include Cloud 9 and D.V. Kap. 4:

FLOOR JARS. Add greens to decorative jars to soften up a corner, or fill one with sprayed-gold stems or colorful leaves for visual interest. Pottery is good in these spaces, too. 5:

TABLETOP ACCENTS. Accent a coffee table, end table or bookcase with decorative bowls or seasonal flowers. Silk versions work, too, and last longer.
