This Is Arlington ARLINGTON LIFESTYLE HAS ARRIVED, AND I AM SO HUMBLED BY THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE THIS COMMUNITY. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is LaWanda Morris. I am the owner and publisher of Arlington’s brand-new lifestyle magazine.

For a little background, I am a lawyer by trade. I worked at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for nearly nine years, first supporting the Trial Unit and later managing others who supported the Trial Unit and Division of Enforcement. Prior to that, I worked at Black Entertainment Television, where I supported their legal department and publishing company. Ready for a change—and a little burned out in the legal field—I decided it was time to leave the SEC and follow my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. I started multiple for-profit businesses (including LaWanda Morris Consulting and WeStileU) and a women’s support Meet-Up Group (called WOeMANcipation). These businesses reflect my passions for entrepreneurship, helping others and, of course, fashion. When the opportunity arose for me to start my own lifestyle magazine in Arlington, it was another dream come true! I have seen Arlington grow so much and in so many wonderful ways over the years. I am so excited about the continued growth of Arlington

AROUND TOWN
HUGE TOWER PROJECT APPROVED NEAR AMAZON HEADQUARTERS The Arlington County Board unanimously agreed on greenlighting the development of a mixed-use tower in Pentagon City, not far from Amazon's new headquarters in Crystal City. The tower will be 19-stories and include residential space at 400 11th St. S, where South Eads Street meets Army Navy Drive. The development will include 306 apartments and nearly 11,4000 square feet of commercial space. “The community’s goals for Crystal City... include a better balance of housing and commercial buildings, more affordable housing in this transit-rich neighborhood and new open space,” said Christian

E-SCOOTERS SET TO ROLL AFTER YEAR-LONG STUDY SUPPORTS USE The Arlington County Board approved regulations for e-scooters and other shared micro-mobility devices, following a year-long pilot program. The regulations, voted on in November, allow e-scooters on county sidewalks, trails, and bike lanes, unless marked. Motorized scooters and skateboards will have a top speed of 15 mi. per hour, and e-bicycles will have a top speed of 20 mi. per hour on streets and trails. When operating on public sidewalks, the top speed of all the devices is restricted to six miles per hour. The devices will not be allowed to operate on sidewalks where a protected bicycle lane is available.

LUXURY SECOND-HAND STORES GAIN TRACTION WITH TECH-SAVVY CONSIGNORS ARTICLE ALYSHA SIDEMAN CONTINUED >

(CON TI N U ED)
IT MAY BE TIME TO CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSET. Online consignment sales are becoming big business, a trend exemplified by websites such as ThredUp and The RealReal. Now brick-and-mortar luxury consignment boutiques that have digitized their inventory are riding that wave. Tech-savvy resale shops, such as the Current Boutiques in Arlington, are gaining traction among stylish customers in a way that has eluded typical second-hand stores. The luxury consignment stores are streamlining clothing consignment for busy fashionistas who would like to sell rarely-worn outfits but don’t have time to oversee the process. It’s tough enough to part with five-inch-high Louboutins, even if they are charmingly impractical. Besides launching websites, the boutiques are giving previews of new items on social media sites such as Instagram. They're also adding software that allows favorite consignors to log on with a personal account and keep track of their loaned goods and sales. Some clients can even download their own photos into the store's online database. Luxury consignment, or resale, offers a more curated selection of clothing and accessories, chosen for their ability to retain value even after being resold repeatedly. The appeal of upscale consignment is that items, such as Chanel bags or Hermes scarves, that might have been too pricey for some shoppers, are suddenly affordable. Consumers with money are willing to spend more on a Gucci jacket because they know they can recoup part of the cost by consigning it later. Typically, consignment shops split the profits with consignors. Luxury consignees, such as Finder’s Keeper’s in Westover, have adopted software programs with easy-to-use interfaces for their clients to keep track of their outfits. And keeping tabs on a particular piece is easy at New to You in Falls Church and at Mint Condition in Alexandria because they post new arrivals online. Meanwhile, Shopify.com allows Delray-based Bellies & Babies, to transform its website into an eCommerce destination for high-end baby clothing and maternity fashions. At Agents In Style boutique in Crystal City, first-time consignors are given a contract to sign and an online account. Then they can track what is sold, at what price it sells and what percentage they will receive. They also can check their balance at any time. The store pays consignors who are owed more than $50 every two weeks, so no need to field calls from those in need of extra cash. "I took what I learned from clients and customers and made it into an easier system,” owner Rhoda Wheeler says. 14

Besides the shops and activities, it’s also simply a vibrant gathering place to meet friends or just people-watch. Due in part by the newly infused culture and its main plaza, the real destination here is the entire location. It is well-documented that today’s shoppers are looking for more than what's available online. They want an experience. Malls are still considered a destination, but it’s because they now offer amenities, experiences and entertainment to enhance the shopping experience. An easy Uber ride or car trip from most of Arlington, locals can also hop on public transportation after work.
