PAGE TURNERS We’re talking suck-you-in can’t-put-it-down GOOD? Modern romance novels contain much more than “happily ever after” these days. No longer just your average girl-meets-boy story, the billion-dollar romance fiction industry has enough sub-genres to keep a diverse, loyal fan base happy. There is literally something for everyone. Most romance readers start early and grow up addicted to the genre. They either grabbed a paperback off of mom’s shelf, or squirreled one away to a quiet corner of a library, forming their lifelong habit. For me it was a book found discarded on a bookshelf in our living room. The book was Menfreya in the Morning by Victoria Holt and it had it all - mystery, history, suspense, and most importantly, the promise of the headstrong heroine finding her one true love. My teenage self was instantly hooked and gobbled up every Victoria Holt novel the public library had in circulation. From contemporary to fantasy, there’s an abundance of options for every type of romantic. If you like to laugh, cry, swoon or sweat, there’s a romance novel out there for you. In the spirit of the month of love, I offer this taste of some romantic reads that await your beck and call.

ABOUT THE WRITER Blogger. Marketer. Native Fredericktonian. Jen’s passions include community service, running marathons and waxing poetic about the tortured soul of Professor Snape. Rarely found without her nose in a book (or her iPhone), you can find her musing about life on the East Coast at PursuitOfItAll.com.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Jenny Han This young adult novel is so wildly popular that it sparked two sequels and a Netflix movie. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is a sweet, funny, and heart-warming story of Lara Jean, who has never openly admitted her crushes, but rather wrote each boy a letter about how she felt, sealed it, and hid it in a box under her bed. One day she discovers ARTICLE JENNIFER GERLOCK

that somehow her secret box of letters has been mailed, causing all her crushes from her past to confront her about the letters: her first kiss, the boy from summer camp, even her sister’s ex-boyfriend, Josh. As she learns to deal with her past loves face to face, Lara Jean discovers that something good may come out of the letters after all.

The Fault in Our Stars, John Green A fantastically written and emotional book. Technically considered a young adult novel, The Fault in Our Stars appeals to all age groups. 16 year old Hazel Grace Lancaster was diagnosed at age thirteen with a terminal form of thyroid cancer that has since spread to her lungs. She keeps most people in her life at a distance, knowing her death will ultimately hurt them. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.

Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë Hands-down my favorite romance novel of all time! Published in 1847, Jane Eyre is a love story between the courageous orphan Jane Eyre and the brilliant, brooding, and domineering Edward Rochester. The loneliness and cruelty of Jane’s upbringing strengthens her natural independence and spirit, which prove to be important when she takes a position as a governess at Thornfield Hall. But after she falls in love with her employer, her discovery of his terrible secret forces her to make a difficult choice.

Outlander , Diana Gabaldon Outlander blends rich historical fiction with riveting adventure and a truly epic love story between Clair Randall, a former combat nurse in 1945 and Jamie Fraser, a gallant Scots warrior from 1743. Claire, recently back from war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon, walks through a standing stone in the Scottish Highlands. Suddenly she finds herself an “outlander” in a war torn Scotland in 1743. Marooned amid danger, passion and violence Claire learns her only chance of safety lies in Jamie. She soon finds herself torn between two very different men and two irreconcilable lives.

IT’S NICE TO DRESS UP AND GO OUT ON THE TOWN, BUT WORKING SIDE BY SIDE IN THE KITCHEN IS A GREAT WAY TO CREATE TOGETHERNESS AND PROVIDE NOURISHMENT IN MANY AREAS OF LIFE AND RELATIONSHIPS. Cooking is a big part of our relationship and something we enjoy doing together. It combines many things we love such as nourishing foods, community, connection and making memories. This Valentine’s Day, have fun “cooking up” a dash of laughter, a spoonful of togetherness and heap of love while you make your own memories. Full of flavor yet perfect in their simplicity, these are some of our favorite “Date-Night In” recipes. These recipes combine the freshest of local ingredients such as our purple radish Maryland microgreens and beets from The Jefferson Corn Stand. The Cranberry and Pear White Balsamic and Basil Infused EVOO, we sourced at LOVE (Lebherz Oil and Vinegar Emporium) downtown or the Common Market. The bison filets were purchased from Hemp’s Meats in Jefferson, but bison can be found at some of our local health food stores, too. If you prefer beef filets, those work equally well in this recipe. The chocolate-covered strawberries are super simple and fun to make; however, if you’re looking for a variety of treats, we love Farmer’s Daughters Bakery. Supporting local is a huge part of our table, heart and home.

bison f i l e t s I n g r e d i e n ts + 2 Bison Filets + Avacado Oil + ½ cup Balsamic Vinegar + Sprig of fresh rosemary, finely diced + Salt and Pepper to taste

D i r e ct i o n s 01 Marinate steaks in the balsamic vinegar for at least 30 minutes. 02 Bring steaks to room temperature. 03 Sprinkle rosemary, salt and pepper on each sides of the steaks. 04 In a cast iron skillet or heavy pan, heat 1-2 Tablespoons of oil over medium-high heat. 05 Once the pan is hot, carefully sear the steaks for 2-3 minutes, each side. The steaks will have a gorgeous brown color. NOTE: Depending on desired cook time, sit your steaks to the side for 10 minutes to allow to cook internally before serving. If additional cook time is desired, place in oven a few minutes. Bison is a leaner meat. It cooks quicker than beef. CONTINUED >

When I design things, things that are historical and accurate, it’s timeless. When you are a caretaker of a historic building, it transcends time if you do it properly. She found a unique chandelier from Merida, Mexico, that is in the dining room and, Monique adds, “I found a lot of local things too.” The dining room has a whimsical theme of Peacocks and is painted a gorgeous, peacock blue. Their success is not serendipitous. It’s the result of the details that make this place so special. Details such as all linens are laundered and air-dried, followed by hand pressing. The five bedrooms are full of luxurious linens, fluffy pillows and over-sized bath towels. Here at 10 Clarke, no one skips the chef’s breakfast in the morning. The signature dishes include decadent, chocolate malted waffles made with 80 percent cocoa that must rise overnight. It’s topped off with fresh, real vanilla whipped cream and syrup from Monique’s Grandmother’s summer home in upstate New York. Again, the details; it’s all served on elegant fine china, sterling and crystal. On the weekends, the chef prepares a three-course breakfast that returning guests admit is one of the reasons they come again. “We use super fresh ingredients for breakfast. We patronize all the farmer’s markets and local organic sellers where we get our vegetables and eggs. We get a lot of foodies that come to town, so we want to utilize the freshest, organic products we can find,” adds Monique. “Owning 10 Clarke is a real treat for me. Ninety-nine percent of people that walk through my door are happy. My job is to keep them happy. You work super hard and yet, have to make it look effortless. We enjoy educating people about vintage homes and our sweet, little town,” adds Monique. She truly is an ambassador to Frederick. 10Clarke.com PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUSAN KALERGIS PHOTOGRAPHY

WHERE THERE IS UNCERTAINTY IN LIFE, A LIFE CHANGE OR QUESTIONS, CONNECTING WITH SOMEONE WHO HAS EXPERIENCE IN YEARS OF EXPERTISE, CAN ALTER THE COURSE OF A WOMAN’S LIFE. Face to face and heart to heart; this is where life change can begin at Woman to Woman Mentoring, Inc. “This program started out of love,” says Executive

Director, Tonya Hatosy-Stier, “The first program launched in 2009. I joined the board in 2011 and fell in love with the concept of an inter-generational connecting of young, future professional women who are seeking direction, support, and guidance, and connecting them with women who have lived life a little bit. Women who could help them to navigate the twists and turns of life.” A local Frederick County-wide program, Woman to Woman Mentoring’s (W2WM) mission is to cultivate mentoring relationships that provide women, ages 18-35, with guidance, support and community connections. first-generation students who are seeking direction on how to navigate that and complete it, and then how to find a job.” Tonya continues, “This [program] has been my calling and one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I love it when young women come into our office, and they are uncertain if they are doing the right thing. There’s something wonderful that happens when CONTINUED >

them with a mentor.” W2WM serves around 80 women annually. Tonya says, “We are a safe place where the woman will be heard. They come to us, and we listen to them. We don’t want them to wear a mask. When they feel heard, something begins to happen with that.” She continues, “That’s the first step in the process, sharing where you might be stuck, where you need support. Some don’t know what they want, but they know they need something. We help them identify what that is and then match each woman with a volunteer mentor.” Engaging with mentors can truly change the direction of these young lives. Tonya says, “Mentee M came to us feeling lost, anxious, and alone and didn’t think it was within her power to change her situation or even her outlook. She had isolated herself, and it was a major step for her to even apply to W2WM. Even after her interview, Mentee M looked for ways out and seriously

considered quitting. Halfway through the program, she and her mentor have formed a deep connection. In workshops, she started to become fully engaged, sharing her wins and her frustrations, encouraging other mentees, building herself a support network, and becoming a support to others. Now she’s in college, and is exploring new job possibilities.” Mentee M says of her experience with the program, “I have been part of the W2WM program, and it’s the best decision I made for myself. The women I have met and gotten to know over the past twelve weeks have had the biggest impact on my life. The strongest, motivational, self-love, positive women I’ve ever met. Everyone has a story to tell, and it’s never the end of the book. I will forever be grateful for the women in my life.” A caring heart and excellent listening skills are all

4

that’s required of a mentor. Kim Lenta says of the three women she has had the privilege of mentoring, “My approach is to meet them where they are, to provide guidance, and help them to identify priorities and pros and cons. I help them to come up with the answers because what they really need is a sounding board. I listen, encourage, and lift them up.” Kim concludes, “The one that’s going to walk away, feeling the most rewarded is not the mentee, it’s the mentor. They will be so incredibly rewarded, motivated and inspired. My involvement shows me how blessed I am. I’d like everyone to become involved in W2WM and see how simple it is to get outside of yourself to help someone else!” 1 & 3 : SARAH RACHAEL PHOTOGRAPHY 2 & 4 : SPENCE PHOTOGRAPHIC February 2020 | Frederick Lifestyle

A caldera is a large volcanic crater typically formed by a major eruption leading to the collapse of the mouth of a volcano. Forming the southernmost member of the Cyclades island group, Santorini is the remains of the Minoan eruption that, 3,600 years ago, destroyed a formerly single island and created the current caldera.

stay SUN ROCKS BOUTIQUE HOTEL Sun Rocks Boutique Hotel is considered one of Santorini’s most romantic hotels. The elegant couples-only cliffside hideaway—named a Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice 2018 award winner— features luxe, minimalist rooms and suites carved into the side of a volcanic cliff featuring amazing caldera and sea views. experience SUNSET VIEWS

About 25 minutes up the coast is where you can catch sights of what people often refer to as arguably the best sunsets you’ll ever see. Catch some of the best panoramic views of Santorini from 15th-century Byzantine castle ruins. Situated on the side of caldera cliffs, Oia village offers tons of breathtaking viewing spots. Be sure to get there well before sunset—because of the area’s sundown popularity, you’ll find crowds of people gathered on streets, rooftops and stairs anticipating the one-of-akind experience.
