WELCOME TO 2018. With 12 fresh months at our feet, we’re opting for a new year of renewal, reflection and change here at Grapevine Lifestyle. As you flip through our pages, you’ll see that this month’s issue focuses on just that with articles focused around one pretty common element when every January rolls around, and throughout our “Active” issue, you’ll surely be inspired to start the year off right with healthy eating, local fitness trends and a quick leg-toning workout. But, even in a new year and a month focused on change, our team still has one collective goal: to share the stories of everything and everyone the place we call home has to offer—and the things that matter most to you, our readers, for whom we produce this magazine each month. May 2018 bring you new goals, new challenges, new successes and new, amazing

CULINARY CREATIONS
(CON TI N U ED)
In the plant world, color and hue rule in terms of disease-fighting capability. Each color represents different benefits and the deeper the color, the more benefit there is.
Red
For example, red foods, like tomatoes, have lycopene which may play a role in helping to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. + Tomatoes, strawberries, watermelon, raspberries
Purple
Purple plants, like blueberries and eggplants, have anthocyanins, which have been found to help benefit the brain. + Eggplant, blueberries, plums, beets
Green
Green plants provide multiple benefits that improve health; two of my favorites—broccoli and kale—have high amounts of lutein and folate which can help enhance eye, brain and heart health. + Broccoli, spinach, kale, green tea, avocado, celery, snap peas
Orange
Some orange foods, like sweet potatoes and carrots, are packed with vitamin A, and other orange foods, like oranges and nectarines, are loaded with vitamin C. + Oranges, carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, orange peppers, peaches
White
White is the color of allicin, found in vegetables like cauliflower, white onions and garlic, which helps protect against heart disease. + Cauliflower, bananas, white onions, garlic, parsnips
Black
Black foods, like black beans, black rice and blackberries, are high in anthocyanin, a pigment that has been linked to reducing cancer cell proliferation. + Black beans, blackberries
The point is, variety is key, and keeping a colorful plate will always serve you better than focusing on one simple color. Track your fruit and vegetable consumption with Lose It!—a personal, app-based weight loss program used by millions of people around the world. Founded in 2008, 72 percent of Lose It!’s users have achieved clinically significant weight loss according to a 2016 study with the National Institute of Health. Free and paid versions are available in Apple’s app store and Google Play store in the “Health and Fitness” category.

FIND THE RIGHT WORKOUT FOR YOU IN THE NEW YEAR
18
Grapevine Lifestyle | January 2018
8
FOR SOME, THE NEW YEAR IS A GREAT TIME TO WORK OUT AND GET INTO THE SHAPE THEY FINALLY WANT, AND FOR OTHERS, IT’S A DAUNTING TIME OF FIGURING OUT WHAT, EXACTLY, THEY WANT TO DO WITH THEIR HEALTH AND FITNESS. All of these needs echo in how the way fitness trends are transforming. Jon Burdine with the Fort Worth Field House claims that more and more people are becoming interested in changing their image and self-esteem. “We’re into this new fitness revolution,” he says. “It’s hard to get into what trend is right for you.” Try one—or all—of these trends from Jon and personal trainer Kirsten Croll to find what works for you.
AEROBICS
/// CROSSFIT
“THERE [ARE] DIFFERENT STYLES OF FITNESS SEPARATING THEMSELVES," JON SAYS. "WHEN I WAS GROWING UP, I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW ABOUT CROSSFIT. IT’S BECOMING A LOT MORE POPULAR. IT’S ALL ABOUT ENDURANCE.” CrossFit, created by Greg Glassman, is a regimen focused on power and core movements such as rowing, gymnastics, running and more. It focuses on the techniques of lifting in a strict, endurance-driven style.
/// AEROBICS
Aerobics is another exercise that can be done in groups and focuses on cardio. It includes spinning, running, dancing and even kickboxing. This exercise, like yoga, is focused on both the physical and mental and is said to reduce chances of developing depression, cardiovascular disease and other issues. Whichever area of fitness you choose, Jon stresses that it all depends on what you’re comfortable with.
“FIND YOUR COMFORT ZONE,” HE SAYS. “FIND SOMETHING THAT MOTIVATES YOU.” CONTINUED >

YOGA

Grapevine Lifestyle | January 2018
/// YOGA
MANY PEOPLE, JON SAYS, ARE SEEKING OUT YOGA FOR STRESS RELIEF AND MEDITATION. Yoga focuses on balance and composure, with deep breathing and stretching exercises. Jon says he uses yoga exercises before lifting weights. The draw comes from handling stress through breathing and calm exercise of the body and mind.
/// FITNESS GROUPS
Jon says his gym has many fitness groups who work out together. As a strength and conditioning trainer, he works with clients on squats, deadlifts and more in a group setting. He emphasizes that people pick what is most comfortable for them, and people seem to be finding a lot of comfort working out in groups of people, whether it be spin classes, weightlifting or aerobics. It provides another level of comfort to be able to track your progress with others or have partners to motivate you.
THOSE WHO LIFT TOGETHER, STAY TOGETHER.
/// PERSONAL TRAINER KIRSTEN CROLL'S TOP FOUR TRENDS
01. CALISTHENIC WORKOUTS: These workouts focus on movement, flexibility, endurance and building lean muscle mass. 02. YOGA/GROUP FITNESS CLASSES: These target cardiorespiratory health, flexibility and muscular imbalances. 03. CIRCUIT TRAINING: This is used primarily for weight loss and building muscle for anyone working within a busy schedule because of its quick, high-intensity intervals. 04. POWERLIFTING: More men and women have begun lifting, squatting and bench pressing to build muscle and lose weight. JONATHAN BURDINE PERSONAL TRAINING

AT GRAPEVINE’S CRYO-X, CRYOTHERAPY IS HEALING SKIN AILMENTS AND INJURIES IN EVERYONE FROM SOCCER MOMS TO DALLAS COWBOYS, ACCORDING TO OWNER ALICIA MULLINS. “When it comes to cryotherapy in the United States, we are the pioneers,” Alicia says. “We knew people were getting tired of taking medication on top of medication for everything. People were looking for alternative treatments, and we knew cryo could potentially fill that need.
"CRYOTHERAPY CENTERS HAVE POPPED UP EVERYWHERE, AND IT IS REALLY EXCITING TO SEE THE TREND IN WHICH WE HAVE HELPED LAY THE GROUNDWORK.” Cryo-X opened in 2011 and also serves the community at a second location in Frisco. It offers whole-body cryotherapy, which consists of standing in a cryosauna for three-minute treatments. Alicia says people often think the process is going to be painful or uncomfortable, but it is actually quite the opposite. “Cool, dry air flows over the surface of your skin,” she says. “And even though we are taking you to below zero temperatures, the air is so dry that you will hardly feel the cold and might not even shiver. It is an invigorating, energizing experience. Endorphins are released into the brain, causing a happy and relaxing sensation. Many clients report feeling a natural high or euphoria.” If you think you can endure 180 seconds of cryotherapy wearing only socks, gloves, undergarments and house shoes, you will reap the benefits of this new-age technology, originally invented to treat arthritis pain. It begins when your body reacts to the cold temperature and pulls blood away from your extremities and into your core. When you step out of the cryosauna, all the nutrient- and oxygen-enriched blood flows back into your extremities, promoting healing. Major benefits of cryotherapy include that it: + Helps reduce pain and inflammation. + Flushes toxins from the body and benefits the lymphatic system. + Promotes deeper sleep by regulating serotonin in the body. + Boosts metabolism and activates calorie-burning for five to eight hours post-treatment. + Reduces the appearance of scars, acne, eczema, stretch marks and psoriasis. Looking to target a specific pain or injury? Cryo-X also offers 30-minute localized cryotherapy treatments. Mullins says three to eight minutes is equivalent to hours of using an ice pack. Perhaps the best part of cryotherapy at Cryo-X is how affordable, and fun, their team has made it. On Wednesdays, enjoy “Cryo Happy Hour” for only $10 and receive a gift—including coupons for free spray tans and workouts from local businesses—every time. Your first treatment is only $20 and comes with a complementary compression massage if you call to schedule. To learn more about pricing and additional services, visit Cryo-X.com .

ARTICLE MADELYN KNECHT | PHOTOGRAPHY KALYN MASTIN
WITH THE NEW YEAR, ALMOST EVERYONE IS READY TO REMAKE AND RESHAPE! The trouble is that not everyone has time to get to the gym around their busy lives with work, school, kids and more. Local independent fitness trainer Kirsten Croll came up with a quick, 15-minute workout to shape up your legs right from home!
PRISONER SQUAT INTO A CALF RAISE Place your hands behind your head, hips parallel to the ground then raise up to your tiptoes. Repeat 20 times. REVERSE LUNGE TO BALANCE With hands on your hips and feet together, do a lunge backward, then bring leg up parallel to the ground. Do this for each leg for a total of 10 times. GLUTE BRIDGE WITH PAUSE For this position, start on your back with your knees bent. Push off the ground with your heels into a bridge and hold for 3 seconds. Your hands should be down at your sides. Repeat 20 times. SINGLE LEG DONKEY KICK This technique starts out on all fours. Raise your leg up and straight out. Repeat 10 times with each leg. Rest for 60 seconds before repeating the entire set two more times.
