The "Crazy Days of Summer"
JULY 2015 publisher Denise Sundvold | DSundvold@LifestylePubs.com

hat ever happened to the “Lazy Days of Summer?” As a mom, I have found myself busier than ever in the summers. I am a human taxi service for my brood of kiddos who are not in school during the day. Basically, I am enjoying summer from the inside of my car as I wait in various carpool lines to drop off and pick up the kids from: football camp, swim/dive practice, college prep class, ukulele lessons and Parkway’s “Jumpstart to Kindergarten.” This is all before noon! Don’t get me wrong; I am not complaining. I enjoy it, actually. The car rides give me lots of opportunities to catch up on the latest music on the radio (that lyric just said WHAT?!), to have the captive audience several of our children- buckled in place (Children, let me tell you something…back when I was a kid…) and to think peacefully inbetween commutes (ahhh…a little “me” time)—when the car is empty, of course! Several of the children have observed and commented that they have to wake up earlier and that mornings are busier now than during the school year. I thought to myself, “You’re telling me?”

Though it’s “crazy busy,” I do feel very fortunate that Chesterfield offers so many activities for the children to stay involved with learning, lessons and sports during summer. We really look forward to the evenings and weekends after the daily morning scurry. A wonderful thing about living in Chesterfield is that during those free times there are so many fun places and events for us to explore and experience. After the “Crazy Days of Summer,” we all need a little unstructured time just to relax and play—outside of the car.

YOU GUESSED IT! Barrel Bob is Missouri's “spokesbarrel” for work zone safety. He is placed in high visibility around Missouri to remind commuters to drive carefully in work zones. When this photo was taken Barrel Bob was placed at the front entrance of the MODOT building in Chesterfield. Barrel Bob is 11 feet tall and made from recycled orange and white barrels. He was created in 2010 and was given to MODOT. He also has a sassy girlfriend named Barrel Betty. Several of our readers spotted Barrel Bob at the intersection of 141 and 40/64 in Kansas City in 2010 as part of the kcICON project. Barrel Bob is now the official Missouri spokesbarrel for work zone safety. A special thanks to all of our readers who took the time to write; keep those guesses coming! FIESTA! Modern Mexican Cuisine AUTHENTIC, FRESH AND DELICIOUS
ARTICLE LIBBY MULLEN | PHOTOGRAPHY JOHN BABB
F
IESTA! Modern Mexican Cuisine offers the most authentic and freshest Mexican food I have ever tasted-- period. Come to find, there is a special reason for that. Roger Aguirre, co-owner/general manager/head chef for FIESTA! has been cooking authentic Mexican food since he was a child. “I grew up cooking with my mother, Julia, in Mexico," Aguirre says. "We had six children in our family and I helped my mother cook and learned how to prepare all of the recipes with fresh ingredients. I started cooking in restaurants when I was 13." FIESTA! Modern Mexican Cuisine is located in the Hilltown Shopping Center; don’t let the exterior fool you into missing out an amazing and upscale dining experience. It has been said “it is what’s on the inside that counts.” Be sure to make your way inside FIESTA! and prepare to be impressed. When you enter FIESTA! you will appreciate the relaxing ambiance provided by low lighting and soft music. Parchment paper pendant lights provide a soft glow over comfortably cushioned booths; the surrounding décor is modern and sleek with stone, hardwoods and a neutral color palette. As soon as we were seated we were met with a warm smile, multicolored chips and fresh, flavorful salsa. FIESTA! prepares fresh tortilla chips, daily. “The chips come to us raw and we cook them fresh each day,” Aguirre says. “We make our own salsa every day, roasting the tomatoes and adding the other ingredients—all fresh.” Their salsa

is delicious and has just the right amount of kick to it. It won’t make your brow sweat but it keeps your taste buds interested. FIESTA! offers all of your traditional favorite Mexican dishes—burritos, enchiladas, chimichangas, quesadillas, fajitas –and for the more adventurous diner, a variety of original dishes, created by Roger, have modern twists in the recipes. “We are going to be adding four new, original dishes to the menu (so new they are not even not named yet), my creations, I want everyone to come in and try something new,” says Aguirre. “I love food and I love cooking and coming up with new recipes and combinations.” Delicious soups, creative salads and hardy appetizers are also served. One thing that all of the dishes have in common is that they are all prepared daily with the freshest ingredients that are often purchased from local vendors. You can literally taste the difference fresh vegetables and herbs make and that makes FIESTA! unique. A favorite of many patrons is the Alambres –grilled steak, poblano pepper, bacon, pineapple, Chihuahua cheese, cilantro and onions served on 4 tortillas—are also called “Street Tacos.” These were almost too pretty to eat and the meat was melt-in- your- mouth tender. The steak and chicken is always double-marinated and so very tender and juicy. Further proof of that process was the scrumptious chicken that was in our Pollo Poblano; the poblano peppers were the greenest ones I have ever seen. FIESTA!’s cuisine is presented on gorgeous melon colored plates; the f latware is very substantial and hammered stain-

less steel. FIESTA!’s delicious food served on quality dinnerware is worthy of a celebration. In order to celebrate, I ordered a Mango Daiquiri. It was most enjoyable and refreshing—and large. Speaking of drinks, FIESTA! is rumored to have the best Margaritas in town; they also serve a “Skinny Margarita.” FIESTA! serves top shelf liquors, domestic and imported beers and over 30 types of tequilla. A great time to visit FIESTA! to celebrate for yourself is during their Happy Hours, every Monday-Thursday from 3-7 p.m., when they offer drink specials.
FIESTA! offers a delicious, fine-dining experience at a very affordable cost (entrees $11-$13.) Fun in the Sun Can Lead to Danger Down the Road ARTICLE DEREK MARTINEZ | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

id you know that up to 90 percent of skin changes that people think are related to aging are actually from the sun? Excessive sun exposure can also lead to skin cancers. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. There are three types of cancer that are most commonly discussed: Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common skin cancer with about one million cases per year. While rarely fatal, it can be very disfiguring. Squamous Cell Carcinoma is another common form of skin cancer, with about 250,000 cases and 2,500 deaths per year. Melanoma is the most serious skin cancer; it is less common than basal or squamous cell cancers, however Melanoma occurrences are growing faster than any other kind of cancer. Melanoma is often found in white men, but it also affects younger women with fair skin or with many moles. If detected early, the survival rate is nearly 99 percent. For the past several years, many healthcare professionals have been stressing the dangers of using tanning beds, in relation to the risk of developing melanoma. However, according to recent research, that message may not be getting through to many women. A report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that between 25 and 30 percent of young white women reported using an indoor tanning facility during the past year. Research has shown that tanning before the age of 35 increases risk of melanoma of up to 75 percent. Tanning before the age of 25 doubles the risk of melanoma. Melanomas occur most frequently in people with light colored hair or iris eye color because their skin is more susceptible to ultraviolet light rays. Women that freckle and burn eas16

ily have an increased risk. Women who have a large number of moles (greater than 25) are also melanoma-prone. Treatment for melanoma usually involves surgically removing the cancerous skin cells and some normal tissue that surrounds the cancer site. If the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes, they may also need to be removed. Subsequent chemotherapy or immunotherapy may also be needed. What should you look for? Use the "ABCDE" method: · Asymmetry: Melanomas generally have a shape that is not even on both sides. If you pictured the spot folded in half the sides would not match. · Border Irregularity: The border of the spot is irregular and often notched. It may have a jagged appearance. · Color variation: Although melanomas are usually dark brown or black, they may sometimes have a range of colors including: tan, brown, blue, pink or white. · Diameter: Eventually melanomas become larger than ordinary moles. Any pigmented spot greater than 6 millimeters (the size of a regular pencil eraser) in diameter should be examined and watched carefully. · Evolution: Some early melanomas begin to increase in size, elevation, color or sensation. A lesion that begins to change in this fashion should be checked immediately. Melanoma in advanced stages is difficult to treat. Avoid the urge to visit the tanning salons and use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. If you experience any of the “ABCDE” signs, seek medical advice. anners matter. We always want children to be polite; manners become even more important during the summer. Often times large amounts of children, who no longer have the structure of the school day, are gathered in unstructured situations. Summer is the perfect time to pick places to attend as a family and explain appropriate behaviors before you head out. Kids love to succeed; they need to know the rules and have clear expectations in order to be successful. When it is beautiful outside, we may go the Chesterfield Family Aquatic Center or Faust Park. When it is raining, we might go to Chesterfield Mall or a see or a movie at Galaxy 14. These can be fun and memorable times for our families but an intended good time can quickly go south when manners are abandoned.
18
Chesterfield Lifestyle | July 2015
The sooner you begin having the expectation of manners with your children, the sooner they will rise to the occasion. Don't let working on manners trouble you this summer. Focus on four or five things that will help make this summer the best one yet. 1. Expect children to use "Please and Thank You." Refrain from giving your children something unless they have asked politely and expressed thanks. With consistency, this will become second nature for your children. 2. Encourage children to ask for something ONE time and to accept the answer whether it is "yes, no or maybe." 3. Children should respect adults and follow the rules established for a party or event. If parents express how “stupid” they think a rule is, kids will pick up on this and be less likely to be respectful. 4. Save running for outside. Kids love to run. Remind them to stay seated in a restaurant, stay with you at the mall and to be careful of others even at an outdoor venue. It is a safety issue and a manners issue. 5. Remind children to use their "inside voices." Yelling inside any building takes away the peace and enjoyment of others. It works best to remind children before entering rather than trying to quiet then down after you are inside. To encourage good manners, set up a simple reward system. Placing marbles in a small glass jar works wonders for motivation. Maybe someone complimented them on their positive behavior at a restaurant or at the pool, maybe you heard them using "please and thank you" consistently or maybe you saw them put the needs of someone else ahead of their own. Place a marble in the jar each time. When the jar is full, do something special together to celebrate; Taking the children out to eat at a nice restaurant, having a movie night or going on a day trip to visit someplace new are all great reward experiences. Good manners are a good habit. Manners make the world a more pleasant place. When parents encourage practice and reward successes when their children are young, these good habits will be evident as they grow.

I
love the Chesterfield Parks and take full advantage of them all. I recently took a walk with my husband at the River's Edge Park. I love that this park offers a soft trail and I can enjoy the wildflowers and wildlife while walking around the lake. I have bird watched there and enjoy taking photos of the nature I see. I took another hike at River’s Edge Park; the wildflowers had just started to open. It is a wonderful, natural (not cultivated) park for those who want a quiet short walk in nature. A two-mile loop (2030 minute walk depending upon your speed) around the lake. It has a soft path that is mostly shaded except at midday when sun is directly overhead. The path is great for older couples who might like a slower pace on things…It’s also good for morning bird watching or fishing (catch and release). I have always loved the outdoors and have a passion for hiking, so I started taking photos of nature. I have always been overwhelmed by the beauty that surrounds us and mostly goes unnoticed in the “hustle-bustle” of our lives, so...I try to stop and "smell the roses" and encourage others to do so, too. I love that photography can capture a moment that evokes some type of moment, and then later you can relive that moment's emotion over and over by looking at the photos. Question Mark Butterfly When my kids were little, I used to take them on hikes in parks, woods, trails, and creek beds and told them to look for treasures....our version of treasures were the kind of things I now take pictures of. I see people walk through parks or on trails all of the time since I am a

hiker myself, rarely do I ever see them notice "the little things.” People will notice a deer or snake that crosses their path or notice that there are, in general, wildflowers or a fluttering butterfly/moth along the way, but they rarely stop to LOOK at the flowers, smell them, check out the pollinators, or other little treasures that are there if they just looked. Nature is beautiful, both big and small. River’s Edge Park is a great place to “stop and smell the roses”...a park for people who like to stroll…lots of “little things” to see for those who like to watch for nature's tiny treasures. If I were still a scout leader or parent of young children, I would take this photo feature to River's Edge Park and supply a copy to each of the kids, along with a marker, and send them on a hunt to find the things in the photos and circle the ones they find. Now that my youngest is off to college I hope to have more time to do the traveling, outdoor activities and creative hobbies that I enjoy and to figure out what I want to do when I grow up; I have always enjoyed taking photos. I am not a professional photographer; I just love to take photos and I love to share them with others. *Elaine Collins has been a resident of the Chesterfield area for 22 years and is a big fan of the “little things” in our Chesterfield parks. Picnic and Play Chesterfield Parks Offer Something for Everyone ARTICLE MARY SHAPIRO | PHOTOGRAPHY JOHN BABB
P
arks in Chesterfield – from big to small, from passive parks with trails to active ones with lots of action and amenities - offer something for everyone. That’s according to Mike Whelan, a member of the city’s Parks and Recreation Citizens Advisory Committee, and a recent volunteer at a fishing derby in Central Park for about 50 kids ages 15 and under. “I’ve been in the city about 13 years, and I’m a fishing junkie, so I’m really glad the new River’s Edge Park just opened and that the lake at Central Park is now open to catch and release fishing,” Whelan says. “I also really enjoy the amphitheater in Central Park and I go to as many events there as I can such as movies or concerts. My wife and I take advantage of the levee trail. It’s so neat to be able to see all the green space Chesterfield still has.” Mike Geisel, director of Public Services for the City, and Tom McCarthy, director of Parks, Recreations and Arts, recently highlighted some of the most popular parks facilities offered by the community. CHESTERFIELD VALLEY ATHLETIC COMPLEX
The Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex is the largest park in the city at just over 225 acres. Opened in 1999 at 17925 North Outer 40 Road, it has numerous athletic fields – 16 softball/baseball fields, as well as 13 multi-sport fields of different sizes used for soccer, lacrosse, football, and even ultimate frisbee with a fully accessible Miracle Field and pickle ball played in a separate location in the complex, along with 14 additional practice fields. “We estimate well over a million visitors come there each year,” Geisel says. As of August when three more fields are added, there will be 25 of the fields lit to allow play at night. The facility is solely operated by the City, and its largest user groups are the Chesterfield Baseball and Softball Association, Ascension Soccer, and the Chesterfield Football Association. All fields are grass with the exception of the fully-accessible Miracle Field which is available to those of all abilities and has a surface called Mondo, a rubberized material which is helpful to those with mobility issues and makes it easier to operate walkers and wheelchairs on those. “We’re looking at doing some hybrid fields that are synthetic and grass on a trial basis to see how it works out,” McCarthy says. Fields are constantly busy. Recently, a Real Madrid soccer camp was going on as well as a kinetic body flight experience, which 22

simulates the experience of skydiving without having to jump out of a plane. Part of the Pedal the Cause fundraising bike ride will go through the complex as part of the course on Sept. 27. RIVER’S EDGE
The City’s newest park is River’s Edge, on 198 acres and which opened in April of this year north of and behind the Taubman Prestige Outlet Mall near the Missouri River. “It’s been a surprisingly popular park, almost overwhelmingly,” Geisel says. The park offers a floating dock and a pavilion as well as walking trails. Many users go there to enjoy fishing, paddle boarding, bird watching and walking. It’s a wetland preserve area bounded by conservation easements and no motorized vehicles are allowed. Visitors must park on the Prestige Outlets lot in a designated area on the far west end. “Canoeing and kayaking groups regularly use it, and we have paddleboard and kayak classes and are working with the Alpine Shop to do some kayak races there later this year,” McCarthy says. CENTRAL PARK
Central Park, on both Lydia Hill Drive and Veterans Place Drive, was the first city park property purchased, opening on 43 acres in 1997, after voters approved an $11 million parks bond issue in 1994. Geisel says the park’s main components are the amphitheater, the family aquatic center, and various art works scattered throughout the park. McCarthy describes some of the improvements. “There’s now a fully accessible playground on which we just put new surfacing through a St. Louis County municipal park grant,” McCarthy says. Central Park also offers walking trails, two stream walks, a lake, and pavilions. “Another feature that’s been good for the community is the linear park along Veterans Place Drive, which is set up for street festivals,” Geisel says. McCarthy says that, for the Taste of St. Louis last year alone, about 200,000 people visited. “We’ve just started our newest free Sounds of Summer concert series and will have a new orchestra music series at the amphitheater,” McCarthy says. “We also do a summer movie series at the amphitheater.” Folks like Whelan can enjoy catch and release fishing throughout the summer. And the aquatic complex features a lazy river, water slides and competition pool. EBERWEIN PARK
Eberwein Park opened in 2012 on 18.5 acres at the intersection of Highcroft Drive and Old Baxter Road. A popular main feature of the park is the 2.5 acre dog park. “We average about 800 dog tags to use the dog park per year, and limit users to only Chesterfield residents,” Geisel says. “In the first year of the park, due to the dog park usage, we had to expand the size of the parking lot three times.” CONTINUED >

PICNIC AND PLAY (CONTINUED)
Also well used at the park is a community garden with 53 individual garden plots. There’s a wait list for plots each year. “We now have 84 people on the waiting list and are working on establishing another community garden area on additional land in either another park or other site,” McCarthy says. A person will rent a four-byeight-foot plot and raised bed each year. “We till it, bring in topsoil and provide water and a fenced enclosure,” Geisel says. “Our first priority when renting out plots each year goes to prior year rentals, and people can raise whatever they want – flowers, vegetables or any legal crop,” Geisel says. The park originally was the property of the Eberwein family which farmed the area for many years. “We have kept the almost-100-year old Eberwein barn that the City restored and created a walk through area,” Geisel says. “We put a split rail fence around the property, also to try to retain the original farm feel.” Users can also take advantage of walking trails and a large open play field. A grant this year will let the City do some restoration work on a park pond and create a small nature observation deck there. “We do Yappy Hours periodically at the dog park - a Halloween themed Yappy Hour is coming up in October – as a socializing event for dogs and owners,” McCarthy says. “We have a 7 O’clock Club out there, where people who enjoy dogs meet each morning and develop friendships.”
WILLIAM F. DIERBERG MEDITATION PARK
A small but beautiful park is two-acre William F. Dierberg Meditation Park, at 13701 Olive Blvd., at River Valley Drive and Olive. The City worked in and around the adjacent Montgomery Bank development to put the park in. “It features a large water fountain built by a Dierberg family donation, as well as a paved walking trail and seating areas to let people relax,” Geisel says. The City maintains various kinds of native plants there to aid in attracting butterflies. CHESTERFIELD PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PARKS
A unique cooperative park project includes the city’s public school parks, operated in conjunction with the Rockwood and Parkway school districts. They’re located at Chesterfield, Green Trails and River Bend Elementary Schools. “These parks are on the school campuses but are made available to the public after hours,” Geisel explains. “We contributed to the capital improvement costs to make the playgrounds available to the broader community, but ongoing maintenance is the responsibility of the school districts." All are less than an acre and were completed in the late 1990s. All those parks feature playground equipment like swings and slides. MONARCH CHESTERFIELD LEVEE AND RIPARIAN TRAIL
The City’s Monarch Chesterfield Levee and the Riparian Trail get lots of users. The levee trail, at a little over nine miles and open since 2004, is
along the Missouri River in Chesterfield valley and behind the Chesterfield Commons retail development, however, McCarthy says parts of it are closed for now due to the new bridge on Interstate 64 going in over the river. The Riparian Trail opened in 2011 and extends about a half mile, from Lydia Hill and Veterans Place, to loop into woods and come back out on Lydia Hill Drive. “The levee trail is asphalt and was done cooperatively with the Great Rivers Greenway Organization, while the Riparian Trail has a compacted rock surface,” McCarthy says. Michelle Keesal, Chair of the Parks and Recreation Citizens Advisory Committee, is also passionate about parks in Chesterfield. “My degree is in Recreation and Park Administration, and I’m retired from being a planner with St. Louis County Parks; parks are my passion,” she says. “Being a Chesterfield resident for the last 20 years, it was only natural I get involved with their parks program.” She, too, praises the variety of park activities. “I love the concerts at the Central Park Amphitheater, and I try get to as many as I can. The River’s Edge Park has a really nice trail that goes around the lake, where people can watch birds or reflect or get some great exercise. If the weather is nice, I like to take my bike out and ride the levee trail. Though I don’t have a dog anymore, I love to go to the Eberwein Dog Park and watch the dogs play. It’s hard to believe we have so many park amenities and so much wilderness park areas in Chesterfield."

BEATING THE HEAT HISTORIC SUMMERS IN CHESTERFIELD
ARTICLE AIMEE PELLET | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
I
ronically, we think of summer as a time for fun and relaxation when kids are free from the restraints of school and homework. However, for many of Chesterfield’s early residents in the farm trade, summer was the season of the most work. In fact, children today have the children of early farmers to thank for having summers of freedom. Summers were a time when families needed every pair of hands to help with labor-intensive farm work. Since most of the country’s small towns revolved around agriculture, schools found it easier just to stop the school year for several months until farm work tapered off after the harvest. That doesn’t mean that people didn’t take a bit of time for relaxation, even though some pleasures of summer were born out of necessity. Picnics to us seem a nostalgic luxury. Years ago, they were a means to beat the heat, since homes without air-conditioning could often be stifling; if cooking was taking place in the home, the temperatures could rise even more. Can you imagine the humid, often-oppressive heat of a St. Louis summer with no air-conditioning and then being required to light a fire in a wood burning stove to cook every meal? For this reason, it was common for homes years ago to have a “summer kitchen.” My great-grandparents’ farm had one, as did many of the neighboring farms. It was a small but completely separate building with a kitchen that allowed the heat from a wood cook stove to remain removed from the main house; outdoor kitchens also prevented entire homes from burning down in the event of a kitchen fire. Communities, families or courting couples would gather for picnics to take advantage of any natural outdoor breeze. Fish fries were also a frequent event—a community potluck picnic born out of someone’s good fortune fishing in the nearby Missouri River. I even remember these events from my childhood, when adults would gather to talk and children to play. In fact, it always seemed a little surprising that my dad and the rest of the farmers would actually take an afternoon off from work. What would a picnic be without ice cream? In the early days having ice cream at home meant the laborious process of making it yourself. Many homes had hand-crank ice cream machines. A mixture of eggs, cream, sugar, and vanilla were placed in a central cylinder with a paddle
inside. The outer chamber was filled with ice and salt, which would drop the temperature of the custard mixture. In the very early years, because it required ice, it was more likely to be an early summer treat, while ice was still available from the icehouse. No matter how well constructed an icehouse might be, it rarely kept ice fully intact throughout an entire summer. People would take turns turning a large crank to keep the mixture from completely freezing to the sides of the metal cylinder. This process often turned into a social event of its own. Of course, anyone who has tried homemade ice cream after cranking that handle and patiently waiting knows that every quickly-melting mouthful is worth it. Similar to today, quick weekend getaways were popular, particularly in the years after farming became more mechanized and recreation became a bit more commonplace. Swimming, grilling out, fishing or taking a boat out on one of Missouri’s many lakes were all popular activities. Creve Coeur Lake made for a closer day on the water and it was a destination of its own with boat races and summer festivals dating back to 1881. It touted itself as a summer resort and attracted families from throughout the St. Louis area. Technology and fashions may have changed. Most of us know the pleasures of an air-conditioned home. Now we can have ice cream from electric ice cream makers or a quick trip to the grocery store. However, it doesn’t mean we should take away the simple summer joys of gathering with friends for a summertime picnic or meeting them for a dip in the neighborhood pool. I challenge you to try a hand-crank ice cream churn at your next get together. If you have memories, comments or suggestions for future topics, please email Aimee at aimee@thehistorychick.com

f you’re thinking about summer travel plans and fear you won’t be able to take a last-minute getaway, it’s not too late to lock in great fares and rates for some amazing destinations. Riviera Maya, Cancun or Puerto Vallarta in Mexico--Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica are always favorites for Chesterfield families because of the non-stop charter flights available out of St. Louis. Taking a Cruise, visiting Disney or planning something even more adventurous like an African Safari are also popular options. There are three elements to ensuring a great vacation: Decide where you want to go, figure out how to get there and where to stay, and determine what you want to see and do once you arrive. With little time to research and plan before the start of school, it’s a great idea to call an experienced travel agent who can give you the best resort and destination choices and most current flight availability. Most everyone has a dream trip in mind. It could be across an ocean or closer to home, on a cruise ship or at a beachfront resort. Maybe there’s a place you’ve longed to see ever since you were a kid, or a spot you visited years ago and want to return to show your own children? Perhaps there is a romantic location you and your significant other have wanted to experience in person ever since you saw it in a movie? Engaging a travel agent can open doors to visiting those places and even

someplace you hadn’t even considered until you learn about it during a consultation. Once you’ve chosen a destination, focus next on transportation and lodging. Is a nonstop, charter flight--better if you’re traveling with young children and don’t want to spend all day traveling? Will you need to rent a car and what size? Since it will be your "home away from home" during the trip, deciding what you want from a hotel or resort is important. Do you need a large pool or a variety of restaurants onsite? Would you prefer an all-inclusive where all food, drink, entertainment and non-motorized water sports are included? Would you prefer to be able to step outside and be in the middle of shopping, dining and attractions, or would you prefer a quieter spot? The weeks leading up to a trip are filled with anticipation. Put that excitement to good use by researching the "can’t-miss"attractions. If possible, buy tickets before you go to save money and time waiting in line. Wherever you go, summer is a time for outdoor events of all kinds. Find free or low-cost things that the whole family will enjoy. For example, many places have free concerts, festivals or walking tours. But don’t let the itinerary be your only guide. At least once during your vacation, try something new! Choose a new recreational activity, dine at restaurant that serves cuisine you’ve never eaten, attend a sporting event/ performance you might not necessarily attend at home; make memories!
“Personality can open doors, but only character can keep them open.” -Elmer G. Letterman
Just be adaptable and give yourself room to breathe. When you have a short amount of time, it’s natural to want to try and see as much as possible. Remember, there is nothing wrong with slowing down and relaxing on the beach or by the pool, sitting in a café and watching the world go by or taking in a spectacular sunset. It’s the quiet, beautiful moments that you’ll remember as much as the jam-packed ones. Whether your travel plans involve going solo or with friends/loved ones and getting away for one week or two, a travel agent has the expertise to help you plan your vacation with an eye on your budget. Most people don't realize that they don't pay extra for this travel expertise; in fact, utilizing a travel agent will end up saving money, time and hassle. Services include: picking from a wide array of lodging choices, figuring out the best route for reaching your destination, and recommending the experiences that will make the memories of your trip linger long after you’ve returned home.

Parting Thoughts
“Aqua Fear” SHARKS, MINNOWS AND WATER, OH MY! WORDS PATRICK LATOUR
O
f all the wonderful summer memories that will remain in our hearts, none will make the list of everlasting memories like the memories we obtained as a child. Out of all my childhood summer memories, my biggest accomplishment was learning how to swim. Yes, what seemed so simple for others was my greatest fear. Pools were terrifying enough, but I knew a trip to the river would be my demise. What could be lurking in that water? What if the current swept me away? Why would anyone think this is fun? With all of these thoughts racing through my little mind, I sat on the bank baking in the sun as everyone cooled off in the river and enjoyed the day. I thought, "Maybe I should have jumped in the water and faced my fears." Determined to have fun with everyone else, I stood up and inched my way closer to the river water. The closer I got the more potent the fish smell became and the cooler my skin felt as the breeze bounced off of the river water. I took a deep breath and took six quick steps into the water, stopping as the cold river water touched my knee caps. “This isn’t so bad," I told myself as my heart rate slowed. Suddenly I felt something nip at my calf. I looked down to see hundreds of little creatures (minnows) feeding on my legs! I ran back to dry land as fast as I could and swore to myself that I would never step foot in the river again. I was determined to rid myself of this marvelous maids_Layout 1 6/12/15 4:04 PM Page 1 "aqua fear" and join the fun. Through that winter I convinced myself that in the coming summer I would overcome my fears. Nothing was going to stop me from making a splash...until I saw the movie Jaws for the first time that is. I was back to square one. The very next summer my family took the annual trip to the river; I was ready. I packed my water wings, goggles, a life vest and knee high socks-- for "minnow defense"of course. Pulling up to the
river I could again smell the fishy water and hear the echo of laughter bouncing off of the cliff. My three older brothers raced from the car and dove right in the river. I had to suit up first. I went to the back of the car to get my supplies only to discover I had left my bag at the house. Great, now I would spend the day at the river sitting on the rocks and baking in the sun. Standing by the car and bummed out, I heard my big brother call my name. “Come on in!” he yelled as he stood waste deep in the water. I shook my head, crossed my arms and leaned against the car. A few moments later my oldest brother came out of the river and walked up to me. “Come on, I got you!” He took my hand and slowly inched his way to the water with me. As I stood ankle deep in the water, checking for piranhas, my brother quickly picked me up and walked me deeper into the water. Scared for my life, screaming at the top of my lungs my brother dropped me into the water. My other two brothers cheered as I emerged from the depth. “See, it’s not so bad!” You know what? It wasn’t. The water was cool and no sharks! “No its not bad at all!” I yelled to my brother as I splashed him in the face, inevitably starting my very first splash fight.
