CALENDAR YEAR. Summer freedom is drawing to a close, and the school bells have started ringing throughout the Historic Districts. While the thermometer outside tells us we are fully entrenched in the dog days of summer, this month also brings a sense of renewal. It would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents: kids and pets! There’s no doubt we have some serious pet lovers in the Urban Core. Meet a few shop owners (and their four-legged work friends), and you’ll find what makes the bond between humans and animals so special. We also found some great patios to enjoy dinner and libations with your furry family members in tow, and a metro-area artist who will capture your pet on canvas. We also spoke to four community leaders dedicated to ensuring that the youngest of our citizens' needs are not forgotten just because they are on summer break from school.
CORPORATE TEAM CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Steven Schowengerdt CHIEF SALES OFFICER Matthew Perry
Wherever your journeys take you in the Urban Core, we hope you find inspiration in the uplifting stories that come from living, working and playing in the Historic Districts of OKC. Cheers to another wonderful month ahead. We hope to see you around! All the best,

GIVING BACK
On Behalf of Our Kids
FOUR OKLAHOMA ORGANIZATIONS WITH A HEART FOR THE YOUNGEST OKLAHOMANS ARTICLE AMANDA JANE SIMCOE
SUMMERTIME IN OKLAHOMA MEANS MANY DIFFERENT THINGS FOR THE YOUTH IN OUR COMMUNITY. From enjoying a break from school, family vacations, summer jobs and sports to enjoying leisure activities with friends, it can be easy to forget that so many of the organizations that help the children in our community throughout the year are still working tirelessly during the summer months, and there are ways that the community can lend a hand. Four local organizations share their missions and how the community can get involved.
JOE DORMAN OKLAHOMA INSTITUTE FOR CHILD ADVOCACY The OICA is a nonprofit helping to raise awareness about the needs of children statewide, prioritizing child wellbeing, health and safety. HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY GET INVOLVED? You can start by going to our website at OICA.org to look for opportunities to engage. If you want to advocate for children directly, attend one of our training programs or forums. OICA periodically provides training sessions at the Capitol for members of the public to learn how to engage their lawmakers directly. We are also hosting a fall forum at OSU-OKC Oct. 1 and 2, which is an excellent opportunity to learn about the issues impacting children and to hear directly from professionals who spend their time helping kids. If you are less policy-focused but still want to make a difference in the lives of children, consider helping our holiday gift drive, OK Foster Wishes. Every year, OICA works with DHS and other partners to deliver thousands of toys to children in the foster care system. We need volunteers and donors to support this great program. OICA.org

CHERI FULLER OK MESSAGES PROJECT The Oklahoma Messages Project aims to maintain a positive connection between incarcerated parents and their children. Through this multi-media literacy program, families can share a small part of a parent-child routine though reading. WHAT WAS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND YOUR DECISION TO GET INVOLVED? Truly, seeing the need of the children was the driving force. While I was teaching a relational parenting class I created at the largest women’s max/medium prison in OK to help the mothers rebuild a connection with their children, I discovered that the majority of moms never see their children. This is heartbreaking to the moms but far more so to the children whose lives are shattered and who are sent to relatives in another town. To the kids, it’s as traumatic as the death of that parent. So a few compassionate people and I formed a nonprofit, found a national model that we brought to Oklahoma and launched the OK Messages Project, a literacy and prevention program. We train volunteer teams who go with staff into prisons before Christmas, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. We coach and film parents reading to their kids and sharing a positive but vital message, like, “This is not your fault. Mommy is safe, and I miss you, and love you! I have your picture by my bed. I’m so proud of you…” We send the DVDs and books to the children, who read along with their parents every day. Having the video they can play whenever they miss mom or dad makes a significant impact on the kids’ lives. It decreases kids’ nightmares, worry (many fear mom is in a dog cage or beaten up) and sadness—and most of all, gives them hope and a sense of being loved and not forgotten. SUSAN ADAMS RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE PRESIDENT AND CEO Families going through a medical crisis want to be present for every life-saving decision for their child, but the stresses of everyday life along with hotel, gas and food bills can sometimes be overwhelming. That’s where RMHC-OKC steps in to provide a place to stay and meals to eat all within steps of their child’s bedside. HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY GET INVOLVED? Wishlist drives or volunteering as a guest chef are two of the most popular ways to support families with a hospitalized child. Donations of these items help defray our operating costs, allowing us to serve more families. The RMHC-OKC Wish List is a list of the most used items that families use every day at the Ronald McDonald House and Family Room. After a long day at the hospital, there’s nothing more appreciated than a home-cooked meal. Our guest chefs plan and prepare a comforting evening meal at the Ronald McDonald House for our families. To see wish lists or sign up to volunteer as a guest chef, visit RMHC-OKC.org. 16

JANE SUTTER PRESIDENT AND CEO, BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS OF OKLAHOMA COUNTY The Boys and Girls Clubs of Oklahoma County serve more than 4,000 youth, 6-18 years old, in their out-of-school time with positive adult role models and a variety of activities and experiences. Together with the community, they make a tremendous difference in closing the opportunity gap by inspiring and enabling youth who need them the most to reach their full potential as responsible, caring and productive citizens. HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY GET INVOLVED? Volunteering can take any number of forms, from bringing a group of volunteers together to make improvements to the building, to one-on-one mentors or tutors who come on a weekly basis. Members of the community are encouraged to participate in our two community fundraisers: Champions of Youth Celebration in the spring and Flight for Futures (Sept. 27 this year). BGCOKC.org

DIANA'S WORK CAN BE SEEN IN GALLERIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY, INCLUDING JRB ART AT THE ELMS IN THE PASEO ARTS DISTRICT.
FOR ARTIST DIANA J. Smith, the term "family portraits" has a slightly different meaning than one might assume. Her subjects have four legs. Born and raised in Oklahoma, Diana says she has always painted. With a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the University of Oklahoma, she has a background in business and graphic design. In 2008, Dog Gone Portraits was born, including commissioned pieces. Teddy
Diana has participated in many collaborative art shows, as well as a solo show in the Oklahoma Governor's Gallery. Another of Diana's passions is offering her time and talent to local animal rescue organizations, including The Bella Foundation. The "12 Dog Houses of Christmas" is one of her favorite charitable events. For information on commissioned pet portraits, visit DoggonePortraits.com or call 405.755.6927.

"Just coming into the shop and meeting Shop Dog Lucy will lift your spirits and leave you with a lasting memory," Julie says. About a year ago, Lucy was most likely hit by a car and left without the use of her back legs and any caregivers. Rescued by Mutts Misfits, and believed to be virtually "unadoptable" because of her handicap, her fortune changed when shop manager Chelsea met her and felt her heart melt for the pretty pup. The smooth concrete floor and ramps allow Lucy to move around in her adoptive work environment with ease. She almost always runs to greet every customer that comes in and especially loves when kids will sit and snuggle with her while their parents shop. Many customers ask if Lucy has a wheelchair, and the answer is yes— but, Lucy prefers to only be in it for long walks. She moves quickly through the store and can rest more easily when she's not in it. Tin Lizzie's is three generations deep, including Julie's mother and daughter as part of the team, but according to Julie, shop manager Chelsea Haecherl and her assistant Lucy are also very much considered part of the family. Julie likes to tell Lucy's story in hopes that others can see that like people, beautiful dogs are sometimes hiding in imperfect bodies. 905 N. Broadway Ave. 405.228.1014 Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Sunday, 12 p.m.-4 p.m. EARTHWISE PET SUPPLY EarthWise Pet Supply owner Michael Dixon sees plenty of smiling puppy faces come through his Belle Isle pet supply and doggy wash shop. The resident tail wagger, however, belongs to store manager Alicia. Albert is a 3-year-old English Mastiff. According to his mom, Alicia, Albert is a connoisseur of the best pup treats. His favorites include spinach, kale, leafy greens, greek yogurt, dried cranberries, raw and baked sweet potatoes, yogurt-covered pretzels, ice cubes and popsicles. Joe Coffin and Craig Travis, along with shop co-owners Alex and Vixen
Albert loves playing "get the ball" and swapping kisses for belly rubs with the patrons of EarthWise. At the end of the night, he lines up his favorite toys and snuggles with them, using his body to protect them. While Albert provides happy smiles for bath patrons, Alicia provides nutritional advice for pup parents. "People are so thankful when their pets start looking and feeling healthier because of the foods we suggest for them," Alicia says. 1710 Belle Isle Blvd. 405.607.8965 Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, 1-5 p.m.

Try these as a substitute to training treats. + CARROTS—Carrots are a great low-calorie snack high in beta-carotene and fiber. Chomping on them is also great for your dog’s chompers. + GREEN BEANS—Full of fiber and low in calories, plain green beans are great prepared any way! + WATERMELON—Filled with vitamins and potassium, this summer treat is sure to be your pup’s new favorite. For those dog days of summer, watermelon is a great way to keep your dog hydrated! Just be sure to remove the rind and seeds. Learn more about safe food for four-legged friends at AKC.org.

Other banks have branches—we have roots. When our great state turned the corner from territory to statehood in 1907, we too began our existence as The Groves National Bank of Hollis, Oklahoma. As the years passed, the name of our bank evolved and the area we served began to grow. We’ve also grown our product offerings to better serve our customers, but we haven’t forgotten what has made us great. It’s the relationships we create with people, the partnerships we build with communities, and our belief in moving forward - together.
