Lifestyle Letter
All Together Now C
onejo Valley Lifestyle is, as we regularly state, a community magazine. I thought it would be a good idea to pay a visit to what we mean by that simple statement. Why? Because there are so many divisive issues in national politics today and violence seems to dominate every news cycle. I came of age during the turbulent ‘60s and ‘70s, but some of this turmoil seems even greater than it was back then.
Fortunately, our Conejo Valley community is one of the best places in the entire country to live. The low crime rate, generally well-run and managed cities, excellent schools, relatively clean air compared to the rest of the region, great shopping, vibrant local economy… I could go on and on, but it’s the people who are the best part—those of you who live here. On a regular basis, as members of the local media, we see the tremendous amount of time, effort and money put forth by those who “have” to benefit those who “have not.” It’s not just about writing a check. It’s time, communication and compassion. While political storms divide the country, we just attended a matinee performance of Cabrillo Music Theatre’s production of “The Little Mermaid.” Hundreds of children from Ventura County Boys and Girls Clubs were invited guests. They are from minority communities who otherwise would probably not be given the chance to enjoy and learn about musical theater. They had a wonderful time. These kids, as you can see in our Good Times photo spread, are quite “diverse” and also quite happy to be attending the production. They are also part of the future of our communities and our country. Let’s make that a positive part. The Conejo Compassion Coalition, a consortium of local churches, does good work throughout the world, and Golden Heart Ranch, which we featured a few months ago, will become a life-sustaining destination for special needs young adults. Months after its publication, the story has become the most visited and read article on our website. Senior Concerns works very hard to sustain the quality of life for seniors who do not have the resources to do so themselves. There are many others as well. Personally, I have never before been part of a community that gives so generously of itself.

Sherwood Cares for the Community ARTICLE TRACY MARCYNZSYN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

ristine and picturesque, the Sherwood Country Club sits nestled at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains, serving as a premier golf and gathering site for several hundred members. Its world-class golf course has hosted nationally ranked players and professional tournaments, including the PGA TOUR, and its grounds have been the setting for movies, including “Tarzan,” “Birth of a Nation,” “Robin Hood” and “Bridesmaids.” Beyond its exquisite beauty and grandeur, the Sherwood Country Club rests on a foundation full of heart, known as Sherwood Cares. Formed by Club members to create an avenue for charitable giving, the Sherwood Country Club Charitable Foundation, Sherwood Cares, was established as a nonprofit 501(c)3 charitable organization in 2013. “The success of the Foundation has been phenomenal,” said Foundation Board of Directors President George Carney. “We have been so fortunate to have our members become actively involved in all aspects of creating an organization that truly sends the message that Sherwood does care.” ON A MISSION
With the mission of “Serving children and families in our community by supporting programs that address educational, medical, nutrition and safety needs,” the Foundation began accepting grant applications from local charities in 2015. Since that time, the Foundation 16

has generously donated $150,000 to 15 local charities, including Many Mansions, Casa Pacifica, the Conejo Free Clinic and Food Share. The Foundation accepts grant applications in two cycles annually—January/ February and July/August. Local charities are invited to visit SherwoodCares.org. The nonprofit is supported by Sherwood Country Club volunteers committed to running the Foundation, reviewing grant applications and organizing fundraising activities. The Foundation’s major annual fundraiser, Sherwood Cares Tennis Tournament, Evening Gala and Golf Classic takes place in May, and additional fundraising events include the Malamut Automotive Museum Tour, Sunset at Sherwood, and Sip, Taste & Treat. Currently, Sherwood Cares is preparing for professional golf ’s return to Sherwood Country Club in October at the PowerShares QQQ Championship. Sherwood Cares has partnered with PGA TOUR Champions to become the Official Charity Partner of the tournament, which will provide new opportunities to give back to the local community and grow the involvement and success of the Foundation as a whole. To promote charity, tournament officials have announced a “Buy Now, Give Back” initiative for the 2016 event. For every Daily Grounds ticket purchased by Oct. 17, the PowerShares QQQ Championship will donate a ticket to local charities through the Sherwood Cares Foundation. “PGA TOUR Champions has been dedicated to giving back locally and those values are reflected
in all of our actions,” Carney said. “We are grateful to be a part of this fantastic event.” The PowerShares QQQ Championship will be the first of three events in the inaugural Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs to determine the season-long Charles Schwab Cup champion, followed by the Dominion Charity Classic and the Charles Schwab Cup Championship. The top 72 players will compete in the PowerShares QQQ Championship for a $2 million purse, before a smaller field moves on to the Dominion Charity Classic and finally the Charles Schwab Cup Championship. “In this inaugural year of the PowerShares QQQ Championship, we look forward to developing our relationship and creating an enhanced benefit for CONTINUED >

We want both the members of Sherwood and the community to enjoy and be proud of this wonderful tournament.” “Charity is embedded in our culture, the foundation on which we build relationships, how we give back to the local community and what we feel is the right way to do business,” added PGA TOUR Champions President Greg McLaughlin. “We couldn’t ask for a better partnership than with Sherwood Cares, and all that they do for children and families here. he light is green… you go. It turns red… you stop. Pretty simple. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had a “red light, green light” indicator for your stocks? While no indicator is perfect, I have found moving averages to be pretty good. Moving averages are not predictive. Instead, they help you determine—after the fact—a stock’s trend. First, what is a moving average (“MA”)? It’s the average price for a chosen timeframe—such as 50 days. You would simply add up the past 50 days’ closing prices and divide by 50. Each day the MA changes, as you add one new data point and throw out the oldest one. Thus, each day this average is “moving.” Then you set a rule. For example: If your stock is trading above its 50-day MA, hold it. If it’s below, sell it. You should back-test your rule to see if it meets your objectives. It might be too sensitive and trigger too many changes. It might be too slow and miss key inflection points. You can back-test using most online charting tools, such as Yahoo Finance.

You can see that such a tool would not have gotten you out at the absolute high or in at the absolute low. Repeating: MAs are not predictive—they are trend following. Still, it did a reasonable job of participating in uptrends while protecting from a good deal of the downturns. I’ve developed a fairly sophisticated trend analysis system using a combination of MAs. It’s mainly for long-term investors who want to avoid protracted downturns. While I’m not about to disclose my methods here, let me give you a simple MA that you can back-test to see if makes sense for your longer term investing. It’s a 10-month MA. You only use the month-end closing prices—they’re easy to find on your monthly statements. Add up the last 10 prices and divide by 10. If the current month-end price of your stock is higher than the 10-month MA, hold it. If lower, sell. The chart shows the monthly closing prices of the S&P 500 in black and its 10-month MA in red.

Breaking Free of Brain Fog ARTICLE SHARON NORLING, MD
A
re you having difficulty concentrating, remembering names and appointments, and keeping track of your glasses or keys? Are you easily distracted and unfocused? Do you feel you are not as sharp or on-the-ball as you once were? Do you worry, “If I am like this now, what am I going to be like in 10 years?” In moments of desperation, do you wonder, “Am I losing it?” The loss of memory and mental sharpness is not a natural part of aging, but rather results from an accumulation of causes and deficiencies over the years. Examples of causes resulting in brain fog include • Toxins • Anxiety and depression • Depression • Neurotransmitter imbalance: low dopamine, low glutamate, low epinephrine • Metabolic diseases, such as thyroid gland conditions, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and lung, liver or kidney failure • Alcoholism • Vitamin B-12 and nutrient deficiency • Food allergies and gluten sensitivities • Insomnia • Smoking • Infections • Drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter.
22
Conejo Valley Lifestyle | September 2016
Memory Tools
TO KEEP BRAIN FOG AT BAY • Keep lists • Follow a routine • Make associations (connections), such as using landmarks to help you find places • Keep a detailed calendar • Put important items, such as your keys, in the same place every time • Repeat names when you meet new people • Do things that keep your mind and body busy
The good news is that the brain is plastic. Plasticity, or neuroplasticity, is the lifelong ability of the brain to reorganize neural pathways based on new experiences. Brain degeneration is not inevitable. You can reinvigorate, protect and maintain your brain. This requires that you “clean up your act” by removing toxins, supply your brain with essential nutrients and oxygen and enjoy a therapeutic lifestyle. CONTINUED >

ARE YOU EXPOSING YOUR BRAIN TO TOXINS?
If you drink unfiltered tap water, spray insecticides in your garden, smoke or eat foods packed with pesticides, you are exposing your brain to toxins. Personal skin care products are also filled with toxins, some of which are carcinogenic. Dangerous chemicals are found in toothpaste, hair shampoo, conditioners, shaving cream, antiperspirants and moisturizers. Avoid products containing the following chemicals: triclosan, laurel sulfate, formaldehyde, hydroquinone, phthalates, 1,4-dioxane, parabens, nitrosamines, lead and other heavy metals. Learn more about how chemicals impact your health and where they come from at SafeCosmetics.org. IDENTIFY & REMOVE TOXINS
Laboratory tests can determine what toxins are hidden in your body and affecting your brain so they can then be safely removed. Any product or event that causes stress and anxiety to the body creates inflammation. An inflamed brain does not function optimally. Delegate, meditate, breathe, exercise and let go of stressors that are other people’s responsibilities. Others sources of inflammation include food allergies, gluten sensitivities, chronic illnesses, insomnia, infections and neurotransmitter imbalances. Specific tests can determine if you have a food allergy, gastrointestinal infection or neurotransmitter imbalance. Once the root cause has been identified, therapies can be customized for an individual’s specific needs. If your neurotransmitters are out of balance, brain fog will occur. Low levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine or glutamate
create a lack of focus and cause low brain function. Neurotransmitter testing allows for personalized care. Imbalances can be treated with specific amino acids for better brain function. THE MOST IMPORTANT TOOL
According to renowned neurologist Dr. David Perlmutter, the single most important thing you can do to keep your brain functioning at its peak and prevent brain aging is pay attention to what you put on your plate. It’s as simple as that. Nutrition is the most important tool for staying mentally and physically fit and is by far the most underutilized tool. When you think about it, the way we live and heal is impacted by the quality of air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. The most important nutrient for your brain is fat. Yes, fat. Fat is not a four-letter word. Sixty percent of our brain is comprised of fat, and each of our 100 trillion cell walls (membranes) are 60%-80% fat. Brain-friendly fats include olive, avocado and safflower oil, as well as nuts and avocados. The bottom line is that you are in charge of your brain. You can be alert, focused and great at remembering details. Fixing your brain starts with your body. Eat well, decrease your stress, remove toxins, read labels and, above all else, have fun! Locally Owned THE MORTON TE AM OFFERS TIPS FOR
Home Buying & Selling ARTICLE JANET K. MORTON
As the Team Lead of a top-rated real estate firm in Los Angeles and Conejo Valley, I am often asked for details about home buying and selling. The Morton Team International answers some of the most common questions about buying and selling homes.
Q: When is the best time to buy or sell my home?
A
Many people feel the best time to make a move is during the summer. Quite a few professional industries are less busy during the summer months, which can make moving more manageable alongside a job. Also, families with children tend to find it more favorable to move during the summer when their children are on a break from school. Another thing people tend to consider when selling/buying is whether it is a seller’s market or a buyer’s market, however, it may not be as important to factor in as you think. If you are selling your home in a buyer’s market, what you may give up on your home sale you will make up for on your home purchase. Similarly, in a seller’s market, what you gain in your sale, you may pay for when you purchase. This tends to even out the perceived “gains” or “losses” in either market setting.
Q: Is it a seller’s market or a buyer’s market right now?
A
First of all, with interest rates currently being so low, it’s a great time to buy. That being said, the low number of houses currently on the market is making it a seller’s market. This means that sellers don’t feel the need to be as negotiable as they might at a time when many other comparable homes are available for buyers to choose from. CONTINUED >

There are several different options to handle this very common situation. One option is to put a clause in the selling contract that the sale of your home is contingent upon you finding your home of choice. Another option is to include a “rent back” clause in the sale contract, enabling you to rent

DINING OUT WITH A REALLY HARD-TO-PLEASE GUY ARTICLE BEN MALKIN
W
hen I wrote about dining out a year ago, I made it a point to let our readers know that Conejo Valley Lifestyle would only accept advertisement from restaurants that we would recommend to friends and family. That still holds true. I am a royal pain when it comes to being satisfied when dining out. Being a pretty good “home chef,” I am very reluctant to pay $100 to $200 or more in a so-called “fine dining” restaurant that serves mediocre food in a noisy room backed by subpar service. In fact, I rarely dine out unless I am traveling and have no other choice. Frankly, I’d rather eat a cheesesteak sandwich for dinner in Philly than get ripped off because there is a white tablecloth in front of me. We no longer go out to steakhouses because I can do better on my backyard Broil King. It’s easy. The steaks at Gelson’s or Whole Foods are better quality than what most restaurants serve. I do have several favorites. Unfortunately, none are Italian, which is my favorite cuisine. My veal chops, bolognese sauce, linguini and clams, chicken parm, lasagna and antipasto keep us right at home. When it’s time to dine out, I look for excellent food highlighted by fresh local ingredients, great preparation and presentation, reasonable prices for food and wine, good and knowledgeable service and, most importantly… a meal prepared differently and better than I can make myself. 36

BRENT’S DELI Let’s start with the basics, and what’s more basic than a deli? Since I am an East Coast Philly boy and have dined in the best delis that New York and Philadelphia have to offer, I was thrilled when Brent’s Deli opened in Westlake Village several years ago. I have never been disappointed at Brent’s. My favorites on their extensive menu (what good deli doesn’t offer what seems like a hundred or more choices?) are brisket, pastrami, cabbage soup and chicken matzo ball soup, their very evil steak fries, and the Spanish omelet. When I brought an ex-pat New York native business associate who was working and living in Ireland to Brent’s for lunch, he was almost in tears as he devoured a huge pastrami sandwich. Brent’s is often mobbed and rightfully so. 2799 Townsgate Road, Westlake Village, 805.577.1882, BrentsDeli.com

AROHA Next up is Aroha New Zealand Cuisine in Westlake Village. Aroha means “love” in Maori, and you will love the food and service. The menu revolves around fresh seafood, fish, lamb and venison from New Zealnd, as well as locally grown organic farm-to-market vegetables. Gwithyen Thomas, the owner chef, may still be in his 20s, but he brings years of international award-winning talent to the entire menu. When it comes to preparation, seasoning and presentation, Gwithyen is a minimalist. He allows the natural flavor of the food to shine through. The wine list favors New Zealand offerings, so if you enjoy an excellent Pinot Noir or Sauvignon Blanc, you are in the right place. My favorites are the Cloudy Bay Clams, New Zealand King Salmon, great crab cakes made with lump crab meat and the award-winning Horopito Crusted New Zealand Venison. He will also specially prepare gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian or allergy-sensitive dishes. The outdoor patio makes for a very pleasant dining experience for dinner or their special Sunday Brunch. 30990 Russell Ranch Road, Westlake Village, 805.405.5054, ArohaRestaurant.com
DELITEFUL LOW-CARB RESTAURANT & BAR Deliteful is new to our community. Delightfully different and delicious, this fine dining restaurant in the Oaks Mall is located on the lower level entrance across the parking lot entry to Nordstrom. Owner Tracy Webster offers excellent dishes minus the sugar and artificial sweeteners, 100% gluten-free ingredients and meat and poultry free from antibiotics, hormones and GMO feed and chemical additives like MSG. All this at first glance is almost too “dietary correct” for a macho guy like me, but I quickly got over it, because the food is excellent and the ambiance is first-class fine dining. Tracy is from South Africa and many of the dishes have that unique influence. They also have a full bar and a good wine list. The Short Rib Trinchado was perfectly braised and served with Peri Peri spices, bay leaves, black olives and seasonal veggies. I love braised meats, and this dish was to die for. The wild-caught salmon with mustard and dill was also perfect. Their grain-free, gluten-free breads are made from almond flour, coconut flour and flax meal and are more filling than traditional highly refined wheat flour breads. Their muffins and cakes are GfGf as well as sugar free and low carb. Stop by and visit Tracy. You won’t be sorry and you will surely come back for more. Casual Fine Dining. You’re Always Welcome. WHAT IS NEW ZEALAND CUISINE?
Back in New Zealand, whether surrounded by the backdrop of the Auckland harbour or the rolling hills of green grass and the smell of feijoa trees, locals are accustomed to fresh and organic meals at home and at the local restaurants. In one of Auckland City’s top restaurants or at the nearby pizza bar, dining out is not just another outing but a oneof-a-kind experience complete with top quality ingredients, beautifully plated dishes, and most importantly, an environment designed for the laid back Kiwi lifestyle. Many restaurants flaunt their trustworthy kitchens with open passes, allowing the customers to view the chefs from their seats. While a typical United States kitchen relies on pepper and other strong seasonings, the Kiwi chef prepares dishes designed to emphasize the natural flavor of the food and allow those flavors to pop.
ORGANIC, FRESH, & ALLERGY FRIENDLY.
Our menu consists of locally sourced handgrown and predominantly organic produce; free-range and grass-fed organic meats; and fresh seafood that’s flown in directly from New Zealand and served less than 48 hours fresh out of the water. Our kitchen and waitstaff are dedicated to providing a welcoming and safe environment for guests with allergies and dietary restrictions. Whether you’re gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, vegetarian, or otherwise, our chefs are always happy to accomodate you without sacrificing the flavors of the dish.

MOQUECA BRAZILIAN CUISINE Moqueca is, I am happy to say, another new entity in town, with a second location at the Oxnard Harbor. Their food is very different, and after my first visit, I gotta say, “Wow! Really great!” The most famous dish of Espirito Santo’s state is the “Moqueca Capixaba.” The name “moqueca” designates the method of preparation in a clay pot to cook the fish or seafood and vegetables. The ingredients can include lobster, shrimp, fish, onions, tomatoes, garlic, cilantro and unique Brazilian specialties like urucum seeds and malagueta pepper. These ingredients are added to a rich broth made from moqueca and yucca flour with a splash of coconut milk and then spooned over white rice with a few drops of some very spicy oil. Mix it up and dig in. Spectacular! Several other Brazilian chicken, fish and beef items are also offered on the menu, as well as pasta. I am ready for several return visits. 1610 Thousand Oaks Blvd, Thousand Oaks, 805.2303585, MoquecaRestaurant.com
TASTY ALTERNATIVES Until now, Wood Ranch in Agoura Hills was my only BBQ destination, but CharHouse at the corner of Lindero Canyon and Kanan Roads in Oak Park is a nice new alternative. They offer excellent ribs, tri-tip and sides. At the same location, On The Thirty offers an attractive sports bar theme. Both places give us “North Ranchers” a good alternative to driving into Westlake or T.O. When we visited On The Thirty, I found their pizza to be really good. The crust, sauce and cheese were right on target to satisfy my New York pizza taste. If you just have to visit a steakhouse, my first choice is The Grill on the Alley. Italian? I find most places are overrated or very ordinary. However, I might suggest Marcello’s on Hillcrest near the Oaks Mall for some unique regional dishes and really good lasagna. For the best Chinese food in the entire Conejo Valley, visit the Zen Garden in Oak Park. It’s worth the drive, and they also deliver. If you have a recommendation, please share it with us at ConejoValleyLifestylePubs.com

DISPLAY TALENTS ARTICLE KEN PHILLIPS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

ozens of local artists will display their extraordinary talents at the 13th annual Thousand Oaks Arts Festival Sept. 17-18. The two-day event features some 25 live musical, dance and theatrical performances on two stages, along with the artistic creations of more than 60 area artists working in various mediums, including oil, acrylics, watercolor, pastels, mixed media, sculpture, jewelry, photography and digitally created works. Children will enjoy hands-on art experiences, such as getting pointers on painting, music, dance and more. Headlining this year’s event is the multi-talented Bob Eubanks, serving as the 2016 Art Festival Honorary Chairperson. When it comes to entertainment, Mr. Eubanks has literally done it all. Starting his career as a disc jockey for a major Los Angeles radio station, Bob went on to host and produce a variety of television’s most popular shows, became a concert promoter for superstars, including Merle Haggard and the Beatles, and managed careers of music icons Dolly Parton, Barbara Mandrell and Marty Robbins. A long-time host of the Emmy Award-winning Rose Parade for 38 years, Bob holds nine Emmys and even has his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. No question, Mr. Eubanks has had an unbelievable career and humbly brings it all home, when he notes, “The Thousand Oaks Art Festival is one of the great events in our community and I'm very honored to be involved.” Two of the many talented individuals who will showcase their immense works in the festival exemplify the high caliber of performance and visual artists in the community.

KATHERINE HO - MUSICIAN & STUDENT Katherine Ho is the first-ever Art Festival Junior Honorary Chairperson. She is an accomplished teen, who will be entering her senior year in the fall at Westlake High School. Although nearing graduation, she already has a well-established musical career, but she’s just getting started and is destined for great things. The high point in her life, thus far, was being a contestant on Season 10 of NBC’s “The Voice,” in which she bested 40,000 other singers and made it through to the Knockout Rounds with “Team Adam.” “This was an incredible learning experience,” says Katherine. “Not only did I get to work with my musical idols, Adam Levine, Tori Kelly and Miley Cyrus, I also got to meet and befriend amazing fellow contestants. It was life-changing, but it’s really only the first step,” she says. Music has always been a part of Katherine’s life. From age 5, she began studying classical piano. By 9, she was taking singing lessons and, in elementary school, she participated in musical theater. Around this time, she also landed her first professional singing job in the film titled “Valentine’s Day,” which led to voiceover jobs for Disney and other roles. Throughout middle and high school, Katherine has continued voice and piano lessons, performing at talent shows and singing in her high school choir. She’s also vice president of the Bazooka Music Club, a community service group of musicians that performs at senior living homes in the area. In addition, Katherine and two friends produce a song and perform in an annual Chinese New Year celebration. She is also involved with the A Cappella Academy, affiliated with the multiple Grammy Award-winning a cappella group Pentatonix. With a great deal on her plate, Katherine keeps the stress level down by making food, watching “copious amounts” of cooking videos, and playing doubles tennis for Westlake High School in season. She often posts cover song videos on YouTube; user name singerkho. She is planning to go to college to further advance her knowledge. “I have to admit, I am still quite inexperienced in the music industry and I have so much more to learn,” she says. “Pursuing my passion is definitely not an easy road and I know I have to work so much harder to achieve my goals.” “I believe in music’s ability to bring light to the world. Music has done so many wonderful things for me and I hope to return the favor by improving the lives of others through music,” she adds. Katherine has already come a long way in her short life. She is looking forward to writing and releasing her own, original music in the future, which looks quite dazzling for this rising star.
I BELIEVE IN MUSIC’S ABILITY TO BRING LIGHT TO THE WORLD. MUSIC HAS DONE SO MANY WONDERFUL THINGS FOR ME AND I HOPE TO RETURN THE FAVOR BY IMPROVING THE LIVES OF OTHERS THROUGH MUSIC.

LOCAL ARTISTS DISPLAY TALENTS (CON TI N U ED)
The Thousand Oaks Arts Festival is free to the public and runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the Civic Arts Plaza and The Lakes Shopping Center. Free parking is available.
DELESPRIE SCULPTOR & TEACHER The featured artist for this year’s Thousand Oaks Arts Festival is sculptor Delesprie, who has been creating life-size statues and monuments for over 30 years. Locally, her work includes all of the statues and the water fountain at the Promenade in Westlake Village, the 18-foot “Angels” at The Grove in Los Angeles, and the featured sculptures at The Commons in Calabasas. She has also done some amazing sculptures of notables, such as Dwight Eisenhower, Dick Van Dyck, Sylvester Stallone, and the Firefighters Memorial in Orange County. Her works can be viewed on her website Delesprie.com. Delesprie is currently the owner of Bronze Masterworks in Ventura, where she creates her artworks and teaches aspiring sculptors. She previously owned National Heritage Gallery in Beverly Hills and has taught at Loveland Academy of Fine Arts, Studio Channel Islands Art Center, and California Arts Institute in Westlake Village. Delesprie, whose name in French means “from the spirit,” taught herself to draw when she was very young. As a teenager, one summer she went kayaking on a Canadian Indian Reservation and discovered the clay near her campsite was the perfect medium for forming solid images of the native children and elders she encountered during her stays. She loved working with her hands to shape her subjects, but also studied counselling and business, finishing that part of her education at California State University at Northridge. From there, Delesprie intensified her learning with professional art classes to more fully develop her sculpting skills and learn how “to see” her subjects from the inside out. She begins her sculpting process with a silhouette. Then, clay is applied in coils onto a core structure of wood and a steel pipe, paying attention to all sides of her model. Additional coils are added to fill in the exacting features. Delesprie says her technique allows her students to visualize how the structures of their subjects are put together from the inside. “Once they learn this process, my students can sculpt anything, regardless of their level of sculpting experience,” she notes. When she gives live demonstrations, she interacts with her audiences throughout, describing her process and answering questions as she is presenting. Delesprie obviously loves her work because she wants to “bring as much joy into this world as possible.” “People shouldn’t be dwelling on dark subjects,” she says. “We get enough on television and in our news. I want to bring happiness through my work that can be shared with everyone.” She holds classes in her Ventura studio on Fridays and can be reached at Delesprie.com or 818.269.8988. 46

T
he Conejo Valley enjoys a wealth of local artistic talent from all genres. While some artists push the envelope of creativity, often with great fanfare, others quietly go about their endeavors, adding beauty and brightness to our world. Helle Rasmussen is one of the community’s unsung heroes, quietly making her mark with stunning creations that enhance the environment while sharing her skills and love of art with students. Hailing from Denmark, Helle has lived in the Thousand Oaks area since 1998. Her influence as an art teacher has been significant on many school campuses, in homeschool programs, and in private lessons for scores of children and adults. Working with Helle, her students gain exposure to a wide variety of materials and media, as she is a student of all forms of art herself and likes to bring new artistic experiences and challenges to her classrooms. “I want to help my students expand their knowledge by discovering artists and their works from around the world,” she says. “Further, I want to nurture their imaginations and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills—all while having fun.” A mother of three, Helle has taught art to students of all ages over the past 15 years. She has worked with Art Trek and Art Masters programs teaching K-6th grade and has since developed many of her own lessons, while teaching homeschool students in Grades K-9. She developed Bridges Charter School’s art program, while teaching art on a voluntary basis to all grade levels throughout the school’s first year. A few years back, Helle was commissioned to paint murals at the Valley Beth Shalom in Encino.
“When you have something of your own, it feels good. No matter what it looks like, the most important thing is the process of creating and having a great time doing it. I love it when I see my students becoming passionate about artwork.”
Her first mosaic in the area was done with a Girl Scout Group at Earths Magnet School, as part of the young ladies’ Bronze Award project. The piece, which the group worked on throughout the summer of 2014, features a 9-foot diameter compass with the school’s mascot gecko designed at the center. Another of Helle’s large mosaic projects is located behind the Thousand Oaks Teen Center. With the students of One Spark Academy, Helle created an outside learning center with six benches and two tables decorated with mosaics. The students did the work during weekly art lessons for nearly a year, starting in 2015. Currently, Helle teaches the art of mosaics at the Conejo Valley Adult School and will add two more classes to her curriculum—Art History and linoleum printmaking—in the fall. Helle also does residential artwork to beautify homes, including her own. She has replaced her front lawn with flagstone intermingled with different mosaic designs. Additionally, she has started working on a home in Westlake Village that may take up to six months to complete. In her new home, she is already hard at work painting, mostly walls and ceilings. She says she likes keeping busy and creating, even if it’s not considered artwork. She plans to repeat her flagstone and mosaic yard design she recently completed at her old house. Helle finds great joy in teaching kids and adults, showing them how satisfying it is to create. “When you have something of your own, it feels good. No matter what it looks like, the most important thing is the process of creating and having a great time doing it. I love it when I see my students becoming passionate about artwork.”
The school’s director had seen some murals she had done at another school and wanted her to create something educational. “We ended up with all of the school’s 14 doors featuring trees, with each painted in a different art style and each inspired by a great artist. For example, the impressionist tree was reflective of Monet, the cubist tree was Picasso’s, and the Pop Art tree was an Andy Warhol inspiration.” Helle’s great passion for hands-on teaching, exploring new ideas and connecting with her students keeps her actively looking for new challenges to stretch her skills. About three years ago, she decided to expand her talents and learn to create mosaics. September 2016 | Conejo Valley Lifestyle

MANY HANDS MAKE LITTLE WORK
Parting Thoughts

ARTICLE KIM PAGANO
G
iving to someone else can be your best medicine. There are so many ways to give back. Money isn’t the only way to support your community. You can donate your time and expertise as well. The important thing is to find the best way to incorporate charity into your life. Since I have been doing my radio show, I have learned about so many amazing and worthwhile foundations, from organizations helping seniors and children, all our men and women who have served our country and wounded warriors, to serving the homeless and anyone going through recovery, or dealing with cancer, including our furry friends. Helping others will really warm your heart, especially when you see how much your care is needed and appreciated. If you have gently worn clothes that you no longer want or your children have outgrown, there’s another home waiting for them. As my parents always said, one person’s trash is someone else's treasure. Let's think of ways to be helpful in giving our time or God-given gifts to benefit others. Some of us might be wondering, how can I help anyone else when I’m just getting by myself? I believe whatever help you give to others comes back tenfold. Give and you shall be given, although that is not the reason to give, as giving should come from your heart, unconditionally. If you’re trying to figure out how to give, start with your time. What would be helpful if you needed help? In my eyes, there are so many ways to give back. You can also look at what you're passionate about and then look for ways you can help in that capacity. Usually the thing that comes easiest to you is probably your gift. You know, the thing you do without any thought, that people compliment you on, and that you love doing. For example, if you like animals, you might want to help out at a shelter or rescue foundation. If you are a teacher or love children,
Conejo Valley Lifestyle | September 2016
consider finding ways to help foster or young children who might have special needs, or mothers with more than one child. If you are passionate about seniors, they just might need someone to listen and spend time with them, and you’ll enjoy hearing their loving stories. I think of it as their jewels of life. In today’s world, food banks for people going through hard times always appreciate assistance with feeding hungry people. Maybe pick up a couple of extra groceries to share. Or your overabundance of cars, furniture, toys, computers, food, bedding, dishes, or stuff in just about any category would be greatly appreciated by several organizations that accept donations. When you start your day with your gratitude list, take a moment to see how you can share some of your life jewels with people who might not be so fortunate. In this busy world, remember that many hands make little work.
For more of the brighter side of the 805, tune into the Kim Pagano Show every Saturday from 6-8 a.m. pst on AM 1590 KVTA and start your day in a positive way.
