Welcome to September and a New Season of Style!

S
eptember in Colorado might be full of hot, Indian Summer days, but it's hard to resist the urge to snap up the fun fall trends popping up in stores and online. For me, fall fashion has always been about self-expression, from grade-school days when choosing the perfect “first-day outfit" had the power to make or break your whole year, to the adolescent years when fashion became a little less creative and a little more about fitting in. (Whew, glad that’s over!) These days, grown-up fashion is about having fun and a “you-doyou” attitude, as my kids would say. It’s in this you-do-you spirit that we've rounded up inspiration for your own season of self-expression, from our Bikers & Babes feature to the latest trends in high-end hair and skincare services (psst... no need to drive into the city). Join us as we interview a national (local) jewelry sensation, tour the burgeoning artists’ scene at Valor Christian High School and share our top picks for a brand new season of arts and culture at the Lone Tree Arts Center. Here’s wishing you an inspired September!

THE VALOR CENTER AT VALOR CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL TAKES ARTS EDUCATION TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL

Highlands Ranch Lifestyle | September 2016
ARTICLE ROBIN BOND PHOTOGRAPHY VALOR CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL
J
ohn Updike famously said that art offers a space for the spirit.
If that’s true, then what the Valor Center at Valor Christian High School offers young artists is a universe. You’d expect a high school to be quiet in July, but that wasn’t the case when yours truly got the deluxe tour of the one-year-old, 100,000-square-foot Valor Center from Arts & Media Director Arie Ringnalda. Where you might expect to see empty spaces was a campus abuzz with summer arts-camp middle schoolers and high schoolers working on special projects — students with passion for their respective crafts, to be sure. As a one-time graduate student in the arts, this author’s mouth was agape as we traveled from the high-tech dance studios, fully equipped with instant-replay technology and a 750-seat performance hall complete with large scene shop and motorized orchestra pit, to world-class recording studios and the Center’s own bistro where students can collaborate in comfort. And that was just the beginning. The living habitat — no, ecosystem — where young artists learn, experiment, practice and grow in their respective disciplines was launched eight years ago but moved into the new $35M privately-funded center just under a year ago. Ringnalda calls the center a mix of performing arts and high-level arts education facility with a state-of-the-art performance hall. “To my knowledge, there’s nothing like this anywhere,” says Ringnalda of the center.

"We’re directing kids toward making a positive impact,” he said, citing as example the CALOS student film festival held each year. “CALOS is Greek for noble,” said Ringnalda, who explained that while they focus their creative endeavors on positive themes, they also tackle more challenging topics that they can process together. BLANK CANVASES FILL UP QUICKLY
“At the end of the day, it’s about providing the best preparation we can give for college and career," says Ringnalda. They leave here with a strong portfolio or reel, depending on their track.” Opportunity and exposure abound, to be sure. The center attracts renowned audition judges from the likes of TV's "The Voice" and brings students around the country and abroad for immersion into their respective fields, leading many students to burst onto the national scene before they’ve even started college. “Students are already making industry connections in high school,” says Ringnalda, citing Valor alum and renowned musician Meagan Thwaites who’s now working with a top producer she met at the HeavenFest music festival while she was still a student. “Last year we were in Nashville and met Rascal Flats and Amy Grant, among others," says Ringnalda. " The students get to meet and rub shoulders with artists who are at the top of their fields.” Add this kind of exposure to Valor's world-class arts education facilities, and students have a golden opportunity for success. “We have this amazing facility, built with the programs in mind, at a very professional level to give kids a professional experience.”

Jewelry Designer Carrie Schafer Inspired By Authenticity + Social, Environmental Commitment
C
arrie Schafer, owner and founder of Original Hardware, a Colorado-based jewelry company, began her journey into jewelry making on a whim. While working as a global team manager for a software company, Carrie found herself wandering into a nearby bead store, looking for a creative outlet to relieve some of the stress of her job. On a wintry afternoon, Carrie settled down at her home in the BackCountry neighborhood of Highlands Ranch and made a few simple pieces. She was instantly hooked. Carrie quickly 18

began amassing more and more jewelry-making supplies, and what started out as a hobby began evolving into a small business, and eventually into Original Hardware. The company’s motto, “Be true to who you are and your life will unfold miraculously in front of you,” is something that rings true for Carrie, and is perhaps the reason behind the founding of Original Hardware in the first place. The willingness to take authentic risks is something Carrie consistently advocates for and is probably the

reason she had the courage to leave behind her steady software job to become an entrepreneur. When asked about her philosophy, she explains, “For me personally, this is my life’s work: to continue to be authentic in how I live my life and what I choose to spend my time pursuing. For me, I’ve found that when I stay open to possibilities, the ones that really augment who I am and what I value in life, more often than not come to the surface.” This idea of staying true to one’s own path is something that not only brought about the founding of Original Hardware, but is the inspiration behind both the making and selling of the jewelry they produce. Carrie, as well as the other female designers in the company, attempt to make jewelry that will augment the journey of their customers. “Jewelry is an expression of who you are,” Carrie explains. “When you wear a piece of jewelry, you are telling others a bit about you and what’s important to you. When customers come into our boutique, they often have a story about why they are there: to buy a special piece for a friend or loved one or even to commemorate a special occasion for themselves. These occasions mark special places along our own journeys through life, and I’m honored when one of our pieces is a part of that.” The pieces are designed to be treasured, and it is evident in their careful and considerate design. Another value important to Carrie is environmental sustainability, something that can be seen in her choice of materials and vendors. All of Original Hardware’s pieces use recycled sterling silver, and 90 percent of vendors used are based in the U.S. For the vendors outside of the U.S., Carrie makes sure that environmental and social practices are carefully
considered to ensure that she can stand behind the way the materials were sourced. Carrie has also committed to crafting Original Hardware pieces entirely within Colorado, a practice she plans to continue as the company grows. In addition to her bricks-and-mortar shop in historic downtown Littleton, Original Hardware is currently sold in 150 stores across the country with pieces regularly featured in Sundance Catalog, a presence that far exceeds Carrie’s early expectations when jewelry making was just a hobby. As for the future, Carrie’s hopes for the company spring in two different directions. “The artist in me says that if in ten years I’m still able to work in my studio and create things that people love, that would be a gift in and of itself! The entrepreneur in me would like to see Original Hardware grow to the point where we have a presence in every state and internationally.” With that growth, Carrie hopes to continue to form partnerships with charitable organizations to increase the amount that Original Hardware can give back to the world and to make charitable giving a key element of Original Hardware’s sales strategy. We are excited to see where Carrie’s lifelong journey of being true and authentic continues to lead the company! Visit Original Hardware at 2336 W. Main Street in Littleton or online at OriginalHardware.com.

BIKERS & BABES
S
eptember in Colorado might still feel like summer, but here at Lifestyle, we've got fall on our minds: a fresh, new season for a chic, new you.
For our Bikers & Babes shoot captured by the talented Noah Berg, we partnered with stylist
Wendy Talmon and Rocky Mountain Harley-Davidson, a unique creative pair, who added edge to these timeless classics. (Think denim, leather and more leather!) Completing the style trifecta was illustrator Sarah Nicholsen of Petite Press who brought her own creative stylings to create the dreamy, illustrated backgrounds. This is admittedly not the first time a motto-inspired shoot has been done: you might remember the September 1991 issue of Vogue and the iconic “Wild at Heart” spread featuring supermodels Cindy Crawford, Tatjana Patitz, Helena Christensen, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Karen Mulder and Stephanie Seymour. Styled by the legendary Grace Coddington, fashion was never again quite the same. Fast-forward 25 years (which, coincidentally, many fashion experts believe to be the full lifecycle of a fashion trend), and it's time once again to revel in rebel fashion. “Whether you're a hard-core biker or just love that classic biker look, you can incorporate some edgier pieces into your own style,” says Talmon. And who doesn’t love a little edge? We stuck with basic black-and-white, adding pops of Pantone's fall 2016 color lines for a bold statement: greys, burgundy, tans and teals. We hope these pages inspire you to make your own bold statement, to fear not the edge of fall, and to always stay wild at heart. CONTINUED >

T
here’s nothing like hitting the open road on your bike on a sunny day in Denver. But finding your perfect stop-off can get tricky,
what with traffic and distracted drivers to spare. With so much to focus on, we wanted to take the guesswork out of finding the perfect roadside spots for kicking up your feet up after a long ride around town. (And pssst ... all of these spots welcome your leathers.) So relax into your seat and enjoy the ride. (And don’t forget your helmet, they do save lives!)

“The Secret Government Deal That Killed Two of Your Biggest Social Security Benefits Overnight!” I was there…
It was around 9 o’ clock on a cool October evening on Capital Hill in 2015. I was enjoying a small group tour after hours when suddenly…there was this mad rush of people blowing by us…in the mix were reporters who were frantically erecting lights and setting up cameras. Then I saw the focal point of all the commotion…Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid were giving what appeared to be an impromptu news conference. Strange…at night?? Maybe not so strange. The next day I found out that two of the most important Social Security benefits were slated to be eliminated on April 30th 2016…POOF!...just like that…gone. Did you hear about this? Most didn’t. Yet millions are still relying on these popular retirement strategies still being there. They are in for a BIG and UGLY surprise. They don’t exist. These changes can have a massive impact on your retirement!
In One Hour We Will Share With You… • What to do now that “file and suspend” and “file and restrict” are GONE • How Social Security REALLY works with taxation (hasn’t been tax-free for a long time) • The two thresholds when your Social Security becomes taxable (HINT…the $ figure on your SS statement is fiction) MOST IMPORTANTLY: We will show you the only remaining strategy to help you strategically reduce or eliminate taxation on your Social Security.

F
rom artists to food to fashion and lifestyle, you’ll find anything that embod-
ies a creative spark on the Among the Colors blog, which is a “lifestyle and community
project focused on bringing color and creativity to your life” as described by founder and Denver-based artist Laura Krudener. Krudener elaborates, “This is where my
inspiration to start a blog came from. To have a platform to integrate the different facets of things that inspire me and, in turn, to help inspire others.” As a reader, it’s easy to get lost in the creative explosion of ideas — a dab of this and that. Get an instant dose of wardrobe inspiration or find a new entrée to cook. In our case, we wanted to feature something a little sweet and savory. “I really love covering the food aspect of the blog because I had dreamt of starting a food blog for a long time," Krudener says. "But my favorite part of the food blog is when I meet people who are trying to give up gluten or just found out they had food allergies and don’t know what to eat. I love that it can be such an inspiring resource for people who have food restrictions.” “[The name] Among the Colors comes from a quote from the 19th-century poet Rainer Marie Rilke. ‘Painting is something that takes place among the colors. One has to leave them alone completely, so that they can settle the matter among themselves.’ I love this quote because it speaks to the creative process as an act of surrender and freedom,” says Krudener.
