MAY 2015
In the midst of this issue’s magnificent photo shoot, someone asked if this was really how things went down at my wedding. It was hard not to laugh out loud. Yes, my wedding day was the best day of my life, but there were definitely some stressful moments.

The whirlwind and sometimes chaotic nature of wedding planning just comes with the territory. How many times in our life do we get to have all of our favorite people in our life with us for a full day, or weekend? Leaving the heavy lifting and details to a professional is certainly one way to avoid some of the unforeseen speed bumps that come with the territory. Before our wedding, I thought the concept of “wedding crashers” was just the theme of a funny Owen Wilson movie. When 500 people showed up to our wedding, (which 450 had RSVP’d), it made for one heck of a party. Here in Denver, we are fortunate to have amazing natural backdrops, venues, and some of the most talented professionals in the business. I had the fortune of working with some of these vendors during a recent shoot at the Highlands Ranch Mansion. I was blown away by the individual talent that came together. They helped us put together inspirations, love stories and wonderful details to ensure you enjoy each page.

Another aspect of this season that cannot be overlooked is Mother’s Day. Two months after our wedding, all it took was one trip to Santa Barbara, an awesome Led Zeppelin cover band, and we had our first child on the way. Six years into our marriage, we are thrilled to have our fourth child on the way in the fall. Being a mother of three children, each day is an adventure. For every treacherous diaper, yogurt slung on the wall, and melt down, there is the joy of a child’s hug, unfiltered questions about life, and “Mommy, I love you”. Cheers to all the moms out there for all the sacrifice and love you pour into your children.

The Summer Concert Series, Blossoms of Light, Trail of Lights, Pumpkin Festival, Corn Maze and Plant Sales also spurred attendance.

A Taste of Portofino DENVER'S LO STELLA CHANNELS OLD ITALY ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY COLLEEN KELLY
16
Cherry Creek Lifestyle | May 2015
A
thriving piece of old Italy lies tucked away in downtown Denver about a mile from the 16th Street Mall and amidst Colorado museums, galleries and cafes. Lo Stella Ristorante is an unassuming, hidden gem owned by Italian native Alessandro Polo. In addition to the restaurant’s 165-year (and counting) success in Italy, Lo Stella had a (comparatively) brief 25-year presence in Tokyo. How’s that for a worldly establishment? Now in its 8th generation of family run operation, Lo Stella boasts food and fare straight from Portofino, Italy. Choices such as Lasagna al Pesto, Grandmas Bolognese and Pansotti in Salsa di Noci (Ravioli with Walnut Sauce) grace this menu of authentic Italian dishes (you'll find no Alfredo here). The all-homemade-all-the-time dishes are modestly priced and massively flavored. Walking into the restaurant, I noticed a simple, understated decor scheme. The large front windows caught my eye immediately both for their aesthetic value and the natural light they allow to enter the restaurant. A lunch lit by the afternoon sun and nothing else is relaxing in itself without even discussing the cuisine. My personal favorite is the outdoor patio area that allows for additional seating choices for a family meal or a casual happy hour. Lo Stella's location and style gives off an energy indicative of our inclusive and cultured city. Whether you're a local looking for a sunny place to unwind after work, or a visitor looking for a calm place to enjoy a Colorado meal, Alessandro will make sure your experience is a pleasant and memorable one.
On my first trip to Lo Stella, I sat down for a midday meal of fish ravioli ("Our signature dish," Polo says), beef carpaccio and a glass of Chardonnay. The quality of the food complemented the attentiveness of both the staff and Polo himself. The pasta was al dente, the fish was delectable and the wine was perfectly chilled. I left feeling, well, full, and welcomed. Both the servings and the service gave me a warm, family-centered vibe that left me planning my next trip back to Italy ... I mean Denver.

hen my husband and I were looking for a weekend getaway destination, we thought of all the usual Colorado mountain town suspects, but nothing spoke to us. Then someone mentioned Manitou Springs. A quirky, beautiful town nestled in the mountains without having to deal with I-70 traffic? Sign us up! 150 years old, this stately stunner still retains its glamour and charm. The rooms are spacious and well-decorated, the staff is friendly and attentive and the location can’t be beat – just off the main shopping drag. You may not want to go back to the modern world. TheCliffHouse.com
EAT There is really good barbecue to be had in Manitou Springs. Suzy Q’s smokes up lots of meat – ribs, chicken, pork, brisket, turkey and links – but it’s the ribs that are the standout. Meaty and flavorful with just the right amount of give, these are some of the best we’ve tasted in the state. Tip: Go for lunch. On busy days they sell out by dinnertime. SuzyQsBBCue.com While downtown boasts loads of casual options, The Dining Room at the Cliff House
is the clear choice for fine dining. The setting is historic and opulent, while the food is simultaneously classic and innovative. A GARDEN LOVE AFFAIR
Finally spring has sprung and wedding season has arrived. The Highlands Ranch Mansion hosted this gorgeous styled shoot with the main driving force being spring. The focus of the décor is creative contrast: vintage and modern. We found opposites really do attract with the two vastly different esthetics working magically together. Be bold and playful with your wedding style by incorporating edgy decorations with vintage vibes. The wedding gown attire from Emma and Grace is a timeless look, yet the headpiece from Todd Reed gives a real modern twist. Colorful antique furniture and plenty of bright pops of color proves that you don’t need to stick to stringent color themes. It’s easy to use a lot of color, especially when you “tie-in” the groom’s tie with the floral theme, or compliment the vibrant colors with a neutral cake. Captured by Ali Brannan, we hope this shoot encourages you to balance the contrast, and compromise to get the best results for your fairytale wedding. CONTINUED > 28

"Spring blossoms are the most magical - there is something about the first blooms after a snowy winter that just make your heart sing. Arrangements with spring blooms are always so fresh and unique since these flowers are usually only in bloom and at their peak for such a short period of time." "When arranging flowers for your home, let the flowers breathe and take their natural shape. The curve of a ranunculus stem is so beautiful and should be played up; let your flowers go a little wild and you will have a gorgeous, natural arrangement."Â CONTINUED >

• Your favorite opaque vessel • A piece of chicken wire large enough to create a reasonably tight fit in your container • Four to five types of your favorite flowers. Try to vary the shape a bit so that some are soft and fluffy, some have a longer line, some are larger, some are smaller, some are viney in nature. Variety makes the arrangement beautiful. We used peonies, lilacs, spray roses, tulips, clematis and apple blossom branches. • One or two types of foliage. Feel free to forage from your garden for flowers and foliage. We used dusty miller and scented geranium. • A floral knife or some clippers–no scissors! Scissors damage a flower’s stem, prohibiting it from drinking properly.

INSTRUCTIONS:
STEP 1 The first step to any gorgeous floral arrangement is to prepare your flowers. Make sure you clean off any foliage that will fall below the water line. Leaves in the water will encourage the growth of bacteria, which will shorten the life of your arrangement. STEP 2 Next, prepare your container. Bend your chicken wire to fit snugly inside the container. The chicken wire acts as a grid to hold your flowers where you want them, giving your design the shape you want. STEP 3 Begin by gathering and placing some of your large, fluffy flowers in a group–here, peonies and spray roses. It gives the arrangement a beautiful focal point. Next, add in some of your longer-line flowers (in our piece we used the lilac and tulips). Use the long-line flowers to create a wild, garden-esque shape. Movement is key–let the flowers reach and swoop–it will give your piece so much life. STEP 4 Turn your vessel around in slow circles as you design, continuing to place your larger, fluffier flowers a little lower, with your line flowers slightly taller. Begin to fill in with your foliages. STEP 5 We finished our arrangement with blooming apple branches and clematis. The viney clematis is the perfect finishing touch. We let ours peek out above our other flowers to give the piece a very wild look.
4.
5. Spring offers such an incredible bounty of beautiful flowers that we couldn’t resist the opportunity to gather together some of our favorites to create a lush spring centerpiece perfect for the many gatherings that happen at this time of year: showers, graduation parties, bridal teas and other special occasions.

"This wedding was quintessential Colorado. With endless mountain vistas, this couple dreamed of a ceremony tucked away in the mountains. What this wedding did best was embraced the environment on all accounts, we very specifically foraged for local and seasonal foliage and blooms. It was very important to the couple that we design with the landscape and not against it. By harnessing local and seasonal floral elements you are promised a unique and authentic floral pallete. "

Real Wedding: Sloan & Mike ARTICLE DANA LAPINEL | PHOTOGRAPHY ASHLEIGH MILLER PHOTOGRAPHY
I
taly is undeniably known as one of the most romantic places in the world. So it’s no surprise when a love story begins with, we met the day we arrived in Italy. This is how Sloan Solomon and Mike Komadina’s love story begins, in Perugia, Italy while studying abroad. Mike and Sloan both attended the University of Colorado in Boulder. Sloan’s friend knew Mike would be venturing to Italy as well, and wanted the two to have a familiar face while in a foreign home. However, the future lovebirds never met before their departure. “Since there were about five other Mike’s in our program, I wasn’t sure if he was the Mike my friend had told me about. Once he heard my name he goes, ‘so you’re Sloan!’ There was something about his smile, eyes and the way he looked at me. I got butterflies. At that moment our magical love story began,” says Solomon.
Jump to four years later when the couple had planned a weekend getaway to Beaver Creek for their anniversary. Solomon was pleasantly surprised with a heartfelt, and snowy proposal under a romantic spotlight. “He caught me completely off guard as he had been telling me he was not going to pop the question until I completed grad school. So, I literally had no idea,” says Solomon. Komadina’s surprises didn’t stop with just the proposal. Upon returning to Denver the next day, he organized a surprise engagement party and flew in Solomon’s closest friends and family. After their engagement party, it was time to start the wedding planning. When choosing their venue, they knew that Blanc would be perfect fit for their big day. Blanc is an urban venue right in downtown
Denver that has both an indoor and outdoor space. Truly the best of both worlds. “We also loved the industrial and rustic like feel of the venue,” says Solomon. Their wedding space had neutral colors, aspects of fall and enough space for their wedding party to dance all night and enjoy themselves. “Mike and I both wanted our wedding to be a fun party to celebrate our marriage. That said our biggest hope was that people would dance all night and enjoy themselves. Additionally, we wanted to make sure we had time to enjoy ourselves,” says Solomon. Their hopes came true and their wedding was an unforgettable time. “We had people raving about our wedding and telling us how beautiful and fun it was, which was definitely special,” says Solomon.
Sloan and Mike both agreed that the most memorable moment of their wedding was watching each other walk down the aisle, and sharing their personalized vows. After their vows, they incorporated some Jewish traditions into their ceremony that they felt were meaningful. “Mike was raised Catholic and I was raised Jewish, however we do not consider ourselves extremely religious. We did the chuppah and breaking of the glass, which we felt were special to who we are and what we want out marriage to represent,” says Solomon. After their beautiful wedding the couple decided to wait until their anniversary month of January to celebrate their honeymoon. They escaped the cold and enjoyed some sun and relaxation in the Bahamas. “I have to say I feel like everything was perfect, and it was a dream come true,” says Solomon.
