feel like most of us would say this is probably one of the most challenging and weirdest years any of us has seen in our lifetime. I mentioned to my two kids that 2020 is a year that their kids will read about in history books, digital textbooks of course. With our January issue being themed with “Health & Wellness”, its is only fitting to make sure we all take a moment to give kudos and cheers to our first responders,

As a community, we have come together to deal with the craziest of circumstances, protocols, and situations that we will most likely not see for another 100 years. No doubt they, and us, all need a break. Its to all of you, the Colorado Springs Community, that I personally give a shout out to. Weathering the storm, dealing with financial hardships, and supporting our business community, our neighbors, and all the people we touched this year. And with that, lets kiss 2020 goodbye! 5 simple ways to relieve stress ARTICLE BRIANNA TOWNE, MS PHOTOGRAPHY ASHLEE KAY PHOTOGRAPHY

EVERYONE IS LOOKING FOR LESS STRESS. The problem is our identities are often tied to our stress levels. The ability to slow down, take a break and rest can only come when you allow yourself to let go of your identity as someone who’s always “on” and always providing or working or hustling. I see it daily with the clients I work with: constantly running in fight-or-flight mode, fatiguing adrenals, terrible sleep, but the real issue is that they’re not willing to allow themselves to rest because hustling is a part of their identity. Stress is a silent killer. It’s the precursor to almost every illness. While we need some level of stress in our lives, we can’t live in it constantly. Chronic stress can lead to everything from heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers and weight gain to depression and anxiety. The following are my 5 favorite ways to de-stress and turn off that constant fight-or-flight mode. In addition, try adding this warm ginger citrus tonic to your nightly routine to unwind and relax instead of grabbing a glass of wine. CONTINUED >

:: S TE P 1 :: Meditation is one of the best ways to tap into the sympathetic nervous system and release stress. To start, sit quietly with your eyes closed for 3-5 minutes daily and just breathe. If thoughts come up, notice them, and let them go. Don’t cling. If you feel yourself getting distracted, count your breaths and focus on the gentle rise and fall of your belly. :: S TE P 2 :: The best type of exercise is one that you enjoy. Good news is, the exercise you enjoy can also help reduce stress levels. Yoga, running, weight training, cycling, whatever you enjoy. Aim for fitting in movement 3x/week for optimum benefits. :: S TE P 3 :: The foods you eat absolutely can contribute to your stress response. Large amounts of processed foods, added sugars, caffeine and alcohol can spike cortisol (stress hormone) levels. Opt for real foods, lots of veggies, fruits and whole grains to keep stress and blood sugar levels balanced. :: S TE P 4 :: Prioritize sleep. The number one indicator of chronic stress I see in patients is poor sleep. Turn off screens at least 1hr before bed, keep your phone out of the bedroom, get blackout curtains and an eye mask. If you find yourself tossing and turning all night, keep a journal or notebook and pen by the bed so you can get pesky thoughts out of your head. :: S TE P 5 :: Adopt an attitude of gratitude. Gratitude is an incredibly effective way to lower your stress levels while making others feel better, too. It’s a win-win! A few ways to express gratitude: write a list of 10 things you’re thankful for before bed each night, say ‘thank you’ more often, write letters to friends for no reason other than to say hi and thanks. Don’t forget yourself! Each day, thank yourself, your body, your mind, for all it does for you.

COLORADO’S NATURAL SPACES SAW A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN VISITATION AND USE IN 2020, SPURRED BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. This increased interest in visitation and discovery of the state’s public land provides an opportunity to educate all Coloradans and visitors about backcountry safety and the State’s strong outdoor ethos, which must be respected to conserve natural lands and maintain healthy wildlife populations, enjoyable outdoor recreation opportunities and tourism economy. The Colorado Tourism Office is raising awareness of backcountry risks and the importance of backcountry education by encouraging Coloradans and visitors to stay safe while having fun in the outdoors this season. This initiative was developed as a collaboration among three state agencies -- the Colorado Tourism Office (CTO), the Outdoor Recreation Industry Office and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) -- to reduce pressures on natural resources, Colorado Search CONTINUED >

KEEP YOUR BODY + MIND HEALTHY THIS WINTER Let’s face it… Winter makes it tougher to stay healthy. And this winter is tougher than average. Colds. Flu. A global pandemic.

Let’s get down to the cellular level for a moment. How do you support each cell’s metabolism? You could pick any cell in the body, but since we’re dealing with a pandemic, let’s choose an immune cell.

COLORADO SPRINGS IS A CITY ON THE CREST OF A RENAISSANCE. As someone who has bounced from city to city, I can tell you there’s no place quite like The Springs. Our community is fired-up, engaged and fiercely protective of our small businesses. This is especially true for our restaurant industry, an industry that has been enjoying a culinary revolution over the past several years. And while pandemic-related lockdowns may have hampered things a bit, that hasn’t stopped our community from doing everything it can to keep our great restaurants afloat. There’s no place like home, and ours is one worth fighting for. Here are 6 local restaurants offering exciting carry out options.
