Foundation of Williamson County, TN, has been dedicated to saving and sharing places and stories. These past and present stories and memories will live on for generations to come. Everything's Better with Champagne! THE NASHVILLE BUBBLY BAR ADDS SPARKLE TO YOUR NEXT EVENT
WHAT’S A WEDDING WITHOUT CHAMPAGNE? A brunch without bubbly? Raise your glasses and toast to Nashville’s newest bubbly bar! Owner Helen Ponchillia says, “I have always wanted to open my own little wedding/event venue to help celebrate a special, memorable and unforgettable event in a person’s life. The Nashville Bubbly Bar is a way I can help celebrate that special moment and be a small part of someone’s special day.” Helen’s love of the wedding industry is the inspiration behind the bubbly bar. “From working with a client to customizing their own cocktails/mocktails menu to the quality, full-service bartending service we provide, we are there every step of the way to alleviate the stress of planning the beverage end!,” she adds. Dolly, as she’s named, is a one-of-a-kind fully converted vintage horse trailer that is blush pink in color, covered in beautiful brass accents, equipped with a double kegerator system, brass wrapped bar counters, artisan wood details and covered in luscious boxwood. George is the newest addition to the bubbly bar family. He is a vintage motorcycle trailer that was restored and converted to a tiny tap bar on wheels. George is equipped with three taps for your favorite beer, bubbly or any booze you can get in keg form. Helen says George and Dolly serve weddings, anniversary celebrations, birthday parties (adults & children - “We can whip up fun non-alcoholic cocktails”), bachelor/bachelorette parties, baby showers, corporate events and just about any private party you can think of! 18

ROAD TRIP
H i t t h e Ro a d for Bourbon
A SHORT DRIVE WILL SET YOU ON A HISTORIC TRAIL COMBINING PROHIBITION WITH MODERN DAY DISTILLING ARTICLE ASHLEY HUTCHESON
22
Franklin Lifestyle | October 2020
JUST A QUICK SHOT UP I65 AND YOU CAN FIND YOURSELF ON THE KENTUCKY BOURBON TRAIL IN UNDER 3 HOURS WITH THE CLOSEST TO FRANKLIN BEING THE FAMOUS MAKER’S MARK. And in the days of staying closer to home, that seems just about perfect. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail is the collection of the state’s distillers publicized by the Kentucky Distillers’ Association to endorse the bourbon whiskey industry. The number of distilleries claiming to hold a spot on the famed trail can differ based on current products, opinion and taste. The Trail can be broken down into smaller unique groups like signature distillers, craft distillers or even the “original” distillers. An ideal road trip from Middle Tennessee, there are a multitude of choices related to lodging, dinning and touring; no two trips ever have to be the same. The closest two distilleries are a little under 10 miles from each other, and based on your choice of itinerary, others can be upwards of 70 miles. How do you move between locations responsibly and truly enjoy your trip? The possibilities are almost endless and offer options for all. There are car services dedicated to the Bourbon Trail and will accommodate any size group for any length trip. Many tour groups have preplanned itineraries, transportation and food that allow you to be along for the ride without having to glance at the clock. For those more into the history and surrounding areas, you can combine the Bourbon Trail with other area attractions. But the best place to start is by choosing where you will stay when the day is done. Are you planning which distilleries you are seeing around where you will be staying or planning on where you are staying based on which distilleries you are visiting? Either way the best way to make the most efficient (and fun) use of your time is to plan your route(s) from your lodging location. Make sure you do your research especially in this time of social distancing; know the hours of operations, costs and if reservations are needed. Some distillers make more than one brand; Buffalo Trace makes both Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare. While others stay on-brand but make multiple recipes like Maker’s Mark and its original, Maker’s Mark 46 and their private selection. It’s worth researching the group’s favorite brands and go-to bourbons to see if you can make one stop count for more. There are some distilleries that produce more than bourbon, so those might be nice to sneak into the itinerary if you have members of the group that prefer other spirits. Often tours can focus on specific processes like bottling and aging while others can focus on recipes and take on a more agricultural aspect of bourbon production. If you are planning on doing tours at multiple distilleries, you might want to change your tour focus at each distillery; making them each more interesting. And don’t forget to allow time to enjoy yourself. The tours themselves can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 90 minutes, based on the size of distillery and the type of tour. This road trip can be anything you want it to be; make sure you have plenty of time, fun and a designated driver.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A CHEF?
IN THE KITCHEN WITH OWNER KRIS LAFAY MCCORKLE
I also want to enlighten people about food and have them take the time to understand what they’re eating. WHAT CLASSES ARE YOU OFFERING THIS FALL? We’re going to try to change the recipes with the seasons. So for fall we are going to make a sweet potato gnocchi with sage butter in order to get the full combination of flavors. We also plan on having wine tastings with French, Italian, and California wines. I hope to have my son, Christopher, who is a sommelier, come over from France to take part. WHERE DO YOUR RECIPES COME FROM? I’ve been collecting recipes for 45 years, and then I tweak them to make them work for different things. I like to offer fine-dining dishes that use five ingredients or less. I love French cooking with a little American twist. When I go to Michelin-star restaurants in France and love a dish, I ask the chefs to give me their recipes, and they usually do! WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INGREDIENTS? Before COVID, I was planning on buying most of my ingredients from the vendors at the Franklin Farmer’s Market. Right now, all of my ingredients come from Whole Foods, which allows everyone to be able to easily purchase them on their own. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO USE THE BEST INGREDIENTS IN A RECIPE? I believe the best ingredients, those without chemicals and artificial ingredients, make everything taste so good.
What is your favorite dish to make? My favorite is Gratin Potatoes, with the cream and the butter and the layers of thin sliced potatoes with Gruyère cheese inside. This dish can complement any meal, whether it’s steaks, chicken, lamb or turkey. Visit BlackDiamondCulinaryTN.com to schedule your cooking class. CityLifestyle.com/Franklin

RENOVATE & REFINE
Happy Kitchen, Happy Home IT'S ALL ABOUT THE PANTRY!
ARTICLE LINDA DOHSE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Cognac colored wood is an option
WHILE THE YEAR 2020 HAS BEEN FULL OF UNCERTAINTIES, ONE THING FOR CERTAIN IS THAT PEOPLE ARE SPENDING MORE TIME AT HOME. For some, more time working; for others, more time learning. And for those preparing meals, more time cooking. Which brings us to the topic of kitchen pantries. And no one knows more about organized pantries than Mindy Bledsoe, Owner and Executive Design Consultant at Tailored Living of Nashville. “Kitchen pantries have become one of the most popular renovation spaces this year,” says Mindy. “People eat out less and are focusing more on preparing meals at home. The pandemic has made folks look at their homes, and how they are – or aren’t – organized. It’s much easier to make a grocery list and plan meals from an organized pantry. Conversely, a lack of organization can cause stress for a lot of people.” During a free in-home consultation, Mindy or one of her professional design team members will measure the existing pantry space and discuss ideas with the homeowner. This is a collaborative process to ensure the result is a functional and beautiful space the family will enjoy for years to come. Mindy notes, “Adjustable shelving is a must to maximize the use of existing space, and can make a huge difference in even a small pantry. No one needs to settle for the wire CONTINUED >

OUR TOWN
CONFESSIONS OF A FIRST TIME POLL WORKER 38
Franklin Lifestyle | October 2020
AUGUST 6
5:05 AM: I was up before my alarm at 5:10 am, which is highly unusual given that I’m more of a night owl than early bird. But I didn’t want to be late to my first assignment as a poll worker for the TN Open Primary election. I had packed my lunch the night before, and I had laid out my clothes, but I also had a strong martini and wine with dinner which is a mistake I won’t make again. 6 AM: So, with a slight headache, I pulled up at the polling location right on time. I made my way inside as experienced poll workers were already busy setting up voting stations. I noticed the plexiglass dividers set up on the tables, boxes of masks, gowns, face shields, gloves and hand sanitizer that were available for our use. Safety precautions - check! No one seemed to be in charge just yet, so I made my way to the break room in search of coffee where I met a firecracker named Gayle who was decked out in red, white and blue from head to toe. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I had just met a real-life superhero. Her energy never flagged, her enthusiasm was through the roof, and she knew more about the election day process than most mere mortals. And, she provided one of the most essential items of the day, coffee. Gayle had already worked 11 days of early voting polling and would now clock in a 12+ hour day at today’s primary. I guessed that she was some 20 years older than me, but my ARTICLE LISA CHADER
fortitude and endurance would pale in comparison to hers. As an entertainment publicist and executive, I’ve worked countless red carpets and award shows. I know what it’s like to stand on your feet all day (and most of the night), troubleshoot on the spot, and take charge of any situation that arises. But I had no idea what I was in for at the polls. My biggest (and perhaps only) criticism of the morning was that no one person was in charge of briefing first-time workers. We had each taken a short, online training course as in-person courses had been cancelled due to COVID, but that was it. Two of my fellow registrars were also new, and we could have benefitted from some structured, last minute instructions.

Luxury Desserts MEESH'S BAKERY TAKES THE CAKE (OR COOKIE) MICHELLE WILSON DIDN’T SET OUT TO BE A BAKER. She was a former teacher and had a career teaching everything from preschool to special education at the elementary school level. Michelle says, “While I worked full time at a school, I would make cupcakes or cake pops for people every once and a while when they asked. And it just really unfolded from there. As word of mouth spread, I started making decorated cookies, birthday and wedding cakes, and much more. I got so busy, that I dropped to part time, then to not at all at the school. When I look back at some of my early work, I realized 50

how far I actually have come in the last five years.” She adds, “I have always loved to bake, but I never did cakes or decorated cookies prior to starting my business. I never saw myself as an artist, and I can’t draw to save my life. However, I do enjoy baking and creating new things. I always would create things and bring them to my work or send them with my husband.” Fast forward to today, and Michelle says while she’s done everything from cupcakes, cookies, bars, cake pops, birthday cakes, wedding cakes and dessert bars, her favorite is decorated cookies. “They have become extremely popular, and I really love making them. It is actually very therapeutic for me, so that is definitely where I have focused and invested effort into learning more.” Michelle was originally self-taught and didn’t start taking classes until a few years ago. “My cookie decorating skills have drastically improved as I’ve learned from other cookie masters. I have learned some different tricks and needed tools to achieve certain looks. Knowledge is powerful so take the time to learn. I truly winged it my first two to three years, and now I look back and think, ‘Wow, could you imagine where my skill level would be if I had actually taken classes at the beginning!’” And now she’s teaching her own cookie decorating classes. “I definitely think my love of teaching kids has brought me to this point in my business. I have combined my love of teaching and my knowledge in cookie decorating to help others be able to create their own beautiful creations. Prior to Covid, I taught decorating classes at various places like Craft Love, Legends Golf Club, my place, private parties for girls night out, company team building, and much more. Currently with Covid challenges, I’m getting small classes and private classes started back up at my place. I’m also ramping up more online tutorials, classes, and sharing various recipes and DIYs.” MeeshsBakery.com 615.686.7237 michelle@meeshsbakery.com CityLifestyle.com/Franklin

1892 DYLAN AND JORDAN MORRISON’S RESTAURANT, 1892, THE YEAR IN WHICH THE PROPERTY WAS BUILT, FELL INTO THEIR HANDS IN 2017. Through renovations and preservation, the historic establishment has become a culinary destination. 1892 is a warm and welcoming Victorian country home. Old fashioned floral wallpaper hugs the curtain-drawn windows and spindle back chairs await exciting conversations. Rustic cheese boards line the ceiling and antique cupboards hold decorative dishware. Chandeliers and a fireplace illuminate romantic table settings. Dylan says, “In parts of the space, we uncovered and kept the original olive paint, scattered with what some call little ‘moments.’ It’s perfectly imperfect; the walls tell a story.” The atmosphere complements the beautifully arranged cuisine on plates by Nashville potters. After years of cooking for upscale restaurants, Dylan’s entrepreneurial spirit motivated him to take the leap and open his own restaurant where he grew up: Leiper’s Fork. Dylan is the head chef while his wife Jordan directs the front of the house. Their tight-knit staff works like a fine-tuned clock and presents a personal fine dining experience. They are open for lunch and dinner reservations in their two dining rooms, one for private parties. During normal operations, they can entertain up to 30 guests. The menu, from homemade starters to desserts, is constantly changing with the season and with what crops are available. They are learning how to make the most of their own garden, complete with an apiary, down the road at The Benton Orchard while also sourcing other local ingredients. Dylan says, “Our mission is to build a sustainable micro-community with the restaurant and surrounding farmers.” Dylan mentioned they once harvested thousands of pounds of tomatoes in one week and had fun finding creative ways to use all of them. In addition to fresh produce, Dylan loves to incorporate meats such as lamb and pheasant. He plays with different sauces and flavor profiles to expand your palate. They also offer a well-rounded beer and wine selection, carefully curated by wine enthusiast Jordan, and three handcrafted cocktails. Their favorite, Benton’s Bourbon & Pear, uses Leiper’s Fork Distillery’s Colonel Hunters Select Barrel. Don’t miss out on a farm to table meal at 1892 in the quaint village of Leiper’s Fork this autumn. 1892 4150 Old Hillsboro Road Leiper’s Fork 615.614.3964 1892leipersfork.com CityLifestyle.com/Franklin

Go to the “dark side” with this design that requires matte black paint, white paint, some metallic paint (for an out-ofthis-world vibe) and some newspapers. Be careful—this one could get messy!
+
Leave your stems natural or cover with metallic paint if desired. Then, coat your mini pumpkins in matte black paint— be sure to cover everything!
+
You can leave some matte black, but for an extra touch, lay out newspaper and splatter your white paint onto some of your black pumpkins. Bonus—as long as you catch it before it dries, any paint should be easily removed with some warm water.

Start with several mini pumpkins. (We prefer to use fake ones so you don’t have to worry about leaving them out too long!) You’ll also need some white paint, metallic paint and black paint. Twine is optional to add a slightly rustic vibe to the stems.
+
Paint all of the stems with black paint and wrap some with twine if desired. Then, create several different looks with combinations of metallic and flat paint. Make extra creepy “oozing” pumpkins by allowing paint to run down the sides.
+
Don’t feel limited to solid colors! Experiment here with different patterns and textures (like painting over lace or using a sponge to apply paint instead of a brush), and add some extra sparkle with glitter!

TIMES PAST
CRYSTAL BROWN OF SOUTHERN SNIPPETS IS A NASHVILLE NATIVE WHO DELIGHTS IN ALL THINGS SOUTHERN. Her almost 14K followers on Instagram enjoy her life’s morsels about family, travel, faith and food. Crystal’s grandmother owned a southern restaurant in Alabama, which is where her love for food began. While she says her family still depends on “pizza, Chick-fil-a, and the local Mexican restaurant every now and again,” she really enjoys creating healthy meals. “For me the instant pot is the biggest time saver! I can create healthy meals and even desserts in under 10 minutes!”
Instant Pot Chocolate Molten Cakes + cup of water + 1/2 cup unsalted butter + 4 oz semi-sweet chocolate + 1 cup powdered sugar + 2 large eggs + 2 egg yolks + 1 tsp vanilla extract + 1/2 cup all purpose flour + 1/4 tsp salt 1. that fits inside Instant Pot. 3. Place butter and chocolate in microwave safe bowl, and microwave in 15 second increments, using a whisk stir until smooth and melted. Usually about 1 minute. 4. Slowly add powdered sugar and continue to stir with whisk. 5. Continue whisking and add eggs, egg yolks and vanilla. 6. Gently add in the flour and be careful not to over mix. 7. Pour the mixture evenly in the 4 ramekins and place the ramekins on the trivet in your Instant Pot. You will have to stack. 8. Place the lid on the Instant Pot and make sure the pressure valve is sealed. Press the manual pressure button on high pressure for 8 minutes. 9. Once the timer is complete, quick release by opening the venting valve until the pin drops. 10. Carefully open the lid and remove the ramekins with oven mitts or tongs. Using a knife, carefully run along the side and gently turn over. They should pop out but may need a little tap. 11. Drizzle with chocolate, powdered sugar, fruit or whatever you like and enjoy!
