H

appy New Year from Del Mar Lifestyle!

F.A. Newton | Alex.Newton@LifestylePubs.com contributing writers

Can you believe another year has flown by so quickly? In as much as a blink we are welcoming 2016 to our lives. As we ring in 2016, Del Mar Lifestyle wishes you and yours a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. There is much to see and do here in Del Mar for the New Year and we hope to see you at L'Auberge as we count down to midnight! For me, I love the prospect of having new beginnings and new ventures to pursue. The New Year always calls to mind champagne toasts, midnight kisses and countdowns to new beginnings. This year is no exception with wonderful parties and casual get togethers going on all around North County. My fondest memories of New Year's as a young child include drinking sparkling cider and toasting with my parents, family and friends at midnight. Living on the East Coast, the evenings were always brisk and chilly in January and we would bundle up from our heads down to our toes. We would wish and pray for snow to make the chill worthwhile. If we could at least play, build snowmen and sled swiftly downhill then we could bear the bone chilling cold. Living in Del Mar, New Year's now holds a different meaning for me, and I tend to feel a chill when the weather dips below 60 degrees. There is so much to celebrate and to be thankful for as we ring in the new year and I truly hope this issue of Del Mar Lifestyle brings joy, laughter and new beginnings to your home as you enjoy Del Mar art, food, relaxation and business leaders in our January Edition. From all of us at Del Mar Lifestyle, we wish you a beautiful and prosperous 2016.

“Plastic surgery has always been a growing industry,” he says. “Even in a slower economy, people want to invest in the beauty industry and their looks. hen Matt Montgomery was a 22-year-old college student, his life took an unexpected and tragic turn: he was struck by an SUV driven by a fleeing shoplifter in a parking lot. Once a competitive swimmer with Olympic aspirations, Montgomery landed in the hospital with serious injuries. “I spent a good ten years really in constant pain,” he says. “Somewhere along the line, my spine ruptured, possibly as a result of the old injuries, but probably largely in part due to the fact that I was working at a desk job and spending entirely too much time sitting. After ten years of pain pills, three knee surgeries and a back surgery, I just hurt every second of every day. One day out of desperation I got a massage. It was the first thing that ever helped. A week later I was in massage school, and eight months later I had my body back.” Montgomery is now a certified massage therapist and the proud owner of Samata Spa. Samata means "balance" in Sanskrit. While many view massage as a luxury, Montgomery says it has incredible powers to heal the body. When he began his career as a massage therapist, a client who had been severely injured in a car accident and had not had success with physical 16

Del Mar Lifestyle | January 2016

therapy came to him about a week after her first massage with tears in her eyes. “She was like, ‘Matt, I have been in pain every day for twelve years. And I got four days without any pain, and I never thought I would have that again,’” he says. Therapist Sarah Melody works with Montgomery; he has nicknamed her “Sarah-mazing.” Melody makes all spa enhancements in-house, such as lotions made from Shea butter, coco butter and coconut oil that can be mixed with essential oils specific to the client’s preferences and needs. “She really knows her stuff,” says Montgomery. “She’s got quite a bit of training and 10 years of experience. We would definitely not be in business if it were not for her.” Samata Spa is unique in that it has a strong emphasis on reflexology, which utilizes pressure points on the feet, hands, and head that correspond to different areas of the body. Along with standard offerings such as deep tissue and Swedish massage, Samata also offers unique options such as the chakra drop and Jin Shin Do massages, plus Craniosacral therapy and myofascial release. The chakra drop is based on raindrop therapy and involves essen-

tial oils dropped along the spine to facilitate the flow of energy throughout the body. “It’s actually one of my favorite treatments to give,” says Montgomery. “It leaves me very peaceful.” Being able to heal others the way he was once healed is Montgomery's way of coming full circle. “That’s the main reason why I do what I do,” he says. “Because a lot of people feel just resigned to misery. There’s nothing they can do about it. They’re sort of like a helpless bystander to their own healing process, because that’s the way our medical system works. If I can help empower them to take ownership over their body, there’s really a lot that they can do to reclaim a really good quality of life. No one has to be stuck.” For more information, visit SamataSpa.com. Matt Montgomery and Sarah Melody

Woman-owned Business of the Year

ARTICLE ALLY BACAJ | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

I

n 1998 Judy Wells suddenly found herself a single mother to six children. Her husband had passed away, leaving her as the sole head of the family. In the face of devastating loss, Wells was left to pick up the pieces of her old life and start a new business to support her family. Wells and her husband had run flooring businesses together for more than 20 years, but her husband had long taken the entrepreneurial role in their partnership, and, for better or for worse, she now had to make a fresh start on her own. Her daughter, Lisa Wells, can’t hide her admiration and pride as she tells the story of how her mother quickly “had to figure out how to run things, make decisions and become a tough businesswoman.” Wells launched her new business, Geneva Flooring, in 1999. Geneva Flooring is a full-service flooring business in San Diego county that provides a wide variety of high-quality and eco-friendly flooring options, from hardwood to cork to carpeting. Wells' brother helped her out for the first year, until she could run the business on her own. Meanwhile, her daughter was finishing up high school and helping out around the store here and there behind the scenes. After Lisa graduated from high school, she started working towards her bachelor’s degree and later, her master’s. She was also working two demanding and low-pay-

18

Del Mar Lifestyle | January 2016

ing waitressing jobs, but they just weren’t working out. Wells suggested her daughter learn sales and in 2001, Lisa began working at Geneva Flooring. While she wasn’t necessarily planning to take over the family business at the time, she soon found that she loved her job, and she’s been an integral partner in the business ever since. “It was a way to support Lisa while she was getting her education, but also, she was support for me," says Wells. "To have somebody here who understood and had been through what I’d been through...we just got it.” “Working with her gave me the support I needed to get through school, and it allowed me the flexibility of traveling the world and doing everything I needed to do to get through my master’s program,” says Lisa. In her prior work experiences, she had found employers were an obstacle to her academic success, but having her mother as an employer turned out to provide exactly the amount of flexibility, generosity and empathy she needed. Lisa says that having a great business partner who was supportive

“IT WAS A WAY TO SUPPORT LISA WHILE SHE WAS GETTING HER EDUCATION, BUT ALSO, SHE WAS SUPPORT FOR ME,” SAYS WELLS.“TO HAVE SOMEBODY HERE WHO UNDERSTOOD AND HAD BEEN THROUGH WHAT I’D BEEN THROUGH...WE JUST GOT IT.”

of her education and wanted her to succeed made a world of difference. It made her excited about running the business, participating in the ownership of the business and having control of her own destiny. “We discovered more than a decade ago that we really are like soul sisters," says Lisa. "We get along and get each other so well. It was never hard for us to work together, ever.” Both women take an enormous amount of pride in running a woman-owned business. They are a rarity in the typically male-dominated flooring industry. "Many women work in flooring stores," says Wells, "but it’s rare to have a woman own a flooring store.” Even so, they see their gender as an asset and a component of their success. “We’ve found over the years that men prefer working with women, and women prefer working with women. Everyone enjoys working with women; it seems to be less intimidating and more low-pressure.

Often women are perceived to be better at decorating, so a lot of single men who are decorating their own homes are concerned about making good choices and want a woman’s opinion,” says Wells. Wells is involved with the San Diego chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), and she and Lisa are board members of the San Diego Floor Covering Association, where they’ve held women-only gatherings for women in the f looring industry. "It’s hard in any male-dominated industry to get any support, so that’s been one of the ways we’ve enjoyed supporting and encouraging other women in the flooring business,” says Wells. With the San Diego Floor Covering Association, they also raise funds for charities such as Rady Children’s Hospital and Susan B. Komen’s Race for the Cure, and contribute extra flooring materials to Habitat for Humanity. "Beyond our industry, and beyond our business, we are a very fierce group of women,” says Lisa.

GRACEDBYGRIT CELEBRATING THE HERO IN EVERY WOMAN ARTICLE ANN E. BUTENAS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

S

omeone once told me that if I still look cute at the end of my workout, then that is evidence I didn’t work hard enough. Evidently, that certain someone has never heard

of GRACEDBYGRIT, a women-owned local business that designs and manufactures premium women’s athletic apparel. If you enjoy working out, you typically have a two-fold reason for doing so: feeling good and looking good. Isn’t it time to have workout wear that performs and gives as much as you do to the workout? No matter how hard you sweat, GRACEDBYGRIT will keep you looking your best while simultaneously performing its best. Conceived by fitness and fashion-minded entrepreneurs and business developers Kimberly Caccavo and Kate Nowlan, GRACEDBYGRIT, which opened its doors in Solana Beach in May of 2015, has positioned itself as the go-to retailer for high performance, flattering workout wear for women that can withstand the most rigorous of challenges from all types of athletic endeavors, especially running and water sports, to life’s daily grind. The exceptional products offered by GRACEDBYGRIT harmoniously combine women’s athletic apparel that works at an exceptional level while providing slimming, unique and attractive designs. Not only are Caccavo and Nowlan's designs flattering to any figure and feminine in cut, the technical fabrics imported from Italy are uniquely selected for production in the US while ensuring that comfort and luxury are never compromised. “Our clothes are highly technical, offer a better experience and look good on you,” says Nowlan, also noting that the clothes are made in the USA from high performance compression fabric with a UPF rating of 50+ and each item comes complete with a safety whistle. The list of available products includes tanks, long-sleeved tops, capris, running shorts, booty shorts, fleece-lined leggings, jackets, headbands, socks, knickers, gloves and hats. They can easily transition from water to land, drying quickly like a bathing suit so you can go from the yoga mat or swimming class to the grocery store looking and feeling your best. CONTINUED >

an feel like a woman.” Caccavo and Nowlan are always excited when they see women wearing their products, and have encountered satisfied customers from New York’s Central Park to the California coastline. The common theme expressed by GRACEDBYGRIT is not just fashionable and durable, high performance clothing and athletic wear, but also pieces that tell a story and capture the heart. The way clothes perform have an impact on how you look and feel, and when you are going through challenging times, sometimes what you wear can help minimize the negative impact and really improve your overall outlook. That is where the grit part comes into play. While these clothes embrace the physical body, the stories in which they play a part embrace the heart. “Every woman has a gritty moment that could make or break her,” says Caccavo. “It is how we make it through those moments that define us. That grit is what gives us grace. We love it when people tell us what a certain piece means to them. Our clothes work just as hard as the people who wear them.” In addition to their retail store, products are available through the company's web site and a few specialty retailers. The company also offers an Influencer Program that invites those individuals involved in their communities who appreciate fitness and who are enthusiastic about the GRACEDBYGRIT brand. For their involvement with the company, influencers will receive certain discounts and benefits. Another way to enjoy this performance attire is to host a trunk show. All you have to do is invite friends and family for an afternoon or evening of food, drinks and fun. The philosophy behind GRACEDBYGRIT is simple yet profound. While it’s important for entrepreneurs to keep a careful eye on the bottom line of their business, the return on investment for Caccavo and Nowlan cannot be measured quantitatively. When you wear GRACEDBYGRIT, they hope you will be inspired to feel confident, motivated to be active and perform better than ever. “We understand what it takes to be a woman,” says Caccavo. “We celebrate the strength behind every woman’s story.” For more information on GRACEDBYGRIT, visit them at 153 N. Hwy 101, Ste. 103 in Solana Beach; call them at 877.964.7481 or 858.436.7247; or go online at GracedByGrit.com.

While I enjoyed my meal I alternated between watching the seabirds wheel over the waters and observing owners Amanda and Nico Caniglia hard at work, moving about the midday crowd with the seeming effortlessness born of deep competence. Nico and Amanda met more than a decade ago at one of the original Wine Steals in Hillcrest, and a deep appreciation for wine has been a current in their relationship ever since. Even as the pair dreamed of opening their own wine bar, the two stayed extremely active as world travelers and international businesspeople. Amanda

managing top San Diego restaurants (Buon Appetito, Arrivederci) and Bay Area Italian restaurants before starting his own cafe. Being a husband and wife team of restaurateurs (in addition to raising a six year old son) isn’t easy, but the couple says they manage by each focusing on their strengths. "Nico is brilliant at the operations and being able to crank fantastic food out of the world's smallest kitchen," says Amanda. "No joke, I bet your kitchen at home is bigger. I focus on the front of the house, marketing, networking, pulling in repeat customers and events. Nico prefers to stay behind the scenes but don’t be fooled, he's quite the charmer when working the cafe floor."

The most important things Nico and Amanda wanted bring to their cafe was true European and international flair. They wanted customers to feel transported and experience the best of what the couple themselves had experienced at their favorite restaurants across the globe, be it the amazing service of Bali, the bright smiles of Mexico, the high quality wait-staff of Italy or the presentation of France or Japan. They also wanted to incorporate the Spanish comfort of responsibly incorporating wine into lunch. Managing all this, plus catering and other special events in a single restaurant--with a notoriously small kitchen--is a tall order, but one that Bella Vista manages to serve up right on time. In addition to serving up delicious food and wine for hungry tourists, scientists and others, Bella Vista Social Club also features live music Thursday and Friday evenings and a daily happy hour. leisurely Sunday afternoon stroll in the Solana Beach Cedros Avenue Design District through the farmers market, specialty shops and bistros and olive oil and wine tastings leads to a blank canvas resting on an easel. It will be a mesmerizing hour or so before that canvas comes to life with the easygoing brush strokes of Wade Koniakowsky. The Ocean Art Gallery displays a selection of Koniakowsky’s work from original canvas oil paintings and giclees to his signature Polynesian surf board art. Impressionist paintings of ocean inspired themes, the rich colors of his oil paintings of ocean waves and coastal scenes take you somewhere and make you feel something. His imageries reflect the familiar coastal landmarks and surf spots from local Blacks Beach, La Jolla Cove, Luscomb’s Point and the Oceanside Pier to the tropical, dreamlike Hawaiian beaches. Koniakowsky is committed to and passionate about his art. He began painting at the young age of six. He humbly shares that he has “always been creative and has had something rolling around his brain; a gift.” A surfer before he was 12, he crafted and designed his own boards accentuated with his own artistic elements. It was only natural that his art would pay homage to the surf culture. As he mixes small amounts of colors on his palate to find his desired shade of blue for the sky, Koniakowky shares what motivates him: beauty, Polynesian culture, being a surfer, and an appreciation for the ocean culture, to name a few. “I love to create. I love to paint!” he says. The international acclaim Koniakowsky has garnered for his ocean-influenced artwork is best illustrated by his numerous accomplishments. His art is showcased in galleries from Hawaii to the East Coast. He has been highlighted in countless publications. He has been a featured artist in collaborations with ROXY, Tommy Bahama, Cobian with Bethany Hamilton and countless surf competitions. His signature paintings hang in Billabong stores nationwide, Duke’s restaurants and in the homes of many private collectors. Prior to opening his gallery and dedicating himself to his craft, he worked in advertising as a creative director. In the span of his 25 year career he successfully spearheaded national campaigns for Fortune 500 brands and earned countless awards. The vibrant oils that adorn the walls at his gallery make for the perfect, dreamlike escape. Soulful renditions of a favorite San Diego Beach or custom one-of-a-kind surfboards can be commissioned.

WOMEN'S POWER HOUR

G

iving a voice to local entrepreneurs and business professionals is the mission of Real Talk San Diego, a local radio show that airs weekdays on ESPN 1700AM. Guests check their elevator pitch at the door and are encouraged to share their unique story during one of 15 hour-long shows. In addition to educating listeners in their area of expertise, guests are often paired with other professionals who offer their perspective on topics relevant to business in San Diego. One of the more popular shows is The Women's Power Hour which airs every other Friday and features women only on-air. The show is hosted by Lindsay Chilson, Real Talk San Diego producer, and was created to uplift and inspire women both personally and professionally. “Almost all of our shows are hosted by men,” says Chilson. “I wanted to give a voice to the amazing local business women who are positively impacting our community.” Despite the fact that her other show is gender neutral, Chilson giggles when she refers to the The Women's Power Hour as the "no men zone." “There’s just something different when it’s only women. It allows me to create a fun, safe environment that empowers my guests to truly express themselves.” But make no mistake, this isn’t the radio version of The View. Although it is produced by and for women, it is first and foremost a show about business. Chilson’s guests freely share their stories, opinions and advice on what it takes to become a successful professional woman. Topics on any given show might include the struggles of entrepreneurship or climbing the corporate ladder to defining appropriate attire or how to effectively “hang with the men” in a male dominant business world. “I love doing a show that features successful women,” says Chilson. “We can let loose and get real on-air while maintaining our professionalism. We are all playing the same game and overcoming the same challenges. I get to hear empowering stories from all my guests and I am truly inspired by these amazing ladies. I feel like I have teammates not only in business, but in life.” Like most professional women who battle stereotypes and overcome long odds in the business world, Chilson has had her share of challenges.

“I don't have a degree so I’ve had start at the bottom of every company where I’ve worked. I’ve dealt with the stereotypes and the inappropriate advances, so it’s always been important for me to prove that I don’t need to rely on my looks to advance my career. For me, it’s about two things: perseverance and performance.” Chilson is bubbly, outgoing and unapologetically herself. A self-described PG version of Amy Schumer or Chelsea Handler, she has an uncanny ability to make her guests feel comfortable and provides them with a fun and unforgettable radio experience. Both men and women alike can take something beneficial away from The Women's Power Hour. If you know a local entrepreneur or business leader whose story should be featured on the show, please visit RealTalkSanDiego. com/guests and complete the interest form or send Lindsay Chilson a message on Facebook.com/RealTalkSanDiego.

Parting Thoughts

The Past is Present WORDS MICHAEL VAN OSCH

H

ere we go--2016, another new year. As good little citizens of this fast-paced world, we begin immediately to look forward. We set resolutions, new goals for the year, run the numbers to see where we might be able to get to this year. Hey, there’s nothing wrong with that; as humans our minds are built for moving forward. That’s probably why we’ve survived this long. But just for a minute, just for kicks, perhaps we should stop and look back over the last year before we fall too far into the grind of 2016. Why? Because as the ever-famous Ferris Bueller once said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” We all know this is true but the beginning of the year is quite possibly the only time we remember it and can truly give it a try. Regardless of who you are, I’m sure a lot of things happened in your life in 2015. Possibly some amazing things, some cool things, some expected and some unexpected things. And perhaps some not so nice or even very sad things. It’s all of these happenings and events 34

Del Mar Lifestyle | January 2016

that together make up the year that was. And what’s easy to forget is, this is what our lives are. All of those moments that make up a year. By not at least taking the time to acknowledge these moments and be thankful we’re still here to see another day, we can actually miss out on this gift we’ve been given. Let’s face it: when life is happening, we rarely seem to slow down enough to mull it over, really take it in and enjoy the moments. I have to believe that life is not meant to be a 365-day blur. So yeah, while planning for the New Year and mustering our energy to break new ground and reach new heights is part of it, it’s only half the story. The other half is to look back and relish what we’ve already done, see how far we’ve come, notice how we’ve coped and realize we’re standing on the broad shoulders of another year’s experience. Now before the blur of 2016 sets in--and it will--take a personal moment or two to relive some of 2015. The good, the bad, and the ugly all adds up to form your life. And really, it’d be a shame to miss it. Cheers.

“Real Talk San Diego... Your New Business Matchmaker”

Real Talk San Diego Airing weekdays on ESPN 1700AM, Real Talk San Diego is designed to give a voice to local entrepreneurs and business professionals who positively impact communities throughout our region. The various radio shows encompass 16 hours of local programming hosted by various leaders across a number of industries. Although the original intent of the show was to educate the listening audience about local business resources, it has evolved into something more. “We discovered that ourhosts, cohosts and guests were forming professional relationships with one another,” said Executive Producer Brett Ward. “It’s like Real Talk has become a businessmatchmaking service.” Perhaps the best example of this is Solana Beach resident Ryan White, Realtor with the Guiltinan Group, and his cohost Karen Kaseno, Forensic Accountant and founder of The Kaseno CPA Firm. “When I was introduced to Karen and found out what she did fora living, I asked to interview her on my show,” said White. “She provides an amazing service to people in need and I wanted others to know about it.” “Our experience on the show together presented us with opportunities to promote andsupport each other’s businesses,” continued White. “She and I have been able to refer a ton of business back and forth, and Real Talk has allowed us to quickly expand intointo each other’s professional networks.”

After several guest appearances, White asked Kaseno if she’d like to cohost his show. “It was a nobrainer for me,” says Kaseno “He’s a super smart guy. He pays attention to details more than others in his profession. I know my clients are in good hands when I send them to Ryan.” White has been in real estate for 14 years and manages over 100 vacation rentals in the San Diego area, so it’s safe to call him an “expert.” Although he buys and sells properties all over the county, White’s “home turf” is really Solana Beach and Del Mar. “I prefer to focus on my backyard because it’s what I know best, and that knowledge is transferred to my clients and business partners like Karen.” Kaseno has been a forensic accountant for more than two decades and is widely respected in her profession. “I always thought radio was just about appealing to the listeners. I never considered the networking and business building aspects of cohosting a radio show. It’s given me the opportunity to build a group of elite contacts,” said Kaseno. Real Talk San Diego gives a genuine voice to local business leaders who might not otherwise have an opportunity to showcase their business and tell their story.

If you know a local entrepreneur or business leader whose story should be featured, visit ReaTalkSanDiego.com/guests and complete the interest form.
