FOR JEANNE AND KEITH LISTON OF LISTON DESIGN BUILD, WORKING WITH THEIR FRIENDS TO CREATE THEIR DREAM “FOREVER HOME” WAS A DREAM IN ITSELF. “We had worked with them on updating and adding to their previous home, so the level of comfort was there from the get-go which made the process unbelievably smooth from beginning to end,” Jeanne says.

Leveraging their 15-year relationship, the two couples came together to build and design an elegant yet comfortable 7,500 square-foot home in St. Charles County. Working off of inspiration from the homeowners’ lake house, the end product gave them the perfect, peaceful getaway they were looking for – right at home – and just in time for a global pandemic. Although their family couldn’t have been happier upon moving in during March of 2018, they also couldn’t have anticipated the relief of having space for the entire family just two years later when COVID-19 changed everything. “The shared spaces we built into our plan have never been more important than they are now,” the homeowners say. “We knew we wanted a house that allowed us to do everything we could possibly CONTINUED >

casual dining area just a few feet away, or to the formal dining room down the hall. Another highlight includes a large study with striking custom-built bookshelves dedicated to an entire wall filled with family treasures and mementos. The sophisticated study takes the term “accent wall” to an entirely new level. Between the multiple layers of shelving and a near floor to ceiling window to offset the darker wood, this office brings it all together for a polished, modern look. In a separate wing of the house, the master bedroom boasts detailed ceiling treatments and fixtures for a unique, cozy look. The bright master bathroom can be found beyond sliding barn doors that open up to a large walk-in shower, and free-standing bathtub. This master bath seems to go on forever with oversized mirrors alongside clean, white cabinets, tile, and doors. The Liston team made room for the beautiful bathtub by constructing a custom nook as well as building in a designated makeup area around the corner. While the initial ideas and inspiration remained intact throughout the process, this classic and casual custom build has shown what deliberate space planning can do for a home, an entire family, and even an unexpected quarantine. But with a lower level like this one, why ever leave home? Making the choice to install sliding glass doors to brighten the area, Liston Design Build ensured there was plenty of natural light to stream into the casual living area along with an entertainment space built for a king (or in this case, an entire family). Building a home from the ground up has always allowed for custom detail and specific design choices, but this project in particular will always have a special place in Jeanne and Keith’s hearts. “We were able to build and design an incredible home for some of our favorite people. Knowing we helped give them everything they could have ever wanted for their family is such a special feeling.” CityLifestyle.com/StCharlesCounty

And using cranberries and oranges to "add style" can turn an ordinary dish into extraordinary, like this Cranberry-Orange Pork Loin...a classic dish that’s perfect for entertaining any type of group.
Cranberr y-Orange Pork Loin + 1 tablespoon oil + 1 pork loin (4 pounds), tied at 1-inch intervals + 14 ounces cranberry sauce + 1 cup dried cranberries + 3/4 cup orange juice + 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon + 3 strips orange zest + salt, to taste + pepper, to taste

NEAL STEARNS HAS BEEN IN THE CAR INDUSTRY ALL HIS LIFE, AND ALWAYS DREAMED OF RESTORING A VINTAGE TRUCK…ESPECIALLY ONE WITH THE BODY STYLE OF 1947-54. That dream was recently realized when he completed this 1952 Chevy pickup truck. He says a “friend of a friend” found it in a cow pasture in Gerald, MO. He bought it for $800 sight unseen. It took many letters to the state of Missouri, several trips to the Mo. State Highway Patrol Inspection Station in Jefferson Barracks and to Jefferson City and, and a 14- month legal process to get the title and licensing for it. “The first thing I did was get it all sandblasted so I could even tell what body parts were rusty and needed replacing. Eleven body panels needed to be replaced…floorboards, cab corners, bottoms of the doors…and the rest sandblasted and reworked,” says Neal. His wife, JoAnne, asked if he had a name for it and he said, “No, but I’ve got a song for it. You know that Johnny Cash song, ‘One Piece at a Time?’“
RESTORING A CLASSIC
18
St. Charles County Lifestyle | September 2020
And so it went. One piece at a time…with a variety of parts from around the country. He purchased it in September 2016 and was able to make it drivable by April 2019. “It’s got a ’78 Chevy Camaro front end suspension and engine, an ’87 Oldsmobile transmission, a 2003 Lexus differential under the back end of it, a Monte Carlo steering gear, and an S-10 Chevy front seat. It’s got an aftermarket heating and air conditioning system and radio. The paint is a custom color from a paint company in Georgia,” says Neal. “When you have a truck like this, you’re never really done with it. You’re always changing, improving and fixing it. I want to be able to take it anywhere.” The car has won awards in several local car shows, including First Place at JJ’s Restaurant car show in St. Charles last year.

RENOVATE & REFINE
Country Manor Restored to its Fo r m e r G r a n deu r ARTICLE JUDY PETERS
PATRICIA MCKELVEY’S METICULOUS RENOVATION AND CREATIVE VISION PATRICIA MCKELVEY HAS A HEART FOR RESTORING HISTORY AND ALWAYS WANTED TO RENOVATE SOMETHING THAT HAD ONCE BEEN GRAND BUT HAD BECOME NEGLECTED OVER TIME. She found that opportunity in New Haven, MO, when she discovered a 62-acre farm and homestead in November 2015 and soon started restoring the home that she named Steeple View Manor, for its view of the neighboring church steeple…and transforming it into a charming four-bedroom rental retreat and event venue. That was the dream behind McKelvey Vineyards, at 8901 State Hwy YY in Missouri Wine Country. 22
St. Charles County Lifestyle | September 2020
“That’s actually what attracted me to this land…the beautiful 19th Century stone farmhouse. I really wanted something historical, that was in sad shape, that I could restore back to its original condition,” explains Patricia. According to historical records, the property was homesteaded in 1853 via a land grant from then-president Franklin Pearce to an immigrant family named Twelker, who built the home in 1871. Around 1920 it was sold to another family and then again in 1953, so she is the fourth owner. “There had been a couple of additions to it, lots of paneling added, and it had become dilapidated over the last several years. But it’s the historical aspect of it that attracted me.” She says they started construction in May 2017 and finished in December, but it took many months prior to that to hire an historical architect to research the history. Then they had to get on the State and National Historical Register. “We drew up and submitted our plans to the National Parks Service and after the back-and-forth revision/approval process, finally the plans were approved and we could start the construction,” she says. “But there’s always hidden things that come up along the way, that we had to go back and get approval on from the National Parks Service.”

RENOVATE & REFINE (CONTINUED)
She describes the décor as “elegant and fragile because it’s historic, but everything in there is original and authentic to the original German-style home. “The floors are original…there’s no insulation, it’s all limestone with plaster. So, there was a lot of plaster repair we had to do. The kitchen cabinets are all reclaimed barn wood, the countertops are soapstone (a natural substance), the bathroom vanities are poured concrete and reclaimed wood, and the trim around the doors and windows are all replicas from the original trim that we found under layers and layers.” They also found a couple of artifacts including a letter written in German, dated 1871. “It was so brittle, but I’m going to take it to someone that can help me preserve it.” She says her biggest challenge was finding the right people to do the kind of work needed to restore as much of the original home as possible…the old-style artisans who like to do that. And, trying to find historic things like the claw-foot tub that came from an old mansion in the Central West End that was being restored. There had been an addition put onto the house, but she had seen photos of the original front, so she wanted to be sure to reproduce it just that way…even down to the exact trim. “I eventually had the idea of putting in a vineyard on the property, and as I was planning this, the historian found out that the Twelkers had an extensive vineyard and winery on the property. I couldn’t believe it! They harvested the grapes and made the wine on the property, put it in big wooden vats on a wagon and took it to St. Louis to sell it.” So, the farmhouse and vineyards has now been restored to their former grandeur, even receiving a Missouri Preservation Award. The meticulous restoration made room for modern updates including large screen TVs, satellite TV, Wifi and a Sonos® sound system. Its four well-appointed bedrooms comfortably sleep eight, and the fully functional kitchen has an adjoining summer kitchen. Outside, the expansive patio features a wood burning pizza oven and fireplace. McKelvey Vineyards is a great place to spend the day, or to rent out for family reunions, weekend retreats, showers, a girl’s weekend, or any kind of celebration or party. “For example, we have a wedding party that’s going to have their rehearsal dinner there on the patio, spend the night in the manor, and the next day they’ll get dressed and get ready there, have their pictures taken there, get married on our wedding pad which is right outside the home, and have the reception up at the pavilion,” says Patricia. OCTAGONAL BUILDINGS AND STRUCTURES ARE CHARACTERIZED BY AN OCTAGONAL PLAN FORM, WHETHER A PERFECT GEOMETRIC OCTAGON OR A REGULAR EIGHT-SIDED POLYGON WITH APPROXIMATELY EQUAL SIDES. Octagonshaped buildings date from at least 300 B.C. when the Tower of the Winds in Athens, Greece, was constructed. Octagonal houses were popularized in the United States in the mid-19th century. There aren’t many in Missouri…and just a few in St. Louis. In Glendale, there’s an octagon house designed and built in 1886 by Demetrius Jannopoulo, president of the Missouri Tent and Awning Company.

The building stood vacant the last several years but Greater Missouri Builders, along with architect Ron Powell, are renovating it to house both small businesses and non-profit organizations that are looking for a unique and diverse space. “When I looked up and saw this ceiling, I just knew I had to have this building…because it’s so unique and special,” says Ron. He said he could envision using it as part of a non-profit he would develop called The Octagon Building, which would serve as an umbrella for several charitable endeavors.

Having recently designed a 3-story octagon house in Columbia, MO., Ron is very passionate about this particular building because of his vision for it, which includes it serving as an art gallery, meeting & event space, offices and fundraising center. “A lot of non-profits have a hard time finding meeting and event space, so he’d like to have this available for things like Rotary luncheons and fundraising events,” says Rotary member Sally Faith. “The Rotary has toured the building. AMERICANS ARE SPENDING MORE TIME IN THE KITCHEN – COOKING, EATING, AND SOCIALIZING – ESPECIALLY THESE DAYS. According to realtor.com, “the kitchen has become the most valuable room in real estate.” Whether you’re considering putting your home on the market, or just want to give your kitchen an update (but not a complete renovation), you may want to consider a smaller project such as refinishing your cabinetry. This small, but effective remodel could give your home cooking space just the facelift it needs to feel like you’ve stepped into a kitchen worthy of Gordon Ramsey. Enter Envision Cabinet Refinishing, a one-man shop founded by Ryan Shelby, and located in St. Peters. Ryan started his business three years ago after deciding that college wasn’t quite the fit he thought it would be and started working at a company that refinished cabinets. He says the company provided him with on-the-job training and helped him find the niche he had been looking for..that is, something he enjoyed doing.
