What Do Rosemary’s Clients Say?
“
“There is NO ONE like Rosemary!”
NO ONE knows real estate marketing like Rosemary... NO ONE sells like Rosemary... NO ONE advertises like Rosemary... NO ONE is connected to buyers and sellers like Rosemary! I’ve found it’s no secret that an essential quality of any successful business lies within its ability to not only forge new relationships, but to maintain and grow them as well, Rosemary has done that throughout her career. Rosemary Allison is the reminder that relationships matter, community service matters, her financial support of our neighborhood schools matter and being an advocate for her clients and their homes matters. There is NO OTHER REALTOR that you should call to represent you in selling your home. I could go on and on but I think you get the picture... Once we listed our home with Rosemary, she not only found our buyer within 2 weeks from her steller advertising, but her connections provided our buyer the lender who could help her purchase our home in less than 30 days. Rosemary Allison, we cannot “thank you and your team” enough for your professionalism in not only finding the right buyer but seeing each and every detail through to the end. Your work ethic and tenacity to get the job done was incredible. My family and I are forever indebted to you for seeing this through.

"May you live in interesting times" ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA, "MAY YOU LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES" IS AN ENGLISH EXPRESSION THAT IS CLAIMED TO BE A TRANSLATION OF A TRADITIONAL CHINESE CURSE. While seemingly a blessing, the expression is normally used ironically; life is better in "uninteresting times" of peace and tranquility than in "interesting" ones, which are usually times of trouble. Even though there is no equivalent Chinese expression, the English seemed to prefer to not take full credit for this spot-on irony.

This year is gratefully coming to a close and has been a tumultuous continuation of 2020. Just when we thought it might be “safe to go into the water” (does anyone hear John Williams’ “Jaws” theme in the background?) in January, the pandemic and social and political upheaval continued. In spite of it all, Americans and our local communities have been resilient and remained healthier than most and far less alienated from each other even when opinions differed. For example, when I shop at Gelson’s or Pavilions, everyone wears a mask and no one to my knowledge has had a temper tantrum over the mandate. Robin and I are venturing forth and attending some local events, dining outside at local restaurants and shopping for things we need (I avoid Amazon as much as I can). We

“THE NUTCRACKER”
18
Conejo Valley Lifestyle | December 2021
WHEN THE LAST CURTAIN CALL ENDED AT THE CLOSE OF “THE NUTCRACKER” 2019, NO ONE, EITHER ONSTAGE OR IN THE AUDIENCE, COULD EVER HAVE PREDICTED WHAT AWAITED US ALL. As we know now, the result of the pandemic brought the performing arts world to a standstill. Like a domino effect, theaters one by one went dark all around the globe. With footlights unplugged, dressing rooms empty and the cavernous Kavli Theatre a silent shell, Pacific Festival Ballet retreated into its cocoon, holding on to the hope of emerging sooner than later. As weeks turned into months and months into two years, the daunting reality of the COVID shutdown took its toll on the resident ballet company at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center. “In hindsight I am glad we did not know how long this shutdown was going to last. At first, we thought the closure would be a month or so and we would ride it out,” says Artistic Director, Kim Maselli. “Once we realized the magnitude of this pandemic and the long-term effects it could have on our company, we shifted from survival mode to ‘let’s get proactive’ mode.” Pacific Festival Ballet was in the midst of rehearsing “The Secret Garden” for their 2020 Spring season when everything came to a halt. By early summer the discussion of transforming this original ballet from a stage production to film was in full bloom. Creative minds explored options and new production teams went into action. Using the Conejo Valley as the background, dancers and crew found beautiful local landscapes to act as the film’s canvas. Often a crowd would gather as music and dance became a spontaneous stage distracting people from their everyday activities. The dance film premiered months later, projected on the side of a Westlake Village building with a red carpet and all. “People were so excited to come out with their lawn chairs and set up in a dark parking lot,” comments Jonathan Sharp, one of the film’s leading performers. “It felt like a grand event!” On the heels of the film’s success came the devastating news that theatre closures were extended indefinitely, and our Nutcracker 2020 season was cancelled. After celebrating 25 years at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza the year before, it came as a huge blow to Pacific Festival Ballet and the community as they realized this cherished holiday tradition was not going to happen. From seasoned professionals to the youngest patron, the disappointment was tangible. Pre-professional ballet student Abbey Wyrrick says, “For years I have trained diligently with the hope of pursuing a ballet career. I also have had the role of Clara in ‘The Nutcracker’ as a personal goal. To realize this dream was postponed and possibly never achievable was hard for me.” Once again, PFB went into problem solving and decided to venture into another dance film, this time on a larger scale. Instead of taking “The Nutcracker” from stage to film, the PFB board decided to bravely step in a new direction. One of Pacific Festival Ballet’s trademarks is producing original ballets as well as preserving and presenting the classics. With the COVID shutdown sending so many alumni and professionals home to the Conejo Valley, Pacific Festival Ballet decided to build an original CONTINUED >

holiday ballet showcasing these beautiful artists and incorporating the current dancers in our community. This new film, “A Holiday Angel,” was an artistic effort created for the moment. The ballet is designed to celebrate the holidays, but it also holds a message of recognizing and uniting cultures from around the world. “During the holiday season more than ever, I think people are willing to set aside their differences and embrace all that humanity has in common,” Maselli says. Partnering with TOArts Roadshows, “A Holiday Angel” premiered at The Lakes behind the Civic Arts Plaza to a parking lot full of supporters. The success of “A Holiday Angel,” along with the spirit of the holiday season, was recognized by the applause of honking horns! As the calendar passed into 2021, Pacific Festival Ballet continued to expand its platform by filming archived performance pieces, again using the Conejo Valley as its background. Parks, greenbelts and gardens became opportunities for pop-up art. Film provided a wonderful way to keep dance alive, but everyone was yearning for the live performance experience. At long last summer 2021 ushered in an outdoor performing opportunity at the beautiful Los Robles Gardens. For the first time in almost two years, an audience gathered and under the evening stars, music, dance and stage lights filled the amphitheater. On the heels of this performance came the announcement that Broadway and theaters around the country were opening their doors. That long-awaited moment had finally arrived! Now on any given day at Pacific Festival Ballet, the score of “The Nutcracker” drifts from multiple rehearsal rooms. Dancers practice in the hallways as costumes are pulled out of storage and refurbished. The wheels are in motion for the company’s biggest comeback. “The start-up process was more challenging than anticipated,” says Production Manager Paige Loter. “We have produced ‘The Nutcracker’ for so many years, but suddenly, this season, we were needing to hire new trucking companies, stage managers, costume designers, printing companies. It makes us realize how many organizations suffered from the COVID shutdown. We feel grateful that PFB weathered the storm.” The return to the Civic Arts Plaza’s stage is met with great anticipation. Stepping into the theatre whether as cast, crew or audience member will not be taken lightly.

GIVING BACK
E njoy t he Sight s and Sounds of a European Marketplace During the Holidays “HOLIDAYS IN THE VILLAGE, A EUROPEAN MARKETPLACE” CELEBRATES THE WARMTH AND JOY OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON WITH LOTS OF FOOD, MUSIC, KIDS' FUN AND ARTISAN AND CRAFT VENDORS—ALL WITH A EUROPEAN FLAIR. The Marketplace is Sunday, December 12 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Lakeview Canyon Road and Agoura Road (adjacent to Stonehaus) in Westlake Village. It is being hosted by the two Rotary Clubs of Westlake Village. "Our goal is to gather our community of friends and family to celebrate the holidays in a warm and joyful setting. We’ve created something unique in replicating a European village filled with festive food, drink, artisan vendors and seasonal entertainment for all to enjoy," says Erin Culbertson, event co-chair and president-elect of the Rotary Club of Westlake Village. Visitors can shop for unique holiday gifts offered by over 55 artisan vendors in a fun, family atmosphere. They can browse a large cross-section of items, from chocolates to alpaca yarn to homemade candles, succulents, glass ornaments and curated gift baskets. "A Holidays in the Village signature booth will offer specialty logoed ornaments, hats, beanies, village bears and our very own holiday beer and wine mugs," says Culbertson. "If you're looking for distinctive gifts this year, you'll find lots to choose from at the Marketplace. Many are handcrafted and one of a kind." The European Marketplace features a variety of traditional European foods, baked goods and beverages, including Gluehwein (a warm spiced wine), apple cider and hot cocoa. Visitors can enjoy a wide selection of specialty craft brews from local breweries, including Tarantula Hill, Five Threads, Enegren Brewing Company and Institution Ale, and selected wines from Stonehaus. Carolers and live music will entertain visitors throughout the day and evening. There will be plenty of children's activities too. Kris Kringle’s Village will feature Kris Kringle himself, a festive Grinch, a holiday-themed carousel and a village train. Something uniquely adventurous for families or those young at heart is the Village Bear Scavenger Hunt co-sponsored with Yarrow Family YMCA. Each participant will receive a complimentary teddy bear with a list of riddles and clues to search the Marketplace for hidden Village Bears. Event sponsors include Rosemary Allison/Coldwell Banker Realty, Ama Waterways, Pedego Electric Bikes, Face Focused, Daland Swim School, Home Helpers, Michael Lang Designs, McQueen & Associates, Brewer & Tominaga, Candu Graphics, Nadine Larson and Stephanie Eagle. Lakeview Canyon Road and portions of Agoura Road will be closed during the event. Admission and parking are free. Proceeds support local nonprofits. For more information, including sponsorship opportunities, visit HolidaysInTheVillage.org or email HolidaysInTheVillage21@gmail.com. Current COVID-related safety and health protocols will be strictly followed.

HANUKKAH IS VERY EARLY THIS YEAR (STARTS SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 28). Many of our Jewish readers as well as their Gentile guests at Hanukkah celebration meals that are dominated by piles of potato latkes and braised brisket (unless they were invaded by vegans) will have already enjoyed this year’s quota of delicious oily potato latkes. The latkes are actually a symbol (the oily part) of the triumph of the Maccabees in driving the forces of the Greek King Antiochus IV from the Temple in Jerusalem. After the battle as they rededicated the Temple, a one-day supply of ritual olive oil to light the menorah miraculously lasted eight days.

Well, any excuse to gobble down a tasty fried treat without any guilt is good enough for me. So if this article is a tad late, still better late than never. I have four secrets that make my potato latkes special and successful. 1. I cheat…instead of risking bloody knuckles and time spent wringing water out of shredded russet potatoes, visit the supermarket, buy bags of Simply Potatoes shredded potatoes. I then grind them up more in my food grinder and have perfect potatoes for latkes, all without the blood and water. 2. I use peanut oil. Unless there is an allergy to peanuts in the family, it is the best oil for pan frying. 3. Pan frying requires a pan that is perfect for that function. Luckily, I have a beat up 12-inch pan that works perfectly. It is nonstick, but more importantly, the sides slope in such a way that everything fried in it sears and crisps up to perfection. You can also use a seasoned cast iron skillet. 4. Absolutely no Matzo Meal as a binder. It turns the latkes into lead. In my family, my daughter Tia still remembers (and never lets me forget) when I made latkes in her first home and left my greasy finger and handprints all over her beautiful new kitchen. Ha!! The chef doesn’t clean up…the help does! To continue in that tradition, my wonderful, smart and beautiful granddaughter Sophie was my assistant. Good choice, since she continues the Malkin family tradition of loving to cook…from me to her mom to her.
+The recipe for latkes is simple. Make up a batch of potato latke + About 1 pound of russet or
ingredient s
Yukon Gold potatoes—you can grate and wring or cheat like me with Simply Potatoes + 1 ground large onion (8 ounces) + 2 large eggs + ½ cup all-purpose flour (I adjust this as needed to help bind the latke) + 2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt or 1 teaspoon fine sea salt + 1 teaspoon baking powder + ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper + Peanut or other vegetable oil, for frying
mix, heat up the pan and fry them three at a time, while keeping the latkes well separated. Drain them on brown paper bags or on a rack. You can then refrigerate them or even freeze them if you want to prepare them a few days in advance. +This recipe yields two to three dozen latkes, depending on the size of each latke. You can adjust the quantities according to your needs. + I then form each latke in advance, so they are lined up and ready to go when I start to fry. + Heat up the pan with at least a 1/4 inch of oil (sprinkle water to see if it sizzles), then fry them three to a pan about 5 minutes on each side until crispy and brown. + Dump old oil and add fresh oil throughout the process. + Serve with sour cream, apple sauce or a sprinkle of salt. Ess, ess mein kindt!

thousands of retailers across the country. In the beginning silver was definitely the driving force of sales, but gold has been trending for several years now, Jamie says. “Our prices range from $9 to $54, and our website has an extensive sale section with highly discounted prices.” They added clothing in 2019 with a line of inspirational, feel-good t-shirts printed in their warehouse. “We are strong believers in the power of words and like to incorporate that into our product whenever possible,” says Joanne, noting that 2022 will be their largest launch, with linen dresses, pants, shirts, jackets and shorts in six colors made in Italy. Joanne is passionate about their flagship boutique and loves hosting fundraisers for various organizations. “We donate 20% to 30% of the sales generated to the charity or school. We either host the group in our store or orders can be placed on our website as well,” she says, adding, “We are pleased to say we have partnered with a Los Angeles–based charity that houses and provides daycare to women and children who have suffered from abuse and need a safe place to live. We aid them financially as well as donating, clothing, jewelry and various accessories.” “To participate in supporting this worthwhile charity, if you shop our website and make a purchase using the code ‘CVL1010’, you will receive a 10% discount and we will donate 10% to the charity. If you prefer to shop in our store, located in the front of our warehouse in an industrial complex, just mention this article and you will receive the same discount and donation.” The code will be valid through 2021. Jamie wakes up grateful every day that she gets to work with her mom, which also means that her four children are a part of their grandma's daily life as well. GIVING BACK
Gratefully
GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
THEY NEED YOUR HELP FINDING THOSE RECIPIENTS. ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON
Last year’s giveaway campaign culminated in the distribution
PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES
of $250,000 throughout the year to recipients from across the country who had various needs. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community members such as judges, Anna Sarol
police officers, teachers, mentors, social workers and readers like you nominated community members who were facing hardships. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers and stakeholders were able to help identify people who might have otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Anna Sarol. About six years ago Anna was paralyzed in a gymnastics accident when she was a freshman in high school, but until last year she did not have a stairlift in her home. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000 and made sure it was installed. “Stairlifts don’t come at a feasible price, and unfortunately our insurance denied coverage,” Anna says. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my family and I are.” The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of the giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients. Among those recipients were single mothers, families with children who were facing illnesses, individuals impacted by the loss of a job, unexpected deaths and more.

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | December 2021
Another nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her two nephews and niece. The children came from an abusive situation involving violence, drugs, and neglect. Kathy, a single parent, worked tirelessly to provide for these children, but the family was still living in poverty despite her working seven days a week. Additionally, Kathy lost her housecleaning job during the pandemic and resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy.
“This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” CONTINUED >

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)
“When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors. They experienced Christmas like their peers, which filled them with such pride as it was something they have wished for all their lives.” The case manager says the lesson is clear – when we give back to others, we truly gain so much more in the process. She said she was filled with overwhelming joy when she saw the children’s faces filled with smiles and a Christmas tree in their home for the first time. In addition, the aunt’s expressed desire to give back to others made the giving cycle full circle. In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient. She was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children, let alone providing them with a fun Christmas. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which impacted her income as the students attended a nearby school after the building was hit. The whole town was struggling as 220 people were injured and five were killed because of the tornado, and everyone needed encouragement. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. The leaders of Lifestyle Publications believe God has blessed them, so they want to be a blessing and encouragement to others. With this year’s giveaway being increased to $300,000 to give away throughout the year, it’s clear this is an opportunity to change many lives in the same way Anna’s was changed. “As a 2020 recipient of the Christmas giveaway, I am forever grateful I now can access my basement independently,” Anna says. “Locating a fully accessible household in my area is nearly impossible, and living in a state that experiences tornado warnings means finding a way to get to my basement by myself is crucial. Not only this, but I also now have the option of utilizing another level of my house to hang out with friends and family.” *Names changed for privacy
