Enjoy the Moments

publisher Steven Schowengerdt sales director Eric Williams | EWilliams@LifestylePubs.com

I

am the type of person who likes to stop and smell the roses. The fast-forward lifestyle is not a part of my being. Perhaps that is why my husband and I make such an awesome pair. Our opposite personalities create a perfect balance in both of our lives. It’s always important to me, though, to enjoy, take pride in and explore whichever city I live in. I have found that “enjoying the moment” can often lead to discovering a new understanding of myself, and a chance to learn new and amazing things. This month’s issue is all about “Living in Chandler.” Chandler is a place where families love to be active. The Chandler/Gilbert YMCA is a place where your family can go to stay active, be social with your neighbors and have fun. Their top of the line facilities will keep you wanting to go back time and time again. Did you know that our night sky offers one of the most amazing stargazing experiences? Take a “Field Trip” to some of Arizona’s observatories or bring your telescope up one of our local mountains to discover the galaxies in a whole new way. No matter how you choose to gaze, one thing is for sure, you will discover something our area offers that is out of this world. The Valley Permaculture Alliance shines a light into the world of sustainable living in our urban environment. Enjoy our enlightening article about this non-profit organization dedicated to helping people discover the importance of sustainable living through yarn making, container gardening, building your own chicken coop and more. Local healthy eating guru Suzette Zara has a scrumptious recipe for you in this issue. Roll up your veggies this spring in yummy spring rolls. After seeing how easy these are to make, you will be excited to serve these to your next houseguests. Don’t forget moms this month, too. As Mother’s Day approaches, be brainstorming about ways to make her feel extra special. You can find a unique gift idea in our “Style Wise” article. As you read about all of the things that make “Living in Chandler” unique and exciting, I hope it inspires you to explore more about this amazing city. As sure as the stars that shine over our heads each night, there is always something more to learn about the places we live in. Find the opportunities and grab a hold of what is just waiting to be discovered around the corner. There’s no place like home, neighbors.

GOLD BAR ESPRESSO

AN EVENING WITH JESSE COOK Born in Paris to a photographer and filmmaker, Jesse Cook spent his first few years in France and Barcelona. Early on he found a special interest in playing the guitar, something that would later turn into a fascination. After his parents divorced, his mother moved him to Canada. This is when guitar lessons and hours of study began, and his visits to his father in the French city of Arles led to a discovery of the Camargue sound. This sound can be heard today in Jesse’s style of music, “nuevo flamenco,” which incorporates flamenco rumba, jazz and other forms of world music. His talents have led to him winning his 1998 silver medal in Acoustic Guitar magazine’s prestigious Players’ Choice Awards. Jesse Cook takes the stage on May 9 at the Chandler Center located at 250 N Arizona Ave. For more details, visit ChandlerCenter.org.

THE FULL MONTY A story of friendship and renewed self-esteem, this tale begins when a group of laidoff steel workers realize the possibilities of the male form. This leads to the men starting their own strip tease act. However, unlike other male revues, such as Chippendales, this group sets themselves apart by going “the full monty.” A challenge at first, the men find the confidence to disrobe and bare all in order to make some quick cash. This comedy is sure to delight, as well as inspire. The Full Monty is showing from Friday, May 30 Sunday, June 15 at the Mesa Arts Center. To learn more, visit MesaArtsCenter.com.

KEB’ MO’ From guitar to steel drums to upright bass, Keb’ Mo’ has mastered more instruments than the average musician. Being influenced early on by blues and gospel, he spent most of the 1970s and 80s playing in a number of blues and backup bands. In 1994, he released his first album, and by 1997 he had a Grammy Award under his wing. Two Grammy Awards later, Keb’ earned his reputation as a master of American roots music. His songs have been recorded by Buddy Guy, B.B. King, the Dixie Chicks, Robert Palmer, and Joe Cocker. And he has collaborated with a number of other artists, including Jackson Brown, Amy Grant, and Cassandra Wilson. He also performed the theme song for the hit sitcom, “Mike and Molly.” His latest release, “BLUESAmericana” marks the 20th anniversary of his debut album. Eyes On Site KEEPING YOUR EYES ON THE BEST IN LOCAL EYE CARE ARTICLE RACHEL HAWKINSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

D

o you believe in love at first sight? Even if you don’t, you don’t want to risk missing out on something good in life by not having your eyesight in tip-top shape. And unlike hair that grows back or a spray tan that fades away, our eyes are too valuable to trust to just anyone. Enter Eyes On Site. Fueled by a belief that your vision is a paramount component to a high quality of life, Jeffrey Wine, O.D., and his staff provide the best in vision care to patients of all ages, both in their Chandler office and through their unique mobile eye care services – both of which utilize state of the art diagnostic and monitoring equipment. Wine has been practicing optometry since 2006, with a degree in optometry from Ohio State University and a residency in ocular disease at HuHuKam Memorial Hospital in Sacaton, Ariz. (where he also received a fellowship from the American Academy of Optometry). Since the Eyes On Site practice’s inception in 2010, Wine has focused on mobile eye care services. He and two additional technicians currently visit more than 100 elderly care facilities, group homes, and rehabilitation facilities to help more than 3,000 patients annually preserve their eyesight and treat a variety of eye

12 Chandler Lifestyle | May 2014

diseases that they may otherwise not be able to provide attention to in a traditional office setting. Until last summer, the mobile services were 100 percent of Eyes On Site’s practice. The newer Eyes On Site office in Chandler offers a full range of vision services to patients including complete eye exams, contact lenses, glasses, glaucoma testing, and pre- and post-LASIK operative care. The facility has a wide selection of frames from independent eyewear companies like Salt, KBL, and Zoobug Kids on site, along with private exam rooms and a comfortable, spacious waiting room to relax in. A typical eye exam begins with one of Wine’s ocular experts performing some basic vision tests, including the old favorite eye chart. After performing a couple routine exams, you are moved to another exam room where Wine reviews your patient history, discusses any concerns you may have, and helps put you at ease with his obvious passion optometry combined with his easy-going demeanor. But what if you’re not noticing any issues with your vision? Wine suggests that just like any other part of your body, your eyes need routine checkups to make sure you stay on top of any irregularities.

“A lot of preventable eye issues don’t really have noticeable symptoms to begin with,” he explains. Using glaucoma as an example, where peripheral vision may begin to substantially deteriorate before the patient ever even notices, he states that may insurance plans offer low copays on annual eye exams. To Wine, it’s simple: “A few prevention dollars now can save you a lot of treatment dollars down the road.” Whether it be Arizona’s dry and dusty air irritating our eyes, or hours of staring at computer monitors and squinting to read Facebook on our mobile devices, our eyes are constantly vulnerable to the elements and strain that can lead us to imperfect vision. And since younger patients are often just as vulnerable with less ability to communicate what’s wrong, Wine suggests making sure that potential vision issues are addressed with a quick checkup to ensure that they are seeing clearly.

“They come in seeing blurry, can’t see a thing, having issues in school,” he explains of younger patients. “We get them glasses and bam – they’re right back on track!” What sets Eyes On Site apart from the others is simply in the quality of every aspect of his work – from his focus on high quality care over high patient volume, to his partnering with independent frame lines made from high quality materials that are proven to last. Even their commitment to the Chandler community through their Eye to Eye Campaign that provides patients that are unable to afford glasses with a new pair at no cost. The Eye to Eye Campaign also supports free eye exams and glasses to people in remote areas of Malawi, Africa, when Wine travels there. Eyes On Site has office hours throughout the week and often on weekends to accommodate their growing client base. They accept many major insurance plans, and take pride in offering the best in patient care from the phone call to schedule your appointment. Valley Permaculture Alliance URBAN LIVING WITH A GREEN THUMB ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

L

iving in the city or a desert landscape doesn’t mean one must live in the absence of nature. It’s surprising what one can do with a little creativity in their backyard or apartment patio. Some dirt, seeds, sunshine and water can do so much more than grow a plant, it can build family relationships and glue a community together. Digging in a garden can wash away a hectic city day, bring someone to their roots and fill their family’s dinner plates. This is the essence of the Valley Permaculture Alliance (VPA). According to the VPA, the first known use of the term “permaculture” was in 1974 at the University of Tasmania. The term is a combination of “permanent” and “agriculture” and addresses sustainability of human and natural ecosystems, each dependent on one another. “It’s more than just growing vegetables, it’s about growing this mind-shift,” says Jennifer Bonnett, executive director of VPA. “If someone drops a garden into the community that’s good, but if people build the garden, they are also building relationships too.” The VPA is a nonprofit organization that provides education across the Valley. 14 Chandler Lifestyle | May 2014

Their mission is to inspire sustainable living in the urban desert southwest. Their programs include tours of local sustainable homes, classes and hands-on training. They also have a large online forum to answer any gardening and sustainable living questions one might dream up. “We try to use existing community resources to offer our classes and we have partnerships with people who have grounds and gardens; we have a variety of teachers we contract for the different topic areas,” says Bonnett. The group hosts all sorts of interesting classes such as yarn making, wine making, container gardening for urban living, cre-

ate a backyard chicken coop or raise backyard domestic quail. They also have an informative newsletter that offers all sorts great stories and fun tips, like how to use old sneakers as planters and how to create a living sunflower fort for kids. The VPA is also well known for their collaboration with APS and SRP to provide free desert shade trees to residents to help with energy reduction. People can receive one to three trees depending on the age of their home. The desert trees offered are three to five gallon youngsters that are low water usage and fast growing. There is a Scottsdale event at SkySong in May, and one at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in July. For more information, visit their website at VPAAZ.org. “It’s so much fun to give someone a free tree,” says Bonnett. “We are always looking for volunteers.” Mary Bossler, a Chandler resident and VPA volunteer, began her involvement as a class participant, but quickly wanted more. “When you find something you are passionate about it makes volunteering fun and easy,” says Bossler. “People are learning things that their great grandmothers did, like making jam and pickles, growing their own food and storing it. It’s encouraging that people are learning to do this again.” Bossler is a master gardener and has volunteered for various organizations for the past 20 years. Currently she edits the newsletter and adds tidbits like recipes or

kid projects, like how to make a worm tower in your garden for compost or create a place for butterflies to drink. “If you can only spare an hour a week you can be part of the fun; it grows on you,” says Bossler. “The VPA is a community of people who can teach you how to do it, so you’re not on your own.” Want your own chicken coop? Hop on board for Tour de Coop in November, a self-guided tour of backyard chicken coops. Get valuable information from homeowners who’ve already learned through trial and error and found solutions to problems such as summer heat. Although chickens are not permitted in Chandler, if you are a Scottsdale or Phoenix resident you may be in luck. But check with your homeowners association and do your research before breaking out the tools. “We have so much going on and we are really trying to reach out and become as much a part of the community as we can,” says Bonnett. One of the VPA’s newest projects is their seed library. People can check out seed packets, much like a book, from various libraries. Borrowers are asked to donate seeds back to the library as their garden comes to bloom. If you are a new gardener, don’t worry, there is information on how to do this too! They have a permanent library in their office and a satellite location at the Glendale Public Library. They are currently seeking more locations in which to share their seeds. “Our seed library is all volunteer driven and the seeds provided are not genetically modified, they are really great seeds,” says Bonnett. “We are looking for volunteers all ages. Little hands work great to stuff seed packets.” The VPA strives to share information with people, so they can pick and choose which projects best fit their lifestyle. They build community, which is just as important as growing food and eating your vegetables. They are teaching people to create the environment they want to live in, where ever that may be. To submit your favorite nonprofit organization, or a special person involved in the community, for our Giving Back section, send an email to MichelleMGuerrero@live.com.

Red Mountain Resort – St. George, Utah ADVENTURE-BASED VACATIONS FOR PEAK ENJOYMENT OF ALL KINDS

ARTICLE RACHEL HAWKINSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

F

or many of us, our fondest memories are of summer vacations. The feeling of freedom we felt as we exited those school doors to three solid months of sleeping late and spending our days with friends conquering playgrounds was unmatched by anything. Giving up on summer vacations is certainly the worst part of becoming an adult, right?

Red Mountain Resort in St. George, Utah, doesn’t believe that being a grown-up means you have to give up on your sense of adventure. In fact, they give you everything you need to tap into it all over again. Only approximately 430 miles from Chandler, Red Mountain Resort offers what it calls “Adventure Vacations,” with packages 16 Chandler Lifestyle | May 2014

focusing on spa and wellness, weight loss, a girls’ getaway, detox, restoration and more. Guests most often range in age from 30-60 years old, and consist of both men and women, solo travelers and groups of family or friends. Activity enthusiasts find plenty to do, and those who prefer an afternoon nap on the hammock to an afternoon hike up the hill will feel at home, too. With such a variety of guests, Red Mountain Resort provides options to suit every desire and has developed a flair for creating a unique getaway. The all-new Giddy-Up Yoga Retreat, for example, is a four-day, three-night outing that combines an all-level yoga practice with equine therapy and riding led by experts in both fields that work together to provide an ultimate transformation. General Manager Tracey Welsh describes it as a retreat that “combines the beauty of the horse and the outdoors with a physical and spiritual practice.” Other notable packages include the Body in Balance package, offering the ultimate in health and wellness to detoxify your body and help renew you from the inside out. For those that are just looking to grab their girls and getaway for a weekend, the Girlfriends Fun and Fabulous includes massage and facial treatments at the on-site Sagestone Spa. And that’s just to name a few of their options. The core of the Red Mountain Resort’s vacations, though, is the foundation of three healthy meals, unlimited fitness classes, personal enrichment activities and campus full of bikes, walking trails, strength and cardio studios, and daily guided hikes. Though the nutritionally sound and adventure-inspired meal options serve as the

fuel for the week’s activities, Welsh says those daily guided hiking are undoubtedly what sets Red Mountain Spa apart from the rest. “Guests are instantly integrated into the experience,” Welsh suggests of the level-based hikes that occur each morning. “They meet other people, enjoy time de-stressing in nature, and get to breathe in the wide open spaces.” Beginners who are unsure they want to tackle the terrain are offered a Pound Puppy walk with a pup from the local Ivins No Kill Animal Shelter & Adoption Center, while more advanced hiking enthusiasts can participate in additional full and half-day hiking adventures nearby at an additional cost. And those with a higher penchant for adventure are able to kick things up a notch by taking advantage of nearby Zion National Park and Snow Canyon State Park through activities such as canyoneering, horseback riding, kayaking, rock climbing and jeep tours (each at a fee in addition to the nightly resort cost). More interested in being someone who takes things lying down? Upon returning from the days’ activities, guests are able to swing by the Sagestone Spa & Salon for restful and restorative treatments that feature desert-based ingredients. Body treat-

ments, massages, hand and foot care – some of which can even be performed in the privacy of your own villa. And for those that don’t want to overexert themselves, they can hide out in the deluxe room accommodations or in one of the villas that are engulfed in a view of the surrounding red rocks. No getaway is complete without a little evening entertainment, and St. George and its surrounding areas don’t disappoint. Gamblers who didn’t get their fix when they drove in from Las Vegas can stop by Mequite, Nevada, for some gaming, and art enthusiasts can enjoy local galleries and performances in nearby Kayenta Art Village only eight miles away. Ssummer months include musical theatre performances and concerts from Tuacahn Performing Arts Theatre. Though with all that Red Mountain Resort has to offer, it’s uncertain you’ll have the energy or desire to even leave the grounds. Before you relinquish yourself to another summer full of triple-digit weather, consider grabbing your hiking shoes and your sense of adventure and treat yourself to the joys of summer vacation, grown-up style. Your mind and body will both thank you. For more information on Red Mountain Resort please visit their website at RedMountainResort.com.

A Stargazer’s Dream ARIZONA NIGHT SKIES ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD ARTICLE KORY KILMER | PHOTOGRAPHY LOWELL OBSERVATORY

W

hen somebody claims that there is something special about the desert sky, it turns out that it may not just be his or her imagination. For centuries, astronomers and amateur stargazers have been flocking to the Southwest to get an amazingly clear glimpse of the heavens. The options are almost limitless for anyone already with a telescope in hand. Locations such as McDowell Mountain Regional Park and the Dreamy Draw Area of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve offer a perfect opportunity to make some late-night observations without ever leaving the comfort of the metro area. Amateur astronomers will undoubtedly be thankful if they elect to take even just a short drive outside of Phoenix. Leaving the light pollution behind will unveil a stargazing opportunity not found in too many other places on Earth. Higher elevation areas just outside town up around the Rim Country position stargazers closer to the skies, and the dry desert air is ideal as the lack of humidity increases visibility. The town of Payson takes its role as a stargazing destination more seriously than most. Residents claim that they reside underneath one of only three pure air ozone belts found in the world. The town has also embraced an array of “dark-sky” ordinances that would help to protect the view from the ground for generations to come. 18 Chandler Lifestyle | May 2014

For those looking for a more high-powered experience gazing the skies, it should be no surprise that Arizona is home to two of the most famous observatories in the world. Perched high atop the Quinlan Mountains in the Sonoran Desert on the Tohono O’odham Nation and about an hour southwest of Tucson is the Kitt Peak National Observatory. Administered by the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOTO), Kitt Peak is home to what is considered to be the most diverse grouping of astrological equipment found anywhere in the world, including 24 optical and two radio telescopes. Among the equipment at Kitt Peak is the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope, which is the largest of its kind found in the world. The research performed at Kitt Peak has also been at the forefront of locating near-Earth asteroids and calculating their likelihood of impact. Up north in Flagstaff is the legendary Lowell Observatory, which was founded in 1894 and ranks among one of the oldest still operating in the United States. Having been named one of “The World’s 100 Most Important Places” by TIME magazine in 2011, Lowell still is home to numerous telescopes, including its original Alvan Clark telescope (which is unfortunately undergoing renovations that will keep it out of commission until 2015), and was instrumental in the discovery of Pluto in 1930 among other discoveries. Lowell has teamed up with the Discovery Communications to build the Discovery Channel Telescope. After seeing its first light in April of 2012, the DTC is the fifth-largest optical telescope in the continental United States and promises to help Lowell continue to dig deeper into the secrets of outer space. Both the Kitt Peak National as well as the Lowell Observatories offers a wide variety of day and night programs throughout the year that will appeal to astronomers of every level of both skill and interest. Both observatories recommend booking early as many programs have a tendency to book up fast, especially those that occur around notable celestial events. From Kitt Peak down south to Lowell up north and every store bought or do-it-yourself telescope in between, Arizona’s vibrant night skies beg to be viewed. And they will always offer one promise: anyone that dares to look up is bound to see something that is out of this world.

YMCA: a place for families to grow

Encouraging youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. ARTICLE MEGHANN FINN SEPULVEDA

I

pull in to the parking lot and smile. At 9 a.m. on a Monday morning, there are other moms like me, who are unloading kids, and diaper bags so they can get inside and enjoy some time alone to exercise their body and mind. There is no doubt living in Chandler begs for my family to stay active and be social, and at the Chandler/Gilbert Family YMCA, you’ll be greeted by friendly faces and a warm welcome by staff and volunteers. Your experience won’t leave you wishing you stayed home and skipped that workout. In fact, you may leave feeling inspired to make not only personal improvements to better yourself, but also your community.

FITNESS CENTER, AEROBICS

The YMCA boasts a large selection of cardiovascular, strength-training and circuit equipment. An aerobics studio offers a variety of classes ranging from low intensity for stretching and breathing practices such as yoga, to high intensity Zumba. I didn’t know what to expect at my first Zumba class so I stayed in the back and tried to be unnoticed. Almost immediately, the instructor greeted me and shared some useful tips: “Keep up as best as you can, and don’t worry about what your arms are doing.” During the hour-long class, I let go of inhibitions, increased my heart rate and had fun. Group exercise classes are designed to accommodate every level from beginners to advanced. A cycling studio for spin and a gymnasium for basketball or volleyball are also available to members. An outdoor pool is utilized for aerobic classes, freestyle swimming, and lessons, and is a perfect option for people with joint or muscle pain. The pool is always staffed by a certified lifeguard. Individual and group personal training sessions are also offered. CHILDCARE

If you think your children are preventing you from visiting the YMCA, think again. Members benefit from up to two hours of free childcare every day. 20 Chandler Lifestyle | May 2014

The Amazing Kids Center is not your typical childcare. You’ll be surprised at what your kids will accomplish in a brief amount of time. From cute and creative art projects to music, story time, and even outdoor play, your little ones may not want to leave. Staffed by loving, caring and dedicated childcare providers, the Center can accommodate children from 6 months up to 12 years. A video monitoring system also allows mom and dad to keep an eye on their little ones during workouts. The YMCA also has a fully state-licensed preschool on campus, which can accommodate before and after care, and summer camp needs. The K12 at the Y is a supervised, online-learning education alternative program outside a traditional school setting, and is accredited by Arizona Virtual Academy. SPORTS AND SWIMMING

The YMCA has built a reputation for developing sports skills from an early age. From preschool through high school, sports programs include baseball, flag football, golf, volleyball, soccer and basketball. Additional activities include martial arts, gymnastics and cheerleading. Activities also take place through the aquatics program.

My husband and I enjoy taking our kids to the pool regularly on hot summer days. It features a shallow area for little ones to splash and play, and a designated lap area for those who want to perfect strokes. I feel more confident taking our kids swimming knowing a lifeguard is on duty. They even supply life vests and pool toys. Swim lessons for children and adults of all ages and group, semi-private and private classes are available. Lifeguard and CPR training are also offered. WELLNESS, PREVENTION CLASSES

A variety of wellness and prevention classes and workshops are offered throughout the year and include nutrition counseling, diabetes control and weight management. Workforce development programs increase access to educational and vocational opportunities for teens and young adults. Through the military outreach initiative, eligible military families and active duty personnel are given access to youth development, family strengthening, and health and well-being programs through membership fees which are underwritten by the Department of Defense. As a military family, we are truly grateful for this program, which allows us to set positive examples for our children by demonstrating the importance of taking care of our bodies and living a healthy lifestyle.

VOLUNTEERISM

If you are looking for a way to give back to the community, consider becoming a volunteer at the YMCA. There are plenty of opportunities to make a difference. Volunteers can serve as an active member of the Board of Directors or on one of the many committees, or raise funds to make sure the YMCA is accessible to everyone. Coach a sport or teach a class. Motivate youth to demonstrate positive behaviors and pursue higher education. Encourage others to make healthier choices. For more than 150 years, the YMCA has been dedicated to strengthening communities and bringing positive change, serving more than 45 million people in 120 countries to build a better and healthier future. At 10 a.m. I finish on the treadmill and head over to the Amazing Kids Center to pick up my children. Someone always starts to cry. They don’t want to leave – they’ve been outside playing basketball and climbing on the playground. They’ve made new friends. I’ll have to collect them, kicking and screaming, and hurry back to the car to pile them all in and plan out the rest of our day. But I can let out a deep breath knowing I’ve not only exercised my body, but I’ve successfully cleared my mind and feel good. Learn more at ValleyYMCA.org/ChandlerGilbert.

The Living Room LIVE, LAUGH AND LOUNGE ARTICLE KATHLEEN BLAIR | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

he Living Room Wine Café and Lounge made its debut in Chandler in December of 2009. The vision of having a restaurant with a lounging atmosphere where guests can relax and stay awhile was Tom Kaufman’s idea after successfully opening numerous restaurants. He took his love for wine and the idea of having a home like environment and created an inviting atmosphere. With wine as the core and a good selection of skinny specialty drinks and ale and a menu that offers items that can be shared, it has became “the place” to be. Kaufman is no stranger to the restaurant industry. This ASU graduate started out as a busboy, then a bellhop learning key factors he later incorporated in his restaurants. Along the way he developed a passion for wine and became a sommelier in Napa Valley where his interest in wine continued to grow. In 1993, he returned to Arizona with his wife, Chef Chyrsa Robertson, and they opened Rancho Pinot. After a successful run, he and Robertson parted. He decided to open an affordable place where families could dine that would be a step up from the fast food industry. So in 2009 Humble Pie opened at the Hilton Village in Scottsdale. Gaining much popularity for its gourmet pizzas and comfortable ambiance, Humble Pie recently opened its eighth location in Sky Harbor’s terminal four. By now, Kaufman had gained insight on what people like and how to bring a winning team together. “I wanted to create an atmosphere where women could feel comfortable meeting their girlfriends or coming in alone,” Kaufman ex-

plains. “A place where it’s not about turning tables, it’s about chill’n.” When I first entered, it was nice seeing a more relaxed atmosphere then having a series of table and chairs. With its cozy appearance of couches and chairs scattered among small tables and a wrap around bar makes it so inviting you won’t want to leave. There are five garage doors that open up to patios that look more like a person’s backyard than a restaurant. Ryan Watson, partner and general manager, greeted me. He has been with the Humble restaurant family for nine years starting at the original Humble Pie and then transferring over for the opening of this Chandler wine bar. “We love to make people feel at home; thus the name The Living Room,” explains Watson. SIMPLE FOOD WITH BIG FLAVOR

I began my evening with one of my favorite things to graze on – cheese fondue made with melted brie and accompanied with green apple slices, cauliflower, broccoli, bread and soft pretzel. The cheese was so yummy; it was a nice change from the traditional Swiss or cheddar version.

Next I sampled the prime rib sliders. The Living Room is known for its prime rib, and these sliders are made with gorgonzola crumbles, creamy horseradish and a tasty au jus for dipping. It was tender and delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed sampling the Caprese, served with burrata mozzarella, pesto, cherry tomatoes, balsamic reduction and ciabatta bread. It was fun to make my own bruschetta taking the tasty bread and adding some of the cheese, then drizzling a little of the pesto and topping it off with the sliced cherry tomatoes. It’s a winner. I can see why The Living Room is a popular spot in the neighborhood for all ages. The ambiance is comfortable and the food lends itself to grazing as you sample the share platters. A few are the red pepper hummus, spinach and artichoke dip; a large Bavarian pretzel with dipping sauces, cheeseburger sliders and seven choices of crispy flatbread pizza. There are also eight bruschetta choices which include tomato mozzarella with roasted peppers, goat cheese and garlic; one with apples, brie, fig jam, honey and agave nectar; and another that has prosciutto, figs, mascarpone and pepper jam just to name a few. Since you can order two or four to sample, I suggest that you have your own bruschetta tasting and sample four different ones. Another grazing choice is the Cheese Board where you can select three of the artisan cheeses offered and are served with roasted almonds, dried apricots and ciabatta bread. The menu also includes seven interesting salads, three inviting soups, an array of unique sandwiches and a few tempting desserts. A great way to finish your evening, especially if you are a chocolate lover, is enjoying the delicious chocolate fondue with pretzel bites, apples, strawberries, and marshmallows. COMMUNITY ATMOSPHERE

The Living Room has a concept that has definitely caught on. Maybe it’s because people need to gather more since the social media trend has replaced that face to face communication. Whatever it is, you can be assured of an enjoyable evening joining neighbors or meeting new friends. A wonderful wine list has selections with wines not often found, a $5 a glass Happy Hour and a couple recommendations under “Tom’s Picks” to try, which will satisfy even the pickiest wine enthusiast. “When our guests leave we don’t say good-bye, we say ‘See you Tomorrow!’” states Watson. “It’s not unusual for guests to come back two or three times a week.” On Friday and Saturday evening enjoy music by a DJ. You’ll find live music playing every Sunday afternoon from 4 - 7:30 p.m. Check their website for more information about upcoming wine tastings and other events. HOURS: Sun – Thurs 11 a.m. – 11 p.m.

Roll into Spring SPRING ROLLS WITH SPICY PEANUT SAUCE ARTICLE SUZETTE ZARA | PHOTOGRAPHY JOY REYNOLDS

A

s Spring rolls in, temperatures are beginning to rise. Here’s an easy way to create beautiful Spring Rolls without heating up your kitchen. These “no bake” rolls are as delicious as the ones you find on the menu at popular Asian restaurants, and they are boosted with nutrition, thanks to the fabulous combination of fresh veggies. The Spring Roll has a long history, dating back over a thousand years to Saigon. Traditionally, a paper thin pastry is filled with shredded ingredients, then deep fried. This updated version uses reduced-fat ingredients, and it’s fresh, not fried, to keep calories low. As pretty as they are nutritious, these rolls are amazingly simple to create, using a technique similar to rolling a burrito. The rice paper shells are transparent, making a stunning visual presentation of the colorful veggies inside. The zesty peanut sauce is also incredibly simple; it can even be mixed by hand, making these rolls a fast fun project to cook with kids. These Spring Rolls are also an excellent way to add more nutritious kale in your diet. Kale, the “queen of the greens,” is high in the antioxidant vitamins, calcium and iron. When selecting kale, choose small, deeply colored, moist leaves. The peppers and carrots add a nice crunch which contrasts well with the creaminess of the avocado, while the mushrooms add a heartiness, making these rolls a good entrée as well as an appetizer. The freshness and lightness of these Spring Rolls make them a perfect dish for recovering from an indulgent Easter feast.

INGREDIENTS

Spring Rolls: • 6 rice paper wrappers • 1 avocado • 1 carrot • 4 medium mushrooms • 1 small red pepper • ½ cucumber • 6 fresh basil leaves • 6 kale leaves 24 Chandler Lifestyle | May 2014

Sauce: Stir together all sauce ingredients until smooth. (You may use hand mixer on low speed if a finer texture is desired). Rolls: To prepare the rolls, cut all veggies into long thin strips. Working with one wrapper at a time, dip rice paper wrapper in warm water to soften, then place one piece of kale leaf down center of wrapper, topping with remaining strips of veggies and two tablespoons of sauce. Fold up bottom, then left and right sides into middle (similar to folding a burrito). Roll up as tightly as possible. Serve promptly, or refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve with hot mustard and Spicy Peanut Sauce for dipping. Serves 2-4. Cost per Serving: $0.88 (Note: Rice Paper Wrappers are available at most major supermarkets; they are easily found at Safeway in the refrigerated Asian section, near Tofu.) Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort FOR 100 YEARS THE HISTORICAL RESORT BOASTS A VARIETY OF AMENITIES

ARTICLE MEGHANN FINN SEPULVEDA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY SAN MARCOS GOLF RESORT

I

n 1912, when Dr. Alexander J. Chandler founded the city of Chandler, he was determined to build a resort that was designed to resemble an oasis in the desert. His dream included pools, golf, tennis, horseback riding and polo. The resort was intended to hold social gatherings and shopping was planned nearby. For years, the San Marcos Resort hosted celebrities, politicians and other notable guests. Today, the resort, located in historic downtown Chandler, still maintains the original vision of Dr. AJ Chandler, and is a destination that sets it apart from others.

RESORT AMENITIES

Designed for both business and leisure travelers, the resort features a variety of modern amenities so that guests don’t ever have to leave the property. From dining, tennis courts, outdoor pool, and 18-hole golf course with driving range, there are plenty of activities for everyone. High-speed and wireless internet, and a business center, with copying, faxes and printer services, is ideal for those away on business travel. A health and fitness center includes cardiovascular and strength-training equipment. DINING OPTIONS

AJ’s Café serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. It features traditional all-American cuisine and several monthly specials including a three-course dinner, fish fry, prime rib dinner, and Sunday brunch. The 1912 Lounge is ideal for those travelers interested in stopping by for a cocktail and appetizer before dinner or a night on the town. The San Marcos Coffee House brews Starbucks coffee and features light breakfast items such as pastries, muffins and sandwiches. Room service is also available from 6 a.m. to midnight. 26 Chandler Lifestyle | May 2014

GOLF

The beautiful 18-hole USGA championship traditional golf course was the first in Arizona that featured grass. Salt-cedar shade trees keep golfers cool in warmer months. The pro shop is open from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Golf lessons taught by PGA professionals and assistant professionals are available for adults and junior golfers. MEETINGS, EVENTS AND WEDDINGS

For those who are planning a large corporate meeting, social event or wedding, the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort is a perfect venue. Credit Card Debt is on the Rise W

ith consumer confidence growing, many consumers are pulling out their credit cards once again and forgetting about their savings accounts. A recent survey by Bankrate.com found that almost 30 percent of Americans have more credit card debt than they have in savings. Additionally, only 51 percent have enough emergency savings to pay off their credit card debt. In the last quarter of 2013, America’s debt, which includes mortgages, auto loans, student loans and credit card debt, rose 2.1 percent or $241 billion. That is the largest increase since the third quarter of 2007. “People are feeling more confident in their financial situation,” states Jana Castanon, spokesperson for Apprisen. “They have endured the struggles of the last six years and are rewarding themselves at the expense of accumulating more credit card debt. It seems many have forgotten the lessons of the past.” Before credit card debt gets out of control, Apprisen offers some tips to decrease debt and increase savings: Write down all of your outstanding debts. It’s important that you know who you owe and how much. Make a list of your creditors, balances, interest rates and minimum payments due. Once you look at the total, you might be surprised at how fast the debt accumulated and be more motivated to pay it off. Create a spending plan. Allocate every dollar that comes into the household, to a specific spending category. Don’t forget to include your periodic expenses, such as gifts, clothes, insurance, etc. 28 Chandler Lifestyle | May 2014

Then, look for ways to increase income or decrease expenses to generate additional cash flow to apply towards your debt. Create a debt snowball. Make minimum payments on all of your debts except for the one with the lowest balance or highest interest rate, whichever you decide you want to pay off first. Then apply the additional cash you have “found” in your budget to that payment. When that debt is paid off, take that whole amount and apply it to the next account. Make a commitment not to use your credit cards during this time. Transfer a set amount from your paycheck to a savings account. Increasing savings is equally important as paying down debt. Automatically transfer a specific amount from your paycheck to a savings account. Be realistic in what you are putting in. If you are putting in $50 and taking out $50, you are defeating the purpose. If you could only put $20 in and leave it in, you will be more successful in building your emergency fund. “Sometimes, it is too easy to fall back into old patterns of behavior,” continues Castanon. “Before it’s too late, make a conscious effort to get your debt under control and your emergency savings funded, so when the next life event happens you will be financially prepared.” Apprisen, a national nonprofit credit counseling agency, has been helping consumers manage their finances and get out of debt for almost 60 years.

Parting Thoughts

Greetings from Zin City WORDS DENISE SNODELL

I

have a dirty little secret. I’m a non-gardener who has somehow slyly scraped the earth’s surface. Yes, it’s true I’m not ambitious about “planting things.” While other suburbanites take pride in nudging photosynthesis, I am clueless. Clueless. My hidden outdoorsy adventure has nothing to do with homegrown veggies and herbs, either. Nice concept, but I thrill at harvesting crops in the grocery produce section only. It’s all prepicked and shiny and waxed. Nice. Whatever it takes to avoid the effort involved with growing cornucopia fillers, I’m there. But flowers are a different story. I cultivate some myself. Crazy as it sounds, every summer, all summer long and into fall, my house is bursting with colorful, artful bouquets from my very own secret garden. It’s not exactly a garden. My planting area is a little patch of sloping not-grass on a narrow side yard, right up against the house. Picture this glamorous triangulation: a small area of lumpy dirt just below the dryer vent, smack dab between a small concrete door slab and a spidery window well. What I just described is the opposite of a British flower scenario. (English people set the bar for lovely flower gardens.) If I were, say, an outskirt Londoner, my so-called garden would instead be in full view, punctuated with a delicate iron trellis and an antique stone bench, just beyond a row of fragrant, exotic roses. But here I am in Middle America, with the frumpiest set-up the outdoors can offer. Did I mention the dryer vent? Fear not, when warm weather hits, I have some stuff even British royalty would die for. Good ol’ blaring American sun. A few cheap packets of zinnia seeds. A watering can. And southern exposure. Take that, Queen. The thing about zinnias is they’re perfect cutting flowers. And that’s why I’m a big fan. Probably many people who know what they’re doing plant zinnias as part of a sweeping, stay-put master-gardened

34 Chandler Lifestyle | May 2014

grand plan. Their zins might serve as an untouchable color patch to transition the eye from, say, hydrangeas to box hedges. That sounds horrible, in retrospect, but it’s coming from me. What do I know? Nothing. So how did this whole zinnia thing happen? By accident. Years ago, I received a free seed sample in the mail. I think it was from a real estate agent. Can’t remember. The packet showed such a colorful mix and stated these suckers were great cutting flowers. When I noticed the instructions advised to plant the seeds just a quarter inch deep in the soil, I was totally on board. A fraction of an inch meant no worm encounters and no complications. Plus, I knew there was that un-mowable bare section at the side of the house, soaking up all that sunlight in vain. My cutting garden was born. It’s been bouquet city ever since. Inspired, but not a gardener? Trust me, zinnias are so forgiving. They can get thirsty, yes, but who wouldn’t with all that sun? I’m sure garden clubbers have strict “how to” rules, but I plant my little buddies on my own schedule—sometime in the spring, when I feel like it. I always drop the seeds too close together, oops. Some years I fertilize the soil, others I don’t. Regardless, the zinnias always show up, and they’re always beautiful. My only advice, other than “just add water,” is to make sure you buy seeds labeled “giant” or “super giant.” Ka-pow! It’s a good idea to have garden scissors, too. Upon the first wave of blooms, I run with mine.
