Laser

(NewBeauty magazine) is now being offered at
The Sciton Halo is the world’s first hybrid fractional laser. It simultaneously delivers non-ablative and ablative wavelengths in a single pass over the skin. It delivers very little down time. Band Light (BBL) therapy consists of a series of treatments in which a broad spectrum of light is transmitted through a small hand piece placed over the skin, passing through the top layer of skin and penetrating to the deeper layer where blood vessels, pigment cells and collagen reside. Because the epidermis is unharmed, the severe redness and peeling associated with traditional laser skin resurfacing is avoided. The gentle, non-ablative treatments can be used to treat the face, chest, neck and hands—virtually anywhere that sun damage shows. BBL is also used for hair reduction and acne treatments. For more information. visit EyePlasticsaz.com.

others, but he and his wife enjoy visiting spas in town, as well. “We love it here,” he says. Recently, he was in the Valley for another reason—to talk about something else that is near and dear to his heart. Literally. Howie is part of the Take Cholesterol to Heart campaign (TakeCholesteroltoHeart.com), and he’s on a mission to educate others about cholesterol.

Chandler Lifestyle | September 2019
His personal journey with high cholesterol began 30 years ago. “The truth is, I just went to the doctor for a general check-up like I do yearly, and part of the general check-up was taking blood. When the test results came back, he said, ‘You have really high cholesterol’ and he wanted to put me on a statin.” Howie initially agreed but then didn’t follow the doctor’s orders. “I took my statin. I didn’t like my statin. So, I stopped taking my statin,” he says. He didn’t like how the statin made him feel, so he simply stopped taking it. “I recently learned that many people—at least 50%—stop taking their statins [within] a year of starting them,” he says. “That’s why I’m so glad to be involved in Take Cholesterol to Heart, a campaign that encourages people with high cholesterol to talk more openly with their doctor and find the statin that works best for them.” When Howie’s check-up the following year showed that his cholesterol was “through the roof,” he confessed that he’d stopped taking his statin— and had done so without consulting his doctor. It was then when he learned there were different statins to try and that not all would affect him the same way. Today, Howie continues with the active and healthy lifestyle he’s always followed and has been faithfully taking a statin. “I want to tell people how important heart health and cholesterol is. … [and] how prevalent this issue CONTINUED >

Cholesterol is a killer because you don’t feel it and because you don’t see it. It’s a ticking time bomb. I didn’t know that,” he says. When he’s not talking cholesterol, Howie’s calendar is filled family time, and of course, with numerous shows. “My panacea in life is being busy and being distracted, and I’m one of the luckiest guys in the world—having that seat at the table at America’s Got Talent and watching people’s hopes and dreams come true, having that stage at Deal or No Deal and watching people hopefully leave better off than when they came in, having fun and working with my

TWO UNIQUE CLOTHING DESIGNERS WHO SHARE A COMMON THREAD
LEFT Joy Li. | Photography Sylvia Hardt BELOW Sisi Aduke
CHANDLER’S FASHION INDUSTRY MAY STILL BE FLEDGLING, BUT THERE ARE TALENTED DESIGNERS MAKING THEIR MARK LOCALLY AND IN THE VALLEY. Two of these designers are Jummy Salami and Joy Li. They have different vibes, but share common goals to make comfortable, durable clothing bursting with style and versatility. JUMMY SALAMI Jummy is the mastermind behind SiSi Aduke (SiSiAduke.com), a Chandler-based clothing brand that launched in 2018. She’s the owner, designer, and a mother of two. Her clothing lines are for women and children, offering everything from casual styles to cocktail dresses. The name? SiSi Aduke means “treasured lady” in the Yoruba language of Nigeria, where Jummy was born. Jummy describes her line as an Afrocentric female clothing brand that creates culturally appreciative, yet globally appealing designs suited for any ethnic group. Her clothing blends African prints with a variety of fabric to create vibrant and modern styles. “One of the things that makes our designs unique is the versatility they provide. The prints can be paired with a variety of colors, and the designs are suitable for day to night, casual to fancy looks,” Jummy says. Comfort and durability are factored into each of Jummy’s designs. “Even the ones that are pretty flamboyant still maintain their wearability,” she says. Jummy was interested in clothing design even as a child. She’d alter her own attire and appreciated clothes that fit well and were unique. Her hobby turned into something bigger when she was first introduced to the professional world of fashion design through Phoenix Fashion Week’s Emerging Designers Bootcamp in 2008. “I’ll say that SiSi Aduke is as much a style journey for me as well as my clients. I still have to push myself to wear color sometimes, but when I do, I feel the boldness that comes from wearing something so vibrant and well-fitting. I get a renewed vigor to share that with other women,” she explains. Jummy offers practical advice to staying fashionable. “Truthfully, I’ll say don’t follow the trends. They are ever-changing for sure. The most inspiring in fashion are those who dress for themselves, be it personal style or comfort.” JOY LI Joy is the designer, founder and owner of her company and clothing brand, Joy Li (JoyLi.net). Her designs reflect a modern, sophisticated street style that can be easily accessorized for personal flair. Her inspiration came from her passion to create a flattering wardrobe that would accommodate her busy lifestyle.

“My styles are everyday looks that project confidence in who I am, rather than who I wear,” she says. To fulfill her desire for simplicity, Joy created a line of clothing to suit her daily needs from work to play to evening wear. She wanted effortless pairings that projected a sporty casual, strong girl image. Comfort, quality and versatility were important, as were pieces that could be layered and easily dressed up or down, and which would create convenient options to mix and match. Joy attended design school at Carnegie Mellon University and got her start in the fashion industry when she was hired as a fit model

create opportunities for women to work together in a safe, fair and fun environment,” she says. When she was a child, she was bullied at school and didn’t feel like she fit in. As an adult, she saw a lot of wrong in the fashion industry and wanted to do it right. “I decided to make it a mission to use my external fashion design voice to help others feel strong and project their internal beauty,” she says. “When you look good, you feel good and project your best.” Joy’s design process is mindful of the lifecycle fashion takes from

MODERN-LOOKING KITCHEN AND BREAKFAST NOOK.

Dena, who is the founder of Dena Thomas Designs, was approached by the Chandler homeowners who wanted to remodel their entire home, beginning with the kitchen and breakfast nook. “The kitchen was dated and dark,” she says, adding that she and her team will continue to update the rest of the single-family home, one room at a time. After consulting with the homeowners and learning that they wanted a crisp palette of colors in a farmhouse style for their kitchen and nook area, Dena suggested tweaking it to a more modern look, rather than going for something trendy. Dena and her team began renovating the kitchen and breakfast nook spaces. She chose a combination of grays, whites and blues for the color scheme; for example, using Sherwin Williams’ “Agreeable Gray” color on the walls. “In the kitchen, we painted the existing surrounding cabinets, demoed the island and gave them two new beautiful 10-foot islands with plenty of storage,” she says. “We painted the surrounding cabinets in ‘Sherwin Williams Pure White’ color and highlighted with a gray glaze to match the doors and baseboards to give the kitchen a fresh and bright new look.” The new kitchen islands were also painted. “We painted them a stone color and highlighted with a gray glaze, which is the same glaze we used on the surrounding cabinets,” Thomas says. “We added black hardware and black light fixtures and accessories. This created the modern look that I chose for them and the farmhouse look that they wanted originally without overdoing it.” To make the islands as user-friendly as possible for the busy family, they also feature two small refrigerators.

“I suggested we add two beverage centers that included a beverage refrigerator since my clients have small kids; and a wine refrigerator for the adults since they love to entertain. This was the perfect combination for these two mega islands,” Dena says. She also chose new modern farmhouse sinks and faucets, quartzite counters, new appliances, drapes, light fixtures and accessories. To help give the once-dark kitchen lots of light, Dena added recessed lighting to the ceiling, and then installed pendant lights and strategically placed chandeliers over the islands. The kitchen also features a beautiful new backsplash from Arizona Tile made from porcelain tile; Dena and the homeowners selected the Castle Brick/Grey style and color. In the nook, a circular table offers plenty of seating for the family, while floor-to-ceiling drapes add a stylish look, as does a modern farmhouse light fixture hanging over the center of the table. After working on the spaces for two months, Dena showed the finished rooms to the homeowners. “They are over-the-moon with it,” she says. Dena says those positive and happy moments makes all of her hard work worthwhile. “I love watching my clients beam up when they see the final product,” she says. “I have been an interior designer for over 24 years and love every day. I can honestly say that I look forward to waking up in the morning knowing that my day is packed with my clients.” To contact Dena, call 480.330.6072or visit her Facebook page at Facebook.com/DenaThomasDesigns. 30
