Loveland Lifestyle | March 2020
MARGARET RANALLI’S FAMILIARITY WITH THE LOVELAND AREA PRIOR TO 2017 WAS, LIKE MANY CINCINNATIANS’, SOMEWHAT HIT OR MISS. Sure, she recalled riding the bike trail, going canoeing, visiting the theater company once or twice, maybe even grabbing a bite to eat at one of the original dining establishments—but she didn’t really have any kind of reason to make it a frequent destination. After all, she was busy running Enoteca Emilia from its original O’Bryonville location from 2011 to 2016, after which she closed up shop and moved to Charleston, South Carolina, to help a developer open three separate dining concepts. Then, two years later, she received a call from JoAnne Serdar of Entertainment Properties that had her giving Loveland some serious thought. JoAnne was curious if Margaret might be interested in opening up a restaurant in the vacant space on the corner of West Loveland and 2nd Street, formerly occupied by Bella’s Restaurant. “Now, when I first got this call, I almost dismissed Loveland as a good location,” she says. “But then when I flew up here and saw the development and restaurants and retail, it became a no-brainer.” ALL THE LOVE FOR LOVELAND In addition to the prime location, Margaret says there were other elements of the space that really drew her to want to open Enoteca Emilia again. “The fact that [the space] is on one level makes it so much easier … it’s a newer facility and the kitchen is three times the size of the original,” Margaret says. “The ability to have the patio is amazing … as is the ability to open the windows and have a two-sided bar. The whole space had great energy—plus I love the foot traffic.” And, even though the restaurant is starting over in a new part of town, Margaret chose to keep some of the same staff as before, including chef Brittany Blodgett, sous chef Daniel Carter and wine director Ben Kohn. “Loveland has been welcoming and inviting, with a variety of all sorts of people who want to have a nice meal and be social,” Brittany says. “I never came here before, until I (ironically) interviewed with Bella’s after Enoteca closed. Ultimately I turned down that job.” “Having a second chance and a fresh start was nice to get my head back in the game … and our management team is great here, too,” Brittany adds. “We took three years to grow and learn and figure ourselves out and bring it to a whole new level.”

WHETHER IT’S HARMONIOUS HYGGE OR FUNCTIONAL FENG SHUI, INTERIOR DECORATORS OFTEN FOLLOW THE GOLDEN RULE OF LIVING WITH WHAT YOU LOVE. For Nicole Russell, owner of Lauren Alexandra Interiors, this couldn’t be truer. Cotton, velvet, silk, linen, leather—Nicole uses and embraces them all when putting together a room for her clients. She doesn’t shy away from a particular fabric, style, color or accessory. With skill (and a touch of magic?), she pulls out personality and infuses it into her décor designs. Nicole doesn’t simply redo spaces—she reimagines them. With an avid attachment to creativity and an over-the-top love for windows (say the word and her face lights up), Nicole first began creating window treatments as a hobby in 2008. Her favorite part of the room, she believes window treatments are the ultimate finishing touch. It was this love for creating that prompted her to go beyond windows and step into the world of interior design. So, in 2014, Nicole started Lauren Alexandra Interiors. Thanks to word of mouth among the community, her business has grown—and she isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

Their back porch—a new living space the family didn’t have before. “Thanks to Nicole’s classy design eye, the accessories and patterns make the area inviting.” Bridget continues. “She’s patient, fun to work with, makes decorating decisions easier … she knows my style.” In the age of Pinterest and mood boards, Nicole knows it’s easy to get wrapped up in current trends or try to do too much. Among her favorite design suggestions: + Determine how you want to use the space and who will be in it. + Identify how long you want to live with the color scheme you select—if it’s an extended period of time, take that into consideration. + Find a balance between how much you add to a room. Don’t put something in just to put it in—everything should have a function. + Mix it up by combining and layering different textures and patterns. At the end of the design day, Nicole’s top priority is for her clients to be comfortable and

make them part of the process. “I design the room, but I don’t live in the space,” she says. “Once a plan is chosen, I bring fabric and color swatches so a client can touch, feel and see everything. If they are completely at a loss, I’ll try to use a trend—but the focus still remains on the client’s personality because I want them to be happy with the end result.” As for knowing when the room rejuvenation mission is accomplished? “When I walk in a room and I visually feel like everything has a purpose and a place, then I know it’s complete.” LaurenAlexandraInteriors.com 513.582.2495

AS YOU DRIVE BY D1 TRAINING’S FACILITY ON FIELDS ERTEL, YOU MAY THINK IT’S JUST ANOTHER BORING GYM FULL OF ROWS OF TREADMILLS, STAIR CLIMBERS AND RECUMBENT BIKES. But take one step inside and the thing you’ll be struck by most is the sheer amount of open space. Instead of cardio equipment, you’ll find a large expanse of green turf replete with football field markings and surrounded by inspirational words, plus workout equipment such as exercise sleds, battle ropes and plyometric boxes. The brainchild of former Denver Broncos recruit Will Bartholomew, D1 was born out of his need to rehab after sustaining a career-ending knee injury during a 2001 training camp. Will sought a way to recover and optimize his performance in a way similar to the training he received while at Division 1 schools. Finding no such program, he created his own. While at first D1 focused specifically on youth training, it has evolved into a facility that is truly for anybody, says Chris Witzgall, co-owner and GM. “We can modify any of our workouts to any level,” Chris says. “For someone just starting to work out, we can modify either strength or boot camp workouts. Our coaches can modify any of the movements for [an] injury. Any age and any level, we can take a workout and make it apply to them.”

dressed to sell THERE ARE FEW WHO KNOW REAL ESTATE AS WELL AS ELLIE KOWALCHIK. Fewer still who’ve dedicated the heart, soul, pride and passion to what’s become a long and prolific career with a strong foundation in Loveland. And when readying a house for sale—Ellie and her Move2Loveland team are unmatched. “Buyers want HGTV.” Put simply: everyone wants the dream house already in dream condition. With endless programs showcasing design perfection across every room, today’s sellers are up against higher standards—an obstacle Ellie knows how to leverage and, more important, overcome. “It’s not your home anymore. It’s a property you’re selling,” she begins. “You still want it to feel like home to the person walking in—but some changes may not make it feel like yours anymore.” So where to start?
