Now, 33 years later, she has managed to turn her tragedy into strength and inspiration for others battling the disease, through the Breast Cancer Survivors’ Network (BCSN). The journey to founding Georgia’s largest breast cancer support group system didn’t happen overnight. As Beebe lay in the hospital years ago receiving treatment, she received a visit that would help shape her life’s work. Vicki Castleberry, founder of breast cancer support organization Bosom Buddies, paid Beebe a visit. Castleberry offered words of encouragement and convinced Beebe that her story would impact others. A couple of months after she finished treatment, Beebe became a staple at Bosom Buddies. “Vicki included me in all her decision making about her organization and training people,” Beebe notes. “I became her right hand.” Beebe was so inspired by Bosom Buddies that she extended her volunteer efforts to the American Cancer Society and other organizations. “I really got high off of helping other people,” Beebe says. “It’s just something I had to do. My energy was helping others.” That energy catapulted Beebe to the forefront of efforts to support breast cancer survivors in Georgia. As Castleberry advanced in age, she decided it was time to step down from Bosom Buddies. The entity’s absence would leave a hole in the lives of its volunteers and, more importantly, in the lives of the men and women needing its support. Beebe couldn’t let that happen. “I thought, 'It’s time to start something myself,'” she says. Beebe notes she founded BCSN with Castleberry’s blessings. In fact, Castleberry serves as one of Beebe’s volunteers. BCSN is now in its 10th year of helping breast cancer survivors. It offers an abundance of services, including support groups, health fairs, counseling, mammogram assistance and transportation help. It also operates Hope Closet, which offers free products patients need after breast cancer surgery. And BCSN continually strives to reach the community

On October 8, BCS N will host its Seventh Annual Breast Cancer One -Day 2016 Wal k/ Run at Shakerag Knoll in Peac htre e City. “One of the highlights of the walk is the Survivors’ Ceremony. Out of 500 people that atten d, about 100 survivors are walking,” says Beebe. “We celebrate our lives that day.” Beebe is passionate about breast cancer patients viewing themselves as victors, not victims. “Did you not draw another breath after you were told you had breast cancer? You’re a surv ivor then. I stress to patients, to surv ive breast cancer, you have to fight it.” Breast Cancer Surv ivors’ Net work is more than an orga nization to Beebe; it’s her life’s work , and her mission. Despite receiving numerou s awa rds and accolades, it’s Beebe’s fervency that keep s her going strong, with no plans to stop. “This is my fun job,” she says.

“I stress to patients, to survive breast cancer, you have to fight it.”
