Sweet. There’s nothing quite like homemade cookies, baked for sharing with people you really care about. That’s the spirit of the holiday season. At Silver Star A.G., we embrace the notion that when you do good things for people, people do good things for you. And so while we invite you to celebrate the holidays with something sweet from Silver Star A.G., we mostly want to wish you a happy and healthy holiday season.

Celebrating.
DECEMBER 2015
T
hinking of the upcoming holiday season in December as I write this letter (in October), I reflect on its current state of “madness.” December madness beats “March madness” by light years and has become a national catharsis that transcends in many ways the religious significance of Christmas and Chanukah—not just in our Conejo Valley community, but throughout the U.S. Deloitte forecasts November and December holiday spending to increase 4 percent from last year to $960 billion (excluding autos and gas). In an area of relative affluence like the Conejo Valley, we will certainly contribute to that total. Gifts, decorations, parties….all just plain having fun. In many ways, the holidays are magic. As a child I would walk into Wanamaker’s Department Store on Market Street in Philadelphia and see the huge Christmas tree, all of the goods just waiting to be bought and the beautiful decorations. WOW!!! Or the ice rink and Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center in New York. The season is a blast, and we deserve it. After all, we’ve been good all year. More importantly, this time of celebration, Christmas for Christians marking Jesus’ birth and the beginning of Christianity, and Chanukah for Jews commemorating an unlikely victory over oppressive Greek rulers of the Holy Land, provides an annual opportunity to reflect on the joy of family, friends, neighbors and even strangers, particularly those less fortunate than us. In our family, it’s a delight to see the children light the Chanukah candles as several generations of family watch the candlelight glow on their beautiful faces as we celebrate the triumph of light over darkness. Some of my fondest holiday memories are also of a Christmas party in Pennsylvania when my daughter’s family and friends gathered at the home of the most musical family I’ve ever met. We sang Christmas carols, and earlier that evening, wearing a Santa Claus suit and carrying a bag full of toys, I had knocked on the door. “Oh, Santa’s here,” said my granddaughter Sophie, as she answered the door and let me in. The entire experience was like being in a Frank Capra film. We are a religiously mixed family, by the way, as is quite common these days. Celebrating holiday traditions—whatever your beliefs—with family and friends is what the spirit of the season is all about—coming together in joy and celebration. All of us at Conejo Valley Lifestyle wish all of you a wonderful holiday season. Most of all, love each other and be kind. Our world needs all the love and kindness we can give. Happy Holidays! he Conejo Valley may quite possibly have more genuine entrepreneurs per capita than any other place in the United States. And statistics aren’t necessary to prove it, as the evidence is the spirit and presence of so many new businesses and independently successful people in the local business community. One such new business is Rootementary in Westlake Village. Founded by Laura Lloyd, a finance and business operations executive with more than 20 years of diversified experience, and Guy Matthews Dee, a professional stylist with over 25 years in the industry, Rootementary is creating a business around filling a need that was previously not conveniently available to customers. Designed to offer its clientele refreshed hair color in between regular stylist appointments, Rootementary opened its doors on Oct. 14. “We’re not here to replace your personal stylist,” says Dee. “We are branding a new salon concept: No cuts!” An issue often faced as people age is graying hair. No matter how diligent the grooming, persistent gray hairs somehow manage to rear their ugly roots long before the next scheduled appointment with the hair stylist. 16
Conejo Valley Lifestyle | December 2015
“Something happens as you get older,” says Lloyd, a Westlake Village resident. “You notice a few random gray hairs at your root and around your hair line and you wish they would just disappear. Not only are these gray hairs a reminder of aging, but a mental note that you have to find time in your busy schedule to make an appointment at a salon and spend a pretty penny to cover those gray hairs up.” Rootementary’s unique salon concept offers top-quality hair color touch-ups at affordable prices in a modern, convenient high-end salon environment and eliminating the mess and hassle of in-between dying out of a box. “We offer clients a menu of services—everything from a quick one-hour root touch-up to a complete set of highlights,” says Dee, former owner of the successful Guy Matthew Salon and Day Spa in Agoura Hills. “Our colorists will make sure each customer’s look and experience is fantastic before they check out,” adds Lloyd. “We guarantee you will leave Rootementary looking great and feeling it, too! PACIFIC FESTIVAL BALLET’S NUTCRACKER

he time-honored tradition of attending Pacific Festival Ballet’s famous Nutcracker Ballet featuring guest artists Tiler Peck and Gonzalo Garcia, principal dancers from New York City Ballet, is upon us. “This is our sixth year returning to Pacific Festival Ballet. We enjoy the professionalism and warmth of the company,” says Peck. Regional guest artists and PFB alumni alike return to perform in this exquisite event comprising a cast of 150 dancers. The breathtaking collection of talented dancers, opulent costumes and detailed staging culminate in a delightful snowfall for the entire audience to experience. Pacific Festival Ballet’s longevity goes beyond the return of seasoned dancers. Commitment to the arts and community outreach has been an integral part of PFB since its inception. The Plié’ Project, providing exposure to dance through the Boys and Girls Club, is one example. Inspired by Misty Copeland, an American Ballet Theatre principal dancer whose eyes were opened to the majesty of dance through her own local Boys and Girls Club when she was 13, the project has brought the joy of dance to many other young people like herself. “Support for the Kids,” founded by Linda Miller, is another community program that helps children by donating food, clothing, shoes, school supplies and personal items. PFB donates some 100 tickets annually to provide kids a chance to experience the arts. Its longstanding partnership with the Alliance for the Arts assists children from underserved schools by providing outreach performances at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. PFB also shares the beauty of dance with Casa Pacifica and Senior Concerns, among other community outreach programs. PFB has been the resident ballet company of the Civic Art’s Plaza since 2000. The founders, Joyce Hurley, Kim Maselli and Lori Sorensen, had a vision of bringing a regional ballet company to the Conejo Valley in 1992. “Dance, ballet in particular, has always been a vital part of my life,” says Maselli. “I feel the importance of passing on what has been poured into me.” The company’s training school, California Dance Theatre in Agoura Hills, celebrates 30 years of training dancers from Mommy and Me to High School as well as dancers on their way to professional dance careers. The adult program is also flourishing with

Celebrating Hanukkah: Happenings & Highlights

he upcoming holiday season includes a wide range of joyous celebrations in our local community for families of all faiths. This year, Hanukkah begins at sunset on December 6, lasts for eight days and concludes the eve of December 14. Hanukkah, or “Chanukah,” as it is sometimes spelled, is a festival of lights celebrated by many to commemorate the victory of the ancient Israelites over the Syrian Greek army and the restoration of the menorah in the Holy Temple of Jerusalem. Many family-oriented and fun-filled community events offer an opportunity to celebrate the season. DECEMBER 6 THE SHIRETTES AT TEMPLE ETZ CHAIM

ou know a good story when you hear it…how about more than 600 versions of the same one? The story is the happening of the first Christmas—the birth of Jesus, presented in many different ways with the same cast of characters at No Room at the Inn’s 23rd Annual Nativity Display. Ranging from simple and inexpensive to elegant and elaborate, the Nativity displays hail from many countries, including Mexico, Alaska, Germany, Spain, Italy and South America. From tiny to those with 2’-tall figures, the unique displays are made from a variety of materials, such as fine porcelain, clay, wood, metal, crystal, cloth and even seed pods. Fifty-three countries and cultures were represented at last year’s exhibit. In the 23 years since the first No Room at the Inn display, the organization has donated more than $380,000 to programs for the homeless in Ventura County. While the displays inspire and delight 24

those who view them—which included some 1,000 people who came to last year’s exhibit—the organization’s mission is to “celebrate the true meaning of Christmas by: 1. Focusing on the humble birth of the blessed Baby, Jesus, two thousand years ago. 2. Helping those for whom there is also ‘No Room at the Inn,’ the homeless.” Inspired by a conversation at a Christmas party between avid Nativity set collectors Judy Crenshaw and Huw Howells, No Room at the Inn was born of their desire to share with others the variety and beauty of the depiction of that first Christmas and to help the less fortunate, and what more appropriate group than the homeless? After Huw’s death, his widow, Nora Howells, and Judy made the dream come true. From its first public Nativity display event in 1993 at the Camarillo Junior Chamber of Commerce, No Room at the Inn has continued to invite guests to view the story of Christmas told through its

No Room at the Inn’s 23rd Annual Nativity Display Grand Opening Gala takes place on Friday, December 4 from 6-9 p.m. and includes entertainment, delicious appetizers, gift baskets and a silent auction, great for holiday shopping. Requested donations are $45 per person at the door. Taking place through December 6, this year’s display is hosted by Padre Serra Parish, located at 5205 Upland Road in Camarillo. Weekend exhibit hours are Saturday, December 5 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, December 6 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Donations are $5 for adults, and $1 for children. The Silent Auction continues throughout the weekend, and special activities just for kids include a Children’s Corner with crafts and special costumes for dressing up as a Nativity scene character. Holiday Homes Tour & Lights Display ARTICLE MIRA REVERENTE PHOTOGRAPHY FORREST FRIELDS AND CHAD JONES
A
long with festive music, cooler weather and an abundance of holiday-themed treats, nothing quite ushers in the holiday season as well as lavishly decorated homes and brightly lit neighborhoods. These colorful displays of lavish lights herald the holiday season, as if officially declaring the holidays have arrived. This feast for the eyes takes many forms. In Camarillo, the Meadowlark Service League (MSL) puts on an annual “Homes for the Holidays” tour, showcasing homes in the area and selling tickets to the public to raise money for local charities and provide scholarships to deserving youth. Now in its 37th year, this year’s tour is scheduled on Sunday, December 13 from 1 to 5 p.m. and will feature three to four homes in the Camarillo and Pleasant Valley areas, says Rosalind Prieto, publicity chair of the all-women nonprofit organization. “Homeowners volunteer to open up their homes and decorate as they wish,” says Prieto. “Most of them usually have a theme. We’ve seen an angel collection in the past, an extensive Charles Dickens Christmas mega-village and a doll collection from all over the world—it’s really up to them as long as it has a ‘holiday feel’ to it.”
Tickets are $30 if purchased in advance and $35 at the door. There is no set itinerary and tour-goers can start the tour at any home, says Prieto. The homeowners usually open up a section of their homes, the ground floor or the living room area, and refreshments are typically served while holiday music is playing in the background. “Aside from helping a good cause, people also go because they want to get decorating ideas for this year or next,” says Prieto, noting that some homeowners have their homes professionally designed for the tour, while some do it themselves. Tour-goers can also shop at the Red Barn Holiday Boutique at the historic Adolfo Camarillo Ranch, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on December 13. The free boutique is an ideal stop for tour-goers, where they can take a break and shop for homemade gifts made by local artisans. To kick off the day, a Champagne pretour brunch at The Manhattan of Camarillo, for $65, includes the price of the home tour. Brunch is from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and is open-seating. CONTINUED >

SNEAK PREVIEW
This year, Prieto let Conejo Valley Lifestyle in on a sneak preview of a home featured in this year’s tour: a one-of-a-kind palatial Roman villa in Spanish Hills designed by renowned architect William Squire and built by Dirk Squire Construction. This architectural masterpiece, with more than 10,000 square feet of interior living space, showcases master craftsmanship integrated with exquisite interior design by Cheryl Collins. The truly world-class home has numerous magnificent ornate columns, architectural moldings and marble imported from around the world, says Prieto. “The magnificent entry is designed to impress with a custom marble sunburst leading to a drop-down coliseum-styled living room,” she says. “It’s equally breathtaking outside with a ‘piece de resistance’ swimming pool incorporating elements of the Trevi Fountain, and complete with an Italian garden surrounding the property.” The Holiday Homes Tour attracts some 800 visitors annually and is one of MSL’s three large fundraisers. W
hen three University of California, Santa Barbara students went to Uganda to help in an orphanage, they didn’t know the trip would forever change their lives— and the lives of hundreds of other women and children. “We fell in love with the kids, and we fell in love with the people,” recalls Natalie Lemonnier, who traveled to Uganda for the first time with a Bible study group, including friends Nikki Foster and Alea Boult. During the “life-changing” trip, the trio met Sam Mugoya and Cathie Amede, founders of a nongovernmental organization called WOCAP: Widows and Orphans Community Action Plan. Working with some 225 Ugandan women and their children, WOCAP helps to alleviate poverty through targeted programs like the Beads Project, where women learn to make jewelry with beads made from recycled, dyed paper. The jewelry is one way the women can generate income to help support their families. Inspired by the women they met in the WOCAP program, Lemonnier and her friends were moved to help in some way. “Their joy is contagious,” says Lemonnier, who is originally from Agoura Hills.“We were also so struck by their hope, which is so much bigger than their challenges.” Upon learning the market for jewelry was saturated in Uganda, Lemonnier decided to purchase some jewelry to sell in the U.S. “We really wanted to share their stories with the people living here and we want people to know that we can impact the world, and it’s as simple as buying a necklace,” says Allison Butin, fellow UCSB student and cofounder of BOH. HOPE EMERGES
Quick sales of the Ugandan jewelry in the U.S. spurred Lemonnier, Foster and Butin to explore how they could further support the women. Upon graduation, they decided to partner with WOCAP and launch a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization named Because of Hope (BOH), in honor of the Ugandan women’s strong faith and hope. “While they may physically experience poverty, spiritually they are so rich,” says Lemonnier. “These women have to rely upon God for things like where to get their next meal to feed their kids. God really is their source of hope, and this gives them joy and hope and confidence when they have none of it from their circumstances.” With the mission of “sustainably empowering widows and orphans in Uganda,” Because of Hope aims to create compassionate global awareness in our local communities and “to unite people from different continents and cultures with the purpose of generating lasting solutions to the problems that arise from poverty.” Partnering with WOCAP in its mission has enabled BOH to build on and expand existing programs that are already CONTINUED >

working and to actually talk with the women to learn about their specific needs and resources. “We’re committed to the women and sustainable empowerment,” says Lemonnier. “So we aim to develop programs with the women, not for them,” she adds. In addition to the Beads Project, BOH has helped to establish a scholarship program that enables children to attend quality schools nearby, as well as an agriculture program. “The past four years have seen significant improvement,” says Lemonnier. “We have been very, very blessed with the success of the program.” With a long-term commitment and a focus on targeting all aspects of poverty, BOH hopes to offer these women “a ladder out of poverty” and envisions being a “catalyst for change.” Through its student scholarship program, BOH aims to empower elementary through university-age students through education. “Education is a crucial component in creating opportunities for the future and breaking out of the cycle of poverty,” notes Lemonnier. The agriculture program implemented with BOH’s assistance and support also addresses both immediate and long-term needs by providing sustenance and income.
“The women had their first harvest from this program in August,” says Lemonnier, who says the women’s harvest yielded 10 times more crops by using the agricultural methods taught in the program.
“We’re probably more blessed to work with these women than they are by us. They’ve definitely changed our lives.” Because of Hope continues its work, powered by a small staff of eight full-time employees and a handful of interns. Based in Santa Barbara, the organization plans to develop additional programs that offer empowering opportunities to women and children in need. By incorporating existing programs, such as microfinance, animal husbandry and small business start ups, BOH provides these women with empowering opportunities to support themselves and their families. “We’re hoping to replicate the program in other areas after this group of women are self-sustaining,” says the 26-year-old business and economics graduate. And while the women and children in Uganda are incredibly thankful for the help and support of organizations like Because of Hope, Lemonnier says the rewards are mutual. “We’re probably more blessed to work with these women than they are by us. They’ve definitely changed our lives.” BOH Cofounder Natalie Lemonnier with Ugandan women

The GLA: Mercedes’ Smallest CUV ARTICLES AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN
C
ompact crossovers continue to populate the automotive landscape. These scaled-down utility vehicles are primed for urban use because they are small enough to slip easily through congestion, haul various kinds of cargo and do so while returning good gas mileage. The Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4Matic is one of the newest and it’s powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 208 horsepower. The base price of $33,300 puts it squarely in the sight of young buyers. The all-wheel-drive GLA is related to the CLA sedan. A frontwheel-drive GLA will be available next spring for about $2,000 less. Styling makes the new crop of compact crossovers appealing, and the little Benz is one of the best looking of its kind. It has a bold nose and a low, sleek roof that ends in a large tailgate. The GLA, at 173 inches long, 60 inches tall and 71 inches wide, is the smallest crossover Mercedes offers. It is roughly 5 inches shorter and 8 inches lower than the larger GLK crossover, whose base price is about $8,000 more. Even though all-wheel drive is standard and the car sits further off the ground (for that very occasional off-road trek), the GLA feels and drives like a sedan. The test car’s optional 19-inch wheels filled the
fenders nicely and added a beefy look, but the ride was often rather thumpy over expansion strips or sharp bumps. There was a fair amount of road or tire noise through the cabin at highway speeds as well. When I pushed the GLA hard into a turn, the tires felt a bit mushy. The 2.0-liter engine is rated at 24 miles per gallon in the city and 32 on the highway. I only drove the car for a little more than a day, and the onboard computer read 21.4 mpg in city driving. The twin-scroll turbo delivers decent torque, but I found that offthe-mark acceleration was a bit soft, due in part to the seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic’s tendency to shift into as high a gear as possible for optimum mileage. Mercedes says the base GLA hits 60 miles per hour in 7.1 seconds and has a top track speed of 130 mph. Switching from Eco to Sport mode brought noticeable life to the car, although mileage would suffer some. The engine seemed a bit noisy at full throttle. Performance buffs will be pleased to know that a GLA45 AMG is also available. Mercedes says it is the most powerful series-produced four-cylinder turbo in the world. It has 355 horsepower, and that’s a power output of 178 horsepower per liter. The base price for that jewel is $48,300. CONTINUED >

The transmission has a mode for light off-road use. The DSR (Downhill Speed Regulation) mode enables the car to control itself on steep descents. The LCD screen has an off-road display that shows percent of gradient, a compass, the roll angle and DSR activation. The GLA’s interior reflects the youthful audience for which the car is intended. Five round air vents dominate the instrument panel. A wood grain or metallic trim panel arcs across the dash behind the vents, creating a feeling of open space and style. Mbrace2 is an infotainment system that provides emergency notification as well as on-the-go access to the Internet. Owners are able to use their smartphone to lock or unlock the car from a distance and instantly find it in a parking lot. A 5.8-inch LCD screen (7 inches if you choose the multimedia option) sits in the center of the instrument panel. Navigation has a three-dimensional map option and a rearview camera. A mouse-like knob on the console can be used for navigation, telephone and audio settings, and separate controls are also located on the instrument panel. Climate-control knobs and buttons are housed near the front of the console. Voice commands are also possible. The front seats were nicely sculpted and comfortable for daily as well as sporty driving. Back-seat leg room was adequate, but those taller than six feet will be crowded. The back seat folds flat and there is a central pass-through to accommodate long items such as skis without having to fold the seat. The test car had a power tailgate.

Dealing with Stock Market Risk ARTICLE ROCKY MILLS
E
ssentially, there are two types of risk when owning stocks: • Individual stock risk—what happens to your portfolio when any one stock drops significantly in price, and • Market risk—what happens to your portfolio when the market as a whole falls.
time frames. The results consistently show that the average investor, by virtue of their emotional responses, earns much less than the mutual fund performance reports would suggest. DALBAR found that for the 20 years ending 2013, the average equity investor earned 5 percent per year while the S&P 500 returned 9.2 percent per year!
“Diversification”—holding many different stocks instead of just a few—helps to mitigate individual stock risk, and as such, is a staple of prudent portfolio management. But it does nothing to offset market risk.
Non-emotional approaches use measurable data to trigger the changes in your portfolio’s stock percentage. Let me give you some examples, citing the indicators you might use to vary your market exposure: • Economic GDP growth, unemployment rate, CPI, LEI, etc. • Fundamental EPS, profit margins, dividend rates, etc. • Valuation P/E ratios, PEG ratios, P/E vs interest rates, etc. • Momentum Price vs moving averages, volume flows, etc. • Behavioral Congressional (sell when Congress is in session) or “Sell in May.” In summary: • Diversification is good, but only deals with individual stock risk. • Static asset allocation, alone, will not protect your portfolio from a down market. • Employ dynamic, non-emotional triggers to reduce stock market exposure in falling markets.
There are two basic approaches for dealing with market risk: • Static—you allocate your assets such that the percentage of stock holdings (i.e., the market risk you are willing to accept) is appropriate for you. This allocation is not influenced by market conditions; it reflects your financial wherewithal and risk tolerance. Such an allocation is generally slow to change. • Dynamic—you modify your stock market exposure as stock market conditions change. The static approach is the easiest. It’s pretty much “set it and forget it”—you make a change only when there’s a change in your financial picture. This approach implies that you’re always in stocks, to the degree of your asset allocation. Most investors who have watched their portfolios plummet during steep market declines will tell you that a static allocation is not enough. There are times to be in the stock market, and times to avoid it. The dynamic approach can be implemented two ways: • Emotionally, or • Non-emotionally. Since 1994, DALBAR’s Qualitative Analysis of Investor Behavior has been measuring the effects of investor decisions to buy, sell and switch into and out of mutual funds over both short- and long-term 42

Wrap Less, Remember More
CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT ARTICLE RHIANNON BANKES
D
ecember is a month of remembrance and celebrations, but too often it is also a month of overwhelming obligations and rampant commercialism. The combination of guilt, stress, lack of sleep and overspending tend to turn the last month of the year into a whirlwind of overextended schedules. Don’t let negative emotions and unrealistic expectations take over this season. You won’t get a prize if you pack every spare moment with errands, shopping, and trying to make everything perfect. If anything, you will run yourself down and get a cold or worse. Promise yourself that this year you will focus on your family, friends and yourself. Let go of the picture you have in your mind of the perfect holiday setting. Whether that image is of an immaculately set dinner table, your pets gazing lovingly at your Christmas tree or your children delicately lighting the menorah, it’s rarely going to happen. What will happen is someone will spill wine on your antique tablecloth, your dog will chase your cat up the tree, and your child will try to light all the candles on the menorah the first night, not to mention their sibling’s hair. No one will remember how perfectly pressed your napkins were, but they are going to remember the touch football game everyone played in the back yard after the meal. Crank up the holiday music and make cookies. Snuggle on the couch to watch a movie marathon or football game. Make a new tra-

dition, sometimes the sillier the better: ice cream sundaes for breakfast or making a snow man without the snow. Pick a craft to make as a family or organize a scavenger hunt. Write letters to each other and yourself. Stick a short note in your holiday decorations box listing this season’s successful and not-so-successful adventures. When you open the box next year, you will remember how frustrated you were that you tried to make home made cranberry sauce when everyone just wanted the canned kind, but how much everyone loved spending a whole Saturday in their pajamas. Volunteer time to a charity or perform a community service project with your friends. Send care packages to military personnel and visit your local nursing homes. This holiday season, vow to spend less afternoons fighting the holiday crowds at the mall and more time on fulfilling activities. Make sure to allow yourself plenty of down time. A nice glass of wine or cocoa by the fire, or a hot bubble bath, puts a lot in perspective at the end of a long day. Reflect on all you have achieved in 2015 and decide what your goals are for the new year. Ask yourself what has made you smile the most this year and holiday season. Focus on incorporating those things into your 2016 schedule. Don’t drain yourself this December. Fill yourself with the hope and love of the season… and maybe a few more of those cookies.
