Riverwood Neighborhood Organized a Food Drive During COVID-19 Pandemic The Riverwood neighborhood banded together to organize a food drive during the COVID-19 pandemic in April—all while practicing social distancing! Residents put together bags of nonperishable food items and placed them at the end of their driveway to be collected. Over 420 food items were collected within a six-block radius and were donated to the Great Plains Food Bank.

Buttercream Bliss Custom Cakes to the Rescue! Amanda Sandness, owner and cake boss of Buttercream Bliss, made complimentary dog treats for neighbors out walking their dogs in April. The treats were made using spent grains from Flatland Brewery. Spent grains provide many benefits and are a widely used brewing industry by-product.

GIVING BACK

HELPING TO RESTORE THE LIVES OF OTHERS

SERVICE TO OTHERS, BEFORE SELF, IS NOTHING NEW TO JOHN BRUNSBERG. After serving in the military for 20 years, John and his wife retired in 2015 and relocated from Fairbanks, Alaska to Fargo. The Brunsberg’s have been serving the local community tirelessly ever since. Brunsberg volunteers the equivalent of a full-time position at the New Life Center in Fargo. The New Life Center offers hearty meals, a safe place to stay and Christ-centered support for those who are hungry and hurting in our community. The Center engages a multitude of volunteers to deliver its mission. Volunteerism brings many healthy emotional and physical benefits including connections to others, sharing of expertise, and the satisfaction of knowing you are helping others. The New Life Center is primarily funded by donations and the thrift store is one of its largest sources of financial support. Brunsberg, a carry-over “numbers guy” from military training, played an instrumental role in the shelter’s capital crusade to rebuild and remodel the facility. He also worked to transform the thrift store into a dynamic and productive vehicle for attracting and selling donated goods. If there was a “Find A Way” award, Brunsberg would be the inaugural recipient, although he would rather stay under the proverbial radar. He enjoys assisting with the shelter’s Giving Hearts Day strategies and finding ways to attract donors and volunteers. Brunsberg expresses gratitude for this meaningful volunteer opportunity where he’s surrounded by a population of positive folks at the New Life Center who

are all there to help one another. He notes, “The best way to experience life is when it’s not all about you.” He also feels he was called to serve and that by volunteering, you get more out of it than you put into it. The New Life Center has several different giving options, as well as 12 local drop-off bin locations for its thrift store. The thrift store’s efficient curbside pick-up service enables individuals and neighborhoods to easily band together for clothing donations and scheduled pick-ups. If a community decides to take on such a commitment, please share your photos with us and we will publish them. DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN ONE WORD. Focused WHO IS SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE? Robin Williams has always been a big inspiration to me. His quote, “Carpe diem,” from the movie Dead Poets Society is a reminder that life is precious and our time on earth is limited so make the most of it. He’s had a positive impact on so many, making millions laugh and feel good about themselves, yet suffered himself behind closed doors. The impact his life has made on the world is inspiring. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE? Mindset is very important to me, so there are many that I quote routinely, but Henry Ford’s “whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right” is one of my favorites. WHAT KIND OF IMPACT DO YOU WANT TO HAVE? When I was ten years old, I wondered that same question about my stepfather. He was an alcoholic, not respected by his peers or family and was an untrustworthy friend. I have spent my life knowing what I don’t want to be and made a vow many years ago to never be that. I wish I could say I haven’t stumbled along the way, because I have, yet I’m committed to lifelong self-improvement and am grateful for all the wonderful people in my life. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE FARGO-MOORHEAD COMMUNITY? It has to be the people because it is certainly not the weather! We’re so blessed to live in a community where people really care about each other and will go out of their way to help those in need. I think back to the floods of 2009 and 2012 and how our community rallied around each other. We’re in the land of hard workers and that challenge showed our community’s true grit.

OPEN HOUSE (CONTINUED)

Legs were added to the island to make it feel more like a piece of furniture, while a gas range, statement-piece custom hood, and a lower-cabinet microwave round out the kitchen’s thoughtful design. The black, white, and gray laundry room follows the same beauty and function principles with floor-to-ceiling cabinets, a retractable-door clothes-drying cabinet, three lockers, a dropzone, narrow hallway shelving, a window bench, and an island with extra-wide drawers for craft supplies, gift wrapping, and just about anything else. A wall-mount TV and plenty of bling in both the lighting and cabinet hardware ensures laundry is never boring. Whether entertaining a host of family and friends, or simply settling in for a quiet night to rest and recuperate from a busy week, this home provides function, comfort, and the kind of beauty that time can’t erode.
