Editor’s Letter

Prettify your palaces. Decorate your home; it gives the illusion that your life is more interesting than it is. --Charles M. Schultz

SEPTEMBER 2015 publisher Denise Sundvold | DSundvold@LifestylePubs.com

editor

This quote, though tongue-in-cheek, (made by a man most of us would agree had a great sense of humor) gave me a lot to think about regarding this month’s “Home Sweet Home” issue. What does it really mean to “decorate” our homes? The literal definition of “decorate” is: To make something more attractive by adding extra items or images to it. Synonyms: adorn, embellish, add to, garnish, furnish, enhance, grace…and my new personal favorite, PRETTIFY. We all know that what is considered “more attractive” varies with individual tastes and preferences; we have all heard it said that, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” So, when it comes to decorating our homes we should choose the colors, textures, materials and looks that we each love and make our surroundings comfortable and pleasant. In this issue, dedicated to the HOME, you can discover new and different ways to decorate your home and even get some ideas and help for doing just that. *To enhance and embellish your entry, read about “Dream Doors” on page 20. * To grace and garnish your “grub-hub” with new cooking ideas, find out about the Taste of St. Louis on page 24. * To furnish and finish your fireplace, learn about how to “Leave No Stone Unturned” on page 34. * To adorn or add to your home’s interior, discover “Directions In Design” on page 12.

ON THE COVER Chesterfield residents, Lee and Clare Renz, recently had Scobis Company create and install custom, Sapele Mahogany front-entry doors on their home. The gorgeous, arched doors are decorated with iron scrolls and were custom designed to feature, insulated glass panels that can open inwardly while the doors remain closed. “I thought of that feature and Scobis created the doors to include my idea,” says Clare Renz. CHESTERFIELD LIFESTYLE CORRECTIONS We apologize for an error that was made during the printing process in the "Decorate Close to Home" article in our August 2015 issue. The caption for the picture that features the executives of The Queens' Jewels was incorrect. It should read " Janine Vires & Candice Cherry." Candice Cherry is the CJO (Chief Jeweled Officer) of The Queens' Jewels and Janine Vires is the CJFO (Chief Jeweled Financial Officer) of the company which makes unique and beautiful jeweled wine glasses. YOU GUESSED IT! August’s Mystery Picture is a photo of the red metal sculpture tucked away in the parking lot entrance to the U.S. Bank building at the northwest corner of Baxter and Clarkson Roads. It was so tucked away that for the first time, in over a year, no readers were able to correctly identify last month’s Mystery Pic. A special thanks to all of our readers who took the time to write; keep those guesses coming!

MONTHLY MYSTERY PICTURE: WHAT IS IT? Each month a Mystery Picture will be included at the end of Around Town. The Mystery Picture is a photo of something in Chesterfield; the picture may depict a close-up view or be taken from a unique vantage point. The answer to “What is it?” will be included in the next month’s issue of Chesterfield Lifestyle, along with a new Mystery Picture to solve. Readers are encouraged to submit one guess per month to LMullen@LifestylePubs.com. The first readers to submit an email, correctly identifying the subject of the Mystery Picture, will be given the opportunity to have their name included in the next month’s issue. Chesterfield is home to many hidden treasures, and we want to encourage you to always be exploring and discovering new things around town!

JANE GANZ AND DESIGN STAFF CELEBRATE 40 YEARS OF AWARD-WINNING DESIGN SERVICES

12

Chesterfield Lifestyle | September 2015

Ganz ASID, president of Directions In Jane Design, is a 30-year resident of Chesterfield and an avid reader of Chesterfield Lifestyle. Directions In Design is nationally recognized as a premiere interior architecture/interior design firm specializing in residential, commercial, hospitality, marine, senior living and healthcare interior environments. This year, Directions In Design celebrates 40 years of providing excellent, award-winning design services to thousands of satisfied clients. Directions In Design was founded in 1975, when Jane had the dream of branching out on her own and she began providing interior design services for a St. Louis home builder. Prior to starting Directions in Design, one of the first woman-owned enterprises (WBE) in St. Louis, Jane was working as a commercial designer for a well-known office furnishings group. Jane’s residential project experience encompasses 3,500+ primary and vacation homes. “What you faintly imagine we vividly portray. Our residential designers at Directions In Design can make all of your visions for your home come true. Whether your style is rich traditional, interesting eclectic or soft contemporary, our ASID-affiliated staff has the talent and experience to make the planning and decorating process enjoyable and problem free,” says Ganz. Directions In Design boasts one of the largest in-house materials library which enables them to select carpeting, wallcoverings, furniture, artwork and accessories from a wide array of manufacturers. The sheer volume of their business and long-standing positive relationships with their vendors allows them to extend excellent discounts to clients. In addition, a flexible, phased approach allows residential clients to gradually acquire treasured furnishings and accessories. A local residential client shared, “We worked with Jane Ganz on our kitchen update. Jane took the time to learn our style, turned around a beautiful design quickly, and on budget. During the initial consultation, Jane also made practical suggestions for other areas of our home, which we plan to implement as time allows. Her style is impeccable and her professionalism is admirable. We highly recommend!”

Good design blends beauty with practicality. By using color, architectural elements, textures, patterns, lighting and furniture, their designers are able to offer options which reflect your personality and the lifestyle of your family. Directions In Design can help with redecorating one room or facilitate the planning and design process for complete renovation or new construction of a custom residence. Interior designers with Directions In Design will offer fresh approaches to the planning process. Another residential client shared, “We have done several projects with Jane at our home in St. Louis and our condo in Naples, Florida, and we love them both. At one time we considered moving but used Jane and her skills instead to renovate and redecorate and boy, was that the right decision!” Directions In Design is still growing. That is a very strong indicator that Jane’s decision to open her own design business was a great one that has allowed her to help so many people to be surrounded by environments that they love. "Everyone asks me, when did I know that I wanted to be an interior designer," said Ganz. "I was a high school freshman when I was assigned to write a term paper on a career. There were many to choose from, but interior design sounded interesting. I was fortunate enough to interview highly successful interior designer Don Pisoni. He inspired me to the point I pledged to make interior design my career. Years ago, when Don was thinking about taking a little more time off from his firm, so I invited him to join Directions In Design, so he could design more and manage less. I give Don credit for showing me that you can make a career of doing what you love and improve people’s lives. I encourage our staff to participate in career days and help our youth turn what they love doing into a career. I thank our talented staff and all of our wonderful clients who have made this 40th year celebration possible." Jane Ganz and the design team at Directions in Design can help you transform your Chesterfield residence into your dream home. Look around your home. What are some things you wish you could change? Do you desire a more spacious feeling living area? Would like your home to be more conducive to the "traffic" flow? Would you like your home to become a better "fit" for your current or changing lifestyle? Or, perhaps you would like to update the look and lines of the entire interior of your home? Directions In Design is ready to help you plan and achieve your ideal living space, in Chesterfield. Jane encourages Chesterfield Lifestyle readers to contact Directions in Design for a FREE Consultation.

CLASSIC COMFORT FARE IN CHESTERFIELD

Hot Spot

A

n August thunderstorm was upon us in thick sheets on Highway 40/61 near the Missouri River. Drivers around us flashed hazard lights and slowed to a crawl as the rain pooled up on overpasses. As if to legitimize our sudden doubt of the car’s grip on terra firma, a flash flood warning bleated urgently through the cell phone. There is exhilarating adventure, and then there is deadly adventure. We weren’t sure which kind we were having at that point, so we decided to wait out the storm and take refuge, for a late supper, at Bishop’s Post. It was our first time there; I assure you, it won’t be our last. The hostess welcomed us warmly into the smartly appointed interior. We considered having a seat in the stylishly modern bar near a contented pair of local ladies chatting over wine, but decided instead to sink into one of the plush booths in the dining room. Muted earth tones and dark wood accents lent an aura of calming elegance to the crisp design, and though the rainfall was still quite heavy, our view of the stone waterfall on the large patio only bolstered the effect. Our enthusiastic server proffered the menu and wine list with a bright smile. We wanted to stay sharp for a potentially challenging drive home, but took a long look at the stellar collection of wines by the glass and bottle-- including an auxiliary list of special vintages and large format bottles. Judging by the large selection on offer from esteemed West Coast and international vineyards, it’s obvious that some serious thought and effort went into curating the wine list. Our appetizers arrived briskly. A healthy mound of mixed vegetable tempura with chipotle remoulade came right behind three massive bacon-wrapped shrimp. A zesty honey and red chili glaze mingled seamlessly with the deep smoky notes of the bacon, but neither dared overwhelm the perfectly succulent jumbo shrimp. There was a mild kick of chili to the tempura batter as well, but not enough to eclipse the freshness and vitality of large-cut summer vegetables. Next, arrived the classic wedge salad and Cajun gumbo, both true to form. A flawless pyramid of refreshing Iceberg lettuce swaddled in house-made bleu cheese dressing hardly requires embellishment other than cracked pepper; this one also came with fresh CONTINUED >

bacon crumbles and tomato. The gumbo was essentially large morsels of fish and shellfish in a velvety roux broth, richly scented with aromatic thyme and the requisite sassafras. A reverent nod to the appearance of an unexpected oyster is in order here. Whoever is entrusted with the task of preparing the gumbo at Bishop’s Post should feel free to forward the recipe to this writer, as the gumbo broth may have been the pinnacle of the meal. I could have spent a half hour alone with a loaf of crusty bread and a deep bowl of the stuff. The menu at Bishop’s Post is faithful in its veneration of classic comfort fare, but the kitchen goes a step further by elevating beloved American dishes beyond their humble origins. Success in this was plainly evident when the main courses arrived. Meatloaf with caramelized onion gravy reminded us of a favorite aunt’s cherished Salisbury steak, and no accompaniments other than the buttery mound of mashed Yukon potatoes and tender sautéed vegetables would have been appropriate. Now, if you’ve never thought of macaroni and cheese as a main course, you would do well to try one of two luxuriously adorned interpretations at Bishop’s Post. Pan roasted beef tenderloin and mushrooms was an enticing option, but I went for the version bearing a julienne of grilled chicken breast,

sautéed onions and baby spinach with diced fresh tomato and jalapeño. The jalapeño wasn’t forward in the mix at all, lending just the right amount of bright, green heat as counterpoint to the rich, creamy Cheddar béchamel sauce of the macaroni. The portion was easily two meals’ worth and as with all the best comfort food, the part I couldn’t finish tasted even better the next day. Though we had no room for dessert, we did eye the tempting dessert tray longingly. Summer strawberry shortcake took center stage in a selection of tortes heavy with fresh fruit. Next time, we vowed. Our experience at Bishop's Post was as delightful as the food was delicious. The atmosphere was so captivating and the cuisine so comforting, we forgot all about our prior perilous drive; it was, indeed, a perfect place for us to take shelter from the storm. Bishop’s Post offers quite a large selection of timeless favorites for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch, with a special menu for Sunday dinner and a formidable rotation of nightly dinner specials. Whether you stop in for a glass of wine, a luxurious repast of updated comfort food, or you’re looking to host a meeting or wedding with a sumptuous feast, there’s something to satisfy everyone.

s the heat of August gives way to more unexpected heat in September, a ritual takes place in communities across the country. School supplies are purchased, new clothing is selected and crayons are broken in. It’s that time of year when most children begrudgingly head back to begin a new school year. However, it wasn’t that long ago that most children looked forward to returning to school. Those seemingly endless summers that children now enjoy are a direct result of schools closing their doors to allow children to help on farms during the labor-intensive months of summer and then harvest. In the earliest days of Chesterfield, parents usually taught their children in the home; as the population grew, school districts were formed giving each town its own school. Most of the one-room schools in the area were built around the turn of the century, out of use by the 1950s (as the larger school districts such as Parkway and Rockwood emerged) and now sadly demolished. These included: Chesterfield School located on Wild Horse Creek Road, the Orrville

18

School located near Eatherton Road, Bonhomme School located at 18455 Olive Street Road and Bellefontaine School located at 14950 Conway Rd. My family attended the Lake School located on Olive Boulevard near the current entrance to the Green Trails subdivision. Originally, this school was a small, wood-plank building. Historians date its construction to 1897 and it is listed as “School No. 1” on 1909 maps. As more families moved to the area, the 25x60-square-foot room was bursting at the seams—one year, 62 students were enrolled and using that tiny space. So in 1925, E. W. Zierenberg purchased the frame structure and moved it across the street behind his mercantile for storage and a new, more modern brick building was constructed. In 1967, the Creve Coeur-Chesterfield Historical Society moved the original school to Lake School Park, where is still stands today. Several different preschools used the brick structure until widening of Olive Blvd in the late 1990s necessitated its demolition.

Lake School 1932

The harsh realities of the times meant segregated schools. The schools pictured above were for white children only. While historical and photographic information about the schools for black children is sparse, one such school existed in the Lake School district. Around the turn of the century, local farmer Frank Storch donated an acre of land on River Valley Road (or Lower Bottom Road as it was known) near the St. Louis County Water Co. to be used for an “African School.” Most of the students came from the Brooks and James families, who were descendants of slaves living in Missouri prior to and during the Civil War. There is still a small grove of trees were the school once stood. My dad’s family farm was across River Valley Road from the black school and he remembers when he was too young to officially attend school, he would play with the children at the black school during their recesses. He also remembers asking the teacher if he could attend class there and the teacher told him only if he was quiet. Perhaps that makes Dad the first integrated student in St. Louis County! What was it like to attend one of these small schools? Take a look at the photo of the children in the classroom, taken in 1932 at the “new” Lake School. There are four grades in the photograph, with the First Grade class on the far left row, back to front, Second Grade in the row second from the left and so on. Imagine how difficult it must have been to teach four grades--ALL at once. The Seventh Grade and Eighth Grade were taught on alternate years—presumably using alternating material rather than having students sit out a year. When my great-grandmother, Lena Hoefer (Lena Reising at the time), graduated from Eighth Grade, there was no high school in the area, so her teacher gave her the Ninth Grade textbooks so she could continue studying on her own.

Take a look at a report card from the era; you can see that some of the subjects taught are what you would expect: arithmetic, spelling, reading and geography. Others are perhaps a bit more surprising for a small, country school of the era, including: music, drawing and physiology. Others, like agriculture, have all but disappeared from the modern curricula. Often, we think of school in the early days as being rather strict, with very standard subjects being taught. While this is partly true, these were still children and sometimes behaved as such. I have an old textbook that belonged to my great-grandmother, Elements of Arithmetic. It is from 1904 and on the first page she has written her name and the date. It always strikes me as fascinating that the juvenile, girly penmanship of a 9-year-old Lena is evident on the page and belongs to a woman I remember never being younger than 80 years old. Also on the front page are “doodles” typical of a bored schoolgirl—a heart and curlicues surrounding the words “Kiss me Quick,” as well as the following: “If my name you do not see, look on page 203.” When one turns to page 203, you are greeted with, “You are a fool for looking.” Some things never change. Comedian Jim Gaffigan recently said, “Who doesn’t deserve a three-month break after a rigorous year of kindergarten?” So the next time your child complains about the summer being over, remind them that the early children of Chesterfield looked forward to going back to school, as it meant the heavy labor of the harvest was finished. You can find more information about visiting the Old Lake School at AboutStLouis.com. Faust Park also has an authentic old school house you and your family can tour to get a feel for what the one room school houses were like—back in the day.

beautiful custom front door proves the adage of “a first impression can make all the difference,” according to Mike Rachocki, owner of the Scobis Company, which has been in business since 2001. Replacing your old front door or doors can do wonders for the curb appeal and value of your home, according to Rachocki, whose company is located at 137 Chesterfield Industrial Blvd. “A front door is the first thing any visitor will see on your house,” he says. Rachocki says that, according to the Home Remodelers Association, the value of the property is improved with new custom doors, often by more than the cost of your investment. “Custom entryways can dramatically enhance the value of the property as well as create a lasting impression,” he says. “A beautifully designed doorway will transform the appearance of any building.” Custom doors can also differentiate your home from other homes with typical builder grade, subdivision doors. Most people are unaware of the custom door options available to them. “People tend to stick with the basic offerings of products and are surprised what is opened up to them once they start a custom process,” Rachocki says. Wood doors incorporating decorative wrought iron are currently a popular trend. “And coupling that with decorative door hardware really enhances the look. The overall effect is sophisticated and substantial,” Rachocki explains. Another style that’s trending is the simple and sleek look of modern design. “It’s not quite contemporary, which is stark looking, but modern blends the traditional and contemporary styles and gives a little bit more warmth,” he says. In regard to custom door materials, the tried and true ones continue. “Mahogany is still the most popular material for a custom door; it weathers well and finishes very nicely,” Rachocki says. “And wrought iron decorative grilles are trending in this area as well.” Attention to detail is vital, and Rachocki's crafts people select only the best materials with the most appealing grain to fabricate doors, which are kiln dried to the proper moisture content to ensure longevity, durability and resilience. Whether a buyer wants to recreate a historical style or show off a cutting edge design, the custom door creation/installation process will make a home stand out from all of the rows of typical subdivision doors. “People today are more willing to personalize things and look at various options, so buyers can get to have exactly what they want without compromising on style,” Rachocki says.

Help For

Headaches and Strokes: Act F.A.S.T. Because strokes can present themselves as a sudden and severe headache without an apparent cause, when someone without a history of migraine headaches experiences a sudden and unusually intense headache, seek immediate treatment. An easy way to remember the proper course of action should this happen is to remember to act F.A.S.T. and call 911:

Headaches

SOMETIMES, A HEADACHE IS NOT "JUST A HEADACHE"

FACE: Ask the person to smile. Does the person’s face look uneven? ARMS: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? SPEECH: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Does the person’s speech sound slurred or strange? TIME: If the person shows any of these symptoms, call for help FAST!

ARTICLE KIRK KLEINFELD, M.D. | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

eadaches are a fairly common disorder of the nervous system. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 47 percent of adults experienced a headache at least once within the last year. Sometimes, getting through the day is a challenge; daily rigors of work, family and recreation may seem like enough to cause a splitting headache -- genetics can play a big role in headaches, too. Women are especially susceptible to headaches. A recent study found that 26 percent of women between the ages of 18 and 44 can expect to experience a migraine or severe headache during any three-month period. Some estimates have found that women suffer three times as many headaches as men. For many women, headaches are a constant concern and should be monitored closely and treated to help them lead normal lives. The fact that women experience headaches at an alarming rate is not entirely surprising. Women’s genetics play a large role in headaches; hormones contribute to headaches as can a woman’s menstrual cycle and brain chemistry. Research analyzed through the Women’s Health Study found that depression is a threatening byproduct of migraine headaches in women. The study analyzed over 36,000 women who had no reported depression when the study started. When the study ended, it found women who reported having migraines have a 40 percent greater chance of developing depression versus women who do not have a history of headaches. Untreated depression can: lead to drug or alcohol addiction, cause strains on relationships, negatively affect mood and thoughts, lead to sleep and eating disorders and impact work habits. A type of headache more common in men than women is referred to as a “cluster headache” (two to four times as many men have

22

Chesterfield Lifestyle | September 2015

cluster headaches as women). A cluster headache is described as a series of headaches that affects an individual over an extended period or cluster of time anywhere from weeks to months. Cluster headaches occur when a nerve at the base of the brain is activated causing the eye to experience pain, tearing and redness. Potential causes for cluster headaches include seasonal changes (mainly spring and fall), tobacco use and alcohol consumption. Treatment options for those experiencing cluster headaches include medications and, in some cases, surgery. Some symptoms indicate a headache may be more than “just a headache.” Strokes can oftentimes present themselves as a sudden and severe headache without an apparent cause. Intense headaches, like migraines, usually develop over an extended period of time; strokes present suddenly. When someone without a history of migraine headaches experiences a sudden and unusually intense headache, seek immediate treatment -- "Time is Brain." (See sidebar) Sudden onset of severe headaches, daily headaches associated with the body’s position or headaches that change in their characteristics are all red flags; seek immediate medical care. Headaches associated with fever and neck rigidity require immediate evaluation as they could indicate meningitis. Consult with your physician or see a specialist if headaches are negatively affecting your health or lifestyle. Dr. Kirk Kleinfeld is a neurologist at The Brain and Spine Center at St. Luke’s Hospital. To learn more about headaches or strokes and possible treatment options, visit StLukes-StL.com.

Parting Thoughts

Leave No Stone

UNTURNED GOING "GREEN" AT HOME NEVER LOOKED SO BEAUTIFUL WORDS LIBBY MULLEN

W

ould you rather have your children and grandchildren climbing mountains or climbing landfill piles?” Patrick Gilmore, owner of Recycled Granite poses this question to drive home the importance of diverting waste by recycling materials. Patrick’s company creates unique and gorgeous: fireplaces, floors, walkways, back splashes, walls, islands, shower surround—and just about any other application you can dream of—using recycled granite pieces. A few years back, during Patrick’s commute to work, he drove by some large granite slabs that were laid out at the curb. When he was coming back the other way he noticed the slabs had been tipped over and shattered in the street. The next time he drove by all of the broken granite pieces were gone. Patrick visited the business to find out what happened to the granite and was told that they were thrown away in the dumpsters in the back. After additional research, Patrick learned that there are several fabricating companies in the area that deal with large granite slabs and their “waste” was also just thrown away. “There are around 52 fabricating companies in and around the St. Louis area; the average company has about 5 tons of waste per week—granite slabs that are fractured or have small imperfections are not usable for their purposes—that is potentially over 250 tons of granite, just in our area, that would be going to the landfills every week,” Gilmore explains. “

Using these beautiful granite pieces, Patrick is able to create amazing one-of-a-kind projects for homeowners while doing something important for the environment by keeping usable materials from going to landfills. Patrick grew up on a farm in Missouri, and was always taught the importance of not wasting things. That practice was put into use daily on the farm. He also has a tremendous respect for the historical Native American way of life, finding a use for everything and taking care of the earth by respecting the environment. He infuses these philosophies and practices into his business. “I have two main goals with my company—to divert waste and to create jobs,” Gilmore says. Homeowners who choose Recycled Granite to install projects in their homes can feel good about the process being “green.” Patrick Gilmore is on a mission to “leave no stone unturned” and in the process he is beautifying homes while recycling materials. Patrick’s creations are truly works of art and become conversations pieces in the Chesterfield area homes where he has created them. Gilmore said, “Going green has never looked so beautiful.” Find out more about Recycled Granite and how Patrick can transform your home into a “green” showplace.
