up to 800 ponds full of fish and water lilies across the sprawling acres. As the business grew into a national mail-order business, the postal service in 1932 placed a post office at the Fisheries giving it the name Lilypons in honor of a famous star and opera singer, Miss Lily Pons. As a fourth-generation owner of Lilypons, President Margaret Koogle has lived through the evolution of Three Springs Fisheries into Lilypons Water Gardens. Margaret’s early memories of Three Springs Fisheries make her smile. She recalls it as “great fun” to come to the fishery along with her three sisters, each wearing Mary Janes and white anklets. “We would come and stuff the flyers into the catalogs, and since we rarely

had treats at home, we were rewarded with getting to pull a bottle of orange soda from the old-fashioned soda machine!” she says. Margaret laughs while remembering another crystalline memory of her youth at the fishery. “Mr. Ernest Page worked his entire life for the Fisheries, from the time he was 20 until he was 89 years old. When the workers would drain the ponds, they would put the fish in buckets to sort. Well, Mr. Page would dump the bucket of fish onto the table, and then his hands would fly as he grabbed the fish to sort them into other buckets according to size! He had the quickest hands! I was always in wonder as I watched!” she says. “It was in the 70s that my dad took over the Fisheries, and his passion was the water lily. He changed the emphasis of the business from fish to water lily production and direct to the consumer sales. Something that drove my dad’s decision was the development of plastics, which made it much more affordable to have a water garden since the pond could now be made of plastic,” Margaret says. The business has changed with the times beginning with a primarily mail-order business, to adding a telephone 800 service transitioning to mostly a phone order business, to now almost exclusively online; she has witnessed many changes through the years. The one thing that has stayed constant over the latter years was her father’s drive to learn about and produce the most beautiful water lilies in the world and to educate others about creating and owning a water garden. Margaret and her team strive to carry out the legacy.

Lilypons provides guidance and the beautiful water lilies that adorn Carroll Creek at the Linear Promenade. “Lilypons is a treasure,” says Angela Torchia, Lilypons Marketing Manager. “The spring is the best time to come when all the flowers and greenery are brightening up. We have a park-like atmosphere where you can bring the family and walk throughout the grounds. I enjoy going over to the retirement pond where people can bring their unwanted or too large koi and release them. They’re fun to watch, and for a small fee, you can buy food to feed the fish. It’s entertaining to see them all coming up to look at you hoping for a nibble,” says Angela. In the retail shop, there is a water garden for everyone. They can be small or elaborate, and some won’t even need a bubbler. Angela says they plan to have complete water garden kits so that customers can pick up what is needed to complete their gardens without having to search high and low. She adds, “There is help available if you were thinking of something larger, and we do install and maintain water gardens. We want people to know that everyone can have a water garden! We really try to educate people on what we do and how wonderful it is to have this new backyard that’s so beautiful and so very peaceful!” PHOTO CREDIT: ANGELA TORCHIA OF LILYPONS Lilypons.com

Born and raised here, Mayor O’Connor felt that he knew a lot about Frederick County. But when the opportunity to participate in LFC arose, he knew it would further enhance his ability to do his job. A 1997 alum of LFC, he recalls, “One of the great benefits of LFC is the broad backgrounds and perspectives from so many industry sectors. If you’re genuinely interested in the shape of this community, (LFC) is a program that provides a structured opportunity to learn and experience so many things: history, arts, agriculture, economic development, education, government... ONE WOMAN’S DESIRE TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY BY BRINGING ONE BASKET OF HOPE AT A TIME
ARTICLE RHONDA STEPHENS | PHOTOGRAPHY REBECCA MITCHELL
SISSY ISMAIL SAW GREEN BUT NOT IN THE WAY YOU MIGHT THINK. It was July of 2018 when Sissy began to notice the color green all around her. “I was pulling my car into Greenbriar State Park under the canopy of beautiful trees listening to the radio when the song Evergreen began to play. The artist sang ‘The tree of life is evergreen. It never dies. It never dies,’ and I started crying, but I didn’t know why. What I did know was that my spirit was so lit up by those words, and I thought, what does that mean; the tree of life is evergreen? I went home and wrote it down, laying it aside.” Sissy’s story is of one of incredible odds and courage. At age 33, diagnosed with a terminal illness, the doctors told Sissy there wasn’t any hope and had given her three months to live. She says, “With this diagnosis, we were catapulted into finding a different option.” Sissy’s story turns into an often agonizing six-year journey back to health. While researching healing options, Sissy says she began to be angry with what she was learning about traditional Western medicine’s reliance on pharmaceuticals as the answer. After an initial Western medical treatment, she forewent all other traditional treatments and solely relied upon alternative and holistic methods. Sissy slowly began to heal from her illness. She ate only organic fruits and vegetables, and juiced to cleanse her body of additional toxins. “It wasn’t changing just one thing. I had to change everything. If I wanted to live, I didn’t have a choice. I learned that everything that is given to us from the garden has powerful healing properties,” she says, “Food is medicine.”
22
Frederick Lifestyle | April 2020
From her experiences on the healing path and as a former nutritionist, Sissy says, “I wanted everyone to know how to live and thrive. I told everyone that I would go anywhere and tell anyone if they would allow me to teach them about natural things that heal the body. I asked God to send me anywhere!” Jumping at an opportunity that arose for her, she traveled to Atlanta. Sissy’s sister had called to say she was needed there within 24 hours to speak to a family. “My heart is to bring resources to the lost and forgotten places, and this place was in need of an education on nutrition and wellness training. As we were finishing up, my sister mentioned we were staying at the Green family’s home. My spirit lit up at the name, Green.” The home was surrounded by evergreen trees, and to her delight, even the address was green; the house was on Emerald Lane. Recalling her journal in which she wrote the words of the song, Evergreen, Sissy recounts, “I said to my sister, this is what God had shown me years before when I kept seeing green everywhere! It was at this point I knew I was being led to start a foundation to bring products and knowledge to people, but we didn’t know what that was going to look like.” Sissy’s heart is for bringing hope, healing, organic products, and education to the community. With that goal in mind, The Evergreen Garden Foundation was launched to provide BeWell Baskets full of healing items that are as natural and organic as possible, and books to those who are in need. Each BeWell Basket is created for a specific classification that is titled Family, Bella (girl), Bello (boy), or Baby because different age groups have different needs. Sissy says, “They’ll tell us their story, and we will fill the basket according to their needs.”

“We know the need is there. Our website has applications and we don’t take a screening because we hope that if you truly need it, you will ask for it. In-person and through this basket, we will teach and educate. The basket at the door is not the end of it because a big part of my job is to teach how food will heal the body. An herbalist provided the literature of condensed information on how to begin a Holistic life with links that connect to trustworthy places. If someone reaches out now, I will be the one they will speak with. Eventually, I’ll need a staff to help me navigate our growth and to help with the volume. But in the meantime, I would like to be the one that’s hands-on to deliver a basket and give a hug,” explains Sissy. The Evergreen Garden Foundation will need many hands to accomplish their goals. “We require donated resources, both product and money. We need recipients, and we need volunteers,” says Sissy. She adds that the goal is to provide 100 baskets this first year. Each basket will have a value of $2,000. However, with wholesale licensing, it’s possible to get it down to around $1,000, so the foundation could potentially give away 200 baskets in the first year with the long-term vision of giving away 1,000 BeWell Baskets per year. Some might see Sissy’s near-terminal experiences as a curse, Sissy sees it as a gift and God’s plan for her life, and she’s using her experience to change not only her world but her profession. She’s gone back to school in pursuit of a Doctorate in Holistic Clinical Nutrition and Functional Wellness. Sissy’s future began when she saw green. She knows her path was being revealed to her step by step for a purpose. She says, “I know I can do it. I can talk to people and share the heart of the vision, and I am trusting that it’s going to come to us. It’s a funny thing. My love language is gifts, and some time ago, I wrote down in my journal that I want to give gifts for a living, and I thought, how is that possible? And yet, here I am, going to be able to give gifts! BeWellBaskets.org

Eat organic when possible. Avoid the pesticides that are regularly sprayed on our fruits and vegetables. Skip the candles and air fresheners. Opt for essential oils that gently release healthy fragrance into the air. Use organic hair and skin care products. Drink filtered water. Many water sources are contaminated with chemicals, pesticides, arsenic, lead, and other carcinogenic and autoimmune causing agents. Switch to natural or organic laundry detergent and cleaning products.

CULINARY CREATIONS ARTICLE DABRIA TOMLIN
easy veggie shawarma bowl THE PERFECT DISH FOR A MEATLESS MONDAY DINNER
THESE VEGGIE GRAIN BOWLS PROVE THAT GOING MEATLESS FOR A MEAL CAN BE FULL OF NUTRITION AND DELICIOUS AT THE SAME TIME! Not only are they simple to make, but their ingredients can be multiplied to save for easy meal prep.
serves 4 INGREDIENTS + 1 c quinoa/couscous/ lentils/rice, cooked
+ ¼ c chopped mint + 1 lemon, zested and juiced
+ 14-oz can chickpeas + 4 c cauliflower florets
SHAWARMA SPICE BLEND
+ 2 c broccoli florets
+ 2 tsp cracked pepper
+ 3 tbsp olive oil, divided
+ 2 tsp cumin
+ ½ pint cherry
+ 2 tsp paprika
tomatoes, quartered + 2 cucumbers, diced
+ 1 tsp kosher salt + ½ tsp turmeric
+ ½ small red onion, chopped + ½ tsp red pepper flakes + ¼ c chopped parsley
+ ½ tsp garlic powder
DIRECTIONS 01 Preheat oven to 400 degrees. 02 Prepare grain-base as desired. 03 Mix the shawarma spice blend. 04 Rinse, drain, and dry the chickpeas removing skin. Toss with 1 tbsp olive oil and spread on baking sheet. 05 Toss cauliflower and broccoli florets with remaining olive oil and half of spice blend, setting aside remaining spice for later. Spread onto a second baking sheet. 06 Place both baking sheets in oven and roast, rotating once halfway through, for 30 minutes. Chickpeas will be golden brown and crisp when done. Cauliflower and broccoli will be easily pierced with a fork when done. 07 While roasting, mix together tomatoes, cucumbers, onion, mint, and parsley in a bowl and season with ½ tsp salt and ½ tsp pepper. Toss. 08 Remove the baking sheets from the oven. Toss the chickpeas with the remaining spice blend and lemon zest. Sprinkle the cauliflower-broccoli with lemon juice. 09 To assemble, divide and serve grain-base between 4 bowls. Top with ¼ of the chickpeas, ¼ of the cauliflower-broccoli, and ¼ of the tomato-cucumber salad. 34
