Nicki, thanks again to you and Darrell for all your help in decorating our home on the bay! We were so relieved to have walked into your store after searching everywhere in Southwest Florida for quality coastal furnishings at an affordable price! You and Darrell listened to our thoughts, looked at pictures of our space and made suggestions that were perfect. Your flare for coastal design, quality product and excellent service has made our house a home. Needless to say, we were delighted to look no further! — Jill and Peter / Sarasota, Florida & Syracuse, New York

NO MATTER WHERE YOU CALL HOME IN OUR LOVELY REGION, ONE OF THE BEST REASONS TO BE THANKFUL FOR LIVING HERE IS OUR WILDLIFE. Cottontails, grey squirrels and ibises populate our lawns. At any body of water, little blue herons wade beside great egrets. Red-shouldered hawks patrol the skies. Gopher tortoises burrow in our parks, coyotes run across our golf courses and sandhill cranes strut through our parking lots like they own the place. But, of course, they don’t. As development continues, animals and people come into conflict. Fishing line snares all manner of birds and aquatic mammals. Golf balls are painful projectiles to roseate spoonbills. And above all else, cars maim our animal friends without regard to feather, shell or fur. Fortunately, the folks at the Wildlife Center of Venice are here to help. According to the Wildlife Center’s director of operations, Pamela DeFouw, and treasurer, Sandi Raasch, the nonprofit was founded to serve a regional need and is celebrating its 15th year with a $650,000 capital campaign to expand its facilities. “We have four full- and part-time staff and 125 volunteers,” Pamela explains. “Our staff includes rehabilitators who assist and care for the injured animals. We work with area vets, who donate their time or charge a very low rate. We also work closely with other animal services, such as Florida Fish and Wildlife and the Sheriff’s Animal Services. Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, release. We really want these animals to go home where they were found. They have the best chance for survival in the territory they know, where they may have a mate, burrow or nest.” Last year, the Center rehabilitated more than 5,000 wild animals, including nearly 1,000 cottontails. Bobcats, foxes, coyotes and all types of raptors are just the beginning of the wildlife the Center has rescued. Part of the Center’s work is education, raising awareness about how the public can avoid injuring animals, such as cleaning up fishing line, never throwing fileted sheepshead carcasses back into the water where they can puncture pelicans’ throats, helping turtles finishing crossing roads in the direction they were already going (taking a turtle back where it came from will just make it cross the road yet again), understanding that fireworks can cause adults to flee a nest, and not picking up what might at first glance seem like orphaned animals. “If people find a wounded or orphaned animal, they should first call us,” Pamela explains. “Our dispatcher will ask a series of questions. People find smaller rabbits and believe they’re orphans. But rabbits are on their own The Wildlife Center’s director of operations, Pamela DeFouw, with a great horned owl

just 21 days after birth and the size of a tennis ball. People see baby birds hopping on the ground and think they’re abandoned. But it’s just fledging season. The parents are above, still taking care of them. Sometimes we have to do some educating about which animals need rescue.” When an injured animal is found, the public can bring them to the center or trained volunteers will be dispatched. The public should never try to rescue animals that could be rabies vectors like raccoons, skunks or bats, nor animals that can panic and cause injuries like raptors or sandhill cranes. “We need monetary donations, food for the animals and volunteers,” Sandi says.“ But we are not a zoo and don’t accept visitors. We try to keep these animals as wild as possible. There is very little human interaction with them as they are rehabilitating. Remaining wild gives them the best chances of survival.” “The more people know about the animals we live among,” Pamela adds, “the better these relationships will be. We get calls every day about wildlife removal, which The Wildlife Center of Venice's Adrianna DeFouw with a rescued sandhill crane
we don’t do. This is their home, and we’re fortunate to have the diversity of wildlife that we do.” Visit the center’s website at WildlifeCenterOfVenice.org for further information and to donate. 925 N. Jackson Road, Venice | 941.484.9657

A Neighbor to Know HABITAT FOR HUMANITY’S EMILY SHAW
ARTICLE TONY D’SOUZA PHOTOGRAPHY PRION PHOTOGRAPHY EMILY SHAW IS THANKFUL FOR THE NONPROFIT WORK SHE DOES AND THE LIFE EXPERIENCES THAT SHAPED HER VISION. Emily first came to Habitat for Humanity South Sarasota County simply looking to lend a hand. “A good friend introduced me to Habitat here,” says Emily, originally from Maryland and mother to two adult sons, the recently-married Zachary, 28, and Taylor, 26. “I took part in Women Build Week and helped put up drywall for a new Habitat house.” With a desire to do more for our community, her outgoing personality and past work experience led to a position with Habitat three years ago as community outreach coordinator, a position for which Emily—known around town for her friendliness, network building skills and upbeat public speaking on behalf of Habitat—is perfectly suited. “I love being at Habitat,” Emily says. “I’m so proud of the work we do and the difference we make in the lives of our families. Owning a home dramatically improves a family’s overall chances for success. It leads to so much more stability and independence, no longer having to move from rental to rental year after year. There’s a special pride that comes with homeownership. Children do better in school, and many go on to college.” Organizing and leading more than 600 Habitat volunteers, Emily now runs the Women Build Week where she got her start. She’s also always reaching out to community groups and churches, helping gather support. After all, Emily’s passion for Habitat’s work comes from an important personal experience. “There was a time when I struggled myself as a single mother,” Emily says. “That time taught me what these young moms are going through. In an expensive housing market like ours, finding stability can be such a challenge. My favorite part of the work is the day of the dedication when we hand over the keys.” “Emily’s sons call her almost every day,” says Habitat’s development coordinator and Emily’s friend, Christina McCauley. “That really tells you who she is. Her son, Taylor, flew down here once and just surprised her.” “Taylor was in the Marines, and I really wanted him to come home for Christmas,” Emily says. “He said he couldn’t, and then there he was. He popped right out of the bushes.” 26

NAME: Emily Shaw ORGANIZATION: Habitat for Humanity South Sarasota County WHO ARE YOU? Emily is Habitat for Humanity South Sarasota County’s community outreach/volunteer coordinator. She manages more than 600 volunteers and makes many public speaking appearances in the region on behalf of Habitat and its mission. WHAT DOES HABITAT FOR HUMANITY DO? Since 1992, the nonprofit, Habitat for Humanity South Sarasota County, has built 143 single-family houses in our region for families who qualify for the program and is currently building eight homes per year, with plans to steadily increase over the next several years. The Habitat Family Selection committee evaluates applicants based on need, ability to make mortgage payments, willingness to participate and other criteria. Once accepted into the Habitat program, applicants give 300 hours of labor, attend Habitat homeowner courses, meet income guidelines and are required to save $2,400 for their down payment and closing costs. Habitat for Humanity always needs financial donations to pursue its housing mission. Another way that Habitat raises money is through its ReStore (1400 Ogden Road, Venice | 941.493.0529), which sells second-hand furniture and household items. ReStore is always seeking donations of gently used furniture and offers free pick-ups. Volunteers of all skill levels are needed to run the ReStore and to build the Habitat homes. According to Habitat’s development coordinator, Christina McCauley, “Habitat takes pride in our homes, is energy efficient and has won numerous awards.” Special events include the annual Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build Week, usually held the last week of October. This fundraising event is to empower women to help families build strength, stability and independence. Participants are asked to Habitat for Humanity South Sarasota County's Emily Shaw
each raise $125. An annual Faith Build brings together local congregations in Habitat’s faith ministry to build a home, and on Jan. 10 next year, Habitat South Sarasota County holds its “A Night at the Speakeasy” fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. at the Plantation Golf and Country Club (500 Rockley Blvd., Venice). Salvation Army of Venice to Host Traditional Thanksgiving Luncheon Major Charles Whiten and Major Julie Whiten oversee the entire Sarasota County Area Command of the Salvation Army.
IN A SEASON OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH OVEREATING, THE SALVATION ARMY OF SARASOTA COUNTY HELPS TO PREVENT SOUTH COUNTY FROM GOING TO SLEEP HUNGRY. On Thanksgiving Day, the Salvation Army of Venice hosts a community Thanksgiving luncheon from noon to 2 p.m. that includes traditional Thanksgiving fare. The meal is open to everyone, serving families and individuals, so each person feels at home for the holiday. It takes place at the Community Center located at 1051 Albee Farm Road in Venice. Last year, 150 people attended the Thanksgiving luncheon, and the Venice Symphony Orchestra entertained the guests with a performance. The Salvation Army is aware that not everyone in the community is able to come to the event and was assisted by the Venice High School football team delivering 100 meals to local homebound members of the community. Partnering with All Faiths Food Bank, the Salvation Army gives turkeys to those in need prior to the holiday, for those wanting to have their holiday at home. “The Salvation Army is grateful for the opportunity to provide help and hope to those experiencing some of life’s most difficult moments. We know that some of those we serve are at their lowest and serving a traditional Thanksgiving meal, as well as providing groceries for those who will prepare their own meal, are meaningful ways to express the support and care of our wonderful community,” says Major Charles Whiten, Sarasota County Area Command. Please contact the Salvation Army of Venice to volunteer or donate as the faith-based organization works to provide for those who need assistance in our community. The Salvation Army’s Food Pantry is always in need of pasta, macaroni and cheese, bagged rice, instant mashed potatoes, jelly, peanut butter, other goods, and toiletries. 1051 Albee Farm Road, Venice 941.484.6227, ext. 25125

A silver-toned multicolored sea glass necklace and earring set has the complexity and grace of living coral. Silver and semi-precious stone inlaid starfish are found across the collection, with the cozy, welcoming shop accentuated by whimsical underwater paintings and a mermaid theme. “Terry has an awesome talent,” says Tony Pitts, manager of Beach Life by Terry. “She loves using materials that remind you of the ocean, things that offer that coastal Florida feeling. Opened in January of this year, Beach Life by Terry builds on Terry’s success online. On Nov. 29 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., Beach Life will be holding its “Champagne Friday.” Shoppers can enjoy complimentary champagne, mimosas and lite bites at the store while discovering an eclectic array of clothing and gifts. “People love to browse here,” says Tony. “We want them to have a relaxing experience, to take their time and enjoy themselves. At Beach Life by Terry, people come in and they don’t really know what they want until they suddenly see it. Sometimes they come in looking for jewelry and they leave with home décor.” Offering a competitive price point, Beach Life by Terry has interesting collections of everything from kitchen towels to key chains, to candles, to handmade dresses, and to oil lamps made from seashells. Handcrafted soaps are extremely popular, and so are juice cleanses. Higher-end items include the handmade semi-precious-stone jewelry. “Our lines are really unique to us,” says Tony. “Almost all of our jewelry is handcrafted with care and is one-of-a-kind.” Paintings by local artists decorate the walls, a bubbling fountain adds to the theme and calming feel of the store, where the color scheme is ocean blues. Terry takes her inspiration from her days kayaking and paddleboarding. Beach Life by Terry captures in sterling silver, lovely

VENICE LIFESTYLE ASKED, "WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR THIS HOLIDAY SEASON?" NAME: John Yurosko BUSINESS: Sea Glass Lamps And More 941.484.4209 SeaGlassLampsAndMore.com THANKFUL FOR?
For America, the greatest country ever. For my loving and guiding parents and siblings, and my grandparents who came from "the old country." For my partner, Shirley, and our honest, true friends. For the opportunity to leave the world a better place; in the words of Walt Whitman, "Whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition, to know even one life has breathed easier." Happy Thanksgiving!

I’m thankful for God. He helps me when I am discouraged or going through hard times. He helps me appreciate what I do have and not focus on what I don’t have. Also, the kindness of strangers. I recently read about an anonymous farmer who purchased 100 generators for Hurricane Dorian victims in the Bahamas. I found this so heartwarming.

What I am most thankful for is the community we live in. Venice has such a fantastic population. Venice not only supports local businesses such as mine all year long—and especially in the long hot summer—this town also gives wholeheartedly to those in need and supports its young athletes and students with vigor.
