SHE’S DRIVEN CANDICE JOHNSON, MOMPRENUER & CEO OF BUTTERUP, NATURAL SKINCARE COMPANY, FOUNDED IN COLUMBIA, MARYLAND IS DRIVEN TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
CANDICE JOHNSON, THE OWNER OF BUTTERUP, LOVES DRIVING AROUND, TO, AND FROM HER HOME OFFICE IN COLUMBIA. Never having to fill up, her 2019 Tesla gets 322 miles per charge. This keeps Johnson on the road to run her business. When her active teenage daughter began to experience debilitating migraines, she started doing research. Johnson was shocked to discover the harmful chemicals hidden in everyday items. Everything from skincare to cleaning products is loaded with harmful ingredients that wreak havoc on our bodies. Out of desperation, Johnson slowly began introducing natural products to her daughter, such as organic foods, pure water, and elements from the earth to put on her skin. Natural remedies made a world of difference for her daughter; who is now happy, healthy, and able to manage migraines without medication. Johnson was hooked. “I started perfecting the formula and giving products as gifts to my family and friends. After positive feedback, my husband, Andre, encouraged me to create the ButterUp brand”. She was determined to make products that are all-natural, nourish the skin, and do not contain harmful chemicals and preservatives. Learn more at www.getbutterup.net

decades, with over 200 councils across North America. Although the program includes running practice after school, participants learn valuable life skills from a research-based curriculum focusing on mental health, community building, and conflict resolution. Girls from all walks of life are invited to participate in the program, regardless of physical ability, or financial status. Executive Director of Girls on the Run of Central Maryland, Jessamine Duvall, began her involvement with Girls on the Run in a deeply personal way. After moving to Maryland from Georgia in the early 2000s, Duvall was introduced to Girls on the Run after her daughter participated in the program as a fourth-grader. After witnessing her daughter’s growth and desire to participate in the upcoming season, Duvall realized she had found something special. According to the GOTR National Headquarters, Girls on the Run is the “only national physical activity-based positive youth development program for girls with evidence of program impact from a rigorous external evaluation study.” With training lasting for ten weeks until a celebratory non-competitive 5K race at the end of each season, the program focuses on girls from Grades 3-5, as well as offering the Heart to Sole program for girls from Grades 6-8. Additionally, high school girls are encouraged to become Junior Coaches and assist their younger counterparts in completing the program. “One of the most beautiful parts of the program is watching how the girls blossom.” Duvall shared. “I always tell people, watching the first girl cross the finish line is incredible, but watching the last girl cross the finish line will make you cry. When you see how motivated these girls are, even if they don’t like to run or be competitive, it’s an inspiring thing to watch them still persevering and pushing themselves to finish the course and come out of their comfort zones.” Duvall became the Executive Director for the Girls on the Run program in Central Maryland in 2016 and has been serving the community ever since. Although her daughter has aged out of the program, Duvall is committed to continuing its legacy in the community. That commitment is inspired by women like Billie Jean King, Lynda Carter, and Christine Blasey Ford for their outspokenness and strength. “We are living in an unprecedented time of women stepping forward -- from the voices calling out for accountability in the #MeToo Movement to entertainers releasing positive messages of self-expression and individuality. We want to reach the girls in our community at an early age and demonstrate for them that they can take up space and speak out. We want to shape these young women into becoming forces for good who will have a positive impact on their community and the world at large,” said Duvall. CityLifestyle.com/Columbia

J E S S I C A C O AT E S HOWARD COUNTY OF ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS (HCAR)
Jessica Coates is the CEO of Howard County Association of Realtors also known as HCAR. HCAR is a trade association serving 2100 members. It’s core values are education, advocacy, and community outreach. Her previous experience as a lobbyist and VP of Government and Community Affairs, exemplifies her strength as an advocate on a local level. HCAR Cares is the non-profit arm of the association and is tremendously important to Coates. She works had to provide volunteer opportunities for their Realtors to serve the community. Coates says her “She-ro” has always been her mother who was a single-parent. Blown away by her mother’s presence at a young age, she was molded by her mother’s work ethic. As a little girl, Coates watched her mother go back to college; it was hard work. Her mother’s dedication to professionalism and commitment to excellence was palpable. Excellence was set as the standard. Witnessing this changed Coates forever. She had never seen a woman reach the level of success that her mother was able to obtain. “Looking back, it was all for us,” says Coates proudly, “I am careful to take on things I can give my best to. I feel I’m representing my mother that way.” Coates advises women to invest in themselves. She goes on to say, “I’ve learned you create your own lane by investing in you. I’m fulfilled because I am serving people and helping people. “

K I M B E R LY P R E S C O T T PRESIDENT OF PRESCOTT HR (HUMAN RESOURCES)
Prescott HR integrates all areas of a company through compliance, improved systems, competencies and employee roles. They transform HR from tactical compliance and administration to strategic leadership by helping their clients put processes into place to grow and thrive as an organization. Prescott believes it is important to give back to the community because others gave to her. Working with several non-profits in the area, Prescott believes altruism is key. Growing up in a predominantly Caucasian private school in Georgia, it was unlikely that Prescott would own her own business in the HR industry. “My mom empowered me to use my voice.” She recalls that being tall, outspoken, and the only African American in her class definitely made her stand out. This prepared her for a professional career in which she would often be the only person of color in the room. “I knew I was smart and capable; I made myself heard. It helped me to establish my voice,” Prescott said. In addition to finding a mentor, Prescott advises women to be honest with themselves and others about what they want. “Don’t dumb it down and don’t let no be your answer. The answer is never no, it is ‘not right now’ or ‘not this way’. We have dreams and we keep them to ourselves, speak your dream into reality.

White beamed, “It doesn’t seem like work, because I enjoy it so much.” Inspired by many women, working with SMC (Southern Management Corporation), White is grateful for the opportunity she has had to build relationships with a great group of polished and driven women. “Suzanne Hillman, our CEO, and President at SMC amazes me,” White says, “she gets so much done with such professionalism.” White is also inspired by her younger sister, Eneia because she forged her own path, is well-spo-ken and independent. Everything I admire in an inspirational woman. White’s sister owns her own design business, Eneia White Interiors, in New York. She feels blessed being surrounded by great women. When asked for her advice to the woman working towards her goals, White says she would tell women not to be afraid to try new things. “Step out of your comfort zone. Find your passion and like what you do.”
H E L E N E R AY N A U D PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF CONSUMER CREDIT COUNSELING SERVICES OF MARYLAND AND DELAWARE INC. Helene Raynuad enjoys her work as the CEO of CCCSMD, a 54-year-old non-profit housing and credit counseling agency. They offer individual counseling services, as well as financial workshops and education on homeownership, credit, consumer debt and student loan debt as well as scam and fraud prevention. Their goal is to offer a path toward financial independence. Last year alone, they completed over 3,000 individual sessions and offered education services to over 10,000 individuals and families in the community. Recognizing that sometimes women, trying to protect their own interests, might not support each other as much as they should, Helene Raynaud says that, “Having each other's back can make all of the difference. The world is a big place, and we need each other for support and encouragement.” Raynaud praises her SVP of Operations, Trish Geddes, for reminding her that she can get through any challenge they face as a non-profit organization, and for being a critical member of her support network. Raynaud advises other women to stay focused on their goals. “Life happens, you get discouraged, but don't ever give up. Stay the course." 22

Columbia Lifestyle | May 2020
UPON ELLICOTT CITY’S HIGHEST POINT RESTS A BEAUTIFUL, HISTORIC EDIFICE THAT HAS BEEN A PART OF THE HEART OF OUR COMMUNITY SINCE 1837. The Patapsco Female Institute was an institution of higher learning where women were taught subjects like Math, Chemistry, and Botany during a time when it was thought that they were not capable of learning such things. The women who attended this elegant finishing school were taught, molded, and guided by prominent female leaders of the time. Among those leaders was Almira (Hart) Lincoln Phelps. An experienced school leader, Phelps served as Director of the Patapsco School for fifteen years, lifting the school to national recognition and raising enrollment to 150. Directing the curriculum toward sciences, mathematics and natural history, Phelps strove to train highly qualified teachers. Before, during and after her tenure at the Institute, Phelps authored many books, including Familiar Lectures on Botany, referred to as “Lincoln’s Botany,” Lectures to Young Ladies, Botany for Beginners, Geology for Beginners, Chemistry for Beginners, Natural Philosophy for Beginners, Lectures on Natural Philosophy, Lectures on Chemistry, and Dictionary of Chemistry. She also wrote novels, like Caroline Westerly: or The Young Traveller from Ohio. Phelps was one of the first women to be elected to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Since closing its doors as an institution of higher learning 1891, this magnificent structure has served as a hotel, a theater, a convalescent home, and even a WWI hospital. Thanks to the efforts of The Friends of the Patapsco Female Institute and Howard County, its deteriorating structure was restored in 1995 and it is currently used for weddings, educational events, and historical tours. The Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park is located at 3655 Church Road in historic Ellicott City. Tours are on Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 pm, April through October. Private and group tours are available year-round, weather permitting. For more information, call 410-313-0421.

SMOK E D S A L MON S A L A D WI T H BLUE BE RR Y VINAIGRE T T E Dr. Shif recommends green leafy vegetables, berries like blueberries (high in antioxidants), and fish (high in omega 3’s) to improve eye health. Here is a great recipe to get all three ingredients in one healthy meal. Smoked salmon salad with grilled fennel and fresh blueberries, drizzled with blueberry vinaigrette. This sweet vinaigrette is the perfect match with the salty salmon, that combo makes the salad divine. For the dressing, use Belgian blueberry stroop, but you can use marmalade or some thick blueberry syrup.
INGREDIENTS
VINAIGRET TE
+ 300 g mixed salad with radicchio
+ 8 tablespoons olive oil
+ 20 cherry tomatoes
+ 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
+ 1/2 cucumber
+ 4 tablespoons blueberry stroop
+ 1/2 fennel
+ 2 cloves garlic, chopped
+ 1 red onion
+ 1 shallot, chopped
+ 400 g smoked salmon + 6 tablespoons blueberries + 1 tablespoon olive oil + salt and pepper + chopped parsley + 4 tablespoons walnuts
INSTRUCTIONS Step One: Cut the fennel into thin slices and bake it with oil in a hot grill pan until tender, season with salt and pepper. Step Two: Cut the cherry tomatoes in half, slice the cucumber and onion. Step Three: Cut the salmon into strips. Step Four: To make the vinaigrette, just whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Step Five: Arrange the salad on the plates, add the chopped vegetables and salmon. Then garnish with fresh blueberries, walnuts, and chopped parsley. Serve with blueberry vinaigrette. Enjoy! She states that leading with kindness was taught to her by her mother. Bacon acknowledges her amazing board of advisors who also provide motivation. “One of the members is a former student of mine, and now she educates me,” says Bacon. Her teaching style is relationship-based, which is why the connections with her students are so strong.
