THE KITCHEN IS THE ENGINE OF THE HOME. We naturally gather there to refuel and both kick-start and wind down our days. As with any engine, when the moving parts in the hardest working room in the house fail, it slows us down. The experts at local franchise Kitchen Tune-Up specialize in revving up rundown kitchens. Contrary to what you may have heard, updating a kitchen doesn’t have to be an allor-nothing endeavor. Do as little or much as your kitchen requires for a refresh. Choose from Kitchen Tune-Up’s five levels of services to get your kitchen back on track.

“For homeowners, there are so many moving components, it’s hard to keep track of everything and know what happens, in what order,” he explains. “We have partners that do countertops, flooring, painting and other projects. We are more than happy to step into a project manager role, get all the pieces together and coordinate the various parts to get the job done.” NOT JUST FOR KITCHENS With a focus on cabinetry, Kitchen Tune-Up isn’t only for the kitchen. They also update bathrooms, pantries, closets, laundry rooms, garages or anywhere else requiring storage cabinets. Experts recommend sealing natural stone countertops annually, and Kitchen Tune-Up offers a fast and effective 3-step process to clean, seal and polish granite countertops in any room. “We enjoy transforming dark and dated spaces to bright, modern and happy places,” says Matthew. “It can be a simple fix that lasts and looks beautiful.”

THERE IS A SWEET SPOT WHERE THE COLORS ARE CLASSIC AND COMFORTABLE, FAMILIAR BUT NEVER BORING. This year’s Pantone Color of the Year is a color we’ve all seen countless times but maybe haven’t taken a moment to appreciate: Classic Blue 19-4052. “PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue [is] a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. “A boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking.” The Pantone organization created five complete color palettes featuring Classic Blue to guide people on how to bring this year’s special shade into their lives at work or at home. Each palette conveys a different mood, showcasing the versatility of Classic Blue. To learn more, visit Pantone.com. You probably have some Classic Blue in your home already, but we found local merchants who offer items in this hue to share with you. Along with home items, ReStores also accept and recycle various electronics and metals such as copper, brass, steel, aluminum and iron. “We’ll pretty much take anything that’s metal because we can scrap it,” Patrick explains. “We take in and test appliances and we can also scrap them if needed. We actually have a company that picks up these items from our store and recycles them for us. The only things along those lines that we can’t accept are Cathode-ray tube (CRT) monitors, but we’ll take computers, laptops, VCRs, DVD players, cameras, video game systems and basically any type of electronics.” Find lists of acceptable items and more information about donations and volunteering online. HFHGC ReStores are open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Whether you’re remodeling, spring cleaning or downsizing, consider donating home goods to any of the area’s five ReStore locations to support local families and to pave the way for their future. In the process, you might also find some great deals on spruce-up items for your own home at great prices, furthering the work of the ReStore. When you sign up for a meal subscription box, you get to decide if you want all of your food for the week delivered or just a couple of meals. You can pick the plan that is most compatible with what you are looking for, and with many companies, you can also decide whether your boxes

Try to avoid leaving your boxes overnight! You can always log in to your account and choose to skip a delivery if you realize you won’t be home.

delivery

Most food subscription boxes will allow you to choose a delivery day and time frame that works best for you. Your grocery items will be packaged as intuitively as possible, with any freezer items in specially insulated sacks and refrigerator items tucked in with ice packs. Bonus: You can reuse the insulation and ice packs in kids’ lunch boxes, on road trips or in your own lunches at work.

Depending on what you order, you may need some of your own supplies. When you select your meals, think about what you will need to cook the food in and if any other kitchen utensils would be helpful. Have them ready to go so you don’t have to make any last-minute trips to the store, defeating the purpose of getting your box delivered! Look over the prep times and cook times to ensure you won’t be rushed, and have fun! If the meals are foods you would enjoy reheated, you could do all of your cooking the day you get the box to meal prep for your week, or you can just store the ingredients to the other meals in your fridge and cook them throughout the week.

let’s eat!

This is the really fun part! It’s time to start taste-testing. Make a note tab in your phone for tracking what you love and what isn’t your favorite. That way, when it’s time to select more meals, you know what you have tried and what you absolutely have to try again. Don’t forget to ask your family what was a hit and a miss. Who knows—maybe the kids love some of the Purple Carrot recipes and don’t even notice how many veggies they are eating!
