Editor’s Letter

Some may say that design can be vein or an unnecessary pursuit.

I

believe when it comes to making your house feel like a home, design means a multitude of things. Perhaps bringing that one-of-a-kind vintage piece of your great granddads back to life. The gem you scored at the local flea market. The time you splurged on that rug with your first bonus. You see, design is what emotionally connects us to our homes.

In Denver, we live in a place where the local flea (The Denver Flea), is hardly considered digging and diving rather the crème de la crème of artist and designers all collaborating in one space. The talent that is sprouting up here constantly blows me away, and it’s igniting. It pushes you past your discomfort to tackle something that you feared you could not, to the triumph of accomplishment. In this issue we will be featuring four designers and artists. Their level of originality is as equal to their humility, and we catch them in their raw state. We also will get to see the expertise displayed by Pratt Designs as they take us into a savvy Cherry Creek home renovation. An elevator for your car? No problem. We are fortunate to live in a place where “buying local” often means buying directly from the hands that made it. These pieces could be recycled, revived, or ReVampt. (Another local store we feature this issue.) Treasures that have stories, history, and are living on our walls. My Papa Jack passed this last October, at 96 years of age. He and my Mama Jean had timeless taste when it came to design. There was a wooden map of the United States that had resided in his office for his entire professional career. This map was headed to the dump, before I rescued it. To me, it was art. Sure, it was a little beat up, but nothing a little TLC couldn’t fix. I cherish it. The map is now one of the focal points in our living area, and what makes me feel at home. Kate Manz, Managing Editor KManz@LifestylePubs.com

Around Town 70 years after his death—to fund a new endowment in bone pathology research. When Samuel Fosdick Jones, a leading Denver physician, was retiring from both his practice and his professorship at CU in 1930, he wanted to give back to the place that had given him his “health, practice and wife,” so he established a trust to benefit bone pathology research, which at the time was an emerging specialty in medicine. The gift will benefit research in the Department of Orthopedics in perpetuity.

Economic Outlook Forum Presented by Leeds School of Business The fiftieth annual Colorado Business Economic Outlook Forum was held December 8. It is the longest-running forecast of the Colorado economy, analyzing changes that have taken place in industry sectors during the past year and looking at events and activities that will shape changes in population and employment, and in the overall economy for the coming year. The forecast calls for a gain of 61,300 jobs in 2015. All sectors of the economy are expected to grow, with the exception of Information, and the state is expected to be in the top 10 in the nation for job growth. Colorado’s unemployment rate is predicted to remain below 5 percent in 2015, which is lower than the national rate.

The Art of Upcycling Revampt Redefines “New” Article Emily O’Brien | Photography Provided

Items are sophisticated, stylish and well, cool. 20

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | February 2015

L

ooking for a wallet made from old bike inner tubes, a console table made from recycled railroad trestles or bar stools fabricated from old teak boats? What about artisan-crafted furniture and accessories that are reclaimed or recycled? If so, Revampt in Cherry Creek North is calling your name. In a world inundated with new this, new that, Revampt is pushing back and redefining the meaning of the word “new.” Beyond Eco-Friendly

In 2010, Colorado native Daniel Louis, Revampt’s founder, opted to lean into the green revolution in a fresh way. Instead of honing in on the ever-increasing number of eco-friendly products, Louis consciously chose to focus on products made from resources already in existence. “Everything in the store has been upcycled or repurposed,” Louis says. All of Revampt’s reclaimed home furnishings are curated for their function, creativity and unique repurposed nature. The rustic-meets-industrial pieces are fabricated from the most unsuspecting raw materials; bicycle wheels, sails, tires, broken-down machinery and more. Tabletops made out of old boxcars may be cut from maple, oak, mahogany or hickory wood. Items are sophisticated, stylish and well, cool. Some call this style mountain modern. “Furniture is really my passion,” Louis says. “I don’t think a lot of people know that the bulk of our work is custom work. If someone wanted a table we have just one inch longer, we can make it longer. We really work with the customer to make it a piece that will work for them.”

He goes on to add that Revampt’s made-to-order pieces are truly that. It’s not just a matter of picking between already-built sizes or colors; it can be a completely unique size and color scheme to fit in with a person’s desired style. Vintage Value

Even the turn-of-the-century constructed storefront is a work of art now that it’s gone through a wringer of renovations prior to the shop’s opening. After peeling away four or five layers of flooring, they uncovered the original pine floor that exudes a character hard to replicate. All the changes reflect Revampt’s minimalist approach. In order to ensure the integrity and style of its Cherry Creek North original building, Louis minimized serious renovations and simply opened up the walls, including an expansion to the space next door. “Cherry Creek has been really good. We’re excited to be where we are. Every year it just continues to grow and grow,” says Louis. Revampt sells sensible, utilitarian and incredibly unique home furnishings and gifts--all made from reclaimed, recycled or repurposed materials. Smart shoppers know that home décor doesn’t need to be bought from a catalog. Having flair and a story behind each piece not only makes for great conversation starters, but the reclaimed materials are also hands-down better for the environment. Less new product, less waste. And there’s something inimitably special about having a custom piece of furniture that’s been manufactured just for you and your family.

SHOWSTOPPER The designers achieved an industrial look for this fun-filled game room. Lighting was a great way to accomplish that with vintage inspired Edison bulbs in the chandeliers. They had to get creative in order to incorporate all of the games the homeowner wanted., still leaving enough space to showcase their exquisite car collection. They selected warm tones for the furniture and concrete flooring to balance the metal stone and glass used in this game room.

Wendy Harriman Artist - Wandertree @wandertreeco Colorado’s copious amounts of natural beauty has inspired Denver artist, Wendy Harriman, to create unique wall hangings and dream catchers. Her business, Wandertree, was just created this past year and is already well established in the Colorado art scene. She works mostly on a commission basis but is also exhibited and sold at Nod and Rose in Boulder and in San Diego. Harriman uses natural wood, varied colors of yarn, suede and feathers to create each individual piece. She also taught herself to macramé (tying knots to create various designs), which creates beautiful designs seen on her artwork.

“I am inspired by nature. There are patterns in nature everywhere you look,” says Harriman.

Sara Schmitz Olsen + Christa Olsen Artists, Designers – Chrisara Designs ChrisaraDesigns.com What would happen if you took two competitive twins and dropped them in the picturesque beauty of Colorado? The outcome would look a lot like Northglenn-based artists Sara Schmitz Olson and Christa Olson. Taking inspiration from nature and classic Western imagery, they founded Chrisara clothing line and home elements. At an early age they realized their drawing capabilities and a healthy dose of sibling rivalry pushed their skills to the next level. They later learned to work to the advantage of each other’s assets.

“It’s amazing to feel like two major dreams were fulfilled when we started our own business: working side by side w/ our other half (twin) and being able to create art every day of the week,” says Sara Schmitz Olsen.

For the Love of Chocolate

Denver’s Ritual artfully crafts a better gourmet version

34

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | February 2015

D

id you know it’s possible to make something better than chocolate? It’s craft chocolate, and it only takes three ingredients: exotic cacao beans, cane sugar and a lot of love. Robbie Stout and Anna Davies, the founders of Denver’s Ritual Chocolate, know all about the art of making gourmet, bean-to-bar chocolate. “We saw the discrepancy between the quality of wine and coffee compared to chocolate. So we thought, why not just make better chocolate?” Stout says. Stout and Davies don’t cut any corners when it comes to making their bars, but there’s no arguing that the end product is worth the effort. And it all starts with the cacao beans. Ritual Chocolate works closely with five cacao farmers in Madagascar, Ecuador, Belize, Costa Rica and Peru. Each region has different tasting beans due to the varying climates, soil compositions, and genetics of the fruit trees. You’ll be amazed at just how different each bar tastes from one another. “West Africa is the worst place to get cacao beans, but that’s where 70 percent of the world’s cacao is coming from,” Stout says. “We get it from South America, where the beans have old genetics. It’s part of their culture and people there are connected to what they are doing.” Ritual Chocolate also has a strong connection to their craft. Stout and Davies produce their chocolate using vintage, specialty chocolate-making equipment and take pride in each fine-tuned phase. From when the cacao beans first arrive at the factory and debris and underdeveloped beans are picked out by hand, to the final step of molding and wrapping each chocolate bar, again, by hand, there is a lot of dedication involved with making each bar. To see where Ritual Chocolate is made, there’s no need to find the golden ticket. Stop into the store located at 3153 Larimer Street. Also, their website, RitualChocolate.com, lists all of the locations at which you can find their gourmet chocolate around town.

Ritual Chocolate

3153 Larimer Street Denver, CO 80205 RitualChocolate.com

“I think our chocolate is so shockingly distinct, unique and enjoyable, and you don’t have to be a connoisseur to taste the difference,” Stout says. “People have what we like to call a chocolate moment: when you can’t look at chocolate the same again and you realize that this is what it actually is supposed to taste like.” With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, keep Ritual Chocolate in mind. If your typical box of chocolates wins hearts, just imagine what high-quality chocolate can do.

D Bar re-opens with expanded menu and space Article Allyson Reedy Photography Lynn Chyi

W

hen D Bar first opened in their tiny space on 17th Street back in 2008, the ‘D’ stood for dessert. But, bolstered by Chef Keegan Gerhard’s frequent appearances on the Food Network, it became apparent that that little restaurant was so much more than sweets. Their limited savory menu became just as popular as their desserts, and snagging a table at the shoebox-sized restaurant was always a challenge. It was time to expand the ‘D’ – both in terms of offerings and size. After going on hiatus in March 2014, D Bar re-opened late last year in a new, 4,000-squarefoot uptown location, within walking distance of the 16th Street Mall. And now, instead of being defined by dessert, the ‘D’ represents drinks and dining as well. Essentially, a complete restaurant. The new, much more generously sized space houses a dining room, bar, dessert bar and coffee shop. Like the old D Bar, the new one is warm and inviting, just slightly less cozy. While planning for the move and revamp, Gerhard and his wife, the equally talented Pastry Chef Lisa Bailey, listened to what customers wanted. You’ll see many favorites from the old menu, like the decadent Bacon Mac & Cheese and now-iconic Cake and Shake, and also new savory additions like Crispy Pork Wings in a miso BBQ sauce and Short Rib Raviolo.

D Bar

Brunch, Lunch, Dinner, Dessert 494 East 19th Ave. 303.861.4710 DBarDenver.com

My favorite made the move – Crue Fries topped with loads of melted cheese, bacon and ranch. Health food it is not, but who needs diets when there are ooey gooey cheese fries to be had? Other tasty savory options are the Scallops paired with butternut squash risotto and the vegetarian Pizza Salad Sandwich with pesto, chevre and mozzarella. Of course if you’re at D Bar, you either knew to save room for dessert or you decided to make dessert your dinner (one of the perks of being a grown-up). The B.Y.O. Sundae is a lot of fun – a platter loaded with waffles, brûléed bananas, ice cream, sauces and whatever else they put on the plate that day. The cutely named Molten Cake Thingy That Everyone Has is delicious, and quite possibly better than the one that everyone else has. I think it’s safe to say that the expanded D Bar is both new and improved. It’s a place where you can still get your just desserts – or brunch, lunch and dinner too. A

healthy, fit & active lifestyle and living in Denver go together like peas in pod. And nowadays it seems practically everyone you know (and their mother) train for this, that and the other. And why not? Denver is, after all, an athlete’s dream town. Why with its 300+ sunny days per year, its endless urban and rural trails, high altitude and all the fantastic sporting good stores packed to the brim with high-end equipment just waiting to adorn even the greenest of rookies. Not everyone has to be a pro to get in on the action though. FastForward Sports (F4) formed from the belief that athletes of all abilities should be able to train, build community and have fun (gasp!) doing it. This was the foundation upon which F4 was established in 2005; the company recently went through an ownership change last year when entrepreneur Tim O’Brien took over the reins from its founder, Scott Fliegelman. “F4 is a training group for like-minded individuals who are all working together and have very similar goals and/or abilities. We help motivate each other to get to and across the finish line,” explains owner Tim O’Brien.

ROOTED IN COMMUNITY

With outstanding coaches who are all top notch in their field and well renowned in the local fitness industry, such as Adam St. Pierre and Craig Howie, athletes know right off the bat that they are in good hands. And because the other members share the same beliefs of living a healthy & fit lifestyle, some people have forged incredibly deep friendships together and have been with the group since its inception.
