“EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION” AND TAYLOR MORRISON BUILD DREAM HOME FOR CYPRESS FAMILY
ARTICLE BY KAYLEE DUSANG | PHOTOGRAPHY BY THOMAS VALDEZ
Several Houstonians recently joined one of the most beloved home renovation television shows to give a Cypress family a new beginning.
For ABC’s reboot of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition , homebuilder Taylor Morrison, its local and national trade partners, and 2,000 Cypress-area volunteers came together to help a family in need by building a brand-new home from the ground up in under one week.
“Philanthropy runs through our veins as an organization, and the Houston team was incredibly inspired to bring the community together during the build process,” said Todd Rasmussen, Houston Division
President at Taylor Morrison. “Building dream homes is what we do every day at Taylor Morrison, so it's a natural fit for us to do just that for a local family as part of this iconic show.”
The teams assisted a family in the Mason Woods community that lost their home and one of their family members due to a devastating fire, shares Michael Heyerman, Executive Producer of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Senior Vice President of Unscripted Original Series, Endemol Shine North America. “They are a genuinely deserving family worthy of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition experience,” Heyerman said.
ATTENDEES READY TO YELL 'MOVE THAT BUS' TO REVEAL THE HOME TO THE FAMILY FOR THE FIRST TIME."
Originally featured on HGTV, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is recognized for its uplifting stories about remodeling the homes of families who have experienced hardships. For ABC’s version of the show, deserving families will receive a newly built home from Taylor Morrison that is tailored to the family’s individual needs.
“Taylor Morrison's fantastic reputation and willingness to step up and help families in their communities made them the perfect

partner for the show. They share a passion for the series and the incredible new talent we are showcasing,” Heyerman said.
Produced by media companies Endemol Shine North America and Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, the new season’s hosts, expert home organizers Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin of The Home Edit, meet with each family to help them transform their home and lifestyle. Rasmussen explains that Taylor Morrison got involved with the show through an existing partnership they have had with The Home Edit since 2023. The homebuilder and the home-organization company teamed up for the New Home, New Zones
video series, which helped buyers settle into their new homes by easing the stress that comes with moving – all while adding some fun and function into the process.
Taylor Morrison serves as the first-ever exclusive homebuilder for the series. Starting with a successful pilot episode in Hutto, Texas in September 2023, Taylor Morrison has also built several other homes for families. This includes two new homes in the Brookland Park community in Auburdale, Florida to support two local families, among others. “Most recently, Taylor Morrison is building a brand-new home in its La Mira community in Mesa, Arizona, for a local deserving family,”
Rasmussen said. “Add an approximately 2,000 square foot community center to the recently built community of homes in Gilbert, Arizona, where Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center patients and their care partners stay free of charge during their treatment.”
Heyerman shares what led the series to the Cypress area for its new season. “It's a beautiful part of the country and a wonderful place to live, but the ‘who’ is even more important than the ‘where,’” Heyerman said. “We found everything Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is about in the recipients of the Cypress build: a heroic family with heart, who dedicate their lives to improving the community and its people.” Although the show does not have any plans to film in other locations in the Houston area, Heyerman said they hope to return in the future. “We had a wonderful time here, and we’re so grateful for the community's support in giving a brand-new home to such an incredible family,” Heyerman said.
The Cypress episode will air during the 2024-2025 season of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition , premiering on ABC, and will be available for streaming the next day on Hulu.
“This unique experience has been enormously rewarding for everyone involved,” Rasmussen said. “It has been inspiring to see the entire community, from Taylor Morrison team members to trade partners, local businesses, and resident volunteers, come together for such a worthy cause and help a family within our own community. The teamwork, optimism, and positivity has been a true joy to be a part of.”
Local Non-profit Strives to Help Struggling Vets, First Responders and Their Families
ARTICLE BY MINNIE PAYNE & LAURA
As a marine and firefighter spanning over the last two decades, Guardian Grounds CEO Jason Corthell has had his own set of struggles with anxiety, addiction, and PTSD. “I kind of got tired of just talking about helping vets and first responders and I wanted to actually do something about it,” Jason recalls.
Every day, our first responders and military members are faced with scenes and situations that leave lasting marks on their lives. These unsung heroes who face the unimaginable to protect and serve the rest of us often carry silent burdens that go unnoticed.
“I feel most people know the struggle of veterans, but the general public is rarely aware that first responders often go through the same trials.”
Every day, our first responders and military members are faced with scenes and situations that leave lasting marks on their lives. These unsung heroes who face the unimaginable to protect and serve the rest of us often carry silent burdens that go unnoticed.
“Our ultimate goal is not only to have the ability to take our veterans, first responders, and their families on outings and outdoor adventures but to build a full-service wellness facility to address behavioral health deficits and offer addiction treatment,” Jason says. “There are none in the state of Texas that
are exclusively for both populations of veterans and first responders.”
The mission at Guardian Grounds is simple yet profound; to provide a sanctuary where healing begins and resilience is built. They’re striving to heal our everyday heroes through the power of nature and relationships. It’s a haven for the first responders and their families that is more than just a place to unwind. They’ve created a comprehensive sanctuary tailored to the unique needs of first responders and military personnel.
Guardian Grounds Ranch covers 12 acres with a 4,000-square-foot log cabin that houses up to 30 people. Located in Lindale, northwest of Tyler, the
cabin has six rooms, approximately 20’ x 20’, with a bath, shower/tub, toilet, and linen closet accommodating four to five people. “Our goal is to have participants stay free of charge, and we encourage them to use the cabin before it is needed,” says Jason. “We want people to use it for breaks and leisure. Often, only one family is using the cabin at a time.”
Guardian Grounds seeks to help heal veterans and first responders so they don’t become a part of the staggering statistics of more than 6,500 veterans and first responders who take their own lives every year.
“We are thankful to the many organizations who have been instrumental in our launching. Most of them have given us services and continue to do so free of charge,” Jason says. “To name a few, Beefy Marketing allows us to use their marketing platform and podcast studio. Sam Cannon allows us to rent our office space free of charge, and we are so thankful to Camp Comrade, who is our partnering agency specializing in veteran needs and care. We are also thankful to Shield Bearer and Carrera Counseling who have been 100% on board with us from day one and have contributed to the building of our nonprofit and its successes as well.”
to help heal veterans and first responders so they don’t become a part of the staggering statistics of more than 6,500 veterans and first responders who take their own lives every year.
Husband and father of three, Jason shares; “My wife Patty is the Vice President for Guardian Grounds, but she is the leader of the pack. She sacrifices so much to allow me to invest time into this cause. She has immediate family members who have served in the military and as first responders, so she knows all too well the difficulties both populations can face at times,” Jason says.
With many ways to give regularly via their website–including monthly and corporate sponsorships, and plenty of merch like coffee and t-shirts, there is a way for everyone who
wants to give. Jason also seeks out-of-the-box donations and ideas to meet the needs of the first responders and veterans as well. “We are looking for anyone willing to donate land. We would love to set up some local camping and RV sites,” Jason says.
Giving time, money, and donation of goods or services–all are more than welcome and are needed. “We don't turn down any help, as a newer non-profit we need all the help we can get.”
There are many ways to give back and support Guardian Grounds as they actively help the ones who help everyone else.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune disease. This means that it doesn’t go away. T1D can affect anyone at any age, though it usually is diagnosed in childhood or adolescence.
Founded in 1970 by families whose loved ones had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D), Breakthrough T1D (formerly Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) is a nonprofit organization. As the leading global type 1 diabetes research and advocacy organization, they’re helping make everyday life better while driving toward cures.
With T1D, the body’s immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Insulin is an essential hormone that helps the body turn food into energy. People living with type 1 diabetes must take insulin by injection or insulin pump to survive.
BREAKTHROUGH T1D’S YOUTH AMBASSADOR PROGRAM
Breakthrough T1D has 64 Houston-area Youth Ambassadors in the Houston area this year. Here in Cypress, we have seven inspirational youth ambassadors with Breakthrough T1D. Their job is to help increase T1D awareness in the community, volunteer for activities impacting Breakthrough T1D ’s mission, and raise funds to help achieve a world without Type 1 diabetes.
In addition to these responsibilities, Youth Ambassadors can socialize with other youth who live with T1D and have fun while making new friends and creating memories along the way. The program’s ultimate goal is that Youth Ambassadors will make a tangible impact in advancing the mission work of Breakthrough T1D.
Ambassador Program Aims to Increase Awareness and Advocate for Research for a Cure
The ambassador program is incredibly important and gives the youth a chance to use their voice to break misconceptions, advocate for better technology to make their lives easier, and fight for a cure. These children are truly inspirational, finding strength in sharing their stories and educating those around them.
The Cypress Youth Ambassadors are inspirational and wise beyond their years. We asked them what they wished people knew about life with Type 1 Diabetes.
“We aren’t like other kids, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do stuff like other kids.” Marie Cerny, 5th Grade, Sampson Elementary
“Diabetes has its ups and downs, but what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” Ruth Cerny, 6th Grade, Spillane Elementary
“Diabetes is always work, even when you don’t feel like dealing with it. I have a great life and do everything that I want because I keep putting in the work.” Landon Yates, 8th Grade, Hamilton Middle School
“I wish people knew all the time and effort that goes into managing it. There are no breaks from diabetes." Reagan Josefy, 10th Grade, Cy-Ranch
“I want people to know that Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes are not the same. My pancreas doesn’t produce the insulin I need, and I can’t change that by eating differently or exercising more.” Sophia Heschel, 5th Grade, Postma Elementary
“I wish people understood that people with Type 1 can eat anything they want, but they have to take insulin for everything they eat. I also wish they understood that if I dosed myself for something I am eating, it is difficult for me if they ask if they can have some.” Lillian McGinn, 6th Grade, Cypress Homeschool Association
Many kids feel misunderstood, and isolated, and sometimes are even reprimanded for what is simply necessary medical care. Teachers and classmates might not see what it takes just to stay safe and healthy during a typical school day.
Despite how brutal and difficult living with type 1 diabetes can be, getting involved in advocacy and volunteer work provides these kids with a sense of purpose and meaning. It turns a challenging situation into one where they can make a difference. It’s also a community and a support system for the kids and their families.
Living with T1D is extra work, but with the right support and information, one can lead a fulfilling, active life.

SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND WHAT LED YOU INTO YOUR FIELD OF PRACTICE.
For 23 years, I worked in Houston’s Commercial Electrical Industry as an estimator and Project Manager. This season was marked by the typical highs and lows of the industry, encompassing both professional relationships and fluctuating income. Over the years, I found myself increasingly turning to alcohol, which eventually began to impact my life significantly.
In 2021, I made several life-changing decisions: I removed myself from a toxic work environment, addressed my alcohol issues, and shifted my career path toward something that resonated more with my true self. My entire life, people have described me as empathetic, caring, and compassionate—qualities that I realized were not being utilized in my previous career.
Through my own healing process, I discovered my real calling was to help others. This was a profound realization that not only allowed me to connect more deeply with my true self but also to transition into a career that aligns with my potential, and my core values.
discovered my real calling was to help others.
WHAT DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN?
I specialize in two primary treatment modalities: LENS Neurofeedback and Integrative Health using Functional Medicine, trained under Dr. Stephen Cabral. Both approaches are grounded in the principle of healing from the root of one's concerns, addressing the underlying causes rather than just symptoms.
LENS Neurofeedback is a unique neurotherapy that improves brain function by modifying brainwave activity. This method involves measuring the brain's electrical activity via sensors placed on the scalp and then providing slight feedback signals that promote self-regulation and neuroplasticity.
Integrative Health Practitioner
Training under Dr. Stephen Cabral
This approach involves a thorough assessment of various factors, including genetics, lifestyle, and environmental influences. Treatments are personalized and often include changes in nutrition, lifestyle adjustments, and targeted supplementation.
Nutritional Deficiencies: Research has shown that deficiencies in certain nutrients—such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins B and D, and minerals like zinc and magnesium—can lead to symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Gut Health: The gut-brain axis is a fundamental concept in both Functional Medicine and mental health. An imbalanced gut
microbiome can contribute to a host of mental health issues, including anxiety and depression.
Hormonal Imbalances: Hormones play a crucial role in regulating mood and emotions. Dysregulation in the endocrine system, such as thyroid dysfunction or adrenal fatigue, can manifest as mental health problems.
Inflammation: Chronic inflammation has been linked to several mental health conditions, including depression.
In Functional Medicine, the approach to mental health is rooted in the concept that the body and mind are intrinsically connected, and disturbances in one can affect the other.
WHAT SETS SERENITY WELLNESS & COUNSELING CENTER APART FROM OTHERS?
Serenity Wellness & Counseling Center stands out due to its holistic approach to healing. Unlike practices that may primarily focus on symptom management, we delve deeper into understanding and treating the underlying issues that contribute to mental, physical, and spiritual distress.
Additional Services: Recognizing that some clients may benefit from medication as part of their treatment plan, we also offer medication management services. This ensures that clients receive comprehensive care that includes pharmacological support when
necessary, administered with careful consideration of their overall treatment goals.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS KEY IN THE HEALING JOURNEY?
Living authentically and embracing my true self has been pivotal not only in my personal healing journey but also in how I approach my practice. By integrating the knowledge and techniques I've learned for healing both the mind and body, I'm able to bring a genuine, holistic perspective to each session.
This authenticity fosters an environment of trust and deep connection, allowing clients to feel an immediate resonance with the process. Clients often report feeling a real and instant connection that not only inspires but also accelerates their own healing processes. This powerful dynamic is reflective of the healing that occurs when one is seen and supported in their entirety, validating the importance of authenticity in facilitating profound and lasting change.
My unexpected healing journey has profoundly shaped my current path. Together with my wife, I am proud to support our clients in their mental and physical healing processes empowering them to lead healthier and more fulfilled lives.
