to the calendar. This day is needed as a corrective measure because the Earth does not orbit the sun in precisely 365 days (it actually takes 365.25 days.)

February is also the month of love, with Valentine’s Day falling on Friday, Feb. 14. So, this month we thought about a romantic road trip to a hidden gem right here in Hendersonville. We also have a story about a place where you can just have lots of fun with that special person or kids in your life. And don’t forget to read our special Parting Thought, that tells the story of how Hendersonville and the surrounding communities came together in love and prayers for a fallen officer. So, Hendersonville, while you fill your home with chocolate truffles and roses this month, remember to fill your heart, too. Find what makes you feel alive—and don’t forget to share it with us.

EXPLORE VIRTUAL REALITY

AT ADVENTURE ALLEY STATE-OF-THE-ART ENTERTAINMENT IN THE CITY BY THE LAKE

ONE OF THE BIGGEST TRENDS IN ENTERTAINMENT TODAY IS VIRTUAL REALITY (VR) GAMING. Featuring high resolution 3D imagery, realistic surround sound and physical motion support, VR games provide fully-immersive entertainment that has to be experienced to be believed. VR systems have become very common at theme parks around the country, including Disney World and Six Flags. Offering superb VR technology, these destinations attract thousands of visitors each year who want to enjoy the ultimate entertainment experience. However, travel and accommodations for theme parks can be very costly, especially for families. Fortunately, Hendersonville folks do not need to take an expensive trip to experience VR. Instead, they can just take a short drive down West Main Street to Adventure Alley, home of some of the most advanced VR games around. Formerly the Holder Family Fun Center, Adventure Alley is Hendersonville’s ultimate entertainment destination for people of all ages. Along with VR systems, Adventure Alley also offers many other fun activities, including bowling, laser tag, bumper cars, go-karts, bungee jumping and arcade games. “We started exploring VR opportunities in late 2018, and we came to realize that this was the future of entertainment,” says Adventure Alley owner, Barbara Holder. “We did a lot of research into the technology, including attending industry trade shows.” 14

In addition to virtual reality, Adventure Alley offers many different attractions, including spin bumper cars.

Jamison Gieter and Delaney Coster enjoy an arcade game at Adventure Alley.

Jaxson Brown and Tori Krisle compete in Hologate.

VR games, such as Hologate, provide audio-visual systems that let non-players follow the action.

After completing her due diligence, Barbara determined that the time was right to take the plunge into the VR world. “Once we committed to VR, we began our rebranding process,” says Barbara. “We changed our name, and we adopted a new logo – ‘Adventure Alley – We make fun a Virtual Reality.’” CONTINUED >

Hologate, created by industry leader Creative Works. Hologate is a high-tech system that features multiple gaming scenarios. Its multiplayer support makes it ideal for group gatherings such as birthday parties and team building. “When we purchased Hologate, it came with only one game installed,” says Barbara. “However, Creative Works has added six new games over the past year, and they are continuing to create new experiences.” After seeing the success of Hologate, the Adventure Alley team continued to expand their VR offerings. In short order, they added two new attractions – Virtual Rabbids, a two-player, three course system, and VR Pods, which offer over 100 roller-coaster ride experiences. As with Hologate, these systems also proved to be very popular. In late 2019, Adventure Alley decided to purchase its most advanced virtual reality system yet, called Blitz. Blitz is an intense multiplayer racing simulation that offers multiple course and vehicle selections. “Blitz features cutting-edge technology that provides the ultimate gaming experience,” says Barbara. “It cost over $200,000.” Looking ahead to the future, Barbara is confident that virtual reality is the new reality. Technically, Spring Haven’s overnight guest facilities are strictly lodging, in that breakfast is not served on-site. However, that difference does not seem to bother guests. “Although we don’t do the breakfast part, we are centrally located so that we are no more than a couple of miles from all of the major dining locations in Hendersonville and Gallatin,” says Tammie. “We reguThe Historic Cabin was built in 1800 and features bedrooms, a large living area and a kitchen. ROAD TRIP (CONTINUED) One of the two bedrooms in the Historic Spring Haven Cabin.

“Lots of great occasions have been hosted here before, but I want to bring a new level of elegance going forward,” says Tammie. “I want our clients to think style and class when they are considering Spring Haven for their venue.” Early on, the Sutherlands decided to take a “slow walk” approach toward marketing in order to make sure that they had the right combination of offerings and pricing. “Promotion was not a high priority at first,” says Danny. “We were new to the business, and we wanted to make sure that we were ready to handle the business once we turned up the marketing intensity.” However, the Sutherlands plan on expanding their marketing efforts during 2020, taking a regional, as opposed to local approach. “We are less than 25 miles from the downtown Nashville Riverfront, one of the hottest destinations in the country,” says Tammie. “We want to let out-oftown brides know that they can come and revel in the “It” city, but still have their wedding and reception at Spring Haven. Like most venues, weddings and engagements are very important elements of business for Spring Haven. Currently, Spring Haven offers three different wedding packages, including the Heritage, the Circa 1825 and the Magnolia Luxe. Each of these offerings is highly customizable, allowing Spring Haven to meet the needs of most bridal parties. Package prices start at $12,500 and up, depending upon selected options. Event scheduling for Spring Haven can be made through inquiries at the venue website or by phone. Overnight getaways can be booked online at either VRBO or AIRBNB. Despite the stress of managing a growing business, the Sutherlands take it all in stride. “Owning and managing Spring Haven is a dream,” says Tammie with a smile. “In my heart, I am just a farm girl who gets to throw fancy parties.” CONTACT INFORMATION SPRING HAVEN MANSION 545 E. ANTIQUES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK. Whether you’re an antique aficionada, a thrifty thrifter or new to the whole concept of vintage revival; whether it’s a hand-me-down, a thrift-store-find or just something cool you stumbled upon at an estate sale; endless opportunities exist to effortlessly incorporate retro, vintage, antique or whatever-you-want-to-call-them items into different parts of your modern home.

WHAT IT IS Antique Chest STYLE IT Coffee Table PRO TIP Revive solid-wood pieces with little actual value by refinishing the wood to your liking.

Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.

Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!

Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.

PEOPLE AND WHO REALLY DEEPLY CARES.” —Debi Mazar Some people were born to lead a life of service. Spencer Bristol was one such individual. After graduating from Station Camp High School in 2007, Spencer entered the U.S. Navy, where he served as a corpsman until receiving an honorable discharge in 2012. After leaving the Navy, Spencer continued his service by joining the Hendersonville Police Department.

“I never saw anyone who wanted to be a police officer as much as he did,” recalls Hendersonville Police Chief Mickey Miller. Spencer’s enthusiasm and his work ethic were always on display. Everyone who met him came away with the feeling that he was going places. Unfortunately, Spencer’s bright career ended too soon, as he lost his life in the line of duty, leaving behind a wife and a three-year-old daughter.

Spencer’s passing was felt throughout Hendersonville, where the community rallied together to pay their respects. Friends and neighbors throughout the city opened up their hearts to express their support for Spencer and for all other police, fire and first responder personnel. They also opened up their pocketbooks, creating fundraisers that raised money to help support Spencer’s family. We at Hendersonville Lifestyle want to pass on our condolences to the Bristol family, and we want to express our gratitude for the generous and caring spirit that makes the City by the Lake such a special place.
