Who Runs the World? LADIES OF FARGO, WHERE WOULD WE BE WITHOUT YOU? It is during May that we, as a country, celebrate mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers. But here at Fargo Lifestyle, we want to recognize all of the women who make our community great. They are truly impressive and each and every role they fill is crucial to Fargo's success. While it takes a village to raise a child, the members of that village also shape those who reside within it, and it is with great joy that we are part of a community that continues to raise one another up, without judgment. The shutdown has had a significant impact on the small businesses in our community. These local businesses and small mom and pop shops are often hit the hardest, as they have fewer resources to get them through difficult times, and they need us now more than ever. It is our hope that we, as a community, can help them through the hard times. With that in mind, we wanted to share some of our favorite local businesses with you, as well as some tips on how you can support all the companies that are the backbone of our community. COMMUNITY MOVERS 5 LOCAL WOMEN AT THE TOP OF THEIR GAME
SHEENA SANDO OWNER, HOME INSTEAD SENIOR CARE WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF WHAT YOU DO? I love so many aspects of my job but the most rewarding is seeing the bond our caregivers have with their clients. It is so much more than a working relationship; they are an extension of our family. DO YOU HAVE ANY SELF-CARE RITUALS THAT HELP YOU DECOMPRESS AFTER A STRESSFUL DAY? We talk a lot about self-care with our caregivers and families. I’m a huge believer that if you aren’t taking care of yourself, how do you expect to take care of others. I enjoy coming home and having dinners with my family. My son Trew is quick with a joke, so we end up having quite a few laughs. A glass of Pinot Noir and a bubble bath doesn’t hurt either! WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D LIKE TO GIVE THE WOMEN IN OUR COMMUNITY? Do everything that scares you. We hear it all the time that “fear holds us back,” and truly it does. It holds us back from learning more about ourselves, experiencing more in life and building new relationships with others. WHAT KIND OF LEGACY OR IMPACT DO YOU WANT TO LEAVE? I want to be known as a woman who achieved balance, unconditional love for my family and achievement and empowerment for others in our community.

K AT H E R I N E K I E R N A N BROKER/OWNER, ASPIRE REALTY
WHAT’S SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? People would never guess that just months ago, depression and an unintentional prescription addiction nearly ended my life. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH BY SHARING YOUR STORY WITH OTHERS? To bring awareness to prescription drug abuse. One of the major contributing factors in this epidemic is the misprescribing, or overprescribing, of easily abused medications. If I can help by telling my story to one person, by offering to be a lifeline to one person, then every single thing that I went through will be worth it. WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D LIKE TO GIVE THE WOMEN IN OUR COMMUNITY? To listen to your gut, and to speak up when a doctor or a medication does not feel right for you. To ask for help before it is too late. And to always, always, show compassion—because you never know what battle each person you meet is fighting. WHAT KIND OF LEGACY DO YOU WANT TO LEAVE? I always thought I had to leave my kids a legacy of a big, successful business and a larger-than-life lifestyle, and that’s not what they need. The legacy I want to leave for my kids is that it’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay to lean on others and have others lean on you. You don’t need to be superhuman; you need to be alive, strong and happy. For others out there who are struggling, that’s the number one thing. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AS YOU CONTINUE YOUR RECOVERY? Continued personal growth in all ways—mind, body, and spirit. I also look forward to being a beacon of support for others who may be struggling the way I did and to lend support long before their situation becomes as dire as mine unfortunately did. JODI PLECIT Y EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, PEOPLE’S RISING ACADEMY WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? That I was very suicidal and wanted to end my life multiple times about 6 years ago, and I lost 150 pounds through diet and exercise, and now power lift. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF WHAT YOU DO? I love getting people excited about taking back control of their lives so they can be happy and live without chronic pain and suffering. To drive them to their own personal passions and crush their fears! WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D LIKE TO GIVE THE WOMEN IN OUR COMMUNITY? Don’t be a victim of old ways of thinking. Do what you want, as long as you aren’t harming or hurting anyone else. WHAT KIND OF LEGACY OR IMPACT DO YOU WANT TO LEAVE? I want to change the way people look at their health and care of themselves in order to help them live their best, healthiest autonomous lives, and I want them to be able to look in the mirror and say “I love you!”
KELSEY RASCO OWNER, DASH & WHITE WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF WHAT YOU DO? Hearing my kids talk about working at Dash & White one day. It’s fun to see them engaged with the customers and teaches them the foundation of work ethic and professionalism. WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL THE MOST CONFIDENT? When customers ask if I’m part of a chain; it tells me that people recognize how unique my store is and that’s so satisfying! WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D LIKE TO GIVE THE WOMEN IN OUR COMMUNITY? It’s important that we don’t live inside the lines that society tries to create for us. Love where you are and don’t be afraid to color outside the lines. WHAT KIND OF LEGACY OR IMPACT DO YOU WANT TO LEAVE? Most importantly, I want my kids to have the opportunity to follow in my footsteps. I also want to have an impact on the community. My store isn’t just about selling fun boutique furniture, it’s also about enjoying special moments with my customers.

DONNA BLOCK PRESIDENT OF LUX COMMUNITIES, AN ENCLAVE COMPANY
WHAT DO YOU DO? I lead our property management division by analyzing all areas of the business and communicating a strategy to achieve success. Overseeing a team of 40+ people committed to delivering an exceptional experience to our residents, I develop and present trainings, create processes for efficiencies, and communicate each day to our partner development and construction entities on design and market research. HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE A WORK-LIFE BALANCE? I am intentional about “being present” wherever I am. When I’m at work, I’m focused on being as productive as possible. The same goes for my family. When I’m with them, they have my undivided attention. I understand what I need to maintain balance and have learned that there are times when I need to say “no,” and that’s okay to do. WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D LIKE TO GIVE THE WOMEN IN OUR COMMUNITY? Don’t ever second guess yourself! Women tend to overanalyze mistakes or decisions. Make your choice, have your reasons, and stick to it. It is okay for someone to disagree, but never discredit why you made that decision in the first place. WHAT KIND OF LEGACY OR IMPACT DO YOU WANT TO LEAVE? If I could choose anything, I would want to be known as a humble leader. Every person I impact in my life should remember me as a genuine person that truly cared for their interests and stepped up for those interests. Interviews have been edited and condensed.

Studies suggest that adolescents with a non-familial role model tend to have higher self-esteem than those without. BIO Girls connects participants with mentors who help teach them necessary life-skills. The mentors lead small group sessions and discussions on topics such as self-care, healthy relationships, kindness, and leadership. The discussions encourage real conversations and form long-lasting relationships between the participants and mentors. By practicing the skills they learn during each session and throughout the program, the girls can cement those skills for use now and in the future. Non-competitive and all-inclusive physical activity is also an essential piece of the curriculum, as it reinforces life skills like accountability, goal setting, and dealing with challenges. When

Mentors are there to offer motivation and guidance as the girls work towards accomplishing a physical activity goal by the end of each session. The non-competitive nature of the program emphasizes that physical activity can be used as a way to relieve stress and anxiety.

BIO Girls has seen tremendous success over the last seven years. By 2013, the organization grew from one location to three, serving approximately 100 girls. Today, BIO Girls serves over 2,000 girls across 53 locations in North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Funding for BIO Girls is two-fold. Though BIO Girls has a registration fee for participants, the organization primarily

relies on support from businesses, foundations, and individuals through donations and fundraising efforts. Donations not only cover the overhead costs but also make it more affordable for participants. Heilman explains, “The all-in cost of one BIO Girl participant is $212, but we keep the participant registration fee intentionally low at $65 to help eliminate the hurdle that often comes from inflated registration fees.” In 2019, BIO Girls held its first annual gala, which featured Olympian speaker, Carrie Tollefson. The 2020 BIO Girls Gala will take place on October 2nd. In addition to the gala, BIO Girls is set to host its first-ever 5K and youth run, Find Your Kind, on May 16th. The youth run will be 0.62 miles to represent the 62% of adolescent girls who battle low self-esteem. FLIPPING THROUGH A MAGAZINE WITH BEAUTIFULLY CURATED ROOMS AND FILTERING THROUGH IMAGES ON SOCIAL MEDIA IS ENOUGH TO GET MOST PEOPLE EXCITED TO DIVE INTO THEIR OWN HOME PROJECTS. Some may even find inspiration by watching home and garden shows. Before taking the plunge, you have to decide whether to hire an interior designer or decorator or tackle the project yourself. If it’s the latter, we tip our hat to you! If you choose to hire a professional, we don’t take our job lightly. We are your liaison, your advocate, your expert. In some cases, we’re even your project leader to ensure the original design intent is carried through correctly. It’s essential to do your due diligence when hiring an interior designer or decorator. Review their portfolio to see if they can accommodate your style. In addition, ask them about their background and design process.

INTERIOR DESIGNER VS. D E C O R AT O R What is the difference? Professional interior designers have the education, experience, and/or examination. Decorators have no formal education or examination. However, that does not diminish their talent or the experience they may have in the field. There is legislation in certain states on the terms one may call themselves based on education and examination. This typically applies to commercial design and includes the titles interior designer, decorator, and registered interior designer or decorator.
+ EDUCATION. Professional interior designers typically receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts or Science in interior design, which trains individuals on ergonomics, specifying appropriate materials due to safety and accessibility. + EXPERIENCE. Experienced interior designers ensure spaces are accessible and meet national and local building codes, along with specifying applicable commercial finishes and materials. + EXAMINATION. Qualified interior designers, as determined by education and hours worked under a registered interior designer, are then eligible to test their knowledge and experience. They are required to not only create a visually pleasing space but one that is also functional and accessible.

EATING SATURATED FATS FOR MAINTENANCE OF A HEALTHY HEART
Yet, overweight and obesity rates continue ARTICLE NICHOLE JACKSON-LIND, APRN, FNP-C & SAMANTHA KOEPP, LRD
to rise at an alarming pace. According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death in men and women, with approximately 647,000 Americans dying from the disease each year. Further, the United States spends roughly $219 billion on heart disease-related health care and medications annually. We aren’t eating saturated fat, so what gives? What if I were to tell you that it has never been saturated fat’s fault? It has everything to do with refined grains, sugar, and highly processed foods that are full of polyunsaturated fats like vegetable oils and seed oils (sunflower, soybean, etc.) that increase our insulin levels and leave us feeling tired, fat, and heartbroken. While these foods are staples in a low-fat diet, they are destroying America’s health. It’s time to develop a new way of thinking about the quality of food we eat, not only to trim our waists but to save our hearts. Eating a heart-healthy meal doesn’t have to be a hardship. There are plenty of ways to create a healthy meal that is a treat for our taste buds. For example, this delicious recipe includes nutrient-dense, low starch
