Kirklen, 19, is the third MiraCostan to earn the recognition in the past four years. She prepped at The Classical

A Carlsbad Love Story DAVID AND ANN KULCHIN

W
hen David Kulchin came home one day in 1978 and told his wife Ann he had accepted a job with Hughes Aircraft in Carlsbad, she thought they were moving from their home in Saratoga, California to New Mexico. The only Carlsbad she’d heard of was Carlsbad Caverns! Of course, neither one realized at the time that the move would be much more than just a physical relocation, but rather the beginning of a nearly four-decade relationship with the city they would come to love; a city that would grow and mature and become known, thanks in large part to the couple’s community advocacy and volunteerism over those many years, as the “ jewel of north county.” Ann and David’s story begins in Brooklyn, New York where they spent their childhoods. Despite the geographic proximity, they came from very different backgrounds. David and his brother, the sons of European immigrants, grew up in a poor Orthodox Jewish household, while Ann, an only child, lived in a wealthier section of the borough where she attended an all-girl Catholic school. They met in an art class at the University of Miami in 1953, where they were both studying to become teachers. Six months 18

later they married and their 63-year journey together began. That journey would take them from the east coast to the west, as David’s career evolved from teaching to human resources. While living in Saratoga, Ann got involved in politics for the first time: she helped a friend run for Santa Clara County Supervisor and he won. Ann ran his field offices. When they moved to Carlsbad, Ann jumped into the political arena: in 1980, she ran for Carlsbad city council. Through an “old-fashioned” grass roots campaign, Ann raised $3,000 and defeated an incumbent. She successfully won her city council seat in eight elections and for many years was the only council representative south of Palomar Airport Road. Ann served on the Carlsbad city council for 32 years, retiring in 2012. During her tenure, she was instrumental in the growth of the Dove library, the project she’s most proud of. The coaster was built during the time she was chair of the North County Transit District; Ann was involved in selecting the trains. As Chair of the Shoreline Preservation Committee, she lobbied for construction of the mile-long coastal sea wall along Carlsbad Blvd. Ann helped in every way to make Carlsbad the community it is today. Meanwhile, David was also making his mark. In fact, his advocacy and hard work led to his being named
Carlsbad Citizen of the Year in 2013. One of the most significant accomplishments for the Kulchins was raising $1.2 million to build the branch of the Boys & Girls Club in Bressi Ranch that opened in 2011. There was a need for the new branch and the community responded to that need because “People not only give to people, but they give to worthwhile causes.” During his long tenure on the Boys & Girls Club’s board of directors, David held many roles, including board president. He currently holds the highest honor of all: Lifetime Honorary Board Member. These days, the Kulchins relish their active retirement - they enjoy watching their eight grandchildren flourish. For the first time, they’re both involved with the same organization, the Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas Community Advisory Board; through the Circle of Life service organization, which Ann chairs, they work to raise funds to support the hospital. In 2014, Ann and David wrote a book titled Aren’t We Lucky! A Carlsbad Love Story. They dedicated the book to their family, to help their children and grandchildren understand their lives. When asked what advice she would give to all young people, Ann says, “I would tell them my favorite quote from Maya Angelou: People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Not only is the book about Ann and David’s life story, their love for each other, their children and their grandchildren but also the story of their love for their home—Carlsbad, the community that continues to benefit today from all they’ve given over the past 38 years. How lucky for Carlsbad that Ann and David didn’t end up in New Mexico!

each volleyball is synonymous with California. Since 1996, when Women’s Beach Volleyball was introduced to the Olympics, Californians have represented, achieving medal status in 4 of 5 games including three time Gold medal champions, Misty May and Kerry Walsh-Jennings. If the Olympic Games are any indication, California is where the world class volleyball players are found! In fact, Lauren Fendrick, one of four Team USA Volleyball players taking the court at the Olympics in Rio this month, grew up right here in Carlsbad. Moving to Carlsbad from Escondido at age 10, Fendrick attended Carlsbad High School where she excelled at several sports including tennis, basketball, softball and golf. She maintained a 4.74 GPA (on a 4.0 standard) while earning both the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award by the North P h o to grap hy F County Times in 1998-1999 and the All-Academic I VB Team Captain by the San Diego Union Tribune in 1998. At age 14, her best friend convinced her to quit tennis to play indoor volleyball and it was love at first serve. With her mom driving her to practices and tournaments, and under the tutelage of coach Tom Ranney, Fendrick was soon averaging ten kills per match across three varsity seasons. Numerous accolades, academically as well as athletically, earned her a full scholarship to UCLA. Fendrick played volleyball and softball, earning All-American distinctions in both. 20

For many athletes, the Olympics are the goal of their career. But for Fendrick, it wasn’t until she was named an alternate for the US Olympic Team in 2012 that it seemed within reach. “I was always striving to get better, to grow as an athlete, but those are day-to-day goals. I certainly thought it would be amazing to go to the Olympics, but it took me a while to realize it was a realistic possibility.” Together with Brook Sweat, they form a team that maintains a sold relationship both on and off the court; they work together as one unit while playing and are able to communicate their offense and defense systems and strategies seamlessly. “Brooke is a great defender who makes these amazing reads in

In 2003, remembering beach volleyball from her CHS PE class, taught by Tobyn Knudsen, Fendrick transitioned to the sand. She went on the play in both AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals) and FIVB (Federation Internationale de Volleyball) events, racking up top-ten finishes by 2008. Fendrick simultaneously worked on her J.D. from USC, passing the bar in 2011.

the back-court. This really complements my game as a midsized blocker,” shares Fendrick. Beach volleyball requires athleticism as well as technical skill. Fendrick praises her strength coach Anthony Darmiento for preparing her for tournaments. Beyond the physical game, however, she says, “There are aspects of beach volleyball that are like a chess match.” Between plays, her analytical mindset helps her read opponents' tendencies as well as keep a “pulse” on the game to make any adjustments. During plays though, she feels that it’s best to be present in the moment and not preconceive moves; the cerebral mindset has to turn off. That said, Sweat and Fendrick are able to deliver enough varied plays to keep their opponents on their toes. Not content playing her own game, Fendrick, together with her husband Andrew Fuller, a player as well as coach, created the LF Foundation. The quote on the Foundation website, “Tell me and I’ll forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I’ll understand,” speaks to the power of the knowledge that the couple wish to share with communities to foster connections and growth. They have held three successful clinics in California, Ohio, and Idaho, and look forward to many more after the Olympics. Fendrick is the ideal role model for young children. When asked what advice she might give her young fans, Fendrick says, “See yourself succeeding when you know that there’s a possibility for success, and then take a look at what actually happened and learn from it! You really have to work to trust yourself and cultivate a positive inner dialog. Don’t be afraid of failing, and believe in yourself!” LaurenFendrick.com

ways they could capitalize on their passion for San Diego’s craft beer to pursue their goals: building camaraderie amongst members and the greater community, supporting their philanthropic efforts, and providing a good time for the people of San Diego and beyond. Eventually, they formulated a plan for an event that would become the first annual Carlsbad Brewfest. And since it began in 2014, the tasting fair has continued to grow while staying true to its mission of providing fun, friendship, and funding for the charitable work of the Rotary club. The Third Annual Carlsbad Brewfest will take place Saturday, September 10. Building off their experience running local Oktoberfest events for decades, JR and Mike, the current co-chairs of the Brewfest, discovered that their brewers preferred the relaxed feel of a manageable crowd size where everyone is free to leisurely discuss and learn about the beers and the brewing process. Meanwhile, for the patrons, the organizers have worked to provide a comfortable venue with better access to shade, grass, chairs and water in addition to turning up the fun by expanding the game area to include activities like giant Jenga™, musical chairs, and flying tortilla. Their work has paid off, and the event has grown, from 400 attendees to 1000, to an expected draw for 2016 of 1500 attendees, 32 breweries (including New Belgium, Green Flash, Karl Strauss and many more), four gourmet food trucks and live music. And with every extra dollar of funding, they’ve been able to give more back to the community. As for the future of the event, JR wants to see, “First and foremost, that the craft beer industry in San Diego continues to thrive while our Carlsbad 24

uring a time of great economic turmoil about 82 years ago, North County San Diego’s first community college emerged. Founded during the Great Depression, MiraCosta Community College provided local students with the opportunity to earn a two-year college education. Today, the organization is making a tremendous impact on the local economy. According to their 2012 performance report, the local economic impact generates about $433.3 million each year, and students earn higher wages while businesses receive an increased output. “Being able to keep in touch with what’s happening and changing in education and technology is really important for us,” says Linda Kurokawa, director of the Community Education and Workforce Development program. Always looking for ways to meet the needs of the community, the organization partners with local businesses to train future employees, resulting in new employment opportunities, higher business revenue, and increased employee earnings. MiraCosta’s Community Education and Workforce Development program, located in the college’s Technology Career Institute (TCI) in Carlsbad, offers work-skill classes for any community member—traditional credit student or not—in categories ranging from health care and finance to dance and photography. Further supporting local economic development, the TCI

offers accelerated, certified job-training programs for students to gain specialized trade skills. It is a self-funded, fee-based program. Students earn certification in fields such as engineering technology, phlebotomy, veterinarian assistance, and high-threat security. More than 90 percent of TCI students are employed in their field, with about 98 percent of students finishing the program. The high retention rate is due, in part, to how quickly students can complete the program. They can fulfill the necessary 600 hours of training in just four months, compared to two years at other training programs. “We work with local businesses and high schools to identify areas that are needed for workers to enter the workforce, and also areas where students can earn a degree and get a local well-paying job,” says Cheryl Broom, director of Public & Governmental Relations, and Marketing & Communications. MiraCosta’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) assists local small businesses, providing free workshops on skills that include how to write a market plan and obtain a loan for expansion. From January to May this year, the SBDC provided 4,221 hours of business coaching and 270 workshops, resulting in 59 new business start-ups and increasing sales by $25 million. Additionally, the college’s job placement program provides students with a counselor to aid in their job search, to connect with students and provide assistance after graduation to ensure student success. “MiraCosta played an important role in helping me transition from one developing career (Emergency Medical Services) to my goal career (health policy and government affairs),” says alumnus Aaron Byzak, director of Government and Community Affairs for UC San Diego Health. Byzak obtained an AA in history and credits the college with helping him tap into his academic potential. His studies helped him obtain an internship with a California state senator’s office. “That ended up being a key component in starting my career in policy and politics,” says Byzak. Students also have the opportunity to impact the younger community through the Student Ambassador Program. About one-third of students from North County high schools go directly to this community college after graduation. “MiraCosta fed my intellectual curiosity

The values that I gained there are with me today,” says student ambassador Richard Huizar, a 2014 graduate who now studies mechanical engineering at MIT. MiraCosta maintains a close connection to local businesses. Staff members meet regularly with industry leaders to discuss their business needs and ensure students’ skill sets meet their expectations. Built in close collaboration with local biotechnology companies, the college developed an innovative biotechnology facility. They recently obtained state approval to offer a bachelor’s degree in biomanufacturing, after local industry approached the college and expressed a need for degree-certified students in that area. Their hands-on nursing programs, in partnership with hospitals such as Scripps and Tri-City, enable students to complete required nursing hours in local hospitals. As Broom says, “Our goal is—if a student comes to MiraCosta and graduates—we want them to earn a degree that will help them stay in North County San Diego and get a well-paying job.” MiraCosta.edu

T
he Mazda MX-5 (originally called the Miata) has long been the personification of driving fun and the fourth-generation 2016 model continues to be just that. The original MX-5 Miata, introduced in 1989, was the reincarnation of a British sports car and more than 950,000 have been sold worldwide. According to Mazda, the all-new 2016 is lighter, smaller, quicker and more nimble than its predecessor. The wheelbase is nearly one inch shorter and curb weight is 2,332 pounds. Mazda says that increased use of high-tensile steel and careful attention to reducing even the slightest amount of weight with every component resulted in a total weight reduction of 150 pounds. There are three models: Sport, Club and Grand Touring. Sport starts at $24,915, Club at $28,600 and Grand Touring at $30,065. The test vehicle was the Club model with the optional Brembo/BBS package of 17-inch BBS wheels and Brembo front brakes. The Club model also has a limited-slip differential on manual transmission models, Bilstein shocks, a shock tower brace and a front air dam and rear lip spoiler. The base price was $28,600. The 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine delivers 155 horsepower, 12 less than the previous model. It would seem that fewer horsepower would hurt performance but the car felt as quick and energetic as ever, helped by the lighter weight. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a six-speed automatic is optional. Fuel economy is up considerably, too. The manual transmission model is rated at 27 miles per gallon in the city and 34 on the highway. That’s exceptional. Driven vigorously, the MX-5 feels as though it is glued to your hips. The engine has been moved down and back for better handling. The steering is light and direct and the car pivots around corners so precisely that it almost feels telepathic, thanks in large
measure to a 50-50 weight distribution and low center of gravity. Slide into the MX-5 and the cockpit definitely feels small. Folks over six feet tall are likely to be cramped. The pedals are tightly grouped and getting in and out can be challenging, especially for aging enthusiasts. The stubby gearshift is next to the driver’s right hand and changing gears is as simple as rocking your wrist. Dropping the manual top is a matter of undoing a central latch and pulling it back into folded position behind the seats. It is most easily done outside of the car, but can be done from inside. On the highway, the cloth top reverberated so loudly that I could hardly stand to drive more than 65 miles per hour. The previous MX-5 was available with a power folding hard top but one is not offered on the 2016. A folding hard top would add weight but it would make the car much more suitable for highway use. Mazda’s infotainment system has a seven-inch color touchscreen display. It is operated with voice commands or a multi-function command dial on the console. Standard items include HD radio, two USB inputs, smart keyless entry, a Bosenine-speaker audio system with headrest-mounted speakers and Sirius satellite radio. The interface of the optional, dealer-installed navigation system was not nearly as intuitive as most smartphones. The MX-5 may be 26 years old but it acts like teenager. Price: The base price of the Club model is $28,600. The test car was equipped with navigation and the Brembo/BBS package of 17-inch wheels, Brembo front brakes, painted brake calipers, side sill extensions and a rear bumper skirt. The sticker price was $33,170. WARRANTY: Three years or 36,000 miles with a five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. POINT: The redesigned MX-5 still has the soul of a pure sports car. The new body is attractive, fuel economy is improved and handling is just as good as ever. COUNTERPOINT: The MX-5 is slightly smaller than the previous model and the cabin felt crowded. The cloth top is quite noisy at highway speeds.
