WE WANT TO TAKE A MINUTE TO SAY THANK YOU. Thank you to all the inspiring people of our community. It never ceases to amaze me how many truly great people and organizations we have right here in our community. We are consistently blown away by all of the endless philanthropic efforts, charity and nonprofit organizations that exist and continue to grow in our community. We are constantly reminded of this through the new people we meet and the stories we hear and get to share every day. I am humbled and honored to be part of such a community that is always finding more ways to give back. In my experience, the biggest gift in life is gratitude—“the quality of being thankful:

NOSTALGIC TIME. Arizona has many local escapes that act as the ideal place to bask in tranquility, and Coal Mine Canyon is one of the more notable ones, leaving its visitors feeling very thankful for nature. The stunning, mostly untouched canyon is on the border between the Hopi and Navajo Indian Reservations. It sits on the edge of the 120-milewide amazing “Painted Desert.” This canyon is accessed from Highway 264 between Tuba City and Old Oraibi. A small, used road forks south off of the US 160. (The canyon is off of Highway 264 between mileposts 336 and 337). At first sight, about 15 miles from Tuba City, the commonly used viewing area is accessed after a half-mile drive along a dirt track. This dirt road is mostly fine for all types of vehicles, and because many people don’t know about this gem or simply haven’t navigated it because of its remote nature, Thanksgiving weekend can mean a peaceful retreat for those looking to escape and explore the Canyon. The Canyon offers a small picnic table area near a windmill on its outskirts, and visitors will easily notice an unbelievable mix of eroded spires, hoodoos, gullies, fins and cliffs in every color of the rainbow. The rocks that are on the rim are soft and crumbly composed of layers of the Dakota Sandstone group. Visitors should hike with caution. “I loved catching the sunrise over Coal Mine, even if it was a frigid 13 degrees!” photographer Annemarie Comes says. “My fingers might have been numb that early in the morning; as I witnessed the gorgeous sun illuminating the hoodoos—made it worth it. The beauty is astounding, and the fact that it does take a little effort to find it and go see it makes it all that much more worth the visit. I loved pulling up to the windmill and slowly discovering this incredibly diverse hole in the earth. Coal Mine Canyon is definitely filled with a variety of colors and rock formations that will leave a lasting impression. A daytime visit to hike the exterior top edge and to view all of the colors in the canyon would be fun, or go to watch the light change over the canyon during sunset. It might be a bit warmer and just as phenomenal.” November 2019 | North Scottsdale Lifestyle

Scottsdale City Ballet ARTICLE STACI HAUK | PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY JENKS

22

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | November 2019

THE WEATHER IS BECOMING CRISP, AND OUTDOOR FESTIVALS AND ACTIVITIES ARE ABUNDANT IN SCOTTSDALE. The Scottsdale City Ballet hopes to bring an air of elegance and classic dance to the area with performances by a company that will truly immerse itself in the community. “I think Scottsdale is the perfect spot for a ballet company; there is a constant hum and desire for more art, and ballet feeds the soul and shakes up our daily grind,” Maggie Rupp, founder, says. After a dream career dancing as a principal for Sacramento Ballet, Maggie knew she wanted to live closer to her family. In summers prior, she had spent time in Scottsdale and fell in love with its ambiance of “enjoying life.” “While dancing for Sacramento Ballet, I worked under the Artistic Directorship of Ron Cunningham and Carinne Binda,” Maggie says. “Every day in the studio, I got to learn from them and soak up every detail of whatever ballet we were rehearsing. They have this way of making the most intricate of details so important and are truly master mentors and storytellers. This certainly translated through the performances they put on the stage. There has been so much goodness poured into me through their love of ballet and art as a whole, and also from the love and support of my family, that I decided I want to give that goodness back and create a professional ballet company here in Scottsdale. Scottsdale City Ballet was born so stories can be told for decades to come through the nearly ineffable medium of dance to captivate and inspire all ages.” Scottsdale City Ballet is unique because instead of performing on a grand scale, the goal is to be out and about in the community, building performing relationships with local artists, musicians, restaurants, hospitals and retirement homes, and therefore, have as many performing opportunities as possible. Whether it be on stage at an outdoor event or participating in a pop-up show paired with rock ‘n’ roll music, Maggie strives to eliminate the preconceived notions of what ballet is and isn’t. “We plan to cater to our whole audience by doing a little bit of everything. I want ballet to feel accessible and relatable to our audience—no different than going to a concert or sporting event.” SCBallet.org Facebook: Scottsdale City Ballet Instagram: @SCBallet

“BALLET IS A MAGICAL THING; IT CAN BE DESCRIBED AS BOTH AN ART AND A SPORT. BALLET DEFIES WHAT OUR ANATOMY SHOULD DO. IT REQUIRES EXCELLENT COORDINATION, STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY. IT’S QUITE ETHEREAL WHAT DANCERS CAN DO. BALLET DOES MAKE YOU SWEAT, IT CAN MAKE YOU INCREDIBLY SORE, AND THAT’S NOT EVEN MENTIONING THE PAIN BALLERINAS EXPERIENCE WITH THEIR FEET DANCING EN POINTE ALL DAY. ALL THAT SAID, AND YOU HAVE TO MAKE IT LOOK EFFORTLESS WHILE YOU ARE DANCING. I BELIEVE IT IS WONDERFUL AS A SPORT BECAUSE IT WORKS ALL OF YOUR MUSCLES AT ONCE, WITH YOUR BRAIN BEING THE MUSCLE THAT IS WORKED THE MOST. “ —MAGGIE RUPP November 2019 | North Scottsdale Lifestyle

Charleston’s is a known name in the Valley and offers a plethora of delicious fall favorites with an ambiance that is meant for family togetherness. Modern Yoga Owners Speak to Their Inspirations ARTICLE STACI HAUK | PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY JENKS

JOHN AND NICOLE SALISBURY ARE CO-OWNERS OF MODERN YOGA, A VINYASA STUDIO LOCATED IN THE HEART OF MCCORMICK RANCH. With more than 60 weekly classes for all levels of yoga practitioners, they pride themselves on operating a family-owned studio with the philosophy that yoga is for everyone, even if you can’t touch your toes. “You will often find our 6-year-old, Ryder, hanging out at the front desk, or you may meet our studio bird, Larry, the mustached parakeet who lives there full time,” Nicole says. Both she and John are Arizona natives, John being born and raised in the Scottsdale area. They moved to McCormick Ranch to raise their son and decided that they wanted to open a yoga studio right in their own community. “With a small child and lots of pets at home (two dogs, three cats, four birds, two pigs, and 13 tortoises to be exact), it was important to us to be close. John has taught in the Scottsdale community for over 20 years and has built a following of loyal, dedicated yoga practitioners who were eager for Modern Yoga to open.” Aside from their thriving business, the family is heavily involved in philanthropic efforts statewide. It is essential to them to give back and take inspiration from others who are doing the same.

WORK WITH ANIMALS:

+ “We are very involved in helping and donating to the Selah House and Carefarm in Sedona, Arizona. I have two friends who have both lost children and have received grief counseling from Dr. Joanne Cacciatore at the Carefarm. They have both told me she saved their lives after their losses, so it hits very close to home. It is the only place like it in the United States. Dr. Cacciatore rescues abused and abandoned animals, and bereaved families go there to receive grief counseling and work with the animals for healing. The animals learn to trust and love again while the families heal. I have a special connection to the farm; two pigs I have rescued from bad situations now live at the farm and give lots of love to families who really need it.”

+ “One of the many things I love about owning a business is the community it has created. I am that crazy person who will run through traffic to rescue a loose dog or spend hours in 115 degrees to rescue kittens. I rescue 10-15 animals per year, and our community has really stepped up and has helped me find homes for all of these animals, from dogs, cats and 110-pound tortoises to pigs—you name it, and I will rescue it.”

INSPIRATION TO CONTINUE HELPING OTHERS THROUGH YOGA:

+ “My husband was inspired by his stepfather, Dave Oliver. He was a yoga teacher in Scottsdale until he passed away in 2014. He introduced John to yoga in his early 20s, and it changed his life and has provided him many opportunities. I believe my husband is able to continually give the same gift his stepfather gave him to hundreds, if not thousands of people over the years. I know he is an inspiration within our community and has helped many people. I can’t go more than a few days without being stopped by someone who recognizes me as ‘John’s wife,’ and they tell me how wonderful he is, how he has helped them and in some cases, changed their lives.”

INSPIRATIONAL JOURNEY ARTICLE STACI HAUK | PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY JENKS

KNOWN AS THE”’AUCTIONTAINER,” A NICKNAME GIVEN TO HER BY ALICE COOPER, LETICIA FRYE IS A LEADER IN HER INDUSTRY FOR GIVING EACH EVENT HER INNOVATIVE FLARE THAT HAS BECOME THE TRADEMARK OF HER CAREER. Although her impressive resume speaks for itself, it is her passion for helping others, and the path she has overcome to find happiness and success, that truly sets her apart. “I have dealt with the loss of my first husband, becoming a single mother with no means to support my kids,” Leticia says. “I’ve endured pain from a horrific accident and suffered further loss of a loved one and an ended engagement due to those circumstances. I have learned through it all that while pain isn’t optional, how you handle it is. You don’t have to stay in pain.” Leticia credits philanthropy for her ability to find strength and overcome adversity. “One of my most meaningful endeavors has been mentoring women. I was in the same place that they were at the time—little money, no hope—but I had the mindset that I will not stay in this state. They told me that my belief that they could overcome is what helped them. I say the shift occurred when they started believing in themselves through motivation and mentoring.” Leticia says that leaving her footprint on this earth is very important to her—something that will alter human behavior or change the course of humanity for the better. “As a hospice volunteer, I would assist with dementia patients. There was a man who I spent six months with. He was an accomplished businessman father, grandfather and war veteran who instilled so much wisdom in me. I often left thinking, ‘Who helped who in the end?’” As a youth camp counselor, Leticia was often asked why she wanted to be a counselor at her age. She would reply by telling them it was hopefully going to make her a better parent by listening, being their friend and being a safe space for them. 30

“GET THROUGH LIFE’S FLAMES BY GIVING BACK. YOU FIND A SENSE OF PURPOSE AND JOY, SELF-WORTH, AND YOU GAIN PERSPECTIVE—THINGS ARE NOT AS BAD, AND YOU AREN’T AS WEAK AS YOU BELIEVE. YOU’LL FIND A TREMENDOUS RECLAIMED SENSE OF YOURSELF THROUGH THE HELP YOU CAN PROVIDE FOR OTHERS.” —LETICIA FRYE “My kids faced dark times after losing their dad; my daughter will tell you that had I not learned so much from those kids, she wouldn’t be here today. I went at it as a peer, not a parent, and learned how to better parent as a result.” Leticia credits the many amazing people she has met along the way for teaching her that grief is dealt with differently by everyone, and giving back helps maintain balance. “Tom Shadyac, who directed such films as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was also CEO of the fundraising arm of St. Jude. He, like myself, suffered a massive injury in an accident. He once asked me what was taken from me in my accident and I answered, ‘balance.’ But did I have balance in my life before my accident? Not really. So that wasn’t taken from me. I was becoming more balanced through devastation by only picking up the pieces I wanted to pick up and moving on.” Leticia has recently penned a book called No Reserve, which will be out in late summer 2020. Her inspiration to become a writer stemmed from writing a book that she needed to read. “Reserves are put in place during auctions, and I thought, what reserves do we put on our lives? We need to leave things to chance and be open to opportunities. We need to give back and ‘lean out’ by surrounding ourselves with diverse people and experiences.” With so much on the horizon, Leticia has a very special way she is celebrating her 50th birthday this year. “I have chosen 30 people in my life, and each day of November, I will participate in an act of kindness, then write about it to them in a birthday card. They will know that they are my greatest gifts and because of them, this birthday happened.”

THE HOLIDAYS SPARK AN INTEREST IN ABUNDANCE AND ALL THAT GLITTERS. Hosting a posh dinner party can be exciting but seem like a daunting task. Adding a personal chef and event planner to the mix means helping your guests feel at home with elegance and warmth, coupling a delicious meal with on-point ambiance. Nicole Anders is an event planner who excels at helping to host events with personalized hospitality. Nicole has proven her value through exceptional attention to detail and the versatility to coordinate team efforts with diverse objectives. Nicole Anders Event and Lifestyle Management was founded upon the meaningful vision of making her clients’ vision come true. A full-service event and lifestyle management company, she allows the client’s vision to come to fruition while she handles the details individually tailored for each client’s design and desire. Chef Markus Ford has been cooking for more than two decades. His career has gifted him the opportunity to cook for celebrities, dignitaries, political figures (including two presidents), a member of the British royal family, several celebrity chefs and even the occasional TV appearance. He draws his inspiration not only from current trends, but his world travels to more than 40 cities in some 25-plus countries. “Laid Back Chic” is one way to approach the dinner party this season. “People love entertaining outdoors, but they still want an edge. This tablescape is designed with metallic linens that are sheer which add texture. Drama is created by mixing high and low centerpieces. Black glass makes a bold statement in tall thin Eiffel tower style pieces,” Markus says. The “Holiday Buffet” is for those who want to stick to tradition. Nicole and Markus arranged a Norman Rockwell-style turkey dinner, only adding a bit of Cajun spice. This has been perfectly accented with traditional cornbread stuffing that has been enhanced with crawfish and andouille sausage. Cocktail parties are a specialty for Nicole and Markus. The key is small portions, such as ceviche in hand-carved pink Himalayan salt shot glasses, baby lamb lollipops with tarragon mint and pomegranate molasses, along with fresh vegetable spring rolls. A special thank-you to The Brexley for providing the perfect backdrop for our dinner parties.

“MY ADVICE TO THE IN-HOME ENTERTAINER IS TO NOT FORGET ABOUT THE SMALLEST DETAILS THAT LEAVE A LASTING IMPRESSION ON YOUR GUESTS—KNOWING YOUR GUEST’S PREFERRED COCKTAIL OF CHOICE, PERSONALIZED PLACE CARDS, ATTENTION TO EACH GUEST’S DIETARY NEEDS, OR A PARTING GIFT TO THANK YOUR GUESTS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO BE WITH YOU IN YOUR HOME TO CELEBRATE THE OCCASION IS CRUCIAL.” —NICOLE ANDERS

“ONE OF MY FAVORITE QUOTES IS, ‘IT’S NOT DONE UNTIL IT’S OVERDONE.’ DON’T HESITATE, JUST DO IT. IF YOU THINK THE PARTY NEEDS AN EXTRA DOZEN ROSES OR AN EXTRA DOZEN CRAB CLAWS, JUST DO IT. AND LASTLY, YOU CAN NEVER GO WRONG WITH SOMETHING WRAPPED IN BACON, AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A VEGETARIAN ALTERNATIVE.” —CHEF MARKUS FORD
