Going Green DO YOU HEAR THAT? It’s the sound of nature springing to life after a long winter’s nap. Birds are chirping, flowers are blooming and children are playing outside as the weather gets warmer and the days grow longer. This month at Frisco Life, we bring you our Eco issue in honor of Earth Day on April 22. Inspired by the infinite beauty of the earth—and our desire to preserve and protect it—we compiled an array of eco-conscious and eco-friendly people and places making a difference right here in Frisco. From eco-minded artists and businesses, this issue is a celebration of all things Mother Nature. Throughout this issue, you’ll find simple ways to be more eco-friendly, from walking or cycling instead of driving to buying eco-conscious clothing and accessories. Whether or not you have a green thumb, we hope the stories in these pages invoke feelings of gratitude for the wonderful world we live in—and the wonderful people in our community who strive to sustain it. HIGHLAND PARK VILLAGE IS A JEWEL BOX OF A DESTINATION NESTLED IN THE HEART OF DALLAS. Built in 1931 with unique Mediterranean Spanish-style architecture, it is the first shopping center of its kind in America. It served as a prototype for other shopping centers across the nation. The high-end retail destination was declared a National Historical Landmark nearly 20 years ago. Head over to Mockingbird Lane and Preston Road, park your car and take a stroll around the designer shops and upscale eateries. It's
+
like taking a step back in time but in the most elegant way possible.
STOP 1: Make the First Meal of the Day Count Start the day off with brunch. Stop by Bistro 31, owned by renowned restaurateur Alberto Lombardi. Enjoy a fluffy omelet or lemon ricotta pancakes with one of Bistro 31's signature cocktails. The menu changes with the seasons and has French, Italian and Spanish influences set in an elegant Europeanstyle atmosphere. It's the perfect spot for couples or an outing with your girlfriends. If your little ones are tagging along with you, make sure to satisfy their sweet tooth at Bird Bakery. Owned by Elizabeth Chambers, wife of actor Armie Hammer, this charming spot offers artisan sandwiches and freshly baked sweets. The only other location is in San Antonio. Treat yourself to a cupcake made with the
+
finest ingredients, including Plugra butter, Valrhona cocoa and Madagascar bourbon vanilla. STOP 2: Time to Shop There's no shortage of places to find high-quality apparel in Highland Park Village. Find your inner Texan at bespoke cowboy boot company Miron Crosby, owned by two Texas-raised sisters. You can find these boots in the pages of Town & Country or worn by top models Gigi Hadid and Hilary Rhoda. A diverse addition of retailers has been added in recent years, including Veronica Beard; Rag & Bone; and Frame, one of contemporary fashion’s hottest brands. If your taste is more luxurious and you're looking to splurge, there's an abundance of prestigious fashion and design houses like Chanel, Cartier, Valentino, Dior and Ermenegildo Zegna, just to name a few. If you're in the mood to window shop, the village is one of the best places to do it. The shopping center was developed to serve as a Town Square for Highland Park. The architecture, with its central fountain, tree-lined sidewalks and brick paths and
+
walkways, makes you want to take a stroll. It makes you feel like a part of the community. STOP 3: Dinner and Drinks If you’ve built up an appetite after all that shopping or window shopping, re-energize with dinner at one of Highland Park Village's upscale restaurants. For a romantic dinner for two, snag a reservation at these classic restaurants with a cult following: Italian-inspired Fachini, owned by renowned chef Julian Barsotti; or Highland Park Village’s time-treasured staple for more than 30 years, Cafe Pacific. Pop into Lounge 31, tucked away above Bistro 31, for a cocktail before or after dinner. Enjoy a drink in its enchanting atmosphere, complete with a bright patio and terrace
+
villa. It will make you feel like you flew to Spain just for a cocktail or glass of wine. STOP 4: After Dinner Is the Show Catch a movie for date night or family night at the iconic Village Theatre. The landmark theater opened in 1935 and is dripping with a rich history. It was the first luxury suburban theatre built in Texas and has been a popular entertainment spot ever since. It offers four screens, a lounge, a full bar and private screening rooms. Even better, you can get a free adult ticket with the purchase of another adult ticket on the first Friday of every month. The rich historical legacy of Highland Park Village should be enough to draw you in. Its luxurious retailers and charming dining destinations will make you want to come back for more. CONTINUED >

THE STAR IN FRISCO For any football fan looking for a day's worth of activities without a car, look no further than Frisco. Any Cowboys fan is sure to feel at home at the Star. The 91-acre campus hosts the Ford Center, the Cowboys' indoor practice field. It also hosts Frisco ISD football teams. If that doesn't excite you enough, the campus also boasts the Dallas Cowboys World Headquarters. The Star District is also the perfect place to shop, dine and experience everything Cowboys. As Cowboys
+ +
owner Jerry Jones has said, the Star offers almost every service Cowboys fans could ever want. STOP 1: Dallas Cowboys Headquarters Take a tour of the Ford Center, a state-of-the-art indoor athletic facility shared by the Dallas Cowboys, the City of Frisco and Frisco ISD’s high schools. The exterior video board is the largest in high school sports. The facility boasts one indoor and two outdoor practice fields. STOP 2: Shopping at the Star At the Star, football and shopping pair up perfectly. Get a pair of Cowboys-inspired boots at Texas-based Lucchese at the Star. Pick out a piece from the Charlotte Jones Collection, named after the executive vice president and chief brand officer for the Cowboys. Shop for the latest gym apparel at Nike at the Star, a first-of-its-kind retail collaboration between the Cowboys and Nike. Or if you just want to update your Cowboys gear, look no further than Fans
+ +
United, a one-stop shop for Cowboys enthusiasts. STOP 3: Drinks at Concrete Cowboy If all that shopping has made you parched, stop by Concrete Cowboy for libations. It's the perfect place to start your happy hour or to just sit down and take a breather. It also turns into a nightclub, complete with live music and DJs, so make sure to bring those dance moves. STOP 4: Dinner at Canne Rosso Canne Rosso is a favorite among North Texans for its authentic wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas. With multiple locations across the metroplex, it is only fitting that the restaurant known for the best pizza in Dallas is at the Star, home to Dallas' most popular sports franchise.

THE NEXT TIME YOU ASK FOR A PLASTIC STRAW, GRAB PLASTIC BAGS AT THE GROCERY STORE OR BUY A BOTTLE OF WATER ON YOUR WAY TO THE GYM (WE’RE ALL GUILTY OF SOMETHING!), you should also know that roughly half of the annual plastic production’s lifespan ends after just a single use. And most single-use plastics aren’t even making it to landfills, let alone being recycled. Instead, the equivalent of one garbage truck full of plastic is being dumped into the world’s oceans every minute. Curb your single-use plastic consumption with these reusable counterparts.
