Holland Awards Dinner The Holland Awards Dinner: An Evening Celebrating Promise and Potential was held on October 17th at the Turf Valley Resort. The event, named for Reverend John Holland, recognizes individuals or organizations that demonstrate extraordinary dedication to serving the most vulnerable in Howard County. Raising critical funding, CAC provides food, housing and energy assistance, and early childhood education to families.
Beer, Burbon and Bags On November 14, 2019, Blossoms of Hope sponsored Beer, Bourbon and Bags. The event incorporated beer and bourbon tasting with the "Power of the Purse" - a gently-used handbags sale. Live music, games, a Silent Auction, and delicious food from Cured 18th and 21st made for a great time.

The energy they bring and the different workouts they provide enable them to help members achieve their personal goals. King explains that his trainers are chosen based on many factors, but dependability and experience are key. “My head trainer, and assistant general manager Daijah fit that bill,” he says, “She has a great personality, is experienced in the Title way, and puts on a kick-butt class.” King says. Washina, a fellow trainer, also brings great energy to the table. Daijah and Washina are just two of the wonderful trainers at Title Boxing Club. King says,” We are always looking for more great talent to help our members get a great workout. “Our vision is to be here to help people reach their health and fitness goals. Everyone is welcome here; we care about you,” says King. He explains the difference between a gym and his club. “We are not a gym. Gyms look at their members as statistics. People can come and go, and it doesn’t matter. They’re just numbers. We are a club. We care about you and you are a part of our family. We are going to challenge you and support you.” If you are interested in becoming part of the Title Boxing Cub family, contact them at 443-410-0803 or check out their website at www.titleboxingclub.com/columbia-mflats-md/

GABRIELLE HOWELL TALKS ABOUT HER JOURNEY TO WELLNESS WHILE HELPING OTHERS FIND THEIR WAY.

Columbia Lifestyle | January 2020
GROWING UP IN HARTFORD COUNTY, GABRIELLE HOWELL LIVED AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE. She was a member of the Soccer Club of Baltimore, playing from 7 to 20 years old. An athlete the majority of her life, staying active was always on Howell’s mind. After moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma, Howell worked as a full-time graphic designer, but fitness was still in her heart. New to the area, she sought a fitness community through which she could get back in physical shape. Her relationship at the time was unhealthy, so she needed healing in her mind and in her spirit as much as in her body. As Howell committed more and more time to her practice, her instructor began to notice her exceptional progress and, encouraged Howell to become an instructor herself. One thing really did lead to another; and I would have never thought that I would be in the space that I am currently in,” Howell explains. The space she’s in is as an effective consultant with a growing business. As her class load began to grow she was able to leave her full-time job as a graphic designer and began teaching yoga full time. Eventually Howell and her family moved back to Maryland, she was able to establish a co-parenting relationship and a beautiful, healthy relationship with a supportive partner. She credits yoga for helping her heal, not only within herself, but also in her relationships. “It’s the small decisions we make every day,” she says. The acknowledgment of that is what helped Gabrielle to rewrite her story. FAST FORWARD “When I started my wellness business, my son was 4 weeks old,” Howell says. Starting a business with a small child is a feat, but Howell is no stranger to meeting challenges head on. “It sounds crazy to others, but the timing totally made sense to me. Being able to be with my children and still run my business full time. It just made sense,” says Howell. CONTINUED >

Help i ng Famil ie s Buil di ng Community HOWARD COUNTY IS AFFLUENT, AND THRIVING, AND FULL OF OPPORTUNITY. But, like in every other community, there are families here who struggle every day to survive. Twenty-six percent of Howard County residents have trouble paying their bills and providing for their families. Five percent of this community lives below the poverty line and, while that may look like a small number, that figure can be deceiving without context. Poverty is determined by household size, and that line of demarcation currently sits at a paltry $25,000. A family earning anything more than that does not live in poverty, so determines the U.S. Census Bureau. But the United Way’s 2016 ALICE Report shows that it takes approximately $86,500 annually for that same family of four to meet the basic needs of living and working in Howard County. That highlights a huge gap. In the 1960s, under President Lyndon B. Johnson, a series of Community Action Agencies were created to provide a network of support, helping people become self-sufficient. The Community Action Council (CAC) of Howard County is a non-profit serving 35,000 people within the county every year. The group covers four main areas of need: Head Start and pre-kindergarten education, eviction prevention, food support, and energy bill assistance. The CAC provides all of the Head Start programming in the county through four early childhood education centers. They see 322 students in full-day programming and provide before- and after-school care. They do not directly place families currently experiencing homelessness, but they provide funding to keep families facing eviction crises. They run the Howard County Food Bank and support 14 other food pantries. And, they are the only entity in the county

who provides assistance for families and aging individuals who are suffering under the rising costs of energy bills. They also offer weatherization updates in multi-unit homes to make them energy efficient – a bonus to property owners, too, who won’t have to pay full price to improve this facet of their units.

Item donations are appreciated, but cash donations allow the group to purchase more in bulk than what individuals can purchase themselves. There is a way for almost everyone to help. Greib’s work follows her everywhere she goes, because the need is everywhere. “When I see a panhandler at a light, I might tell him, ‘I don’t know your story. You don’t have to tell me, but you don’t have to be here either. Here’s my card. There are services that can help you. We can help you turn this around.’” Everyone has highs and lows, she says. There is no judgment. To find out how you can help, visit www.cac-hc.org or email Jen Grieb at jgrieb@cac-hc.org.
