Summer Fun in Frisco SUMMERTIME IS A MAGICAL SEASON. The kids are out of school, the sunshine seems never-ending and there’s no shortage of adventures that await. For many, summer evokes fond memories of childhood—sleepaway camp, family vacations and swimming until your fingers shriveled like prunes. We also celebrate our nation’s independence, host parties for our friends and family (see page 26 for a perfect seasonal recipe) and, if we’re lucky, take a scenic road trip! We planned the ideal summer getaway—playlist included—on page 16. In this issue of Frisco Life, we want to remind you why summer is a season of opportunity. We invite you to use page 24 as your guide to the many Fourth of July celebrations and events going on around here. This month also provides a great opportunity to give back to your community. Check out pages 10-13 for some places you can give your time to right here in Frisco.

2. Frisco Family Services This organization has been responsible for helping thousands of families for more than 25 years and is still going strong. They have helped homeless families with shelter needs, food, water and personal items. They are dedicated to helping increase the quality of life for citizens in need. This organization garners an abundance amount of help by means of donations and volunteer work throughout the year. The Resale Store & Food Pantry is a program that runs throughout the year and provides numerous opportunities for volunteers to help with sorting, packing and shelving donation items such as clothing and canned goods. Family members can help with various volunteer work throughout the year. In the summer months, the kiddos can play their part by participating in the annual Little Hands Summer Lemonade Stand Fundraiser. This allows younger aged children to have their “hand” in helping families in need by collecting funds from lemonade stands. This runs through Aug. 4 and offers fun for the whole neighborhood. Another volunteer opportunity and one that continues to grow each year is the Back 2 School Fun Fair. This supplies students grades K-12 with a backpack filled with school supplies for the year, clothing items, shoes, hygiene items, vision screenings and certificates for a new haircut! Frisco Family Services wants to make sure each child has the opportunity to be ready for each new school year, no matter what their home financial situation looks like. For more information on how you can participate or volunteer, visit FriscoFamilyServices.org.

off-course, there are several towns that will help complete your trip. Fredericksburg is one of the most well-known stops. This town holds vineyards, boutique shops, live music, getaway cabins and much more. Another stop that will excite any traveler is the city of San Marcos. Here, you can meet up with friends to float the river, and there are natural parks to enjoy as well as several tourist options such as exploring the waters during a glass-bottom boat tour. This tour is a must when visiting San Marcos. To explore artistry, you can stop by the Wimberley Glass Works exhibit. View demonstrations on the art of glass blowing and then have the option of purchasing pieces to add to your home.

K I D ’S WHAT YOU NEED: + 10 drops lemon essential oil + 10 drops lemongrass essential oil + 4 drops lavender essential oil + 1 ½ ounces distilled water (minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle) + ½ ounce 95% proof grain alcohol* WHAT YOU DO: In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in essential oils. Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.

*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.

While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).
