Letter from the Editor

Obviously, here at Cypress Lifestyle, we're obsessed with everything that is local! It’s our entire purpose every month to shine a light on the best and brightest of Cypress. This month, we compiled a list of things we love about Cypress! (and then had to narrow it down to just 15!) Let us know what you think should be added to the list!

In this issue, get to know Cypress' very own sister-duo Stella Rose and Jojo Regina. Jojo starred in Reese Witherspoon’s Where the Crawdads Sing and together they both loved starring in The Chosen . We enjoyed getting to know Stella, Jojo and their fabulous little sister, June Grace.

We are also excited for you to get to know Dr. Caitlin Wehrle, leading Welch Dental Group into Cypress. Already a staple in the community we are so happy to have her in Cypress!

We sat down with Juan Soto, owner of Soto’s Cantina and he shared a little about their rich history and the story behind their incomparable cuisine! Just take a look at the pictures of some of their mouthwatering dishes and you'll be hooked too. A local favorite, family-owned Soto’s Cantina has a great atmosphere inside and out (their patio dining is simply fabulous).

I say it often, but I'm so honored to share the stories of the people of Cypress! Cheers, Cypress!

Local Rising Stars Take the Screen

CYPRESS RESIDENTS JOJO REGINA AND STELLA ROSE SHARE THEIR LIFE AS YOUNG ACTORS

Jojo Regina in Where The Crawdads Sing
Stella Rose & Jojo Regina

Thirteen-year-old Jojo Regina and her sister, fifteen-year-old Stella Rose, have already made their mark on the big and small screen.

The two started acting in commercials at the ages of five and seven, but have since moved on to bigger opportunities – from The Chosen to Where The Crawdads Sing

In her first feature film, Jojo played the younger Kya in 2022’s Where the Crawdads Sing, an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Delia Owens that also starred Daisy Edgar-Jones and was produced by Reese Witherspoon.

Although she had to navigate Covid restrictions during filming, Jojo had plenty of memorable moments on set, including learning how to drive a boat through the Louisiana swamps at only 10 years old.

“I was actually in a swamp, and so it was just super pretty out there in Louisiana,” she said. “I got to learn how to drive a boat, which was also a lot of fun. That was the first time I got to do that. And I performed my first stunt.”

Jojo’s most recent movie role is Rachel Holliday in Festival of Trees that first aired in November. It is a heartwarming Christmas special also starring Kate Miner and Josie Davis.

She will also star in an upcoming drama called Spider and Jessie with Mckenna Grace and Jesse Williams, which is scheduled to premiere in the spring or summer of 2025.

“I love the experience of getting to go new places, playing with different characters, and being able to be whoever,” JoJo said.

As for Stella, she starred in the 2017 limited television series The Long Road Home as Mina Aguero and has been involved in several commercials, including for Lemi Shine and Essential Oils. She is currently working on auditions for different projects.

Both Stella and Jojo also starred together on the popular Christian television series The Chosen

“It was so pretty out there, and we did the scene with Jesus and all the kids were sitting around,” Stella said.

As growing actors, Jojo and Stella say they are inspired by performers like Reese Witherspoon and Millie Bobbie Brown. Jojo had the opportunity to meet Reese while working on the set of Where The Crawdads Sing

“Reese was super-duper sweet, and we did a lot of talking, and then we sang a song together, which was a lot of fun,” she said.

The sisters were first inspired to act after overhearing their dad, who is also an actor, doing an audition for a voiceover in his office.

“He let us come in to watch, and we thought it was so much fun,” Stella said.

Jojo and Stella started acting when they were five and seven years old, and their little sister, June Grace, does not seem far behind them at three years old.

“June is not quite there yet, but she's definitely a drama queen,” said Charlie, the girls’ father. “She might end up being a director because she's pretty bossy, but for now she enjoys following her sisters around and watching them.”

Besides acting, Stella and Jojo enjoy different creative and athletic hobbies. JoJo enjoys rock climbing, horseback riding, and making paper dragon puppets, while Stella likes to write, hang out with friends, and play basketball.

Growing up in Cypress, their favorite spots include Boba and frozen yogurt shops, the Towne Lake Boardwalk, and going out for sushi, especially after an audition or for a celebration.

When it comes to traveling for different auditions and acting opportunities, the two rising stars enjoy meeting new people wherever they go.

“The people are what make the trip awesome, because everybody's so sweet, and getting to work with them on set is awesome,” Stella said.

LOCAL MEXICAN RESTAURANT BLENDS AUTHENTICITY WITH TEX-MEX FLARE

BY

When Juan Soto moved to the U.S. from San Luis Potosí, Mexico, he and his brothers recognized the great demand for Mexican food in the Houston area.

“Most of the people who move into the area, they work in restaurants. We saw a potential there in opening our own,” said Juan Soto, owner of Soto’s Cantina.

Soto’s Cantina was originally located in Sugarland, opening back in 2001. The restaurant then reopened its doors in the Northwest Houston area in September 2011.

Photography by Erica Hernandez Media

After their reopening, Soto’s Cantina rose to success quickly. The restaurant was recognized by the Houston Chronicle as one of Houston’s top 100 restaurants within just a year.

Soto’s Cantina currently operates two locations: one on Grant Road and the other on West Little York Road, which features a private dining room. While his brothers have now moved on to separate ventures, Juan continues to run both restaurants.

“We’ve been here for almost 14 years, and we continue serving good food,” Juan said.

However, owning and operating a restaurant doesn’t come without its challenges.

The COVID-19 pandemic took a hit on local businesses and restaurants like Soto’s Cantina. On top of that, Soto’s Cantina suffered a kitchen fire two years ago, causing the restaurant to close its doors for a year. Through these ups and downs, their loyal customers didn’t leave their side.

“Luckily when we were able to come back, we still had all these followers. They were waiting for us to reopen,” Juan said. “I am really happy to be here and be able to take care of the community.”

Soto’s Cantina distinguishes itself from other Tex-Mex and Mexican restaurants in the area through one key element: freshness.

“We make everything daily. You can tell,” Juan said. “Our plates come back clean. People eat almost everything.”

Rather than making large batches of staple items like rice and salsa for the entire week, they are always made fresh daily.

Soto’s Cantina is also unique in their incorporation of authentic Mexican cuisine with Tex-Mex influence. Some of the techniques used at Soto’s Cantina are inherited from his mother’s cooking, but Juan also recognizes the importance of local Texas influence.

Photography by Erica Hernandez Media

“We do Tex-Mex, but we have been including authentic dishes in the menu,” Juan said.

The Soto brothers designed the menu to reflect their family’s rich culinary tradition.

Soto’s Cantina serves a variety of Mexican dishes, including burritos, tacos, fajitas, enchiladas, flautas, seafood and more. They also offer healthier options for customers to choose from, such as soups, salads and quinoa. You can then finish off your meal with a dessert: flan, sopapillas or tres leches.

Additionally, Soto’s Cantina offers brunch on Saturdays and Sundays — serving up omelettes, breakfast tacos, chilaquiles, molletes, pancakes and more alongside fresh squeezed orange and grapefruit juices.

Juan expressed his appreciation for the local Northwest Houston patrons that frequently dine at Soto’s Cantina.

“I'm really grateful that we have a large community who support us and continue giving us business,” Juan said.

Juan also encouraged new faces to come out and try Soto’s Cantina.

“We love our customers. We love our regulars,” Juan said. “We can’t wait for people who haven’t visited us to give us a shot and see what we do.”
