Hi, 2018 LET’S TALK ABOUT NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS. Why do we set ourselves up for failure with lofty goals, that no matter how good, are inevitably a chain of compromises? I recently read an interesting article about goal setting and the best advice was to break down resolutions into smaller goals with no set in stone date. Do you want to kick in healthier habits and it’s not January 1st? Go for it. No matter the date or time, there’s no better time than the now to better yourself. Regardless of your personal goals, a common resolution with each new year is to live a healthier lifestyle. Personally, I want to stress less and eat better. With that in mind, the January issue is chock-full of helpful ways to lead a healthy life. Including new fitness trends to try, deconstructed nutritious recipes by Laura Krudener of Among the Colors, a 15-minute workout and how to diet by color. Lastly, an interview with Boulderite-now-New-Yorker Tyler Haney who is taking

PREP SCHOOL CONCOCTING FUN, HEALTHY MEALS WITHIN DIETARY CONSTRAINTS

ARTICLE LISA VAN HORNE | PHOTOGRAPHY SARA FORD

WHEN LAURA KRUDENER BEGAN ADHERING TO A DIET FREE OF COW’S MILK AND GLUTEN OVER TWENTY YEARS AGO, ALTERNATIVE INGREDIENTS TO MAKE DISHES EXCITING AND ENTICING WITHIN HER RESTRICTIONS WERE, LET’S JUST SAY, SPARSE. Determined to find ways to enjoy her favorite foods in ways that fit into her dietary constraints, Krudener became a self-taught chef and adopted the belief that all food, especially that which helps maintain health and wellness, should still be delicious and fun. Today, Krudener is the author of Among the Colors (AmongtheColors.com), a lifestyle blog that aims to bring this same creativity and imaginative drive to its readers through food, wellness, art, style and more. When whipping up a healthy meal, Krudener always aims to (as a framework) incorporate a protein, at least

HOLIDAY SEASON, A PRIMARY FOCUS IN LIFE FOR

LUNGES + SQUAT

NOW THAT WE'RE COMING OFF OF ANOTHER COUNTLESS PEOPLE IS TO GET BACK INTO (OR GET IN BETTER) SHAPE. I’ve always found success with my clients when we put a focus on the commitment first and then fill in the details as we go along. An excellent way to establish that commitment is to start with smaller blocks of time designated to your training. The following 15-minute booty blasting workout puts a primary focus on those glutes. This booty busting workout can be done at home or even on the road. The only equipment you’ll need is a chair.

HOW IT WORKS Start from the top and work down through the circuit 3X for a complete workout. If you want to increase the intensity and get a little bit of a cardio benefit, move from exercise to exercise without any defined rest interval! This workout can be done every other day to put a heavy focus on developing the glutes and complemented with a workout on opposite days that focus on a pulling motion. 1. LUNGES + SQUAT (X10) – ALTERNATE LUNGES AND SQUAT 2. HIP THRUSTERS (X10) – FROM THE FLOOR OR A COUCH 3. HIP SEQUENCE (20/20/15/15/10) Starting on your side 10 hip abductors / 10 knee drives (turn over to your stomach) 10 bent knee hip extensions / 10 leg swings *repeat for the opposite leg* 4. BETH BEDINGFIELD - OWNER // TRANSFORM COLORADO Q: SO LET’S LEARN A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOU. A: I’m a Colorado native. I moved to L.A. to go to school at Pepperdine where I ran track and cross-country. Fitness has always been a big part of my life, so when I was going through a period of not really

TRANSFORM COLORADO

knowing what I wanted to do and stumbled across the LaGree method. Q: HOW DID YOU STUMBLE ACROSS SOMETHING LIKE THIS? A: I walked by a studio and saw a sign advertising for your first class free. I went in, tried it and immediately became addicted and was certified two months later. I was asked to be a master instructor by the creator of this method — there are only five masters in the nation. Before I became a master instructor, I was training celebrities in L.A. Q: PLEASE, LET’S DO SOME NAME DROPPING. WHICH CELEBRITIES HAVE YOU TRAINED? A: I’ve trained two Victoria’s Secret models, Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima, Meghan Markle, Sofia Vergara, Hilary Duff, Hayden Panettiere, David Beckham, Kate Hudson and Calvin Harris. I trained Alessandra and Adriana privately for three years to get them ready for the fashion show. They’re so sweet. Q: HONESTLY, I’VE NEVER HEARD OF LAGREE BEFORE. A: You’d be surprised how many people come in and have never heard of it. It’s still so new. Q: WHAT EXACTLY IS IT? A: People think it’s pilates. It’s not. It’s its own patented method. It focuses on slow, controlled movements which work the muscle to failure by using time and tension, which is performed on a megaformer. But it’s also high-intensity and works all five components of fitness in each exercise. Q: WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THIS METHOD? A: My favorite part about this method is that there is absolutely no impact on your joints or spine whatsoever. It is very hard to injure yourself with this training as long as you’re doing it correctly. It’s strengthening and lengthening. It’s also just such a humbling workout because of its intensity. Q: DO YOU STILL RUN? A: I don’t run at all anymore since I’ve started LaGree. I had a lot of injuries from running, and honestly, I feel like I look better now than ever. Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE LIKE ME, A TOTAL BEGINNER, TO EXPECT COMING INTO A CLASS? A: Definitely do your research first so that you know what you’re getting into. Expect the most intense strength class of your life and always go at your own pace.

VINNIE LOPEZ - OWNER // VITAL STRENGTH & FITNESS Q: SO WHO IS VINNIE LOPEZ? A: I’m an ex mixed martial arts fighter, and I opened

VITAL STRENGTH & FITNESS

this gym shortly after I retired in 2013. It’s been my passion ever since. Q: WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR STYLE? A: It’s a very no-nonsense approach to getting better at life, not just in the gym. It’s sometimes aggressive, sometimes loving, but always full of truth and encouragement to be better than you were yesterday. I take a lot of the coaching that I had as a fighter, some of the best coaching in the world, and I have implemented it into my own style here at this gym and when I trained UFC fighters. Q: TELL ME ABOUT YOUR VITAL STRIKE CLUB. WHAT DOES THAT INVOLVE? A: Vital Strike Club is a fun, welcoming atmosphere to learn real-world techniques for combat and self-defense. We focus on striking, punching, kicking, elbows and knees — both how to throw them correctly and how to protect yourself. Q: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER FOUGHT IN THEIR LIFE, BUT WANTS TO LEARN? A: Come in with an open mind, a heart that’s ready to work and be patient because fighting is a science. It takes time. Q: HOW HAS FIGHTING CHANGED YOUR LIFE? A: When I found fighting and striking, it was literally a catalyst to save my life. It did something to me and gave me something to get good at and release inner demons. Q: WHAT DO YOU THINK THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION IS ABOUT FIGHTERS? A: Their temperament. Most of the fighters are very loving and are only aggressive when they have to be. CONTINUED >

CYCLEBAR LISA AND SAUL LOCKER - OWNERS // CYCLEBAR Q: HOW DID YOU FIND CYCLEBAR? A: (Lisa) We’re both workout enthusiasts. We travel quite a bit, and during our travels, we saw the excitement about SoulCycle and FlyWheel. We looked for something like that in Denver, but couldn’t find anything. We wanted boutique fitness, dark studios and high energy. That’s what brought us to the CycleBar franchise! Q: WHAT MAKES CYCLEBAR DIFFERENT THAN JUST A SPIN CLASS? A: (Saul) Most spin classes are tied to a gym. This is a separate entity. It’s personal. The stadium seating and loud music is unlike any spin class you may do. Our bikes are more advanced, and you can track your personal progress. Q: HOW BIG IS A TYPICAL CLASS? A: (Lisa) Each studio can hold 48-52 bikes, 52 being the max. It’s one large studio with great energy and loud music. Q: WHO ARE CYCLE STARS? A: (Lisa) Cycle Stars are our coaches. They’re cycle celebrities and are the ones who create and keep our following with their individual style and personality. Q: WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT SPINNING AND THIS CYCLEBAR VENTURE? A: (Lisa) You’re so busy in your day, every day. With CycleBar, you can have a blast and spin your brains out for 45 minutes to great music all with a common goal. Then you’re done. And you feel terrific. It’s that concept that excites me. Q: CYCLEBAR IS VERY COMMUNITY DRIVEN — HOW SO? A: (Saul) CycleBar is a community within itself. You become family. LET THE WALLS DO THE

TALKING DENVER LOCAL BATYA STEPELMAN IS HEADING THE WALLPAPER REVOLUTION

44

Cherry Creek Lifestyle | January 2018

W

ALLPAPER HAS BEEN HAVING A BIT OF A RENAISSANCE LATELY. Gone are the days of floral papers that remind you of your grandmother, replaced by a new era of unique designs, metallic finishes and independent designers. Batya Stepelman’s Denver-based

wallpaper boutique and design consultancy, WallTawk, is at the forefront of the revived trend. WallTawk

is

located

inside

Stepelman’s home, in the heart of historic Congress Park. The house was built in 1895 and now serves as

a single-family home, office and showroom. When Stepelman and her family first moved into the house, every

wall was painted the same beige, creating one giant blank canvas. Stepelman came up with the idea of using wallpaper as art. “Wallpaper, where it used to be a background design element, is now becoming a focal point,” says Stepelman. “People now decorate around wallpaper and using it as an anchor and treating it as art. I really feel like I’m putting art in my house with the wallpaper.” Throughout her home Stepelman has perfectly toed the line between updates and history, keeping her home true to its roots while bringing it into this century.

For Stepelman, that means bringing in lots of color and pattern, thrifting furniture items and buying new furniture in stages, waiting to find the perfect piece. The front sitting room holds one of three ordinal fireplaces in the home, covered with tile original to the home. Fittingly, there is beautiful, boldly patterned purple and blue floral wallpaper covering the back wall. Another focal point in her home is a wallpaper mural of a mountain range in the family room. According to Stepelman, that is the room that everyone mentions and wants to take pictures of. And for those too scared to dedicate themselves to a bold paper or an entire room covered inch to inch a pattern? Just dive right in and try it out. “I would say, take a little bit of color and a little bit of pattern, and don’t do something super crazy, do something that has a design and just do one wall, a feature wall,” Stepelman says. “Just do a feature wall, see how it makes you feel.” Check out what Stepelman's talking about at WallTawk.com | @walltawk CONTINUED >

HOW SHELBY HOLLY-PAGE IS RECLAIMING SELF-LOVE THROUGH PRACTICING YOGA AND WHY SHE’S NOT APOLOGIZING. ARTICLE MARLEY JERANKO | PHOTOGRAPHY DANIELLE WEBSTER CONTINUED >

INSPIRED BY

(CON TI N U ED)

THE FIRST TIME I MET SHELBY HOLLY-PAGE, SHE WAS FULLY NUDE. Yeah, you read right—zero clothes. You see, this isn’t such a rare sighting when it comes to the bald-headed, ultra-bendy, Instafamous yogi queen we know as Chocolate Yoga (@chocolate_yoga). For her, confidence is not lacking. And behind all that confidence, there’s yoga. MISSING FROM MAINSTREAM While attending school in Fairfield, Iowa, where yoga and meditation were incorporated into the classroom, Holly-Page realized that these practices could be useful tools for relaxation. “I was really interested in getting started, but I couldn’t afford yoga classes,” she says. Despite not even having a mat at the time, she was determined to learn. She did what likely many of us have done: turn on YouTube and prop up the computer in her living room. After following along for about an hour a day, “I eventually got the flow to where I could do it by myself without (videos).” But something big was missing from these resources. “Even when I typed in, ‘black women doing yoga,’ it all turned to white women,” she explains.” (I felt) like, ‘ok, I don’t really have anyone that looks like me to look up to.’” It was out of this frustration that gave rise to her Instagram account. “I wanted to be that person.” From 200 followers to 36,000, Holly-Page has been vocal about topics surrounding race, gender and sexuality—her platform serving as a space for more than just stretching her physical limits. A CELEBRATION OF SELF “I started practicing around the same time I shaved my head—which at the time, was this weird power for me and I think the clothes just came with it,” Holly-Page explains. “I started to love myself and appreciate my body and skin complexion so much more (because of it).” However, she admits that it has not been all love from the social media world. “I remember thinking, ‘do I be myself?’ Because people were telling me, ‘you have to be more cautious about what you say when you have a platform.’ “But then I thought, ‘No!—I’m going to let people decide if they like who I really am.’” Particularly, she says that, in a society that teaches us that nudity is sexual and therefore wrong, she wanted to take back the idea that nakedness is natural and beautiful—especially for women, and even more so black women, who she perceives as being shamed the most. “I’ve always been a huge advocate for encouraging other women to love their bodies, so I wanted to incorporate that message that I’m always preaching (into my Instagram).” Her advice to folks who are unsure if they can empower themselves through yoga: “Do it anyway. If you have a body, you have a yoga body.” 54

LOCAL’S CHOICE

Q&A WITH WE ASKED 28-YEAR-OLD OUTDOOR VOICES FOUNDER TYLER HANEY ABOUT HER BOULDER ROOTS, BIG BUSINESS AND WHAT IT MEANS TO USE YOUR OUTDOOR VOICE.

HAS GROWING UP IN BOULDER INFLUENCED OUTDOOR VOICES? Absolutely. Activity is baked into Boulder culture, and I grew up playing just about every sport. That focus on daily activity—whatever form it takes—is something that was instilled in me early on, and a lot of the inspiration behind Outdoor Voices. I created an activewear brand that isn’t about competition or performance; it’s about celebrating activity for the fun of it.

WHAT SEPARATES YOU FROM THE CROWD OF SPORTSWEAR? Other activewear brands are built around a credo to be better, faster, harder, stronger. We’re flipping that approach on its head, and redefining activity as something that can be fun, social, and with friends. We’re betting that more people want to be active, but they’re intimidated; our playful approach is really resonating.

EDUCATION OR INSTINCT WITH RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS? A little bit of both. I started OV right out of school, so a lot has been driven by instinct. I’ve been fortunate to bring on some really great partners and investors though, from Mickey Drexler to Kirsten Green, and an amazing team—all of whom I’ve learned a lot from.

HAVE YOU HAD ANY MENTORS OR TOOLS YOU’VE USED TO LAUNCH OV? My mom was the best kind of coach growing up, and she had this saying 'TYB, baby. Try your best, baby.' Whether she was sending me to school or soccer practice or a slumber party, she'd say 'TYB, baby!' It’s become our OV motto.

WHAT’S OV’S SIGNATURE STYLE? We’re known for our color blocking and our tonal tops and bottoms. We think of our apparel as a uniform for Doing Things—everything you need to get out and be active on a daily basis.

YOU DISLIKE THE WORD “ATHLEISURE” WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR BRAND. CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHY? Versatility is great, but everything we make is made to be sweat in. A lot of companies making athleisure are focused more on style than functionality.

IN A WORLD WHERE BRICK-AND-MORTAR IS DECLINING, WHAT ATTRACTS YOU TO OPENING SHOPS AROUND THE COUNTRY? OUTDOOR VOICES // OUTDOORVOICE.COM // @OUTDOORVOICES

Our shops are community hubs, and ways for us to bring people together around activities (like jogs, hikes, or dog walks). They’re also a place for people to touch and feel the product, and find the fit or style that’s best for them. It’s about meeting people and building relationships, and that off-line experience is amplified digitally.
