The Good Life. W

ith each passing birthday, certain ages seem younger and younger. For instance, when I was a child and my mom turned 45; that number sounded so “advanced” to me. Now that I am 45, the number doesn’t sound so old at all…I guess it is all relative. As it turns out, 45 is the median age of Chesterfield’s population. So, here I am, right in the middle. I couldn’t have planned that any better. Though 45 is the median age in Chesterfield, more than 40 percent of our city’s residents are over the age of 55. This age group is considered to be experiencing their “Golden Years” and our Chesterfield seniors are living “The GOOD Life.” “The GOOD Life” might be filled with travel, time with grandchildren, dancing lessons or volunteering. Many Chesterfield seniors have empty-nests, remain very physically active and become more involved in our community. “The GOOD Life” issue celebrates the memories, the positive influences and the active lives of Chesterfield residents who are living in their “Golden Years.” I consider my parents to be exemplary, active seniors. My dad turned 89 in November, and still goes walking in Chesterfield Mall every day for exercise and social interaction. In addition to driving several of our children to and from their extracurricular activities, Dad also picks up our middle school age kids from their bus stop each afternoon and drives them home. My mom is 77 and plays Bridge at least once a week. She also peruses items at craft fairs and antique malls with her friends. They walk their dog, Andy, together several times a day. Both Mom and Dad look and act much younger than their ages; they both dress stylishly in bright colors, both have a positive outlook on life, and are both certainly enjoying “The Good Life.” I look forward to the days when I have my own grandchildren to spoil and return to their parents (sassy, I know.) I have always told our kids that I want at least a 10-year break between changing their siblings’ diapers and changing their children’s diapers (seems fair to me.) Our youngest has been “trained” for two years, so I have roughly eight years left. Our oldest child is 17 and would be 25+ on that plan. Well, I know it is not ultimately up to me and that things don’t always (okay, don’t ever) go as planned. Case in point; my youngest child is going into kindergarten next school year. What that means to me is I will be nearly 60 years old when he graduates from high school. I can assure you I certainly didn’t sit down and plan that out in my 20s! It is good thing that “50 is the new 30” because that would make “60 the new 40.” According to these new “rules” I will actually be younger than I am now, when the little guy graduates… works for me! That plan is “Good as Golden.”

ICE THE CELL PHONES IN YOUR CIRCLE As the cold weather blankets our area, you or your family members may find themselves stuck in a life-threatening situation due to extreme temperatures. Someone may slip and fall, a car might break down, or someone could be locked out of a car or home and stranded – literally left out in the cold. To ICE a cell phone, you load emergency contacts in cell phones with the word ICE in front of the emergency contact names so when someone is assisting a person in trouble they know who to call In Case of Emergency. The goal is that this will become a universal emergency plan – a quick way for emergency respondents or other helpful citizens to pick up a cell phone, and press the letter ‘I’ to find emergency contacts quickly.

Simple steps: · Under ‘I’ in the contact list, load the contact names, beginning with the word ICE (ICE John Babb) · Make sure the emergency contact(s) agree to be an ICE partner. · Include every phone number (home/ cell/work) of the ICE partner. · ICE partners should be aware of medical conditions, doctors’ names and medications.

CHESTERFIELD DAY SCHOOL STUDENTS DEVELOP INVENTIONS FOR 1600s “SHARK TANK” PROJECT Dirty water… Waste in the streets… Uncomfortable beds… These were some of the problems facing American colonists and English citizens living in the 1600s. Recently, Chesterfield Day School fourth graders were able to apply their understanding of life in the 1600s to the development of a new product that would have enhanced the quality of life in that era. After researching and identifying a specific need, students worked in small groups to compile information about the time period, to better understand the materials that were available in the 1600s and to craft a solution to a particular problem. Inventions varied from creative ways to filter water, innovative approaches to providing outdoor lighting, to a new method of creating softer mattresses. Once an invention prototype was developed, the fourth graders pitched their products to the group of “sharks” much like the TV show “Shark Tank” on ABC. The investors listened to the presentations, asked questions, and made the de-

The investor panel included local experts such as Lorri Glover, a professor of history at St. Louis University. “I admired the students’ confidence, their teamwork, and their zeal for colonial history,” says Glover. “It was so exciting to see the students showcase their creativity and research skills in such an imaginative project.” It is clear that through this process students learned not only about the colonies and England in the 1600s, but also how to truly work as a team. They realized that relying on the strengths of each member of their teams was important to the success of their teams. or some older adults in Chesterfield, “senior moments” are still some of their fondest memories. Chesterfield Lifestyle recently asked several residents to recall some favorite times when they were seniors in high school and to share why those recollections have made such a lasting impression in their lives.

Lynne Johnson, 69 Chair of Chesterfield’s Historic and Landmark Preservation Committee Retired physics teacher at Villa Duchesne High School Graduated 1963 - Red Bank High School, Red Bank, NJ

“One of one of my favorite memories was being in the senior play ‘Bye Bye Birdie.’ I played the mother, which wasn’t a big role but was fun, and I enjoyed being part of the cast. The memory I always bring up to talk to people about is when I decided where to go to college. I was very lucky I changed my mind about that! I was on a waiting list for Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass. and thought I’d never get in, so I decided go somewhere else. My high school counselor noticed I had taken my name off the waiting list but said another classmate was on the list and was just asked to come. So she said ‘maybe you should change your mind.’ I did and I went. I worked hard there but was thankful to go, in part because met I my husband Scott in that city. I enjoyed my senior year in high school a lot though we worked hard.”

Jane Durrell, 80 Former Chesterfield City Council member 2013 Chesterfield Citizen of the Year Graduated 1951 - Champaign Senior High School, Champaign, IL

“Champaign Senior High School had a noted and outstanding comprehensive music program with extra-curricular activity in band, orchestra and several choral groups. I loved to sing and belonged to the vocal groups, one of which was concert choir, a mixed chorus of 88 members from all three upper grades. At our spring concert, with seniors featured with solo numbers, we ended the concert with Battle Hymn of the Republic. It was breath18

taking for both participants and audience, just majestic. We all felt the awe, the inspiration, the unifying effort and the camaraderie. Also, our school mid-winter play, ‘Prologue to Glory’ was the story of young Abe Lincoln in New Salem, Ill., his courtship of Ann Rutledge and his first step in politics. In my senior year, I participated, playing the part of Granny Rutledge. I wore my mother’s shoes and used my grandmother’s Bible as a prop. In a cast of 24 students, half were very good friends of mine, so it was a shared experience, gentle and caring and loving, and one that those of us who played in it still remember and talk about. The school took the play to Illinois State finals and won second place. One of my fondest memories is graduation. The ceremony was during the day on the school playground. The day was sunny and warm, and my widowed mother was there with one of our neighbors, sitting in the bleachers. It was a proud moment for both of us for her to be there and watch me being presented with my diploma. Most of my friends stayed on in Champaign to attend the University of Illinois, so it was really not good-bye, as we continued to run into each other long after that day, and enjoyed visits back to say hello to our teachers.”

Don Wiegand, 67 Renowned sculptor and artist Graduated 1966 - Mercy High School, University City

“I have a couple favorite memories. I was always interested in sports but was never very good at them. Well, I was good at track but focused more on my art in high school; I always got a lot of punch from my ability to create art. When I sketched my instructors, I got better grades! One

man teaching speech was tall, distinguished and every elegantly spoken. I’d sit in back of the class and regularly sketch teachers, and, one day in his class, a ruler went across my desk as I was sketching his portrait. He said, ‘Stop what you’re doing and come tomorrow with a bigger tablet.’ So I showed up the next day with a full tablet and he was wearing a full tuxedo jacket. He gave everybody else homework to do and he sat in the front of the class where I sketched him. Needless to say, I got an A out of his speech class! In another senior moment, Sister Mary Eligius, who taught mechanical drawing and was in charge of a lot of theater set design, realized how good I could paint and took me out of classes to paint scenery for plays. So, in my senior year, I spent a lot of time just creating art for school and stage. Despite that, all my teachers raised my grades and exempted me from classes while I was painting. I learned very young that there’s a lot of strength and value and power in art. Another story was from senior prom. I was sitting on the senior prom committee and we were asked to come up with ideas. Somebody suggested South Pacific, and I started rattling off ideas for that theme. The next thing I knew, I was in charge of the prom. I still remember that because of their girlfriends, I had all these jocks, big guys, down on the floor cutting out palm leaves for trees! Also for the prom, I cut some vines from woods near my home in Gumbo (now Chesterfield Valley) to use for the entrance to the prom. I wove the vines and put papier-mâché leaves on them. But the vines turned out to be poison oak, and a lot of people started scratching… Still, the prom was fun and those were fun moments. My senior year, I left as Mercy High’s official artist. And this is the 49th year since high school I’ve taken the Sisters of Mercy, who made up the staff, little Christmas presents as a form of gratitude to thank them.”

Billings, just west of Malta, Montana. Among my duties and jobs over the summer were mending fences, branding cattle, driving a tractor racking hay, feeding cattle and assisting in the surgical processes of transforming stallions into geldings and a bulls into steer. In addition to the family members who worked on the ranch, there were hired hands who lived in the bunk house. They were quite a cast of characters ranging from cowboys to mechanics. The work week was seven days a week at $7 a day with room and board included. All in all, it was probably a good experience for a 17 year old with an adventurous spirit.”

“I don’t readily recall any particularly memorable moments when I was a senior in high school; however, as I think back, I did have the opportunity to have a few very different types of jobs as I was going to school. One of these was over the summer before my senior year. That summer I spent in Montana working on a cattle ranch that was owned and operated by my great aunt and uncle and their family. They had homesteaded in the early 1900s and their ranch grew to approximately 100 square miles located about 200 miles north of

“My favorite memories are getting an award as best football player /most valuable player - I was a quarterback - and my graduation ceremony. With both, I achieved something important. My high school graduation ceremony was on a beautiful night on May 19, 1962, and I liked the venue where it was held: a big quadrangle courtyard on the old Cardinal Glennon college campus in Shrewsbury.” continued >

“Enterprise, Ala., where I went to high school, is the only town in the world with a monument to a pest: the boll weevil, which killed off all the cotton. So the town had to switch to growing peanuts, which were much more economically productive. My dad had been transferred to St. Louis my senior year in high school but my mom elected to stay in Enterprise so I could graduate. Otherwise, I would have graduated from McCluer High School, as my two younger brothers did. I was very attached to my school. I remember during spring break and vacations, we’d go to Panama Beach, Fla., which was only 90 miles away and a beautiful area. My class was very small, likely 125 kids, and a lot of us were close because we attended the local United Methodist Church, and I hung out with some kids from their youth group. Our graduation was supposed to be at the football stadium but it rained so we had it indoors. It was nice, and I remember my grandmother was able to come. I was in the drama club and I was on the staff of the school newsletter. I really enjoyed writing in high school, and it was fun to do those projects. The big thing every Friday night was to go to the Enterprise Wildcats football games. We also had a club in high school we created ourselves called Be Kind to Animals, and we would sit around and cut out pictures of animals or go visit shelters and help out. I’ve always been

an environmentalist and wildlife person and I think that started back then. A few years ago, my high school was leveled by a tornado and a few kids were killed. The building was later rebuilt. But I remember the old school fondly.”

“There were a lot of things going on back in the 1960s: The Civil Rights Movement, the Women’s Movement, the Vietnam War and college campus protests. All these things to contemplate and trying to decide what I wanted to do after graduation! With rumors about a military draft, some of my friends decided to enlist in the Army and unfortunately some of my buddies and my best friend never returned back home. Some decided to go to college but I decided to get a job. I think we were more mature than the high school graduates are today. One of my favorite memories was after graduation. That summer, we went to the Beatles concert at Busch Stadium. It was really crazy with a lot of girls screaming. It rained but we had a great time. With everything going on in the mid-60s being pretty chaotic, this was providing a distraction from everything else happening and a pleasant experience that has stuck with me a long time.”

t is the season of engagements and wedding planning for couples all over the Chesterfield area. One option growing in popularity is the destination wedding. Instead of a traditional church wedding and hotel or hall reception, couples may choose to marry on an exotic beach, in a European castle, on a cruise ship or even on a ski slope. Chesterfield Travel Leaders owner and destination wedding specialist Marcie Boyle says, “Destination weddings are hugely popular because of the beautiful locations, the low-stress of planning and in many cases, the cost being less than a traditional wedding.” Chesterfield residents Cherie and Jeff Mills were married in June 2014 in a destination wedding on the island of Turks & Caicos. We spoke with Cherie about her experience, why she chose a destination wedding and what it was like for her and Jeff during the planning process as well as the wedding itself. When Cherie and Jeff got engaged, they knew they wanted the planning and the wedding to be something they both enjoyed. Not wanting the stress of planning a big traditional wedding with the pressure of everything being perfect, Jeff and Cherie felt like a destination wedding was a way to celebrate their marriage and enjoy quality time with their family. Cherie Mills said, “A traditional wedding reception lasts for five hours, and the bride and groom spend most of that time running from table to table, trying to say hello to everyone. Our destination wedding spanned a week, which meant that we had quality time to spend together. The cost was the same as a small wedding in St. Louis, and we love to travel, so it was the right decision for us.”

22

Chesterfield Lifestyle | December 2014

Booking their wedding about six months in advance, Jeff and Cherie consulted with Marcie at Travel Leaders in Chesterfield to research upscale beach destinations. They wanted to choose a place that Cherie, Jeff and the guests had never visited. They ultimately chose Turks & Caicos because of the pleasant weather in June and the ease of getting there on a short f light from St. Louis For Cherie and Jeff, the best part was getting married in a beautiful, unique location and being able to relax and truly enjoy every moment. Cherie said, “Our time was spent enjoying each other, our family and the trip, not fretting over the wedding. I literally cancelled my noon pedicure appointment the day of the wedding to hang out with everyone on the beach an extra hour before I had to get ready.” We asked Cherie if there were any funny wedding mishaps. “Everyone, including me, had to climb down a ladder from the sailboat into the water and walk to the beach where we said our

vows. That meant everyone had to lift their pants or dresses up as they were getting off the boat. My father was just having a good time with everyone and didn’t realize his pants were soaked to his knees by the time he made it to shore.”, Cherie said. Cherie offers advice to brides considering a destination wedding. “Call a local travel agency that specializes in destination weddings. They handle all the specifics and can guide you in the right direction without wasting time. Don’t get caught up in the details. Enjoy every minute of the trip and your wedding day. If your wedding is on the beach, your hair is going to be windblown, you might be squinting in pictures, and you won’t be in heels. That’s part of the fun.” For destination wedding advice and planning, call the destination wedding specialists at Chesterfield Travel Leaders at 636.778.1081 or visit them at 17281 Chesterfield Airport Road (off I-64 and Boone’s Crossing.)

The Cedar Chest A Look Back at Retirement in Chesterfield Article Aimee Pellet | Photography Provided

D

o you ever look back on your childhood and think of something you thought was not very fun or exciting at that time, but when you look back now; you realize how lucky you were? One of those things for me was the fervent wish for a young, cool babysitter, Someone with whom I could play Barbie dolls and who would teach me “grown up” things. I never had one. My ever-available babysitter was my great-grandmother, who we called Nana. She lived less than five minutes from us and had reached an age where she wasn’t going out to socialize or visit friends anymore. So why would my parents even think of paying someone to watch me? In hindsight, having her as my babysitter was one of the greatest gifts my parents ever gave me. Even at the time it didn’t seem bad exactly, but definitely not “cool”. It’s something that I think most kids today probably cannot relate to… spending significant time with someone THREE generations older. Because families tend to have children at a later age now and because of our hyper-mobile society many people may not even know a great-grandparent. It gave me a connection to and appreciation of the past that I now consider priceless. Some days we would sit and watch television – often a Cardinal’s baseball game – or listen to the scratchy voices on the radio if the game wasn’t televised. I don’t think she liked the constant chatter of television announcers or maybe the rabbit ears just weren’t working well. Other times I would play with toys that had been left behind by previous generations, that even then seemed “antique” but not without their fun, and which could now probably fetch a hefty sum on Ebay. Occasionally, Nana would let me help make her family-famous coffee cake. What I remember most about those days with Nana was the “Cedar Chest.” A huge antique chest that held all of the things she considered important pieces of her life and the lives of other family members… physical remnants and reminders. Every so often I would ask her if we could look through the items in the chest. She would watch over me as I carefully and gently pulled each item out to look at it. In fact, I’m pretty sure it was Nana whose watchful eye taught me the meaning of careful and gentle. I would pull out a christening dress of my grandmother’s, my great-grandfather’s shaving mug, Nana’s old school books and be awed by them – how different they were from our own modern material items. In the many years I stayed at Nana’s, I never really thought about things from her perspective-- that she spent much of her retirement babysitting. I was talking with my mom the other day and she said that while some aspects of senior living have remained the same, much of the perspective has changed. “Retirement” and “old age” have different meanings now for 21st cen-

tury retirees. In the early 20th century, retirement was not such a buzz-word... people continued working hard for as long as they could. If they were employed by a company or school, they often worked for the same entity for decades. They would live nearby family and friends and that was the setting for aging well...and living out their life. Many retirees in Chesterfield today look forward to a more active, often longer period of senior years that include extensive travel, participating in sports or outdoor activities, volunteering and entertaining. Social activities and hobbies as part of a retirement 100 years ago were often seen as simply having more time to do things they already did in the limited free time of their working years. Playing cards, attending parties and dances, hunting or fishing and perhaps local travel were popular activities in rural Chesterfield in the past. Finances were different then, too. As my mom recalls, “Before Social Security and IRA’s, people were very wise and disciplined about saving for later years...some rural families bought more land if possible to have investment for the future. My parents are a good example. They didn’t buy until they had the cash - even a house. Passing on land to the younger generation was the optimum target for rural families...and land did increase in value but in hard financial times, was not easily traded in for cash.” Even if Chesterfield residents were able to afford the types of retirement that people look forward to now, the graduated levels of senior living, assisted living, and advanced care facilities that continued >

we know today didn’t really exist. And when nursing homes did first make an appearance in the Chesterfield area, they were more for recuperating from a surgery or illness. Like Nana, most people continued to live by themselves or with family. One of the stories that circulates in our family is that of my great-great-grandfather. In his last years he was an invalid. That meant being basically confined to the upstairs of their home, cared for by family. Both my mom and her cousin remember going to see Grandpa Reising upstairs, but they also remember that he would throw dollar bills out of the upstairs window for the grandkids. “I can still see them floating in the air,” my mom recollected. Odd perhaps, but it speaks of those family members still wanting a connection. Even death was viewed differently. The items in that old cedar

chest that intrigued me the most were a pair of black gloves and two pieces of black crepe. Nana then explained to me what MOURNING was, a tradition that long preceded my great-grandmother’s generation. Mourning saw its zenith during the Victorian Era, when death was taken very seriously and strict rules governed behavior as well as fashion. Women often remained fully ensconced in black for years at a time, depending upon the relationship to the deceased – the closer the relation, the longer the period of mourning. These rules would have been somewhat less structured in rural Chesterfield, but important nonetheless. I recall my great-aunt, Lois, telling me that her grandmother also died at home, as it made a big impression on her as a child. What stuck in Aunt Lois’ mind is that as a young girl of 10 she was sleeping in the bed with her Grandma when she passed away. That alludes to just how close multiple generations of families were. In our family’s photo album there is an old, faded photo of a bed with a notation that this was the bed in which Grandma Reising died; another physical reminder of the sad importance of such an event. Although many of my relatives have long since passed away, we still have the family cedar chest. It has been merged with the contents of my grandmother’s own cedar chest and we occasionally add our own items to it… those little pieces of physical history that glimmer through the years. I’m thankful that I was able to spend time with older generations and that they left a few physical remnants of their lives behind. One thing hasn’t changed about senior living – our family patriarchs and matriarchs are our elders and are people with much wisdom and love to share. As we approach the holidays this year, take the time to ask older friends and relatives what their life was like “in the olden days.” Get your children involved and connected to their own past. Perhaps you can explain why “rabbit ears” were used on a television. What memories and pieces of history does your family have? More importantly, what pieces of history will you pass along to future generations— in your version of the “Cedar Chest?”

Parting Thoughts

Memories with “Muggy” words Abby Gervich

O

ne of my first memories is walking up the small hill all the way to a pond in the center of the little neighborhood in which my great-grandma lived. Holding her smooth, warm hand, every step of the way, we would walk to and sit in a white, wooden gazebo that overlooked the pond. Although the paint on the exterior of the gazebo was chipped and scratched, it was a most beautiful structure to me; my great-grandma and I would sit and talk in it for a while before feeding the ducks in the pond. We loved to feed the ducks together. It was hilarious the way those little creatures waddled over to my hand and ate the tiny chunks of stale bread. I remember walking up to the edge of the pond together and staring down into our rippled reflections in the deep, dark water; I was always thinking about how much fun we were having with each other-just me and my “Muggy.” Yes, that’s right, we all called her “Muggy.” Isn’t that funny how names of grandparents are given? I bet she never would have guessed that after 83 years, she would become known far and wide as “Muggy.” My oldest brother couldn’t pronounce “Gammy” - it came out as “Muggy”-it just stuck with her and people began to call her that. She had many different names during her life-she was a mom, a grandma, a great-grandma, and even a great-great grandma! I liked explaining the story to my friends because most of them wondered why we all called her called her “Muggy.” I can vividly remember the comforting scent of the air when walking thru the front door of Muggy’s house. The aroma was a unique combination of cookies, perfume and her leather gloves. I could recognize that matchless scent anywhere. In fact, I still keep a Ziploc baggie of special items from Muggy’s house, so they can 34

retain their wonderful smell. The baggie contains my Beanie Baby I came to call “Pandy” and my once pure white “blankie” that became “colored” over time from using it as a placemat and a coloring book. Every time I take the items out of the bag the nice smell fills the room and transports me back to memories with Muggy I really enjoyed going over to Muggy’s house because she had unlimited individual time for me; coming from a big family that meant a lot. I basically claimed the right corner of her living room; we piled that area with stickers, paper, and crayons- and just about everything in between. Muggy bought me a tiny red, blue and yellow easel and I drew on it all the time. Muggy really inspired me to me to draw and write. I like to think back to when I would read her my stories; after I finished, she would clap like each one was the best story she had ever heard. Muggy would also hang ALL of my drawings around her house almost like a miniature museum. She definitely contributed to my love of drawing and writing. She also encouraged me to dance. “Muggy, Muggy!” I would say, “Come dance with me!”, as we listened to her “old school” record player. We would dance as the soothing sounds of her old record music filled the room. I would put on costumes that Muggy called “garb” and give her solo dance performances. I really did connect with her; though she was three generations older than me we had so much fun together. I went there to write, draw and dance almost every day in the summers. Muggy would also to tell me stories about when she was a little girl. One of my favorite stories was “The Whistle Story.” I don’t think I could tell it in quite the same way as she did but it went a little like this: Muggy, at age six, had finally

learned how to whistle and she was pretty proud of herself so she just whistled everywhere she went. Her grandma heard her whistling and said, “Louise Meyer! What are you doing with your lips? Only boys whistle!” I believe that is one reason that she was so open about people just being themselves and doing what they wanted without worrying what others thought. I loved listening to her stories, playing back her words in my head trying to picture what she was saying. Looking back at those days, I realize just how lucky I was to have those fun times with Muggy. She taught me many things. In my times with her I learned how to hold scissors, I learned I should always sign and date my drawings; and one of the most important things she taught me was to be myself. That lesson and its concept are extremely important to me. From her orange curly hair (yes, from a bottle) to her bright blue shirts, she taught me it was okay to be different, and that it is actually good to be different if you are being true to yourself. As you may already suspect, she wasn’t your typical great-grandma. Though, at the time she passed, Muggy was 97 and I was 10; we were GREAT friends. Have you ever had someone special like that in your life? Maybe you will get the amazing chance to be that special someone whom enriches and changes a child’s life - like Muggy did for mine. Who knows? Perhaps in 50 years someone will be writing about you!
